This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 9th day of January, 1934, in accordance with request made by self - Mr. [440], Jr., Active Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.

Time of Reading … Avenue, 4:30 to 5:10 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. New York City. (Body and enquiring mind, in regard to information through these sources and activities for the coming year)

1. EC: Yes, we have the body, the enquiring mind, [440] present in this room, together with the information that has been given this body through these channels.

2. Ready for questions.

3. (Q) Will ironizing the body through the pellets be detrimental in any way? (A) It will make for a quicker healing and will not produce detrimental effects. As indicated, there would be healing if there is allowed time. If the conditions, the surroundings are such that the body desires quicker activity, then use these that we have indicated.

4. (Q) Should it be taken along with the rest that has been suggested? (A) Take a pellet each evening.

5. (Q) What is the value in ironizing the body? (A) Making for those elements or constituents in the blood stream that will make for better, more perfect coagulation in relationships to the portions that have been injured in a manner that makes for the characterization of impossible or impractical in the present condition of producing the proper healing influences to same.

6. (Q) In relation to the lapis, I found a 9000 lbs. stone enclosed in a glass case, etc. Is this the one referred to? (A) This, as we find, is the one referred to - though it has been moved from its former locations or surroundings, but is in general in the same - AND the stone as referred to.

As there is in the mind of the body, [440] confusions respecting lapis and lapis linguis - it has been given the lapis linguis is that name which was implied to touchstones, or those used by initiates in their various ceremonial activities, and hence gained for themselves through those forces that are seen, as indicated, that they adhere to the activities of those bodies or associations in such a way and manner (the stones, see?) that those that are of a psychic turn may hear the emanations as retained or thrown off by influences about such stones. They are of semi-gem or semi-value to those for other than decorative or for those that have not as yet comprehended, or there has not been admitted by certain fields of activity the value of such stones in relationships to such conditions for those that are not gifted or those that are not so sensitive as to be able to hear those vibrations giving off, or the singing or talking stones - as they have been called in places. Yet, as has been indicated for this body, there should be - there is - the ability within this body, [440], we are speaking of, to hear the singing or the movements, much as in the same way and manner as was given or is given to any if they will listen for days at a growing tree, or as was accredited to and as heard by many of those who have so developed in certain portions of this world as to be able to gain much from especially the growing oak, or certain other trees peculiar to those vicinities. So, in this stone lapis. Lapis linguis is that one that has been in use or in touch with those whose vibrations or emanations or auras are of such natures as to have given those vibrations in the nature that any portion of such a stone may give off that which may be heard, see?

7. (Q) Will it being in a glass case interfere with my hearing it sing? (A) It should not interfere wholly, though it will not be heard - to be sure - through the glass as definitely as were it separated.

8. (Q) This stone contains malekite and azurite. Is the lapis linguis either of these? (A) The azurite.

9. (Q) Where will I find this stone in Arizona? (A) As indicated, about the place as given - in a ranch - a hundred to a hundred and twenty-five miles north to northwest of the place. Many various characters of this lapis may be found in Arizona, as may be of other stones in the same vicinity of a semi-precious value or nature, but those that are of the greater value as the touchstones or those that may receive (we are putting it in another form or manner) a blessing and transmit same to another, or a curse and transmit same to another, will be found in the nature where the greater portion of the azurite is evidenced in the immediate vicinity.

10. (Q) How will I know when I have found this stone that is most useful for my purposes? (A) When there is found that which is sufficiently clear for the transmission of light and that which may be held in the hand for five to ten minutes and then set aside and listening hear the movements or the vibrations given off from the emanations from self.

11. (Q) Should it be translucent to light? (A) Should be transparent, or sufficient for the light to pass through.

12. (Q) Should this touch the skin in wearing it? (A) To be sure. Usually worn, of course, around the neck or over the body close to the vibrations from the heart or from the breast itself in its vibrations.

13. (Q) Would it not be best over the lyden gland? [Leydigian gland?] (A) Not be best over the lyden gland, for too great emanations from its surroundings might influence the body itself. You are used to influence the stone to an effect, either upon those to whom it may be given or to bring for self the ability to aid in its abilities as raising the vibrations for self. Hence would come over this particular portion, or if desired - for the better in training of self - held over that portion of the hollow on the left side above what is commonly called the collar bone.

14. (Q) What is the best method of cutting, and what metals should be used in mounting? (A) Use in cutting the ordinary use for the precious or semi-precious stones, in whatever shapes or forms - that are usually the larger in the center and tapering towards the outer edge. Of course, not too large for the use to be worn. The mountings would be white gold or silver. [See Source File Key #440 for A.R.E. Journal article in re Tuaoi Stone.]

15. (Q) Do you find it well for me to drive to Arizona? What days best? (A) As we find, the conditions that surround such a journey or such a trip would be well to motor - and, of course, the more southern route than going straight across. The days or the periods may be when the body has set self as to the time, as to its activity to meet with itself. Use the days, rather than being used by the days - for the activities in this direction.

This to some may appear to be confusing, with that ordinarily attributed to the value of varied days in individuals’ activity or associations in certain directions, as being the astrological activities when the influences would be greater. Influences from astrological make for TENDENCIES, but there is ever the will in the associations of each and every soul. With this body, as has been given, there is an even balance in self. Not that this does not imply that at the present time something is to be done about it, for to sit still would be to become sterile in the mental or the physical or the activities in even the spiritual or mental development, but to use the abilities. Hence using a cataloging, as it were. First making for self in all of its activities, certain periods for rest, for mental exertion, for mental activity, periods of recreation in the various characters and natures; in other words, budgeting the time, and yet making for advancement not as rote or as just plain routine - but SEE the value in self, in self’s development, of so budgeting self and self’s activities as to know that the best or the better balance may be kept within self in its advancement in every phase of its mental, physical or spiritual activity. Do not neglect one for another, but to be well balanced is only to be well equipped and doesn’t mean movement or activity has begun. The knowledge of self, the knowledge of the various influences in the experience of self is only valuable or constructive when applied in the experience of self. Hence, get busy!

16. (Q) Do you know of one whom I could assist by taking to Arizona? (A) There may be many that may be suggested. These that would be companionable, helpful - such an one as we would find in House.

17. (Q) To whom do you refer? (A) House?

18. (Q) Thomas House? (A) Thomas House! [Thomas B. House, Jr.]

19. (Q) Should I go straight to Ringle on arrival, or would it be well - (A) As we would find, the better plan would be to first go to Albuquerque, see, and there gain through the research of the genealogy of the activities of all the various forces or sources as applied to the activities in the State respecting that character of stone sought, see? KNOW what this is. This, of course, is not in the same State, but the geography and the greater portion of the minerals of the State may be gained here better, with less excitement of what is being sought by the body, than proceeding to Prescott or Tucson and arousing the curiosity of every one, see? Find it in the adjoining, and then go to the ranch for a period of rest or recuperation and to lay out the plans, and also in Albuquerque gain from Ringle there (this is a different one) the proper connections or associations, and where and how to gain that desired from Ringle in Arizona.

20. (Q) What is the first name of the Ringle in Albuquerque? (A) Leonna or Cecil, or both of them. [Mr. & Mrs. Cecil S. Ringle.]

21. (Q) In Phoenix? [See 440-3, Par. 9-A on 12/18/33.] (A) A. L. Ringle.

22. (Q) Is Phoenix the correct address? (A) From Albuquerque we may get the change in the address, for he is oft out on sight or on search, see? [GD’s note: I think A. L. Ringle was an uncle of Cecil S. Ringle.]

23. (Q) Who are my associates with the Edison laboratories? (A) Rather acquaintances there than direct associates that have been, as was indicated that through the acquaintances, through the associates there might be aroused that interest necessary for the carrying on of the portion of the research desired to be had through these channels. Not so much in the first is there the desire here for the actuale in the work itself, but in the preparations for the ground for first information than for associations in the research; for, as given, much of a psychic or spiritual (if it’s desired to be given that name) nature may be had not only in self but in the contacts and associations with self respecting the connections there.

24. (Q) Who are the associates with Steinmetz dealing with electrical - (A) They are they rather who worked with, or who studied or considered with Steinmetz, see? As associated with the activities and research departments of the General Electrical activities in Schenectady and THEIR environ. To be sure, there are offices or channels in New York or in the acquaintanceship or in the associations that may be worked out, see? These we would not hurry; we would not rush. Rather make the inquiries and make gradually the connections; don’t rush too hurriedly until you know what you want to present WHEN your associations and connections are established. Work well with that you have in hand in the present. Know that the preparations being made in self between now and April are rather of getting self internally set properly as to its proper way of thinking, of its definite way and manner of finding or presenting these influences in the experience of self, and then these will work gradually into that which will make for the basis of those things in connection with the various things that are of particular interest in the present time, that will make for not only self’s being interested in life itself and that it may accomplish but also that accomplished by self may be for the good of many.

25. (Q) What has Steuer written? (A) As we find, that associated with some of those very things being sought as related to the things necessary for the mental development. As to names, we do not see them here. We would seek those out.

26. (Q) What is Steuer’s first name? (A) S. L.

27. (Q) What is Wallace’s first name? (A) A. V.

