Born March 12, 1899, in New York City. Time of Reading 11:25 to 12:15 Noon - Eastern Standard Time. New York City. (Life Reading Suggestion)

1. EC: Call the self Millicent [middle given name] rather than […] [first given name as now used].

2. Yes, we have the body and those records that have been made by that entity now called [1387].

3. Call the name Millicent. It will make much difference, as we shall see, in what may be accomplished.

4. In giving the interpretations of the relationships of the entity with the universal forces, something of the manner in which the records are interpreted should be given; that the entity may study and apply that which may be helpful in the present experience.

5. While the astrological aspects have their relative influence, know that these are relative.

6. The earthly or material sojourns have their influence also, yet these influence more through the emotional nature.

7. Hence there is between the two that factor which ever makes for the changing influence, or the effect of these upon the individual activity of the entity - THE WILL FORCE.

8. However, the experiences in the astrological sojourns or in the sojourns about the earth are as a portion of the experience, just as the sojourns in the earth.

9. And one sojourn in the earth stands out beyond all the rest - INDO-CHINA.

10. In giving then the urges that arise between these two influences, we find these as outstanding in the intuitive and in the emotional forces of the entity:

11. One that is very easily influenced by vibrations. This is an experience of the soul self from not only the astrological but from the material sojourns.

12. Those things of beauty, those things of harmony, those things of nature, those things of helpful influence, all become a part of the entity’s innate influence and force.

13. The beauty as of a sunset or the movement of a serpent upon a rock - these have each an equal influence for the entity; for they take hold upon those things that are not elementals but the elements of the influences that impel individuals.

14. And this is the deeper self of the entity - the impelling force in the lives of individuals, of groups, of states, of nations, of a whole earth. All of these have for the entity an impelling force, as the crescendo of an orchestra, as the coo of a dove, as the lightning or as the murmur of a brook. These - in their extremes yet in their beauty - impel, influence, increase in the experience of the entity the worth whileness.

15. Hence if this is sought within the self, because of this, and held to and built upon, one may gain, one may give peace, harmony, beauty, joy, hope in the experiences of others.

16. For the entity has much work to do in this experience; many joys to know, many sorrows to experience. These are a part of life.

17. What, then, is Life, to the entity?

18. The expression of the divine within the realm of human experience, that others, too, may know and take hold upon God - and find Him good.

19. For being holy is just being kind, gentle, patient, long-suffering. These are manners, means and ways of finding why, how, these influences - that bespeak of the soul’s relationship to the Creative Forces - take hold upon the inner self for growth.

20. Then truth, then life, to the human experience, is a growth. You grow in grace, in knowledge, in understanding of the Lord and His ways.

21. Hold fast to that which is good, and there may be accomplished in the experience that which brings peace to the soul.

22. We find the astrological aspects of the watery way or Pisces, Jupiter, Venus, all in the ascendency for benevolent influences; that is, love, harmony, beauty, grace, bigness of purpose, truth, honesty, sincerity, all become as forces that are magnifying of the relationships of self to the universe and to Creative Forces.

23. Hence in writing, in music, in that which depicts the beautiful, is the life’s work of the entity.

24. For as is given in the common parlance, as you do it unto the least of your brethren you do it unto your Maker.

25. The study, the understanding, the interpretation of the emotions of others as well as of that which prompts self becomes the life’s work, the why in the experience of the entity.

26. Those influences that are detrimental we find in fire, in that opposed to the beautiful or in the black arts - the seeking for rhythm of a nature to take the place of the harmony of the spheres.

27. Study the difference between rhythm and harmony; in the beauty of the rose, the sunset, the movements in nature.

28. As to the appearances in the earth that make for the emotional forces, we find - as indicated - one appearance so overshadows the others that it projects itself through the sojourns in other environs, other experiences, and into the present.

29. It is understood that these are not merely axioms, they are not merely words, but have their intent, their purpose, their meaning in the experience of self as well as in the life, the sojourn, the experience of others:

30. What you sow in the flesh you reap in the flesh. What you sow in the spirit, in the mind, you reap in the mind.

31. As you give, so is it given. Only what you have given away do you possess. What you lose was never yours. What you gain is an opportunity. What you possess is not yours except as you use it in relationships to others, to your Maker, to your purpose, to your fellow man.

32. Not all appearances are given, then, but those that make for an influence in the experience of the entity in the present. Then as the application is made, as there is the growth, more and more will there become a unison of that undertaken as Princess La in Indo-China, where there are uncoverings even now of the city in which the entity resided.

