This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his office, 115 West 35th Street, Virginia beach, Va., this 5th day of October, 1929, in accordance with request made by self - Mr. [900].
[Edgar Cayce; Mr. [900], Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. Mrs. Edgar Cayce, Mildred Davis, and L. B. Cayce.]
Time of Reading 6:00 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. New York City.
- [900]: You will have before you the Association of National Investigators, or the Board of Trustees thereof, and the specific and particular problem that confronts this Board at this time, in the carrying out of the demonstration they seek to make in the hospital and in the educational departments. As regards the functioning of the various branches, and in particular as regards the present condition in the hospital, its organization and staff. You will advise us and answer questions concerning same.
You will also answer regarding, [900] and the associations, or the questions regarding his life, that I will ask you - [900], present in this room.
-
EC: Yes - We have those conditions as confront the Association and its officers in the various departments of its work. In giving that as may be of aid at the present time, it would be well that that given the Board when it first began to function be reviewed by that Board with prayer and attention. [See 254-50 on 7/14/29.] Ready for questions.
-
(Q) First, with respect to the employment of an M.D. Physician - (A) This would not be well at the present moment to consider, though the conditions surrounding same are such that there may be well that others are used to investigate and to consider the conditions as surround same. Many there may be that may aid in the undertaking. Do not be too fast. Do not be unmindful of the conditions that are to be required of such an one.
-
(Q) There is, then, no emergency at the present time that requires either immediate action or action sometime in the immediate future? (A) Be well that consideration be given, as has just been outlined, for the conditions may arise where this will become necessary - but conditions should be studied in the light of that given, and in the ways as are in KEEPING with that being attempted.
-
(Q) May we have the names of some few who might do research with us, and who are in these - ? (A) There has been given several who might be interested. There are those who conditions have been questioned concerning. The activities must be on the part of those who seek such association. Make the need known in those places where such may be found, and there will be PLENTY of applicants.
-
(Q) With respect to the dietician - would Dr. Hansen [Cora C. Hansen, D.O.] fill the bill satisfactorily? (A) Dependent upon who is CONDUCTING the work, and under whose supervision the body would operate. As to the present status, there may be MADE such connections as might be satisfactory through that channel, but this doubtful - unless there is much consideration given by others concerning their activity. Now, that’s crosswise, isn’t it? Here: Under the present conditions the body might act in that capacity, provided there is division made with ones in charge of that income as would be given for same, see?
-
(Q) Would Miss Annie Cayce make a good shopper or buyer of the foods for the dietician to prepare? (A) Very good.
-
(Q) Now we have before us another alternative. It might be possible to secure the services of Dr. Lydic of Dayton. [Lyman A. Lydic, D.O.] (A) The services of this body may be had, and would be well to seriously consider the taking and gaining the services of such an one, for these would work well with that being attempted, and in the manner that the operations of same would be carried on. Under that alternative, would be well that the reverse of that as has been given be made. Employing, then, one under the supervision of such an one, that would care for the various characters of appliances and to care for the drug room, see?
-
(Q) With the present ethical conflicts it might be difficult to get the proper kind of M.D. to take a position in that status. (A) Not impossible. Not even improbable.
-
(Q) That is, we might be able to get a young student, or graduated student? (A) A graduate student.
-
(Q) Is there any school or individual who is now either desirous or in a position to recommend such young men for this position? (A) There is, as is seen, each year placed in various hospitals for interne work the graduates of various schools. WE would give, the better for association of this nature, from the HOMEOPATHIC school, capable of writing or accepting the services in such capacity. Those now serving in the homeopathic or clinic work in Philadelphia, New York, Boston, or ANY of the states in which the association or affiliation of the state work and state appliance affiliate with Virginia, or Virginia affiliates with.
-
(Q) Is there such an institution in the state of Virginia? (A) In Virginia, in Pennsylvania, in Massachusetts, in New York.
-
(Q) Is there any other advice, direction or instruction in regard to any specific present condition that you will give regarding our work, either the hospital or education? (A) The phases in the educational work need much attention. Not the consternation as may arise from some of the activities, but due consideration given all, and the educational departments should FUNCTION as fast as possible. That particularly in the matter of the various characters of publications that should go out under the auspices of the Association and its work.