28. (Q) Do you know of any books better than those of T. J. J. See regarding etheronic energy, etc.? [See 440-11 Reports, Par. R31—R34 in re T. J. J. See.] (A) As we find in general, there has been little approach to the subject better than these, but much of a background for the proper understanding of that being presented here is necessary - that may be gained in relation to the influences of the outside world, or in “This Mysterious Universe” or the like, see? [OUR MYSTERIOUS UNIVERSE By Sir James Jeans]

29. (Q) Would you recommend my experimenting with either of the machines given through these sources in the next few months? (A) Yes, we would experiment with these, in even the open fields when working, when searching, when finding out those things that are being sought. We would find how, when, where these influences may be directed with that you ALREADY have in hand, see?

30. (Q) Which instrument would be the better for this? (A) That you have had here - last presented.

31. (Q) You find that one better than the one formerly given, when using elements for the crystal? (A) Well, this one presents a more universal vibration for a more universal effect, while the other may be made for more specific conditions in certain fields of activity. But for the general experimentation and for self in the present, with those changes that have been indicated for the reception or for the transmission through that received or vibrated for or directed to activities in any direction, would be the better.

32. (Q) You have no improvements on the coils? (A) No improvements on the coils, until there is further experimentation with that especially in the effect upon, or the directing effect upon, plant life.

33. (Q) How will this instrument help locate the azurite? (A) It would assist in locating the azurite by more of the influence that it would create in those that would contact or raise their own vibrations by the use of same in directing of its activity in other directions, than in pointing out directly the azurite. For, it is turned then from within, you see, to increase - as may be said - the susceptibility in the direction for seeking that which will be as a transmuting or of emanations - for it’s quite different in these and in their activity, as will be seen - or these directions for the plants, and we will find there will come to those experiences of the body that which will be the most beneficial for the present.

R1. 1/10/34 EC’s letter to Thomas House, Jr.: “Dear Tommy: [440], of New York, in one of his readings yesterday afternoon asked who he might help and have as companion on his visit to Arizona in February and March. The reading gave: ‘House - Thomas House’.

“He asked, of course, about this afterwards, and suggested that I write you, as he expects to write you himself. You, no doubt, will hear by the time you receive this letter. He no doubt will explain to you the whole proceedings.

“He is going primarily for his health. I don’t mean by that he is an invalid and that you are to play ‘nurse maid’, but he is also going to, during his visit there, test out a machine that you, no doubt, will find interesting. It is one of these - not exactly ‘electronic’ - but more in the form of Abram’s machine, that works from the atomic theory.

“He is also going to seek out some minerals of special nature and character. He is to drive through and he wants someone near his age to be his companion. Of course, I am sure that he will take care of all the expenses. Whether he expects to contribute anything else, that I don’t know. You can make your own arrangements; but I am in hopes that it meets with your approval to do this, or that at least it will give you an opportunity to have a real experience, making a wonderful association, and I believe a friendship that may mean a very great deal to you.

“I am in hopes that it will suit your mother, and yourself also. His car is a new Pontiac, radio and everything, and you will find him a very, very lovely person - not uppish at all - but a regular fellow. He and his mother have been here for the last two or three days and they leave today. I don’t think he expects to go to Arizona before some time in February.”

R9. 3/26/34 [440]‘s ltr. to EC on [Seventy Six Ranch Bonita, Arizona] stationary: “I hope that you are well and happy and that you found the family in as equally as good spirits. Was the trip comfortable? Did you stop and visit anyone? How does Virginia Beach look after visiting the land of the ‘wide open spaces’?

“Mr. Webb and I returned safely to the ranch although the old fellow went to sleep on me for the last hour of the trip. A passing Chevrolet Sedan near the place where we saw that marvelous mirage nearly put a rock through the windshield. Had it not been shatter-proof it would have broken into a thousand pieces, as it was, it only cracked it.

“Upon returning here I found that I was feeling awful and not until today do I again feel like a human being. Something must be taking place inside, or else that high-ball in Mexico was poison. Were you upset? I hope not. I have washed the stone carefully and put it into a handkerchief washed with equal care. Last night, I think for the first time I began to hear it. It is curious, it sounded as though it was talking but I was unable to form any words from what I heard, and then do not yet feel certain that it is not just my imagination. I am going up tomorrow to see the collection which Mr. Webb’s brother has.

“Last night in browsing through some of the readings, I came upon an answer which has puzzled me. Perhaps it would be best to tell you where you will find it than try to write it out, as it is a long one, and the question before seems to indicate the desirability of experimenting with plants before treating people or do you think it simply refers to establishing the vibration of highest resistance with the cactus. The two questions of which I speak are numbers [32-Q, & 33-Q] in a reading given me on the 9th of January at the Beach. [440-11]

“If it is too much trouble to find the questions or you have not enough time to write, do not bother for while the questions are of interest, they are not of paramount importance.

“Good luck to you, my friend. May God bless you in your work and bring the day soon, through me if He so chooses, when you may be restored in health and body and find that for which you seek. My best to your family and others whom you know, Affectionately, [440].”

R10. 3/30/34 “How are you, my friend? I have not as yet heard how you fared on the way home but am looking forward to a letter from you in the near future.

“The instrument is still a puzzle but I shall conquer yet, for I do not believe that it is fair to pass judgment until I know that I am 100% physically, which I am rapidly approaching. Then if I cannot get 23 to ‘ring the bell,’ there will be good reason to retrace and - find out where the trouble is.

“The vibrations in the stone are becoming stronger every day but as yet I am unable to hear them. They feel much like the Radio-Active battery when I touch the stone.

“Just had a letter from [267] saying she wasn’t well. Would you do me a favor for which I shall never cease thanking you and give her a health rdg.? You know what she means to the future of our work and more. Ask her for her questions and tell her it is all arranged for between you and me. Tell her I insist she have it, for in her eternal selflessness she may want it for one of the children instead. You might also ask if the hydronol or the instrument did any good. Will you do this for me? I have tried to help her but it is you who really can. Good luck and bless you and Easter greetings to you and all your family. Your indebted friend,” [440]

R11. 4/3/34 EC’s letter: “Dear [440]: I suspect that long before this you have come to the conclusion that I must be a very unappreciative individual, not to have said anything to you thus far since leaving Arizona. However, I want to assure you such has not been the case. As I had the opportunity in getting on the train as I did to stop at several places along the way, I did so, as I told you I might. In Birmingham I found quite a group, and also in Montgomery. So, I have been ten days or more getting to the Beach. Consequently, I have been kept so busy that I haven’t even had time to write a card, for there were so many funny things happening that would be hard to explain - or believe, almost - that I didn’t dare try and tell you about them on postcards, and I didn’t have a chance to write any other way - as I was in someone’s home all the time when not on the train. But I’ll try to review just a bit of it for you, and then you’ll know it’s either just another tale or a peculiar circumstance that arose during this trip.

“When I left you at Douglas there was a young lady sitting in the seat just opposite me, not more than nineteen or twenty years old - and, of course, I felt she was most too young for me to flirt with (though she cast many glances in my direction, I’ll have to admit, and I’m not bragging about that, of course.) Just before we got to El Paso she asked me if she had not seen me in Bisbee the day before; said she thought she saw me with two other men and the mining engineer of the copper mine there. So I told her she was correct. Then she told me she was the daughter of the operating engineer in the mine. I asked her about the azurite and she told me if we really wanted other samples she was very sure that if there was such a thing to be had at all, she would be very glad to get it for us. Her name is Miss Olmsted; whether it’s Agnes, Annie or what, I don’t know, but should you decide you want other samples I would advise the NEXT time you go to Bisbee that you get in touch with the operating engineer (from what she said about the abilities to get the samples or anything that may be had in that mine.) What do you think of that for coincidence? And I might have had a whole afternoon conversation about it, had I not been trying to not appear too forward or what shall I call it. She apparently knows considerable of the history of azurite that we haven’t ever had suggested to us. It may be rather in keeping with some of the things our friend Mrs. Dougherty [Myrtle B. Dougherty (Mrs. Fred H.) of El Paso, Texas, spiritualist medium who did voluminous automatic writing.] sent me here. You know we failed to give her our address in Arizona. I’m also enclosing the message she sent to you here. Miss Gladys has typed it so it’ll be easier for you to read.

“Another funny thing - that night when we left El Paso I met the commander of the Texas Rangers, who was going to Houston. Apparently he knows Mr. Webb very well; he’s about Mr. Webb’s age; said he knew him around Tombstone. His name is Bauer (Bear, he calls it). The next morning I met a Mr. Dibble from Los Angeles, with whom Mr. and Mrs. Webb visited possibly during the time they were out of the Ranch, that Mr. Webb told us about. Of course, I heard the whole story again, but from an outsider’s viewpoint, much as Mr. Webb told you and me on the trip to Douglas. He also told me of their associations and reviewed for me, as did Mr. Webb for you and me, the Easter experience when Madam Alder sang. Quite a lovely man, and a remarkable thing was that we were talking about families (he thought my name was unusual) and apparently his forefathers and my mother’s forefathers were very good friends, as the Dibble estate and the Major Castle in England were adjoining; and he told me a great deal about England and my mother’s forefathers there that was quite interesting and illuminating to me. He insists he would like to have me visit him in Los Angeles and promises that upon his return from England this year he will come by Virginia Beach to carry me to Los Angeles with him.