33. The earthly sojourn just preceding the present one, though, we find was in the land of the present nativity; during those periods when there were the early portions of the activities in what is now known as or called Providence town (Provincetown?).

34. It was in those environs when there was much ado made respecting the activities of those who attempted the interpretations of the movements and motivative forces that prompted the activities, when others were persecuted for those activities, for those familiar spirits, for those undertakings.

35. Then in the name Lillian Garth, the entity gained. Not only did the entity aid in making for a better understanding but for a better interpretation of that which prompted the ministers, the teachers, the leaders, in their persecutions as well as tempering of those who had material experiences of mental and spiritual visions for their use in a more practical, purposeful manner.

36. To THAT the entity may hold in the present, and find the experiences worth much; as well as the activities from the East Indian, as well as the peoples who persecuted those who had such experiences.

37. Before that we find the entity sojourned in the English land during those periods when there were those joinings together for the Crusades.

38. The entity was among those who were left, those who were not understood, those who were not trusted.

39. Hence we find in the experience then, as Catharine Carnwell, the entity was one that suffered in body, suffered in mind; yet made for mental gains during that experience.

40. For those influences of that period make the entity in the present, as it were, “careful” here, there, in the relationships, in the trusts that are given, in the trusts that are necessarily made by self respecting others. Also they make for the questioning of purposes as to those with an over religious tend or trend. And these are well.

41. The entity then was well balanced in mind, in body, in purpose, in aims; yet from the material suffered mentally, physically - yet gained, because of the soul experience.

42. In the present we find the entity mentally and physically balanced. So, keep that which is good in these directions.

43. Before that we find the entity was in the earth during that period when the Master walked in the earth, and during those influences of the persecutions and that of want in body.

44. Those were a portion of the entity’s experience, and have brought that which has ever been and is in the experience in the present - the wonderment at those who may suffer in body, in the things of life or of material experience, for a cause.

45. Not that the entity is not given to charity, yet patience AND charity are portions of the lesson to learn in this experience.

46. The name then was Charlean.

47. Before that we find the sojourn that is the outstanding one; during those periods when there were the attempts upon the part of the teachers from Egypt, India, Mu and China to correlate the truths.

48. The entity then was a princess in the City of Gold; and in the temple of same did the entity minister - not only to her own people but in aiding to draw the activities from other lands; as from Saneid, as from Ra, as from Wu, and as from the teachers from the Carpathians and from Og (Oz?). These all were a part of the entity’s activities - the teachings of these.

49. And as the entity gave hope, understanding, faith, confidence, knowledge to the whole of the earth in those experiences, so may the same be a part of the experiences in the present; in writing, in teaching, in ministering through those channels where harmony and peace may reign in the experiences of those who are divided as to the source, the purpose.

50. For, know this: Know in WHOM you have believed as much as or more than in WHAT you believe; and know that He in WHOM you have believed is able to keep that in your experience against ANY experience that may arise in your activity; whether mental, spiritual, material.

51. For the earth is the Lord’s (as you did so oft proclaim), and the fulness thereof.

52. Hence all power, all glory, is His, and not of any individual entity but an entity that is of the Holy One - God.

53. Keep, then, that thou didst give to thy peoples, to those of India, to those of Egypt, to those of China, to those of Persia, and to those of all the lands from which the various teachers in the period attempted to correlate the truths.

54. Hence your interpretation of he that has a vision of the elementals, as well as he that has the vision of the angel or of the loved one, is just as purposeful, just as helpful in this experience as in that sojourn when as Lala you gave so much to the world and kept those tenets of Ra, of Saneid, of Wu, of Og, AS those that made for the foundation upon which He whom thou sawest in the garden brings to the world the understanding in the present.

55. Before that we find the entity was in the land now thought of or termed as La, or Mu - Lamu.

56. Those experiences then made for the determining between the thought forms and those that materialized into what became man.

57. These are a part of that to which the entity may gain by the study first of self.

58. As to the abilities of the entity in the present, then, and that to which it may attain - and how:

59. First, study to show thyself approved unto THY ideal, thy Maker - the god within self, yet the God without self.

60. Keep the self unspotted from questionings of thine own conscience.

61. Then give of thyself, of thy understanding, in the interpreting of the experiences of others in their relationships to Creative Forces, and differentiating between elementals.