-
(Q) The quarterly magazine - [See THE NEW TOMORROW, DECEMBER 1929 and April 1930, Vol. I No. 1 and 2, published by the Ass’n of National Investigators and copyrighted by Thomas J. Sugrue - file copies in A.R.E. Library. GD’s note: In May 1947 I think Thomas Sugrue influenced Eileen Garrett to call her new magazine TOMORROW.] (A) Should be one of those as should be the review, which should be by the time - this should be published, the review, by the first of April. The quarterly should be at least before the first of the year.
-
(Q) Is the material as now set up for the quarterly not in proper shape for publication? or is it of poor quality, as it has been pronounced? (A) Most of this is very good, and should be used in much the same state as it has been set up. Some of this should be changed materially, but at such a conference this may be EASILY clarified by the chairman of the board - Brown.
-
(Q) Is this well - or, there are two viewpoints of what such a publication might contain. One, that it should publish results. For example, it might publish that an expedition to Texas proved successful in discovering an unknown element. Then it might also add (which would be another viewpoint) where the information came from, and how it came, as to enable this expedition to BE successful. (A) Neither of these are exactly the point. Rather one the spectacular, the other the boastful, as this is directly set up - but rather that of what might be termed the intermediate character - between these two - or, as is specified in the purpose, the intent, and the way it is intended to be used - see?
-
(Q) Now, regarding this body, [900] or recent days or nights there have been some rather unusual experiences. One, for example - it repeatedly - the contacting the baby, or my son, [142]. Is it true that he actually contacts me subjectively, from a fourth dimensional viewpoint of space? (A) Here we have - it may be stated in one word - in fact, it is viewed and contacted from that viewpoint. Here we have an exemplification of the truth as is set forth in the manner as regarding that entity’s development through the material or earth’s experience. In the study of the characteristics or personality, or individuality of the entity, when there are consternations or worries present, or to come, is it a wonder that the subjective self should project itself to aid or to warn the other concerning its activities? These are the character of such presentations, even as they have come in their various forms. Study these well together, for much may be gained for each through these experiences.
-
(Q) Now, tomorrow I am to talk the second time on the subject, “My Concept of God”, as started last Sunday. Having before you last Sunday’s delivery, have you any instructions to me regarding tomorrow? (A) Begin with that concept of the necessity of that projection of the oneness of the Father into the world that man may gain that fourth dimensional concept of life, even as has been and is presented by self in the various teachings or addresses, and IN same each will find that oneness of purpose, even as set forth by Paul - in Romans twelve. Read that. And with that concept, keep that oneness before YOU.
-
(Q) Is it true, as some seem to think, that Paul has - as he told me - influenced many of these addresses? (A) Would this not be inferred from that just given? for in this you will see thine own self. You will SEE thine own self. [9/19/31 See 311-6, Par. 8-A indicating “Paul has already entered ‘in the mental world’”.]
-
(Q) Now, regarding the experience in which my father seemed to indicate something - possibly market-wise, that I did not understand - regarding rails, and return. (A) In that, that given was that this - the rails - would be the criterion for the various activities, especially as regarding industrials. This not heeded wholly, and hence the warning of the return to this same position, or to that that these will again return to their NORMAL activities.
-
(Q) Normal meaning lower from present levels, or regain their higher levels from which they have tumbled? (A) Will regain higher levels, though in a more NORMAL manner.
-
(Q) Now, regarding last night - where my policy, or marginal policy was (this was night before last) - yet when pondering that given, even the conversation after - while I was awake, there came - “Just be reasonable.” (A) The policies proper, as was given. The REASONABLENESS, that in the various changes that become NECESSARY - that reasonableness with the whole list be kept in accord with that given.
-
(Q) That is, I had to act as I did. (A) Correct.
-
(Q) The individual case, however - the one in particular question - might be dealt with - (A) Along more reasonable lines. [Mr. [900]: “As was done.”]
-
(Q) Now, is there any further advice, either regarding finance or marketwise, or regarding my Association work, that it is well for me to be instructed in at the present time? (A) As there stood by thee in the hours when most worry came, and the satisfaction that there would not be failure IN the guiding hand, then KEEP that faith in self and in the ability to be guided AT the Board.