“Later on the same train I met the physician at Willcox, Dr. B. E. Briscoe. Of course, he is well acquainted with all the people at the Ranch, having given treatments to Mr. and Mrs. Johnson and several times has helped out our good friend Smith. (Had he sobered up when you got back to the Ranch?) I talked with Briscoe about the Work, and whether it was curiosity or he gave any credence to it, I don’t know - but he is a very good listener. I found that he is a relative of a very good friend of my family in Kentucky.

“All in all, it was a very interesting trip all the way from Douglas to New Orleans. Consequently, when I left New Orleans the next morning and found I could stop over, I wired some of my friends in Montgomery and arrived there Saturday afternoon. We have quite a number of Association members there whom I had not met. We had a lovely meeting Sunday afternoon, quite a large group met at one of the hotels when they asked me to talk to them. We will possibly have quite another bunch of members from there in the near future. The next day I went on to Birmingham. We have an organized group there. Some members met me and I was with some of them practically every minute of the time until I left on Thursday. Next I stopped at Nashville where I have three sisters living, and as I was so close to Hopkinsville where my wife’s people live I ran over there for one afternoon and night; then came on home, arriving here Easter Sunday night. So, I was away from the Beach the entire month of March, due entirely - of course - to your good graces and good wishes. I hope I don’t have to say thank you for the kindness, courtesy and favor shown me at all times, but I want you to know that I appreciate it and I am hoping it has been worth while to you for giving so much time, thought and money to such a visit for me.

“I found all very well here, and considerable amount of work on hand which will require possibly ten days or more for me to get straightened out. As yet I haven’t seen the [317]‘s, I understand they have been getting along very well, and the folks here have been meeting with them every week since we left.

“The weather has been beautiful since I got back, but I understand it was very severe and disagreeable practically all the month of March.

“I am feeling pretty good. I’m glad that you had a good trip back. It was quite a narrow escape for you that your windshield was broken but it was certainly a godsend that you had shatter-proof glass and there were no bad effects. I’m sure you enjoyed your drive back with Mr. Webb, even if he did go to sleep on you. He is certainly quite an interesting man, and until I crossed the Mississippi River, wherever his name was mentioned in any group or to any individual he was spoken most highly of. Evidently he is quite an influential and well-thought of man in the West.

“I’m getting back to work now as soon as possible. It’ll take me a few days to sort of adjust myself. I don’t know that I feel regenerated physically, but I do believe I am in my mental and spiritual self. I believe I have a hold on myself sufficient to last for quite a while, especially if I can stay very close to the Throne of Grace which, through His mercies, I hope to do.

“I enjoyed every minute of the time I was with you, [440], and most of all I enjoyed our little discussions and readings of the Bible in the evening. I’m sure if you stick very close to that you will be very close to the right way.

“I do hope you are finding the correct relationships with the machine. You realize you’ll have to be very sincere with yourself but very consistent and persistent with the attempts to attune your inner self to the cosmic energies that may make themselves manifest through such a machine. It will not be easy at all, for if it is easy then it indeed is much more dangerous - if it has the abilities to do what we are led to believe can be done through it, and what no doubt you are convinced in your own mind it can do from the evidence you have seen with your work here.

“Just yet I haven’t been able to look up the reading you refer to, but when I get to that - in the rest of my letter- writing - I will do so and give you my interpretation of the information given there. [See Par. R12, below.]

“I’m sure you have your hands full as for work, but hope you are finding time to keep the girls away and your mind on what you are trying to do.

“Be sure and let me hear from you. Know that if I can in any way be of assistance or even if you would suspect that I might be of help, you only have to let me know.

R12. 4/9/34 EC’s letter, advising that he has just given rdg. 267-2:

“Now, about the reading of Jan. 9th. Answer [Par. 32-A, 440-11], of course, refers only to the coils in the machine and to the use of same on plant life. So, as I understand, would not have anything to do with the present machine, unless it is the attempt on your part to get the vibration of certain plant life as related to 23, or the perfect body; and you will be able to tell whether it adds to or takes from.

“As for locating the azurite with your present machine, as indicated, apparently the use of the azurite would better set YOU to be able to locate it sometime afterwards than in anything else. So, I think the main thing at present is first to satisfy yourself as to the vibrations from 23, as related to your working with the machine. I believe the last information outlined the proper way for you to do this. [See 440-16?] As I suggested while there and in my last letter, I know you realize it must be a very slow but sure and definite thing. Patience and persistence is what you need to practice in your own make-up, and should enable you not only to do something for yourself but to be of greater service to others.”

R13. 4/4/34 [440]‘s letter to EC: “Before your departure, you expressed the desire for a pair of rabbit’s ears which I told you I should try to procure for you. True to my promise, you will find them enclosed. I did not use the gun at all during Holy Week for I went through a little time of purification with myself in preparation for Easter morning. Yesterday, however, I started out and the first three shots brought down two rabbits, the ears of the first of which I enclose. It was a cotton tail, the other being a jack with huge thick ears which I did not think you would like especially as they were full of wood ticks.

“The people here are all becoming interested in your work and I believe Mrs. Hefflefinger will soon be writing in for a life reading [no rdg.] as she has expressed the intention of doing so. I have tried to tell them about it to the best of my humble ability and kindle their interest. Mrs. Webb [no rdg.] received the pamphlets which you sent and everyone has been studying them with interest. For myself, I am at a loss to know what to think. I rose early Easter morning and went up into a high hill and prayed and waited for the sunrise. I made so to speak ‘my skirts clean’ with the Father. I know that my life will be an unhappy one if it is not dedicated to some lofty purpose. In my own heart I believe that at-onement with the Creative Forces, which precludes absolute selflessness and the willingness to reflect here on earth their workings from above, in order to maintain that at-onement, is the highest ideal I know and is, from my point of view, the fulfillment of life on earth. As I sat and thought the ideal became clearer and I began to see the different pitfalls of which one must be careful but beyond that nothing happened. All these thoughts I had had before and amounted simply to the clarification of things I already was aware of and cannot therefore be called in any sense a psychic experience.

“I do not feel it was in vain. One never enters into prayer and meditation in vain but the reading promised a psychic experience which never occurred, though I remained on the mountain till the sun was high in the sky. Perhaps I am overly anxious but I long to establish that contact with the infinite and have longed for it since a boy. I had thought that perhaps the readings had indicated a way. I followed them as closely as I was able but the result, at least to date, has been failure.

“I have been disappointed on two other scores also, for as yet, I have not heard the stone sing or talk nor have I obtained any responses from the instrument though I sit for half an hour a day and rub until my arm goes numb on me. The stone however seems to give off vibrations and as I lie in the sun with it on my chest I seem to feel better. This is an experiment I tried and seems to indicate the stone has healing qualities.

“Oh, Mr. Cayce, you are probably angry with me for my inability to fulfill anything the readings have indicated but believe me I have sincerely tried and shall continue to. When things do not work it is no time to quit and because of a few discouragements it is no time to say ‘it is all a mistake.’ I want to believe in the readings. I feel that there are great possibilities for the future, for a new and enlightened generation and I will NOT give up the ship for the ideal has its foundation on rock though the material realizations fall short of completion time and again.

“Please give my kindest regards to your family and if you feel the present difficulties warrant a reading I should greatly appreciate it, otherwise I shall continue as before. Perhaps I must find my own health first, and thus raise my vibration so that I then have the ability to perceive these things, though I know of plenty of mediums who perceive those on another plane and feel things out of our ordinary range of perception who are not necessarily healthy. The pain in my right side, though still present, is decreasing in intensity and in spite of failures otherwise my health continues to improve for which I am deeply grateful. Health is the first essential. We can accomplish little without it, so I do feel I am doing the first thing first and perhaps should go more slowly with the other things, taking ‘one step at a time’ as the readings have said.

R14. 4/10/34 EC’s letter to [440]: “I have yours of the 4th, and don’t know whether I am just fitted to answer this or not - but will do my best.

“Many thanks for the rabbit ears.

“As I said in my last letter, Gertrude’s mother was very ill and she and Hugh Lynn had started to Hopkinsville in the car, but did not reach there in time. Her mother died early Sunday morning.

“I am sure you will be able to present whatever may be your personal opinion and experience about the Work to those interested there, in the manner they should have it at the time.

