This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his office in Pinewood on Lake Drive, Va. Beach, Va., this 24th day of March, 1932, in accordance with request made by those present.

1. EC: Yes, we have the body here - this we have had before. Changes are taking place with the mental and physical forces of the body, in line with that as has been outlined. Well that patience, precaution, be taken as respecting the administration of the applications as will change the vibrations in the system; that is, through the magnetic forces, as well as that the DESIRES are appeased sufficient to keep an even balance while the magnetic forces are making the changes in the system.

2. Ready for questions.

3. (Q) What precaution should be made? (A) That she doesn’t injure herself!

4. (Q) By the one giving the magnetic treatment? (A) This combines both together! That the body does not injure itself in those reactions that are bringing about the changes!

5. (Q) How can this be prevented? (A) Just use precautions! Just as has been given, to give that which supplies the desire, when necessary. [Dr. Harry L. James’ medicine]

R1. MISS [295]‘s REPORT:

“Friday, March 25, 1932: “Good reactions. Mind seems a little clearer; she answered questions intelligently. She read newspaper, or held it before her and looked at it most time during treatment, though she held meditation with me at the beginning of treatment. We hold audible prayers each time. She seemed rather resentful during the time of the treatment, though nothing was said.

“She only said ‘Yes’, or ‘Uh huh’, when I asked her if she could feel any vibrations from my hands and similar questions. Felt current again, but not so strong. Strong vibrations from group, however. Miss Annie Cayce and Mrs. Hesson rather worried. I know changes are taking place. May God be with us and help that group to hold on!

“Saturday, March 26, 1932: Late getting started on treatment, (ten minutes late) on account of [543]‘s indisposition. She seemed brighter and answered questions more rationally than yesterday. She was more co-operative, and relaxed and went to sleep. Treated her nose where fell during the last severe attack, also mouth where she had chewed her lips and tongue, this at the end of treatment ordinarily given and for only a minute or so.

“Sunday, March 27, 1932: Arrangements made with group to hold meditations from 12:45 to 1:15 P.M. [543] seemed much more cheerful and talked much more freely, telling me about her gardenia sent by her sister. Everyone co-operated beautifully, some better than others. Seemed to feel more distinct current than ever before. [543] said she had been feeling electricity in her body all day. This was most encouraging.

“It being Easter Sunday, Sarah Elizabeth McPherson [Miss Annie Cayce’s niece] and [543] walked with me down to board walk to view the Easter parade, which did not take place on account of the windy, cold, misty weather. On the way back [543] had a spell, though we did not let her fall. We spoke sharply to her and kept her walking rather rapidly down a side street for about five minutes before she was herself again.

“After we had been home a few minutes, some of us were discussing the incident in the kitchen in low tones or whispers. Someone seemed to take exceptions to this and made some remarks about it which caused [543], who was in the living room, to make some rather impolite remarks and roused some of the others in turn to speak rather sharply to [543]. I learned later that [543] apologized for her attitude.

“Monday, March 28, 1932: [543] was not ready quite again, so had to wait, causing us to be late starting with the treatment. Current strong. Felt lack of co-operation in [341] and Mrs. [2112] today. In evening each acknowledged they did not hold meditation at 11:30. [543] in very talkative mood. Did not seem to be thinking of what we were doing at all. Had to suggest that she keep her mind on good things and try to meditate with me, as she kept bringing up unpleasant incidents, things she had read in the newspapers, etc. She seemed asleep when I left, though more restless during treatment than heretofore.

“Tuesday, March 29, 1932: Late getting started again as [543] wanted to go to bathroom soon after I got started and was detained about five minutes. Had to stop during treatment and get her a handkerchief. Had to do this once before, breaking contact. Did not get any response from [543]‘s parents, or even from [543] today. [341] said he was interrupted during his meditation.

“[543] kept asking how long it would be before she would be able to go home, and if she would be permanently cured. I tried to impress her with the importance of co-operation on her part, telling her that if we truly believed this thing would be done, it would. Was invited there for dinner tonight and noticed a decided change in her attitude. She seemed more cheerful and spirited, playing cards with Sarah Elizabeth and I until about ten o’clock, when she went to bed. She again wanted to know when I thought she could go home. I gave her a little affirmation to say given me by Mrs. [69], as follows:

“I AM SURROUNDED WITH INFINITE LOVE AND WISDOM AND GOD IS MY DELIVERER.

“Also:

“GOD IS WITHIN ME, GOD IS ALL AROUND ME, AND ALL IS WELL.