-
(Q) Is there any advice regarding the immediate future of those conditions? (A) Only that it will be given thee in the hands in the hour in need.
-
(Q) Would it be well - (this first, before asking specific questions) to go into the axle company? that is, is it in general an exceptional proposition? (A) An exceptional proposition. There are only one or two phases of same to be mindful of. These cleared, then the proposition would be WELL to go into, for there is aid to many, and there is much money to be made from same. Those to be warned of are the two whom have been given the privilege of expanding and using the privileges of the patents. These have not been abused - Timkin one, see? as also one - no, not General Motors, but a division of same - these well looked into, the POSITIONS thoroughly understood - then consider it.
-
(Q) With regard to my physical, any changes that may be given at the present time? (A) These, as we find, may be materially aided by that introspective experience as is given from time to time. Do not put this off when presented. Rather DO it! for in application is strength. We are through for the present.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 10/11/29 Mr. [900]‘s letter to EC:
One of the most progressive and far reaching meetings took place yesterday, Thursday, October 10th, at the Willard Hotel, Washington, D.C. [137] and I feel that the problems of the Nation that were being determined in the White House nearby could not have been even as great in their import to the progress of the human race and to the development of the potential abilities and soul of man, as those plans discussed and determined upon by the Educational Board of our Association in its meeting at the Willard Hotel.
The enclosed letter [?] will give you details of what was planned. The magazine is to be departmentalized, and each individual who is equipped to do so, is to have charge of articles written either by himself or others, that come into his particular department…
The magazine is to come out December 15th, and it will be a beauty. One change in the letter-box department explained in my letter to Dr. Brown, [William Mosely Brown, Ph.D.] which please find enclosed. More than this, the Educational Board founded our University, of which Dr. brown is to be the Head, whether he is elected Governor or not. The enclosed letter explains that.
R2. 10/22/29 Mr. [900]‘s letter to EC:
Insofar as the educational problems are concerned, we have enough material already given to teach for a thousand years, and to me, that department seems to have a bright future. Dr. Brown and myself work together beautifully. There is something there from the old Grecian period, that makes us like to council with each other. So long as I keep my attitude in an advisory capacity, he reacts to me beautifully, and he seems himself to be considerate along those lines, and thus again the reading is borne out.
There are other little difficulties that I will try and take up with you in person when I am at the Beach this week-end, but I am sure we will get over the bumps and come out on top if we stay with the ship. Of course if we start pecking at each other, the crew under us are liable to become chaotic and the boat will lose its course.
I do not doubt that oftentimes I, who am relied upon to keep the threads together, am often at fault, i.e., possibly I should have less of the human faults, particularly in the way of lack of consideration, than is excusable in others. There is both comedy and tragedy in human weaknesses and human err, and I believe I appreciate something of both, as well as the physical reward and spiritual grace that virtue brings, all of which is only saying that period of transition for me is slower in this experience than it should be, everything considered, and that in the prolongation in that period of transition, I mentally swing like a pendulum between the two extremes, or in other words, even the eternal patience of higher nature of the forces are tried while waiting for me to land on a rock, and remain there fixed solid and true. Whether I shall accept from the forces the position of staff that leads to grace and glory, or the position of a destroyer that leads to chaos and tragedy, is the intuition I have at the moment. In the meantime, my brother seems to be carrying the light to show the way, for I know now that if we are the individuals that are to be the ones that are to do this work at this particular time, and not leave it for others to claim the glory thereof, then it is [137], who made you the promise, and myself, who answered with him, to do my share in the work, who must hold the letter and steer the ship in cooperation with the others. If we let go at this stage, then the ship must flounder and others must be raised up to take the helm.
Not that we are the important ones in the work, or that we dare take advantage of this, which is the very thing that will destroy the work, but rather that we are the ones mentally equipped to show the way, financially, educationally and otherwise. Others may do certain parts of the work better than we ever could do it, and certainly are able to do certain things better than we, and are better equipped to head certain departments than are we, and should head them, but through us are all united into one, and through us all come under the command of ONE, whether it pertains to health room, or any other enterprise. This is as I see it, yet, if I am wrong, I am willing to stand correction. Is this the way you analyze the situation?