“No doubt it was a wonderful experience for you on Easter morning. That you were somewhat disappointed, or possibly wholly so, and feel that the information is incorrect in saying you would have an experience, I am sure is true. But I’m wondering, [440], if you haven’t misinterpreted it all. Not that I am trying to insist that you believe in the information that may come through this channel at all; I would never do that, if I know myself, unless one’s experience justified it. But isn’t it a fact (now analyze yourself a bit) that you have pre-conceived ideas as to what should happen to you an an experience? or haven’t you already some idea as to what should take place in your body? Either you have builded this from what you have heard others say as to their experience under such and such conditions, or from what you have read. And the experience must be yours! You must be aware of it. That you don’t have it according to your idea, is it any proof to you that it doesn’t happen to others - or that it really hasn’t happened to you, but you have not become aware of it as yet? And I think the same thing is true respecting the vibrations you should be able to become aware of in the machine. Do these things come so easily that you have no price to pay for them (through your inner self; not in outward things)? Isn’t that what is required by all? Or have you some other idea? The promise is there for every one; not because the reading has said so. It has been the experience of every one throughout the ages who has consecrated his life to the service of his fellow man in the name of the living God. Each one has his own individual experience. It may not come at the time or the place or the way you expect it; and you may be as some others I know, ‘If I can’t have it when I want it, then I don’t want it!’ Well, do you deserve it - if you really have that attitude? What do you suppose must have been Moses’ attitude when he had prepared himself with the most profound education it was possible for an individual to have at the period, and then found he was rejected - and instead of being a leader of his people he went out to lead the poor dumb sheep! [Ex. 3:1] And he stayed there forty years! Don’t you reckon he had just about given up when the call finally came? for he began to make excuses [Ex. 4:10], yet he knew the promise had been to his people from Abraham’s time that they would possess the land and that there would be raised up a leader. Yet he was ready to put it off on someone else. [Ex. 4:14]

Another could have the experience but he couldn’t. The same way with Gideon when he was ready to consecrate and dedicate his life to a service; ‘Why, that thing can’t be possible!’ [Judges 6:15 and Judges 6:13—15] It’s the experience of us all, [440]; every one that’s worth while. There are some that want to tell God what sort of experience they want, just what sort of job they want, just what character of person they want to serve, just what line of work they want to do. Is that right? Could you persuade yourself, really, that it is the right way? The information, though it may not be worth a cuss to you, has been worth while to others. Of course, I know you are an exceptional fellow, but I hope you are not so exceptional that you won’t take advice from something that HAS been really helpful to others. And if it’s been to others it can be to you - if you will take it in the way that the Higher Forces or Sources may direct.

“So, I hope you won’t lose patience with yourself. Know what you want and pray it through! That’s the only way you can do it. Keep on praying, and LIVE every day JUST like you pray!

“The stone stopped singing? In your letter sometime ago you said you could hear it - the vibrations in it. I think you may be trying to use it for something that you can SEE, what it will do, rather than listening at what is well for you to do. If it has taken emanations from the cosmic or universal forces, then you may be able to listen and hear - even through that channel - what may come to you. If you are trying to see what it will do to you, you may be disappointed all the way round.

“Don’t think I am angry with you at all, nor that I am even disappointed in you - as yet. I’m only wondering if you have as much stability as the postage stamp, to stick to a thing until you get there. And you don’t have to fool yourself!

“I would not take anything in the world for some of the experiences I had while with you on the trip. Possibly I’ve enlarged upon them and dreamed of them in my own imagination until I have made them beautiful, possibly more so than they were at that time; but I’m more and more persuaded that what we build in our own imaginations, in our own mental abilities, is much more real than oceans that happen day by day. It at least will stay with us longer, and we can live with it much better than we can some of the things that happen from day to day externally. And life and living is a continuous thing. If we don’t put it together and build it from such concepts of spiritual things, the results will not be very beautiful or easy to live with.

“You are so DEFINITE as to some things and so INDEFINITE as to others, [440]. What is truth to you? What is your definition of it? From whence has truth its abilities to evaluate in the experience of individuals? “That you should find your health is fine, yet I’m very sure that in finding that which will produce health in any animated body you are dealing with the very life essence itself. If you find healing and don’t know where you got it, nor where it came from, nor what to do with it, what’s the use of having it! You have the most wonderful opportunity before you of any individual I’ve ever seen or known. But DON’T stumble over it, for goodness’ sake!

“I don’t know that a reading right at present would help. Possibly after another experience or so, you might be able to get a few questions together. Know this - you may be very sure of it - if it is at all possible for me to use whatever abilities may have been given to me as an aid to you, in the service that I’m sure you CAN render the people at this time, may God grant that I may never lose the opportunity! But if I’m going to cause you to stumble and to doubt, and produce in you any form of disturbance that makes for your questioning the very sources of Life itself because you are confused with what you want and how you want it, God forbid that anything ever be given to you through these channels! It’s not an imposition on me, ever, for anyone that is SINCERELY seeking help. But if the information confuses or disturbs that which an individual has found is satisfying to him, the Lord forbid that I ever disturb such a soul! No matter what it may be building; if he is satisfied, I want him to stay satisfied, but I know if he is satisfied he has already begun to fail. What we want is contentment and harmony, that comes only from the listening to the voice from within.

Mr. [317] came by to get Mrs. [267]‘s reading and I spoke to him then; otherwise I haven’t seen them. As soon as possible we will get reading for [559]. [See 559-6.] I had quite a conversation with her the afternoon of her mother’s reading; [267-2] she told me she had sent many letters and kisses to you, was anxious to hear from you and to see you again. I do hope we may find something that will be helpful.

“This may be of interest. I met a man in … [Ala.], in the insurance business, who had a Life Reading about a year ago. [See 284-1] He tells me that the information in that reading has been the most valuable he has ever had in his life. This seems to be worth while. Am I fooling myself, [440]?”

R15. 4/12/34 Card thanking EC for 267-2: “If you have a rdg. for me, ask what the response should be, whether a sound, a vibration in the finger [through the instrument] as if an electric current were passed through it or what. Ask if there is anything I can put on the bakelite sounding board to make the response uniform or to increase it. I still cannot tell the difference between 23 or any other number. Best wishes, [440].”

R16. 4/12/34 letter from [440] to EC: “Your good letter and [267]‘s physical diagnosis [267-2] arrived two days ago. I appreciate your interest in this matter and, in order to be sure that she has the treatments, am enclosing a check for forty-eight dollars for Dr. Crews [Gena L. Crews, D.O.] which at $2 a treatment will be good for ten weeks, if they are taken as outlined in the reading.

“I was sorry to hear about Mrs. Cayce’s mother, but she is in a particularly fortunate position to appreciate the greater happiness that lies in wait for her parent should that one’s physical body now fail her. I await the day when all the world may realize the truth of death and only hope that Mrs. Cayce’s loss, in any temporary separation that may be brought about, will not cause her unhappiness.

“Your advice is sound. I must cultivate patience and persistence and I appreciate your calling my attention to these two most valuable attributes. If you will allow me I am going to take this opportunity to try to tell you my creed. It will turn this letter into more of a thesis than a letter but with your kind permission I shall attempt it, nevertheless. This is not intended as a defense of my shortcomings, but I hope will create a better understanding between us. I feel that it can be the only basis for a true friendship. I have given much time and deep thought to studying your philosophy, for I have thought it worthy of such. Fundamentally, I think that we are in accord, but in working out mine I have discarded many dead branches, as they seemed to me, from the the tree of truth and among them the Bible with the exception of a few brief passages of the new testament. This may come as a shock to you but please try to follow me as I think I have been absolutely fair and honest in my conclusions.

“It has been my good fortune to discover a book which so perfectly expresses and supports my conclusions and so nearly follows my logic that the best way to help you understand my creed is to first recommend to you ‘The Rock of Truth’ by J. Arthur Findlay, printed by Rider & Co., London in 1933. Please, if you have not already read this book, do so. It is an absolutely sincere, fair, honest treatise on the Christian Church and the Bible. Many of the facts stated I have learned from Orthodox ministers long ago who, in spite of them, continue to preach that the Bible is the word of God. I think you will find everything within this book relating to Christianity to be true and the conclusions expressed to be the result of an honest, reasonable and scholarly approach to the study of the subject. It is, furthermore, a thoroughly constructive document, for it tears down the tradition and superstition of the past only to build a new religious philosophy on a much sounder basis which will be, I believe, the answer for the new age.

“A glorious opportunity lies ahead of us to blaze a trail for future generations on such a basis. Are we going to approach that trail laden with the dogmas and beliefs of a dead or rapidly dying religion? I for one do not wish to. I believe that Jesus lived, born of parents as you and I, and died I care not how, for it is how he lived, not how he died, that concerns me. If I based my belief in the life hereafter upon his resurrection, I should feel myself on very shaky ground. His teaching was beautiful, one showing a deep insight into the nature of life or God, and is similar to most other doctrines of his day, reflecting well the best of the thought and philosophy of his age. If we call him the Christ, then we must call Buddha, Mohammed, Plato, Marcus Aurelius and all those who attained a greater understanding of the Christ spirit than other men of their day, the Christ. Yes, I believe in the Christ spirit, it is the spirit of Truth and of Life. If we identify Jesus with it in our own minds we will do so in our visions. Buddhists identify Buddha with it in theirs. Are there seven centers of the White Brotherhood? Why not? They exist to promulgate the Christ spirit on earth. If they can only approach a person through the form of Jesus because of that person’s limited views, they must do so, for they seek to promote growth and all growth is slow and in order with as few sudden shiftings of the sands as possible.

“I recently came across a little pamphlet which sums up in a remarkably clear manner what I believe Jesus tried to teach as well as what most other teachers have taught. I shall send for a few and mail one to you. I believe that in addition to the phase of his teaching so thoroughly covered by this pamphlet he had a knowledge of and was in constant touch with those of the etheric world even as Findlay states in his book.