“The affirmation given in our information is as follows:

“MAY THERE BE MAGNIFIED IN ME THAT AS THE FATHER SEEST I HAVE NEED OF. THY WILL, O FATHER, BE DONE IN ME, AS THOU SEEST I HAVE NEED OF. [262-10, Par. 12-A]

“We did not hold the affirmations audibly at first, but I usually offered a little prayer. Then we said the first given above seven times, the next once, and the last three times. After about two weeks of this we changed and began saying the last seven times, the second once and the first three times.

“Wednesday, March 30, 1932: [543] received treatment beautifully, co-operating almost perfectly. She lay with her eyes closed repeating prayer inaudibly, but with lips moving. She looked so peaceful and almost angelic. She said she was feeling fine and bounced over the bed like an acrobat just before we started.

“They said she had a slight attack in the early morning. She has not had any medicine for two or three days, they also told me. Incidentally, I was not feeling so well when I started, but felt exceedingly well and lifted up when I came away. Seemed like a good sign to me. The group stayed by me and I surely do need their help. [543] was asleep when I left.

“Thursday, March 31, 1932: [543] in very good spirits and cooperated beautifully again. Got started just a little late because [543] had to go to bathroom when we were about to start. We repeated the affirmations together. The group co-operated wonderfully well, I felt yet there seemed to be something lacking, I know not what. Judge [EC - [294]] later said he had difficulty to keep from going into a trance, in fact, did slip away and contacted many forms and things, which left him with a headache.

“Friday, April 1, 1932: [543] in good humor, apparently; said she felt fine. Little late getting started with treatment, owing to [543] not being quite ready. Felt good reactions from all those who have been aiding. Felt rather rested after treatment. [543] said she could always tell a difference, feel the current during and after the treatment.

“Saturday, April 2, 1932: [543] not feeling so good, due to fall during attack in early morning in which she struck her back pretty sharply. Treated this section for a few minutes; she said it felt better. She did not go to sleep, quite. She co-operated nicely. Good reactions from group. In afternoon [543] had an attack in a barber’s chair, rather hard, Sarah Elizabeth said, but she [543] told me she did not lose consciousness. They later went to a show and she seemed all right; I accompanied them to the show, but not barber shop.

“A great change was noticed in [543]‘s nose and mouth after the treatment of last Saturday the following day. The black and purple bruise was almost gone and her mouth much better. This cheered us considerably.

“Sunday, April 3, 1932 - 3:34 to 4:15 P.M. Whole Group held meditation at offices while Judge and I went to Miss Annie’s, as usual. [543] ready this time. After repeating prayer in unison several times, [543] stopped. I looked at her and she was staring at me in a strange manner. It was the beginning of an attack, I suppose. After a few moments it passed off and she became more relaxed and closed her eyes, after saying softly, ‘Good gracious’. Good reactions from group. My arm trembled again. [543] said she nearly always felt this. I do not always; today it was more pronounced.

“Bruised place on [543]‘s back where she fell against trunk nearly well, she said. It was hardly sore. Her nose and mouth healed very quickly, also. How wonderful! Some of the group think we should fast. [560] told me it came to her we should and the instance of Jesus telling some of His disciples a certain type of healing could only be done by prayer and fasting. The very thought came to me also, very forcibly.

“Monday, April 4, 1932: [543] very bright and cheerful; said she had just received some encouraging mail from home. She reacted to the treatment nicely. Noticed clammy spot in region of umbilicus, which I was careful to treat specifically. Felt current very strong several times. [543] apparently went to sleep. Treated approximately thirty minutes.

“Tuesday, April 5, 1932: [543] upset about mother’s plan to come for her Sunday. Says she is much improved and still improving, that she feels better in every way. We had short talk and I urged her to not worry, that all would be well. Noticed clammy spot again. They said she had slight attack yesterday morning. [543] says she is only taking half as much of the medicine as before for the attacks.

“Notice new spots where rash breaks out almost always after each treatment (on myself). Was in sort of a daze today. Do not know the cause, for sure.

“Wednesday, April 6, 1932: [543] in pensive mood this morning, though very talkative at first. Noticed a change in her during application - she seemed to just ‘let go’ after several repetitions of affirmation. My words seemed to have their effect. Heard peculiar reactions in organs of her body. She had slight attack yesterday again. She says she still does not lose consciousness, that the attacks are farther apart and that she takes only about one-half as much of the medicine.

