This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at Nortonville, Kentucky, this 6th day of July, 1911, in accordance with request made by [948]”s uncle, Mr. [287].

Time of Reading 11:30 A. M. …, Ohio.

1. Dr. Ketchum: You have before you this morning, [948] of …, Ohio.

2. EC: The conditions we have in this body originated entirely from the outside of the body and date back to about 46 moons ago. We have a lack of coordination between the cerebro-spinal and the sympathetic nervous system, which manifests itself in several points in this body, particularly at the seventh and eighth dorsal, also in the lumbar region. In the dorsal region it affects the pulmonary system to some extent, but the main trouble is noticeable most in the lower part of the body.

3. We have a lack of lime and phosphates in the make-up of this body. There is also a lack of hydrocarbons [carbohydrates?] which has resulted in an imperfect nutrition to the muscular system of the limbs, which was preceded by this disturbance of the equilibrium to the nerves in the lower portion of the spine, as before referred to.

4. [Piece torn out of page] …in this body has also affected this condition to some extent, and will continue so until the cause is removed and the proper building material provided, because the nerve stimulation to this limb has, in a sense, been paralyzed.

5. As a result of all the above conditions we have this peculiar effect manifesting itself particularly in the locomotor muscles of the limb, due entirely to a faulty stimulation to the parts supplied.

6. TREATMENT: First: Correct conditions existing which produce this lack of coordination between the sympathetic and cerebro-spinal system in these parts by removing [osteopathically?] all lesions along the spine (the anterior lesions in particular, as they are motor).

7. Then correct diet by supplying proper nutrition, plenty of food rich in hydrocarbons [carbohydrates?]. Also, increase the lime and phosphates as much as possible.

8. Exercise this limb forward as far as possible every 10 hours, starting a little at a time and increase until maximum is reached.

9. Get the impression to the mind that she will get perfect use of this limb by perseverance, but it will take 18 months to get permanent results, provided care is exercised and all details are carried out.

10. To remove these lesions along the spine we must resort to outside force with the hands, or manipulation along the spine osteopathic?]. This, along with powerful suggestions to the mind, will be productive of results.

R1. GD’s note: In 1929 a booklet was printed containing Edgar Cayce’s own account of some of his experiences. It contained this account of [948]:

Just one more. Some years ago a man [287] came into my home one evening. He said: “Cayce, I’ve been hearing about the things you do. My brother-in-law has a little girl [948] that is in a very bad shape. I wonder if you can help her.”

“I do not know,” I replied, “but I’ll try.”

The reading showed after effects of infantile paralysis, and the inability to use one of the lower limbs. An outline of a treatment was suggested that would cover a period of fourteen months, after which she would be well. It was followed, and she IS well.

R2. 1/22/42 Mrs. [948] requested 2663-1 for her baby daughter, 5 years old.

R3. 6/21/72 Mrs. [948]‘s son requested copies of [948]‘s readings available from our files (the two readings concerning pneumonia, 948-2 and 948-3), saying: “My mother [948] was cured of polio at age 6 years by following the prescribed procedure given in a reading in about 1913.”

R4. 6/27/72 GD’s note: Readings sent with request that if the original reading on [948] regarding polio were available, that they please send it to E.C.F. for our records.

R5. 7/20/72 Letter from [948] received acknowledging receipt of readings 948-2 & 948-3, containing lengthy information re: family and the following:

“I have the original copy of my first reading done in July, 1911 (age 3 1/2). I shall have it xeroxed and send it to you for the files. As you know, my parents carried out the treatment, to the letter and I am living proof that it worked…

“I continue to be grateful that Mr. Cayce touched our lives. I realize more and more the truths of his teachings, and the influence they have on today’s world.” Sincerely, [948]

B1. Reading [948-1] requested by [948]‘s uncle, Mr. [287]. At the time of the request, Edgar Cayce was not aware that the child was a polio case.

B2. 7/6/11 Aunt, [2646]‘s letter to her mother, [4382], little [948]‘s maternal grandmother:

“Enclosed find diagnosis of [948]‘s case. Dr. Ketchum, Mr. Cayce and Mr. Noe, proprietor of the hotel [Hotel Latham] at Hopkinsville, came up on the morning train. Before dinner, just 11:30 he diagnosed her case. Now this is not half that he said but the MAIN POINTS. Our stenographer did not want to take notes as she said she did not understand the medical words he used but Dr. Ketchum caught all of that and that is the main… I heard every word he said and Mr. Cayce is wonderful. [287] told me to write [948]‘s name and address on paper and give to Dr. Ketchum and after Cayce was asleep told him her name and address. He talked about 10 minutes fast. I had Dr. Ketchum ask several questions such as the cause. The answer was a nervous condition on or before birth (now HE did not know if she was 3 yrs. or 75 yrs. old or whether man, woman, or child); he is simply a wonder. When he commenced about her limb, I could not believe it myself and tried to hear every word. I am sorry that we could not have their stenographer and get every word that he said, for he certainly does know. You notice he speaks about 46 moons. There are 13 moons in a year. That would make [948] 3 years and 7 months and that is about her age now. Have just had a talk with the Dr. in regard to treatment. He thought osteopathy and vibration would be the treatment. I had another question asked Cayce, if there was a cure for her and how long. He said yes, it’s slow, would take 18 months. I see the stenographer missed this too. Now if I get a chance again I will have her case gone over again with their stenographer. I must stop and finish again as they are going to have Cayce diagnose another case before leaving…”