“Then what of the second coming of Christ, you ask me. The second coming, I believe, will be in the hearts of men rather than in the form of any one individual, and it seems more reasonable to me to believe that His first coming was in the early days of Atlantis and in the hearts of all seekers after Truth ever since. As Atlantis, however, still remains a myth, it must be excluded, for the present, from the argument. In that glorious day when the Christ Spirit is truly born in the hearts of men there will be some, quite naturally, who are more perfect expressions of it than others. We stand today on the edge of this new age, we have the opportunity to be among the pioneers. Personally, it seems more reasonable and I would far rather believe that the Christ spirit is something to be attained by all men and that the purpose of our work is to help bring that about rather than to prepare the way for the return of God’s supposed One Son. That Jesus may reappear is not beyond belief, that he will reappear full grown is not beyond belief, but here is how it will happen. Science will advance to a point where, if an etheric entity is willing to cooperate, they may again produce a material body around it that will be visible to all. This of course is done in science momentarily and eventually our knowledge should reach a point where the results of such an experiment may produce more lasting results. Jesus is perhaps awaiting that very opportunity for, poor man, he has probably watched and sorrowed since the advent of Christianity at the collosal barbarions, the untold misery, that the belief in his supposed teachings has brought about. Christianity may also be pointed out as having brought comfort to many. I admit it, any other faith would have done the same thing. It cannot be said, however, to have produced understanding. Men like Galileo, Newton, Darwin, etc., who have cast aside the doctrines of the Church and ventured forth to discover the secret of Nature guided by the light of reason have done that. They had to labor for centuries to again attain the knowledge that was common fact before the birth of Jesus and which Jesus must have known but which the superstition and ignorance of the early Church Fathers put an end to. Findlay, however, has expressed all this far better than I am able and I beg you to read his book if you can to understand what I am trying to say.

“If you do not agree with my argument, you should familiarize yourself with it, for I believe it is the argument of most of the thinking members of my generation. You should be prepared to refute it in the light of reason, for we are tired of doctrines and creeds and we long for the Truth, and the truth above all must, of itself, be reasonable, for God is mind.

“Do not think, however, my friend, that because we may disagree in our theories, my affection for you is any the less. I am not a reformer, I am not trying to force this theory on anyone, I AM willing, on the other hand, to share it with anyone and if it is the Truth, it will live long after I am gone. If it is not, it will die its natural death and I hope, at an early date. My only purpose in talking to you this way is to have you understand me even as I have tried to understand you.

“What are my beliefs, then, you ask? I shall try to sum them up in ten brief statements.

“1. I believe that I AM.

“2. I believe that the universe consists of mind, matter and energy, and that every phenomena can be explained in terms of

• and is an expression of - this great trinity, that this trinity exists everywhere and that its components are inseparable.

“3. I believe that I am a focal point of matter and energy (or matter-energy which may also be called electricity) and possess a free will which controls this focal point of matter-energy and is master of its destiny.

“4. I believe that in as much as I consist of matter-energy, so do I consist of Cosmic mind and that the purpose of my being in the present state of evolution is to attain and maintain the consciousness of identity with the Cosmic Mind.

“5. I believe that the result of the attainment will be peace and happiness, that love and faith are the two primary qualifications necessary to such an attainment, love of Life in its entirety (for love produces harmony and as indicated the purpose of life is to be in harmony with Life), and faith in Life’s capacity to care for the least of its little ones. (This is not faith in its ordinary sense for, as I am a part of Life, it means faith in myself) I do not believe in the value of faith in anything that comes to us thru the five senses, including religions. To doubt intelligently is the key to understanding in this realm.

“6. I believe that the only destructive forces, or forces that delay our evolution, are fear and ignorance, resulting inevitably in all the destructive desires such as hate, greed, envy, etc., that what we see as material destruction is nothing but a transition and that, in reality, nothing can be destroyed, destruction, so called, being the secret of evolution.

“7. I believe, therefore, that love and understanding are the necessary prerequisites to the fulfillment of life, and that they come as the result of love and faith. I believe that understanding is born of a love of Life which implies faith in Life, its language being the intuition, and of reason, its language being the intellect.

“8. I believe that the Cosmic Mind in expression works according to law and order and that the purpose of all science is to discover the Truth of that order.

“With these beliefs I shall commence my life. They may in time be altered slightly, even materially, and added unto, but for a start this philosophy is the only one I can honestly admit.

“Perhaps, that ingenious inventor of the steam engine, James Watts, hit upon the characteristic in mankind that has made the existence of Christianity possible when he said upon noting the violent opposition that he met with in trying to lessen ‘the sound and fury signifying nothing’ of his early pumping engines.

“At present the velocity, violence, magnitude and horrible noise of the engine give universal satisfaction to all beholders, believers or not. I have once or twice trimmed the engine to end its stroke gently, and make less noise; but Mr. […] cannot sleep unless it seem quite furious, so I have left it to the engine-man. And, by the bye, the noise serves to convey great ideas of the power to the ignorant, who seem to be no more taken with modest merit in an engine than in a man.

“9. I believe that through the five material senses we may perceive but a limited portion of the universe and so our intellectual understanding is similarly limited, the intellect being said to be finite, the universe infinite.

“10. I believe that there are those in higher as well as lower states of evolution than ourselves, that evolution is the law of life and that we only see its reflection in materiality.

“This I found in a recent copy of ‘Travel.’ It illustrates the point beautifully. You will notice, moreover, that as an understanding of engines has brought about the desire for SILENT power, so an understanding of Life will bring about the desire for a religion without miracles, for in the greater understanding will come the realization that there are no such things as miracles.

“For my part I only see it as a waste of time and energy to seek to compromise what I believe as True with the teachings of the Christian Church either within myself or in public. Future generations will not compromise and, though the growth of the present generation will begin with a compromise in its evolution toward a new and greater understanding, I see no reason to limit myself in compromise, just to be one of the crowd, when the future and the truth stand staring me in the face. Again let me interest you to read ‘The Rock of Truth’ that you may know what I am talking about, for I have here assumed many things that are carefully explained in that scholarly volume. I do not intend by this letter to defend Mr. Findlay’s approach to Spiritualism. In fact, it seems rather elementary, but I believe has been made so that the public might more easily believe. It is his honest exposure of the origin of Christianity to which I refer in particular.

“If you feel the [317]‘s would be interested in this letter, you are more than welcome to discuss it with them; in fact, I hope that you will. I shall enjoy immensely hearing how you all feel about it, for if I am wrong stop me now and explain where I have ‘missed fire.’ Prove my error and I shall be the first to admit it. Do not misunderstand me! We shall have a great center in Virginia Beach, one built as a glory to God, in the light of Truth, but we must pull together and perhaps on this stroke I have dipped my paddle in a little ahead of the rest of the crew. At any rate, what I have tried to say here is not a sudden change or a sudden discovery on my part but the result of deep and sincere thought over a period of years. I have hesitated until now to take a stand with you for I felt that perhaps you knew a better way and I would examine it and that until I had done so I had no right to speak. I have tried to be fair in every way but, in seeking solitude, I find that the inner voice is ever guiding me further along the same path which I put my foot to years ago. I owe to you a real increase in understanding, let me never forget it. The future should hold more for us both, but let us understand each other and work together or know now that we seek different goals.

“Forgive me if my outspoken words have offended you. I have only sought to establish a better understanding between us and shall hold my peace henceforth.

“May God bless you with the light of His spirit that you may enlighten many, and judge fairly the value of that which he has led me to believe.

“P.S. Should you be interested in giving a reading on this letter, do not hesitate; as my whole life lies wrapped up in these pages, and it may prove of great value, but read the book first, please. You may save the letter to file with the reading should you give me one, and should you wish to do so. I have written it in all sincerity and I know this matter will receive your sincere consideration.

“I wrote this letter yesterday and it is of interest that last night in a dream I saw a huge green book and printed on the outside in black letters of gold was THE CHRIST KRISHNAMURTI and some more, which I do not remember, so you see the Christ appears in many forms and in my dream seemed to assume the form of my friend and teacher [Jiddu Krishnamurti] to whom I owe much for the help he has given me in beginning the run of this earthly life with a sound and practical philosophy.”

R17. 4/24/34 EC’s letter: “I have yours of the 14th. And while I possibly should not attempt to answer you until I have had the opportunity to read Findlay’s book, inasmuch as I am not conscious that I have any particular philosophy perhaps I can answer just as well without Mr. Findlay as I can with him, as for the reasons of the faith that is within me.

“First of all, I received the check and immediately went to see Dr. Crews. I found there was very much more of a turmoil between the Doctor and the family than I had first supposed. I don’t know why I had felt I might be the mediator, unless it was that Dr. Crews had been at our hospital and I had been able to reason with her about some specific cases she had to take care of. Yesterday afternoon I talked also a little while with Mrs. [267], and I suppose she will go to see Dr. Crews today or tomorrow. Anyway, I think it is a something that will be good for all concerned. I didn’t want to be a meddler, but only did I offer myself to be drawn into a breach that possibly might be a help to everybody; less expensive to you, possibly the very thing Mrs. [267] needs, and possibly I’ll be able to get Mr. [317] to see where he has erred (according to Dr. Crews’ viewpoint) and also the Doctor - and I suspect she needs the work just as bad as Mrs. [267] needs the treatment. So, all in all, I am hoping that everything will work out most satisfactorily.