62. Ready for questions.

63. (Q) Can you tell anything about the Maya incarnation? (A) This was a portion of the Indo-China experience; it was a part of the same.

64. (Q) Anything particular I should do in my own work to better it? (A) As has been indicated, first know within self WHERE you are headed, what is your purpose - then as you study to use that which is a part of your own heritage, you become more and more close to the adepts of yourself - that adapting of yourself in the experiences that are a part of your own self.

65. (Q) Is Abdulla, the guide that I have, a worthy one to work with? (A) Only when such influences are kept in accord with your own ideal are they worthy; but keep thine own ideal!

For each soul must answer to self and the consciousness within!

66. (Q) Why should I be called Millicent? Please explain.

(A) Gain what is the meaning of same; as one that ministers with, one that gives to, one that interprets for, one that means so much to, others.

Honorable Ra-Ta;

Thank you so much for the autograph in my copy of “There Is A River”. The thought is a good one to remember. The book is beautifully constructed, physically, and I am sure when I get the time to read it will be even more so, spiritually. The picture of you, too, is a true one and has caught a very real quality of you. In all, the book is something that any of us who have had the honor of knowing you personally will prize most highly and for those who have not had that boon will be an introduction to another school of thought. May it reach all those who can benefit by it as a document of one great soul’s accomplishment in this incarnation in another hectic age.

To make the sad step from your accomplishment to my failure is what I must do now. I am about to return the Egyptian material to you as I had not been able to do anything with it. My life this past year has been going from bad to worse in every respect. My health has not improved so I’ve given up doing anything about that. Nobody wants my book so I’m ready to burn that up and stop wasting money sending it around. And last and worst I found out yesterday that I am to be out of the job I’ve held for 24 years. The Laboratory is to be closed as they don’t expect any students. So here I am at 43 with all my business contacts lost in the years spent in the educational world and will have to go out looking for a job. All the money that has been spent in insurance and annuity hospitalization etc now will be lost for the rates to carry it outside I could not manage for there is no job outside that I can get into that will duplicate the thing I built here so it means going back to $25 a week calculating machine operator…if I’m not too old to even get placed at that.

So the sum total of my life’s efforts is complete failure and I’m afraid actually experience has proven that my materially minded friends were right after all and all the glowing picture of what I was told I would be able to accomplish…what I had been incarnated for - was just a mirage.

I’m sorry to have to admit that all my effort has been useless and not to have faith in anything any more. It certainly makes life an empty shell and does not make me too anxious to hang on to.

The only compensation has been knowing you for if there is anything at all you have been a shining example of going about helping your fellowman and even if I can’t any longer believe in anything or have faith in any Law or any Divine Justice, I can believe in the truth of your goodness.

I’m sorry to have failed with the Egyptian material…but I don’t suppose I should be surprised as I’ve failed in everything in life so why should I expect anything different in doing that.

My Dear [1387]

Have yours of the 13th. Appreciate your comment on the physical construction of the book - hope you read it and then tell me what you think the author did for the subject.

Am really disturbed about your attitude just now. Please don’t give up! The darkest hour is oft just before the dawn! What one accomplishes here doesn’t really - on the material accumulations one has about them - but the deeper inner meaning as you have so beautifully shown in your book; that thought expressed there you have builded now, you must live up to it - it isn’t just a fancy any more, it is a living thing in your own superconscious mind. Don’t let the materialist attitude get hold - they will conflict and there is ever sufficient warring between the flesh and the Spirit any way; and ideals builded have to be manifested in one’s own life - dealing with every phase of one’s experience. Let’s look at it as rather something as necessary to better fit you for work HE has for you to do and after awhile am sure you will see it in that light.

Am sure if you have read the book that is spoken not from hearsay but actual experience. If there was any one that has been disillusioned as respecting material show [sure] believe can certainly qualify as a living example! Hold tight - trust God and do the right. All that is in the earth is HIS and He merely lends His power to others to use and as to what one does with it makes each grow or become discouraged and throw the whole thing overboard. “They as endure unto the end - shall wear the Crown.”

Do not pretend to be the preacher, but know you know the real way and you just must hold to the FAITH of the right and it will prevail.

R10. 12/26/42 “Thank you so very much for your kind and helpful letter. “It was the most wonderful Christmas present I could receive. I did need, so badly, just the help you gave me. To hear from someone who really lives what he believes, and could assure me that the fight was worth while, did more for me than all else. It was not only the financial upset that bothered me most, but something else much closer to my heart, which I did not mention in my letter, that really took away my last shred of courage. Things have not been well with the one I love, the ‘John […]’ of the … book. He has been worked to such a degree that he is just not himself.