“She seems worried at thought of going home so soon - says now she wants to stay and be completely cured for she knows she has been helped. Her mother wrote she was coming Sunday. Something will happen to the best advantage of all. I ate little today. Am trying to fast.

“Thursday, April 7, 1932: She received treatment nicely. No attacks since day before yesterday. She was much brighter, as the possibility of having to go home Sunday has been removed. Her sister wrote letter that her mother is not coming yet. God help us and give us time, if that is needed, to heal her before we let her go. We believe He is able and willing to do this. May we not cease praying!

“Felt clammy spot rather low down, but it was gone when I left. [543] said she had hard time going to sleep last night, but she was sleeping like a child when I left. Lowered both shades so light would not disturb her. Notice peculiar rash on side of my face I have not noticed heretofore. [543]‘s face has many pimples - wonder if that could affect the one giving this type of treatment? Rash on body not so bad. I take a little Atomidine every day for this.

“Friday, April 8, 1932: [543] had slight attack yesterday just after lunch, they said, while writing letter. She was upstairs and the others heard her pen drop and her tap on the floor with her foot. She was practically all right, however, when they reached her.

“Today she was eager for her treatment and said the affirmations faithfully, as usual. Clammy spot low down again, but it was quite warm when I left. [543] said she believed Christ was able to heal her. She was awake when I finished (half hour, as usual) and I tried some of Dr. Prouty’s suggested passes. Said she could feel a tingling sensation when I did this. The colon seemed quite full this time.

“Saturday, April 9, 1932: Clammy spots still noticed on lower portion of abdomen. Did not respond as quickly to treatment as usual, but power very strong on leaving. Gave a few passes suggested by Dr. Prouty. She said she felt the sensations follow my hands; that her feet always got warm during each treatment and that she always felt relaxed. She is very glad to stay longer and take the treatments.

“Sunday, April 10, 1932: Gave [543] treatment between 12:45 and 1:15. Felt co-operation of [993] - [560] girls and Mrs. [69], even though they had not been specifically notified as to the time. It was understood and the treatment was given as two weeks previous. Found [543] in rather listless mood, though she repeated affirmations faithfully. Back rather cold. Treated higher up with right hand for organs most affected - pelvic organs, with left hand lower, suggested by Mr. Cayce. After finishing gave passes and her cold feet warmed up after several of these, that is, became much warmer, though not hot. She seemed to think I pressed too hard with my hands while giving these passes - said she could feel more difference when I did it more lightly. She again said she felt more relaxed.

“Monday, April 11, 1932: [543] seemed very quiet - as though she were depressed or a little blue. Tried to be as cheerful as possible. Mr. Cayce could not hold the meditation today on account of being called away - however I felt his co-operation even though his mind was on other things. [543] had an attack just at the close of Sunday School yesterday, they said, though only slight, as she did not lose consciousness. Then she had a similar one this morning. Did some of the passes again at the end of the treatment, a few times from head to feet. Still notice rash on myself, more pronounced at times than others. Take Atomidine occasionally for this, also apply it locally. It is very annoying.

“Tuesday, April 12, 1932: Found [543] in much better spirits and more in tune with what I am trying to do. She wanted to start on time and everything went off nicely. Her attacks seem rarer and more faint each time. Some days I feel that my words have more weight than others.

“Wednesday, April 13, 1932: [543] in rather gay mood. She was planning on going to Norfolk for a colonic and to the show and to shop, in the afternoon, someone to accompany her, of course.

“Rather unusual experience during treatment. After saying affirmations together, my right hand, the one on which she was lying, began to tremble. After two or three minutes of this [543] made a sound as though she was trying to speak. I looked at her and asked her what she said. She did not answer, but from all appearances an attack was about to begin. Her face became distorted, her eyes fixed, her arms thrown above her head, that is one of them and the other stretched up in the air rigidly, and she turned half over away from me. I continued to hold my hands in position, but thought I was going to have to call somebody. After about thirty seconds of this she relaxed, an intelligent look came back into her eyes, and she laughed. I was beginning to feel concerned, but she came out of it very quickly and we proceeded as before. My hand continued to vibrate, even my arm and finally my whole body, the motion becoming so forceful as to shake the bed and [543]. My face became rather flushed (I could see in a mirror) my hands became hot, and perspired freely. Felt the sensation for an hour or so after the treatment. [543] seemed relaxed and feeling fine at end of treatment. We were both amused at the phenomena, though not in the spirit of making fun, but more in amused wonderment. Tried some of the passes again.