“Now, for the rest of your letter: I wish that I might talk with you, for I am aware that often we are not able to put into words on paper that we really desire to pass on to our fellow men. Of course, I know that I am not such a good writer of letters. I realize that according to the standards of a great many I have not had the advantages of an education; neither am I able to express myself in words or to phrase my sentences in such a way as to be understood at all times. However, I am not aware that I have a creed. Neither am I aware that I have a philosophy. And if you have been able, from your observation of and talks with me, to know what my philosophy is, you would do me a real favor to point it out to me. And then I will be better able to tell you as to whether that is my idea or ideal or not. Of this I am sure: TRUTH is a growing thing, and what may be truth to me today may not be truth tomorrow at all. I don’t call that a philosophy. Possibly it is. Possibly it’s my lack of comprehension to know what philosophy really is. I do know I am not orthodox. Of course, I don’t know Mr. Findlay’s approach to the subject of tearing down the traditions and superstitions presented by Christianity and the Bible; which has been the basis for most of our wars, most of our contentions, and most of our faultfindings with others - and still has been the basis for most of that people call civilization. Many a man with a little learning, I’m sure, becomes too large for his breeches. And the same old thing said to one of the speakers who defended the Christ, ‘Much learning doth make thee mad.’ [Acts. 26:24]

“I believe that the Christ HAS lived in the lives of possibly all those you refer to. Surely they were moved by the spirit of the Son of God, if their constructive work pointed to the ONE God. I believe, too, the Christ Spirit is the Spirit of Truth; consequently truth grows in the consciousness of individuals AS they are capable of applying it in their lives. Possibly, had I had the advantage of knowing what Buddha, Mohammed, Plato or any of the rest have taught, I might be just as willing to accept that as I do the Jewish Bible that we have. I don’t accept it without question. Honest seeking, I believe, should be the privilege and the right of every man. I believe that is what the man Jesus taught. Jesus as a man and Jesus as the Christ, to me, are two quite different things. I do believe in the immaculate conception, and I have my personal reasons for it. As to whether that is a fact or not, to me, does not make a great deal of difference; and I do not find fault with any man who does not want to accept it. But so do I believe Buddha was not conceived in the ordinary manner, nor Melchizedek. I know little or nothing about science. I have little idea even of what science really PROFESSES or portends or REALLY believes. But I am persuaded, by those that I have heard speak who call themselves scientists, that no two of them believe the same thing. That all the teachers in the world have been necessary for its development, I believe is true. Evolution of the soul, I believe; of spieces, no.

“Now, whether this is stating things as a philosophy or not, I do not know. I am glad, though, that you have written me as you have, [440]. There should be a perfect understanding between us at all times. There really is between friends. As you say, possibly Christianity has never made anyone understand anything and science does - but I don’t believe that. Science and religion (mind you, I don’t say Christianity) should be one and the same thing, if I understand correctly what we see about us day by day. We are all much like the old Hindu story of the six blind men that went to see the elephant. [‘T’was six men of Indostan’ etc., by John Godfrey Saxe.] You know the rest of the story. They all saw him, as we all may see a manifestation of God in the earth; we each have our approach to Him. Most of us shut our eyes to those things that we see about us day by day. As to whether there have been miracles or not depends, of course, upon the approach and as to what constitutes a miracle. If a miracle is something that is unnatural, then there are no miracles. If a miracle is something that I do not understand the law that has brought it about, then to me there ARE miracles; while to you the same might not be miracles. But as one of the sages has said: ‘There be three things which are too wonderful for me, yea, four which I know not: The way of an eagle in the air; the way of a serpent upon a rock; the way of a ship in the midst of the sea; and the way of a man with a maid.’ [Pr. 30:18—23] And, as he also said, ‘There be three things which disquieteth the earth: A servant when he denieth his master; a fool when he is filled with meat; and an odious woman when she is married.’ That the Christ Spirit giveth understanding to these things I believe is true. For, while they may be out of the realm of our reasoning, if we accept some of those things that possibly have been retained by you in the rejection of the Holy Book, they possibly explain them. I don’t know just what you have retained. But I believe the whole gospel of the Christ, or the man Jesus - which is the gospel of the Christ all the way through, is: ‘Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine mind, thine soul and thine body, and thy neighbor as thyself.’ [Mat. 22:37-39] THAT is my philosophy, if I have one. All that has been added to that has been the attempt of an individual to explain away, or explain, just what is comprised in those few words.

“My views perhaps are limited. They are limited to my own experience and observation. I know I cannot tell anyone how even to pray, how to meditate. I can only say what has been my experience, and the individual soul being a portion of the Whole - yet individual - may gain his own comprehension by applying same in his experience.

“If I get the right idea from your letter, and from what Mrs. [267] said yesterday, I am to show she and Mr. [317] your letter - which I am doing. I appreciate your intention to send each of us a copy of Findlay’s book, as well as the pamphlets. I would appreciate them very much, and I assure you they will be read with an open mind, a seeking heart, with the desire to read that which is truth in them and let it persuade me to be a better channel and a greater blessing to my fellow man. I believe that our service here on earth is to our fellow man. And it is not so much self-development as it is selflessness - and being willing to be guided by the spirit of God as it is revealed to us in the Christ, whether presented by Mohammed, Jesus, Buddha, Zoroaster, Moses, Joshua, David, [440] or Edgar Cayce. The Spirit is One! That which it acts upon is very different, for those souls acted upon are individual entities; not bodies that are made with hands, but bodies that were created by that same force or power that has brought the worlds into being - call it whatever we will or may - that they might be companions with that force or power which brought them into being.

“The second coming? I don’t know who, where or what ever got the idea that it was a second coming. It may be the forty- fifth so far as I know, of an individual or personal Christ. As to whether He will come in this, that or the other way is dependent upon how well those that are looking for His coming manifest that spirit in their relationships to their fellow man. For, still does the law apply that ‘Like begets like.’ [Gen. 1:12, 24, 26.] Whether it will come through a body, I know not. Whether it will come full-grown or be built up, I know not. And if it is a scientist that has built it up, it will be because the scientist has done and does do the will of the Creator in bringing it into being - and not doing his own will or telling God how it should be done! Because no man can make a law; he can only find that it exists, become aware or conscious of its being in existence as applying to or complying or combined with other influences that he finds already in existence. As to where the forces arrived from, he knows not. No more than these other things that I just quoted that we know nothing about.

“Certainly I believe that the Christ Spirit is something to be attained by all men, and by the attaining of it we attain that which is the purpose of the One Spirit - or One Son that came into the earth for man’s comprehension, understanding, knowledge, or what have you. You can put all the words you want to, and it means the one thing that has been presented from the beginning, whether by Galileo, Newton, Darwin or what not, whether in Atlantis, Lemuria, Egypt, Rome, or any place - it has been the manifestation of that which is unseen to materiality - the One Son, the one thought - God’s desire to save that which had erred; which is my belief as to what the Son means to the earth, or as to what the Christ means to the earth. For it is that something which makes an awareness in souls.

“This may be a lot of hooey to you, [440], I don’t know. But because we can’t use the sources or experiences of individuals, recorded in what is ordinarily termed the Holy Book - or can’t accept it, is no reason for us to discard it altogether, do you think? If we do, what’s to take its place? Of course, our experiences that we may have day by day are much more realities to us while we are in this present vale; because we do not here become aware of anything except by comparison. Whether we arrive at it through the five senses or not depends upon how keen those senses are. For, many a blind person has seen much more than had he had his eyes wide open. Many a deaf person has heard much more than those who were able even to hear an octave above or below that known as our scale.

“I don’t know, [440], whether we disagree in our theories or not. Our disagreements, if we are both sincere, should make us think the more of each other. Yes? No? SINCERITY is the keynote of every soul, as to whether it has a faith, a hope or a purpose. I could never accord myself to saying I believe this or that, for - as I said in the beginning - to me Truth is a growing thing. Then, if Truth is the Christ Spirit, a manifestation of God, God is also a growing thing to our consciousness. And He must ever be. Consequently, we see evolution in the earth of a soul. We see evolution in the terrestrial world. Then it must be in the celestial also. For, what we see and may be conscious of in materiality is merely a shadow of that in the mental and spiritual realms.

“Yes, I believe that I AM. Yes, I believe the universe consists of mind, matter and energy, and I believe that every phenomenon is a manifestation of - but does not necessarily explain - mind or matter or energy. That they are inseparable I do not believe, for energy is the mind SEEKING to find expression - the seeking is the energy and that expressed is the matter. Consequently, they may be separated.

“Yes, I believe I am a focal point of matter and energy, and it may be called electricity. I believe that I possess a free will. I also believe it was the gift of the Creator and not of my own making. And it is the only thing that may separate me from becoming wholly aware of that which made me matter, energy or mind.

“I do not know as I understand just what is meant to be conveyed by cosmic mind, unless it is that the mind is made up of all the experiences through which it - as a companion of a soul - has experienced since its separation from the first cause. Then I believe I have a cosmic mind, and it is in a state of evolution or de-evolution, dependent upon what I have done about that I have become conscious of - in whatever state of experience or being I may have become aware of my existence.