I had not seen or heard from him in almost 3 months, and conditions are such I am not free to get information. He had been so ill looking the last time I saw him for a few seconds I could not get his face out of my mind. What was so awful was he had lost his fighting spirit and I felt his desire even to live. So much had been promised us and we had such high hope of how we would eventually be able to serve together - and now he, when courage had always been so bright, looked like a crushed, lifeless, husk - the flame of life almost extinguished and all hope gone. That is what really got me. I did not think I had the courage to again have taken away from me the one thing that would make any sense to life… Always, before he came into my life, I have had to take the responsibility in everything, and he was so different, so sure, so strong, I felt at last I could be the one to lean and take courage from him - then the chain of events has worn him down so he is wrecked. It was all too much…

“Nothing is better - in fact everything looks worse than at any time but somehow inside of me the flame of hope has been kindled… Please pray for us. We do need help so badly - and I’ll try not to fail you again. My deepest thanks for your help.” Love, [1387]

R11. 4/15/43 EC’s letter asked if she’d consider coming to work on the compilation of the readings, if money were available, since HLC was going into the army and he, EC, would have too much responsibility.

R12. 4/21/43 Miss [1387]‘s ltr. to EC:

I was very deeply touched that you thought there might be a possibility that there would be something I could do for the association. I certainly am in a very unhappy spot where I am but I don’t see that I would dare even think of the Association offer for a number of reasons. First and foremost I am tied up in a rather strange way with family matters. All the men in our family have passed on (it was just seven years today my father went) and there are four widows left, all over 70 and some over 75. There is no one to do anything for them but me. I have all their affairs in hand and while they are left I don’t dare think of considering anything that would take me away from New York City. Even if it were just my mother I do not know that I would feel justified in taking her away from the place where she has lived all her life and I could not leave her here alone.

If I were all alone I would jump at the chance to be of service in this way but at present I’m still held by the responsibility that has been my lot all my life. I am just praying that my health hold out until I can get in more congenial surroundings, Monday I just about reached the end and had the crack-up that has been hovering so long. I managed to hold out until that Devil I’m working now got out of my office then I went to pieces. My doctor (in October I finally went back to Dr. Seymour the woman doctor friend of my father’s who took care of me when I almost passed with kidney trouble in 1934) told me Saturday that something has got to be done that she has not said anything to me because she did not want to worry me any more but I was dangerously near a serious crack-up. She is keeping me going with injections and lights etc, but she can’t perform miracles. So I’m certainly in a spot. I’m been told from a couple of sources that this month was supposed to bring me a new job and I’ve held on to that frail hope. Here your offer comes but even if it worked out so you could make it officially I could not see my way clear to accept it.

I have from now until Monday off so I’m hoping to get a lot of rest which may help me hold out.

Thank you so much, dear Ra-Ta for your offer. I would not be surprised that someday something works out so that I can be of help in your work even though this present things does not seem possible. I imagine you got a reading to find out if I could do the work all right, I’d have no confidence in myself.

R14. 4/30/43 She submitted the idea of “Letters from the Mail Bag” to be used when Bulletin material was short. [She was guest editor for the A.R.E. Bulletin for November, 1943.]

R15. 10/26/43 She submitted her compilation of EC readings for the A.R.E. December 1943 Bulletin, saying: “I have been working like MAD on the Egyptian material and think I have it all blocked out now and will spend the time between now and when you get here writing it up in chronological order. I do hope you like it. I am really thrilled by it and the way it seems to move along as I am writing.”

Dear Hugh Lynn;

I want to thank you very much for a delightful luncheon last week. I cannot tell you how pleased I was to find you looking so well in spite of your hardships in all directions during the past few years.

Since I saw you things have been moving pretty rapidly for me. As you may perhaps remember I have been fighting this group who have been trying to get me out of … for the past few years and they have finally won their point and I sever my connections here at the end of next week. I had started my 25th year last October. The thing that fascinates me is that last December Ariel Taylor [Ariel Yvon Tayler, numerologist] told me that I SHOULD get out of here sometime in my 25th year as it was the end of a large cycle and I should be starting on the first rung of a second cycle and to stay would not be good and to welcome the change, regardless of how it came. This has been a life-saver in my taking this blow. She also said that it looked as if I would make a connection in January 1946 with something which had a humanitarian angle…was connected with the government in some way and came through someone I had known previously. Well I start to work on January 2nd with The National … The government is interested in what they are doing and it came through people here at the … whom I have been working for part-time for the past year and a half. So she certainly hit the nail on the head!