[165] has his end, [257] his, [953] would have his, each of the girls have theirs, etc., etc., yet, we can show how each may make his or her end the application of the whole in terms of a certain department, and thus keep them all in harmony, rather than each pull his own way for his own selfish interest. That, it seems to me, is the job of a leader, rather than to be a boss.
You, no doubt, are at this moment concerned with your own position in the work. Frankly, you wonder at times, no doubt, if you are not but an instrument for the gratification of mens’ desires, rather than the means for them to do some good. Sometimes men seem to forget the sum that produces the balmy spring day to revel only in the gratification of their own desires and the clement weather permits. Sometimes we forget that the opportunity to do the good we are doing is ours, because you are willing to let men use your gift of mind to do that good, and this opportunity to do good is sometimes forgotten, because of human weaknesses, and self gratification substituted therefor. The latter condition is less serious to yourself, for it brings its own consternation to the individual concerned, but the former condition brings, of course, a feeling in your own mind that you are sort of a goat. In my own case, I have been guilty of the swing back and forth, above stated.
Not for one moment that I ever intentionally would use any man for my own benefit, rather do I see to help them, but it is simply that I fail at times to view every situation from all angles. Not that I change any intent, for I do not, but the application of my own excellent understanding is sometimes poor in that I fail to see the problem from every angle, and thus, the resultant consternation and conflict that could be easily avoided, when I consider the proposition from all sides. We all of us are somewhat guilty of trying to hedge a little in making the fourth dimension fit with the third dimension, rather than the third dimension demonstrate the existence of, and reality of, the fourth dimension. I believe this is clear without any further elaboration, and is a fault of some of the members of the Board more than others. Instead of showing that mind may operate in a businesslike manner, we try to make the loss of mind become that which governs the system of business. We try to make mind become that which is business instead of making mind become that which applied in one direction, may operate in a businesslike manner. In short, before we may teach others to understand themselves, we must understand our own selves, or in other words, that which we would teach others. So deep, so intense, so fundamental, are the requirements for a group to successfully use such a gift as yours, for universal good, that sometimes I shiver before the task as one, or even as the ancient Israelites must have shivered at the thought of the power of the Egyptian Government and the Egyptian Armies. Indeed, unless we have the same so-called miraculous aid from the forces that those ancient Jews had, it is almost beyond the realm of possibility in the light of the conflicting element in human need for us to harmoniously cooperate to do that, that we seek to do with this work.
There are certain laws or principles, or certain kind of life to live, that will make possible the aid of the higher forces, and thus, the successful accomplishment of our task in this aid, and this is that which each of us must learn, who are undertaking the responsibility of performing this task. This is what we are in process of learning, and I am sure if you will view the end from this angle, the fact that the men about you are in process of learning how to do the thing they are trying to do, the process of learning how to gain the cooperation of the divine forces that must be obtained, then you will be able to permit your patience to be tried, and to manifest, even in flesh, something of a Godlike patience that must be maintained, while men are in process of developing their own minds or souls.
We are all children learning to do our lesson, not to take in something, but to do our lesson, and we make many mistakes, and this work that seeks to help others in this very act, in this very process, exacts from us a greater knowledge of doing than may be expected from those whom we seek to teach, yet, while we stumble about you in our process of learning, pray not only that we may learn before it is too late to teach in this experience, but also that we may manifest the patience of the father while we learn, to teach that which he is trying to teach all upon your own patience, your own long suffering, and your own understanding, will depend the final outcome as to whether the swerl of human emotion will bring chaos and consternation and tragedy, or harmony, grace and glory.
If that is asking you to be superhuman and placing too great a responsibility on any one man, it is at least rendering you a position in the work that takes its place with a God, and that will live to be cherished as such. Surely, as the early Israelites were tried, and strengthened by them, surely you have been tried in your past life, and the strength you have received through such trials will carry you through the last lap.
I have never lost my affection for you, yours or the work, nor do I want to usurp any bossy power that in any way would seek to take advantage of anyone. Yet, be patient until I can completely find my own self, which is not so easy in the terrific strain and pressure that is constantly upon me, even from men who would use me to take advantage of the work, or of you, and even from my own lower nature. I will find the rock, and with it, the way to use the divine agency to bring harmony and peace that must surround such a work as ours.
With kindest regards to yourself and family, I remain
Yours sincerely, [900]