“I believe that love and faith are the primary qualifications for attaining that awareness, and that they bring harmony - when the will is directed to produce harmony. I do believe that faith which is wholly blind is in mighty bad shape, but that it may manifest through our senses - and to call them five only is to say there are only five brotherhoods or five approaches, and I think there are many more - even than seven.

“I believe the destructive forces that allay our evolution are not altogether fear or ignorance, but if we will add to fear and ignorance SELF-WILL (or stubbornness) I think we will have the whole situation.

“Also I believe that love and understanding are the necessary requisites for the fulfillment of life, not only in materiality but in the mental and the spiritual. For, as we recognize the elements about us in the earth, air, water, fire, and the other things that have an antipathy or an attraction one for another, and that are so necessary for the production of energy in any form - whether to run a little steam engine, make a man fall in love, or what not, we find those elements occupied - and occupied with things that have taken form. From what? I know not! Possibly that was the way the eagle turned in the air. Possibly it was the way the serpent turned on the rock. Possibly it was what that poor sister thought when the man looked at her. Is this all foolishness or not? [Pr. 30:19]

“Yes sir, we must be able to answer always for the faith that impels us to conduct our lives as we do, and we must not be blaming somebody else for it either. We have a good illustration of that in the very Book you have discarded, and there’s never been a better one.

“I believe also that all these forces are in a state of evolution, for they are occupied by the souls that were once with the Creative Force and are essentially a part of that Force.

“I agree with you that through our five senses we may perceive but a very limited portion of the universe, or be aware of those very influences that are about us, as to whether or not they occupy any of the realms in which consciousness may be maintained. But it’s only in their application through the five senses that they VISIBLY affect the material body, unless it has been purified, consecrated or dedicated to a certain or definite service.

“I believe that the God-mind (if that is what you mean by cosmic mind) in expression works according to law and order, but those that are endowed with a portion of that often upset the apple cart as would rust on a skate or a lute in the most beautiful musical instrument, or as would an error in the mind of the most consecrated soul!

“As to whether the purpose of science is to discover that truth or not, I know not; for I am not a scientist. MY purpose, if I know it, is to discover those truths and to find how or in what manner they may be given to seekers for their own expression of that cosmic mind in materiality.

“Whether these beliefs of mine are worthy of being presented to others, I know not. I am willing, as you say, to present that which I have found good in my own experience. I cannot present anything else.

“It may be a waste of time to reason with others that are in a lower state of evolution, but if we think more highly of ourselves than we ought to think it certainly becomes error in our own development. I believe if we ever approach the awareness of the Christ Consciousness, or an understanding of any of the laws of God, it will be on the arm of those we have tried to help along life’s pathway. Whether you compromise yourself by attempting to teach others depends upon how highly you think of yourself. And he that would be exalted must abase himself, for if we would have life we must give it. There’s only one way that we can ever aid another individual, and that is to take him where we find him; not hope that he will climb up to where we are - if we are on a higher level; but by stooping down, and through just kindness, love, long-suffering, patience, lift him up to where we are! For, if we are secure in that we have believed and know that He is able to keep that which we have committed unto His care by the deeds done in our conscious experiences, then we need never be afraid. The fear of contaminating our own selves by stooping down to one in mire is a real fear indeed, and one that hurts AWFULLY! But to be able to save a soul, whether he is in the so-called church of today or wandering the streets in the muck and mire of those things that society calls vile, to persuade him to look up and lift up and know that He may be in Him just now - there is more joy before the Throne of God for such an one than for all those lovely folk that think they are justified in not ever stooping down!

“As to what the present or future generations will do about the attitude of the church of today, or the scientist, depends the most upon what WE as individuals do about what WE know of the laws of God. For, the violet that blooms unseen, or though its odor goes on the desert air, has not lost its reward in doing and being that which the first cause, or God, intended it to do or be!

“No sir, I do not say you are wrong in a single thing. For, if what you feel answers that call that is in every soul for the manner it wishes to seek its Maker, then I say God’s blessing be with you. Cast all these things aside that you are able to; I cannot. To disregard those who are seeking through the denominational churches and not try to teach and warn them as to how to apply the real truths attempted to be presented by that One they claim to have chosen as their guide, I cannot. I MUST try to help. That’s my nature. That’s where I am in my evolution. If that doesn’t answer for you, and it isn’t your experience that it is a good thing to do, don’t you do it - but don’t find fault with my doing my job, as I’m not going to find fault with you doing your job - if you do a good job! The proof of any man’s belief, [440], is what he does about or with it!

“Yes sir, we want to pull together always. If you are in the boat way ahead, then you can certainly mark the way to make it easier for those who come along next - if you are willing. And you will always find there are souls seeking just as sincerely as yourself to find the right way. And whether your boat goes on the river that is named Christ Jesus, Galileo, Krishnamurti, or what not, doesn’t mean a thing to me. If your boat runs into the stream and is evoluting, even though it may be far ahead and out of sight already, it can leave the way marked so plain - even as He did, my Lord and my Master, Jesus, the hated man of Galilee! My experience, my environs, my knowledge, haven’t gotten any farther than that. For, I have long since determined that I will know nothing among men save Jesus, the Christ, and Him crucified! [I Cor. 2:2]

“No sir! What you have written me is wonderful. It is marvelous. I do not know that I have answered aright, but I have answered as my conscience and my heart dictate. And may God, the Father of light, of truth, and His Spirit that shineth ever unto those that honestly and sincerely seek, light your way and mine!

That the experiences which come to us when our consciousness is laid aside do take us where we are should be, it appears to me, evidence that it is the only way we can help our fellow man - take him where we find him. That is what the man Jesus did, even if many of your teachers didn’t do quite so well - but brought that which is caste and class and self-satisfied individuals!

“I’m sure the vision must have been beautiful, and I long for the opportunity to at some time, through your kindness, meet your friend - [J. Krishnamurti] and, POSSIBLY, unlearn much that has been my experience. I’m willing!” [6/23/81 GD’s note: E.C.’s 4/24/34 letter to Mr. [440] was excerpted and printed in the July, 1981 A.R.E. R18. 4/25/34 Mr. [440] wrote for a Ck. Physical Rdg. [See 440-17 on 5/3/34] in which he stated:

“Just now, as Dad [442] has said, it seems to me to be the wisest thing, as far as the etheronic instrument is concerned, to start at the bottom and learn first the principles upon which such a machine must be constructed. In the first place, if it is going to take an operator years to learn to operate it [Dr. Paul E. Cold’s etheronic instrument], then he must know a lot more about it, what he intends to undertake, than I now know. Secondly, if the instrument has any real value it should be presented to the world by one who knows how to explain its function in practical, tangible, scientific terminology something which I would be unable to do in my present state of ignorance. To hope to have it accepted by the world, this individual should possess the proper degrees to identify him as one capable of discovering such a thing.

“The first thing, then, is to complete my courses in college and, while thus obtaining much valuable knowledge, to also obtain the desired degrees. There is no rush, you can’t rush a flower that is going to bloom. If this instrument is truly of value it will come about anyway if not through me then another, and as long as humanity gets it, that is the important thing. Do you agree?”

R20. 5/1/34 Letter from [440] to EC from Bonita, Ariz.: “Your fine and welcome letter written on my birthday arrived yesterday. Many thanks for what you have done for [267] [See 267-2 Reports.] and for attempting to reconcile Dr. Crews with her. I am sure that it is all settled by now. [267] writes she had a wonderful talk with you. I am glad and hope that it has deepened the friendship between you.

“I hope I did not convey the idea that I thought you had a fixed philosophy. In fact my letter was in no way intended to reflect upon your beliefs but was written in response to your advice to me to read the Bible every night if I wished to be on the right path. All my life men have told me this, shouted it from their pulpits, and then in turn made as sad a mess of their lives as one could hope for. It was like waving a red flag in front of a bull. I am sick of seeing where following this advice has brought my fellow man, if reading of the wars and atrocities that have been perpetrated in its name and if being told it was the One Word of God. That is all. I only gave expression to an inner distaste for the person who will read the Bible and accept it as the word of God and then call Marcus Aurelius, Plato and them heathen idlers. I was not criticizing you in any way. I was only presenting a picture for your examination. Had I painted it on canvas it could not have been more impersonal.

“I am in accord with all you have expressed in your letter. I too believe in the teachings of Jesus and bear the deepest admiration of my life for his courage and outspoken words. But I do not believe in being confined to his teachings. The Bible still stands to me as a book of interest. By rejecting it I refer to rejecting the idea that in it alone has God spoken to man, or that it is any more helpful to a seeking soul than thousands of other books.

“I regret that you interpret my words to mean that because a man belongs to the Christian Church I will not help him. I do not care what his faith is. If I can help him, I sincerely pray that the Great Creator grant me the wisdom and strength to do so. But if he be a Mohammedan or Buddhist, I am just as willing to help him as I know you too would be, and am just as willing to learn from him. Of myself, I am nothing nor have I tried to put myself in the position of a teacher. As the artist who feels impelled to paint his thoughts so have I been impelled to write. If the picture does not suit the wall of your room throw it away. My best to all.