Oh, while I think of it would you please ask the office to change my address on their records to my home … Street, New York 32 N.Y. as they will have to readdress all material sent here in the future.

I shall be looking forward to seeing you when you come to New York and with this new outfit I shall not have to do some [so] much overtime work I HOPE and may in time get to feel like a human being again.

R18. 2/5/46 HLC’s letter: “Recently had a letter from a minister in that area asking for names of a few psychics. He is making a study. Can you suggest or recommend?”

R19. 2/12/46 Miss [1387]‘s ltr. to HLC:

I shall give you the name of the only two mediums, now operating in New York City, whom I consider sincere and have certain power to contact the other side…of course we both understand that this is not the ideal way of handling this whole matter of contact…but they are doing a service and with those of us who are not able to accomplish the thing directly they do help.

The first is Mrs. Carolyn Chilvers Duke who is the head of the Independent Association of Spiritualists and Pastor of Brotherhood House at 244 West 75th Street. She holds services on Sunday evenings at 7:30 and Monday evenings at 8 P.M. and Wednesday afternoon at 2:15. She works slowly and gives a lot of time, which irritates a lot of people but that is her way and as you know people who have this power are law unto themselves… She is the person who contacted Ra-Ta from the very time of his passing and told me you would call me when you did…

The other is Reverend William C. Owens of The Temple of Light 152 West 42nd St., New York 18. You and I went there the time we “did” some of the places some years back. There is never any way of knowing what will come through…there is so much to be taken into the picture at any particular time… anyhow I know he has done some good work…if all these people only demonstrated more in their own lives the action of the Law one could have so much more faith in what they say.

Another man who certainly teaches THE LAW…but is as dead against the average spiritualist as was your father is Emmet Fox… He certainly has made the thing “work” and is a good lecturer…worth listening to anytime…most constructive. He holds his meeting at the Manhattan Opera House on Wednesday evenings at 8 P.M. and on Sunday morning… sometime when I have a real chance to talk with you I shall tell you of the interview he was kind enough to grant me a couple of years back…it was most interesting.

Oh, I forgot to tell you that Owens has meetings on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday evenings at 8 P.M. and on Sunday Morning (this a healing service…sermon and no message) and Sunday Evenings…also Tuesday and Friday afternoons…at 2 P.M.

Just as soon as I get a little more settled in this new job and get my family affairs somewhat unraveled I shall make the effort to contact […] as you requested. My time is really not my own…my mother would be the last person in the world to think she was “cramping” my style, but she really objects to the one evening, Thursday, when I go to my doctor and then to a private class on the Kabala…she says I’m out “every” night…so I do not feel free to be away from home every other time. In this new job I do not have any afternoon time off as I did before…

Dear Hugh Lynn:

I wish to acknowledge your letter of May 2nd in regard to the conferences to be held at Margaret Hall’s and the question of continued membership in the Association.

For a long time past I have felt very guilty in continuing to receive the material from the Association when I was no longer contributing either financially or in any other way to its support. I am very glad that you have brought up the matter as I did not know how to approach the subject artistically, as it were. I have talked it over with [2487] many times without arriving at any solution. Your letter has given me the much desired opportunity.

Here is how I feel about it. The conditions in not a single department of my life have improved these past few years. The leisure time I used to have has completely vanished into thin air. My present position is more than just demanding. I work from 8:45 A.M. until 7 P.M. as a regular routine. This work is carried on under terrific pressure all the time. As can be readily understood my health is poor - one cannot go against all the laws of nature and expect to bloom. The time I am home I am do exhausted I have neither strength nor inclination to do anything but go to bed. I am most certainly not a shining example of a person who has made the “Law” operate in any respect. I therefore do not feel that I have any moral right to try to influence other people when I am not able to make the demonstration myself.

I thank you for having kept me on your list for such a long time. It was most generous of you and I think you are wise in not carrying any longer a load of dead wood…and I include myself in that category.

R21. 8/58 GD’s note: Miss [2487] told me that Miss [1387]‘s mother, whom she has cared for these many years, died. While she complained much for having to do this while the mother was living, now that she is gone Miss [1387] is grieving - grieving - grieving - over her mother’s death.