R21. 6/29/34 Letter to EC from Dr. B. E. Briscoe of Willcox, Arizona: “On my arrival home, a short time ago, I found your letter and pamphlet, awaiting me, as you suggested you would do. I have read them through and have enjoyed reading them, but must confess that it is beyond my imagination or understanding, but it is not the first time in my life that I have met with things or conditions which were a puzzle to me. I don’t suppose there will ever come a time when we will all have a complete understanding of the different things we encounter in this world.

“I enjoyed visiting with you very much, and I hope that some day there may be an opportunity, whereby we might be able to meet again.

“I spent a little bit more than eight weeks in New Orleans. It is a very large school and many thousand patients. I got in some very fine work, made many good connections and acquaintances, in fact I don’t think I ever had a better time in my life in every way. While there I made arrangements to go as a ship physician on a cruiser to Central and South America. Nothing preventing, I will go some time in August. Of course I am looking forward to the many good people that I am going to meet on this cruise, and the valuable information that I might gain, in addition to the sightseeing part of it.

R22. 7/7/34 EC’s letter to Dr. B. E. Briscoe, Willcox, Arizona:

“I was indeed very glad to have yours of the 29th. I realize that you were quite busy and no doubt your stay and course at the university did require longer than you at first anticipated, for I am sure when anyone gives of themselves unselfishly to a service for their fellow man little thought is taken as to time or to the outcome save as for others.

“Am happy to know that you had such a wonderful session. I am sure you enjoyed many experiences that were very much worth while, and they will prove most valuable to you in the days and years to come in a service to your fellows.

“The idea of your being able to have a Central and South American cruise is certainly most wonderful, and I am in hopes that it all works out just as you anticipate, and I am sure that the associations and contacts in the whole experience will be quite a valuable asset, not only in adding to your material pleasure at this time, but in making for associations and contacts that will be valuable to you in many ways. I rather envy your experience. Wish that it might be possible for me to join you in such an excursion.

“We have just closed our third Annual Congress. This is a ‘get together’ meeting of our Active Members and friends throughout the country who can find the time and who feel it will be valuable to them to come in closer contact with the sources and channels of information through which this work has come. We had quite a nice meeting this time, the largest in attendance and the most enthusiastic group that we have had thus far. Quite a number of people were present who have been in touch with and who have received benefits from the information, who have known of the work for years, who have not had the privilege of meeting us in person before. We had people from Michigan, New York, Long Island, Georgia, Alabama, Ohio, Kentucky, Washington, D.C. and of course quite a number from Virginia and North Carolina and some other places. We had quite a number of reports from physicians who had cases under their observation, cases that had baffled the profession in many instances. In fact, as I said to you and I think as it should be, very seldom does the individual approach these channels for information until they have tried everything else. Not that this is to take the place of the medical profession - it can’t be done. It is only the medical profession who can sign a birth certificate or a death certificate, either, yet there are many of these who make a blunder.

“However, if you would like to see these reports when we get settled down again I would like to send them to you, if you would like to see them.

“It would be very hard for me to tell you just how close and how much Mr. Little, your uncle and your wife’s uncle, meant to me, for in our earliest days he was one of our best friends. He was himself his own worst enemy at times, but indeed a very remarkable and wonderful man, and after all of these years to come in contact, even though for just a moment or a few minutes, with some of his people, it seems to me something has guided these circumstances that would be hard for us as sane people to even put our finger on.

“I know that you are too busy a man to carry on a correspondence, but I will be glad to hear from you, and I am just hoping and trusting that we may find something of vital interest and sympathy between us that we may keep closer in touch with each other.

R23. 9/25/34 Letter from [440] to EC: “The past month has been a most hectic one and finds me today settled in Harvard ready to begin classes tomorrow…

“At present electrical engineering is the goal and nothing else must be allowed to interfere. Psychic phenomena interests me so much that if I also played around with it, it would have a serious distracting influence.”

R24. 10/8/34 “I can honestly say that there is no one in my life, with the exception of my mother, who has helped me to understand better the possibilities that this life may hold, than you. You may find that hard to believe, yet through your readings I have found inspiration for the future and confidence in what I am doing in the present. I question the rdgs., of course, as any intelligent person would do, but you must realize that any criticism or suggestion that I should offer for the work is prompted by my sincere interest in psychic research and my belief that you have the opportunity and the ability to be one of its pioneers… [He requested Ck. Physical 440-19.]

“If you have time to also ask about the feasibility of an expedition next summer to discover definite proof of the existence of the continent of Atlantis, it might prove most interesting.”

R25. 11/2/34 EC wrote him about forthcoming rdg. demonstrations before the Psychology Dept. heads at Univ. of Pa. [See 758-38 and 727-1, 11/11/34.]

R26. 12/8/34 Card: “I just read over one of your old letters in which you ask my idea of a tangible demonstration. Such a demonstration would be the discovery or invention of an instrument which would prove the nature of psychic laws at which we only guess at present. Do you think we can do it? That will be the test.”

R29. 8/6/73 GD’s note to Drs. Gladys & Wm. McGarey, Phoenix, AZ: “At last I have found the name of the ranch where EC stayed with Mr. [440] in 3/34. It was SEVENTY-SIX RANCH, BONITA, AZ, in the next county from Casa Grande, but I’m sure EC and Mr. [440] drove all over that territory while there. Notice attached correspondence [440-11] mentioning prominently some of the people they met while there. Will you tell the lady who spoke out at our lecture, who said there was no dude ranch in Casa Grande in 1934? I didn’t mean to be misleading, but I felt sure it was in that area of Casa Grande where you are now planning the A.R.E. Clinic.”

Dear Hugh Lynn,

My research interests lead me down many interesting (and often blind) alleys. Recently I came across something to which you (or Gladys) may be able to relate.

The reputed situation:

1. There was a man, Mr. “X” (see attached reported data) who did some outstanding theoretical and experimental work toward an understanding of some “psychical phenomena”, and in particular, with respect to the existence and nature of an all-pervasive “ether”.

2. Mr. “X“‘s name, was given specifically (it is reported) and his theories endorsed by Edgar Cayce, and further (it is reported) Cayce said that the works of this scientist would be fundamental to an understanding of “ether” and gravitation.

3. It is further claimed that the Cayce reading which specifically endorsed Dr. “X”, by name, is missing from the A.R.E. Library.

4. It is reported that some NASA scientist has written something for A.R.E. regarding energy forces in Atlantis, in which he requests readers to supply any available information with regard to copies of the works of Dr. “X”.

I would be interested in:

a. the name of Dr. “X” b. gaining access to any of his “works” c. the name of the NASA scientist and seeing a copy of whatever he wrote.

Obviously I am concerned with anything that is being written or said which links Edgar Cayce to non-medical research, and particularly, everything that the A.R.E. is publishing which directly or indirectly gives credence to “far-out” ideas.

Is there anything you can tell me about any of this?

Hugh Lynn sent your letter of 7/14/75 to the E.C.F. to answer regarding Mr. “X”. Yes, there was a man, Thomas Jefferson Jackson See, who did theoretical and experimental work regarding ether. His name was not given by Edgar Cayce but by Mr. [440] in his reading 440-11, Question and Answer 28 asking about his works regarding etheronic energy - and in his answer Edgar Cayce endorsed the man T. J. J. See. The reading is not missing from the library. It can be found under 440-11.

A NASA scientist, Dr. John H. Sutton, Ph.D., wrote an article for the Jan. 1974 A.R.E. Journal entitled “The Tuaoi Stone” using Dr. T. J. J. See’s information and requesting further information from anyone regarding his previous works.

We are enclosing a copy of our A.R.E. member C. B. Wynniatt’s letter of 6/10/75, from 25 Commins Road, Onerahi, Whangarei, New Zealand, saying that he now has all of T. J. J. See’s relevant works, which he lists.

Let us know if you contact C. B. Wynniatt in New Zealand regarding See’s works. Perhaps our Library could get a copy of some of them.

“I think that you should also make a note of the fact that T. J. J. See’s relevant works, all of which I now have, are: ELECTRODYNAMIC WAVE-THEORY OF PHYSICAL FORCES, vol. 1, 1917; and vol. 2 (NEW THEORY OF THE ETHER), 1922. The 1922 volume is a reprint of 7 papers originally published between 1920 and 1922 in the German astronomical journal, ASTRONOMISCHE NACHRICHTEN.

“8th MEMOIR ON THE NEW THEORY OF THE ETHER, ASTRONOMISCHE NACHRICHTEN, February, 1926. A supplement to the 1922 volume, in which it was not included.

“WAVE THEORY, published in 12 Books, constituting 14 bound volumes (Books 9 and 11 in two parts each), between 1938 and 1954.

“The publishers in all cases were Wheldon & Wesley (England) and Thos. P. Nichols (U.S.A.) (now defunct). They run to a total of about 4000 pages, and are so voluminous because they include a lot of historical and biographical material, and, in the case of the 1938 to 1954 volumes, because they were reproduced from double-spaced typewriting, not typeset. They were printed at See’s own expense, this being necessary because his theories were directly contrary to the relativity theories of Einstein.”