“[543] seemed eager to do just what I said and wanted my advice as to just how long to rest and how warmly to dress in going to town. In afternoon, while waiting for car to come home from Norfolk, she asked me if I thought some candy mints would hurt her. I told her I didn’t know. She refrained from eating any, however, also some salted almonds which she had.

“Thursday, April 14, 1932: Very good reactions, though not nearly so strong vibrations as yesterday, that is, they were not so apparent. Had more of a swaying motion this time. [543] is not quite so exuberant as yesterday, but not by any means cross. She responded very well to the treatment. We were about five minutes late getting started, but through no fault of [543]‘s. She complained of a pain in her left hand, which I treated for about a minute. Also did a few passes down her body.

“Learned that four of the group in Norfolk did not co-operate with me yesterday. This may have been the cause of the manifestation, I do not know.

“Friday, April 15, 1932: Was in very despondent mood all morning before treating [543], I am sorry to say, but prayed earnestly that it all be removed from me. Was greatly helped. [543] was in rather a quiet mood and said she was feeling fine, but did not smile. Noticed clammy spots low down on abdomen; these disappeared during treatment. I have trouble with cold hands most every day - have to always warm them. Sometimes [543] remarks on their coldness. They say she had two slight attacks today. Mr. Cayce saw vision of his mother during meditation.

“Saturday, April 16, 1932: [543] rather quiet this morning, but a little more cheerful, I think. Received assurance she would be all right; so did Judge [EC - [294]]. Clammy spots not so apparent. She went soundly to sleep, not even waking when I left. Pulled down shades and let her sleep. No attacks today, as yet. During treatment while in deep meditation she gave a little jump and seemed to settle down and relax. Did not use passes today. [543] was later told what Judge said about her getting well and she seemed elated. [4/16/32 P.M. See 295-6, Par. 11-A—13-A in re effect on [295] of [543]‘s tr., cleansing her own mind, true meaning of fasting, etc.]

“Sunday, April 17, 1932: Treatment given for about twenty five minutes beginning about 3:45, while whole group gathered at office for their group reading, [993] leading meditation. Vibrations very strong - more of swaying motion of my body than usual. [543] was very quiet, but did not go to sleep. Not so much clamminess noticed, but rather a fullness. She had two slight attacks, I was told, one in Sunday School again. Noticed rash breaking out on myself again. It was nearly all gone until today.

“[543] had short attack on way down town Saturday, Sarah Elizabeth said. They sat down on some church steps until she recovered, when she talked just a little silly, according to her companion, but soon got over it.

“Monday, April 18, 1932: [543] asked first thing about a prayer given by Mrs. [69] which she thought I had failed to give her. I assured her she was using it. Clammy spots again in lower region of abdomen and around umbilicus center. Warm when I finished. She was very quiet - vibrations good

• swaying motion felt. No spells today, as yet.

“Tuesday, April 19, 1932: [543] had another attack this morning, losing consciousness for a very short time. She pulled the dresser over, spilling all the drawers out and everything in it, but was not hurt. No one else was upstairs at the time, but they rushed up and found [543] conscious again, but apparently none the worse for the experience. Miss Cayce said [543] had been rather cross for the past twenty-four hours, but she seemed to be in a good humor when I gave the treatment. Noticed again the cool spot in the region of the umbilicus. Swaying motion of my body again, which [543] remarked about. She said she was surprised the first time this happened and wondered what was happening. I tried to explain what it was to her, which seemed to satisfy her.”

R2. 4/19/32 EC’s letter to Mr. [1212], [543]‘s father: “I am sure you will hear from the secretary of the group who has been working with us in Miss [543]‘s behalf, but I want to tell you and Mrs. […] about the condition as I see it. I am going to try to be rather pessimistic than optimistic; and I feel I have every right to be optimistic. I only wish you both could see her. Her whole appearance and attitude, and outlook on life, seems to be so very much better. True, she occasionally has a little attack, but they have changed so much in their severity and duration. Rarely does she lose consciousness for more than a second or two, and she is able immediately to go on with whatever her line of thought was. Sometimes she misses a day or more without any of these. Rarely has she had more than one in a day, if that. She has only been taking two of the Hunter tablets a day, while she used to take as many as four or five at one dose. [GD’s note: Until the above reference in EC’s letter I had the impression, from Mr. [1212]‘s letter of 3/11/32 under 543-16, Par. R2, that Dr. Harry L. James’ medicine had been preferred for [543] instead of Dr. Lafayette M. Hunter’s. Evidently they had chosen to give her Dr. Hunter’s. See 543-16 and 543-17.] Now I know this sounds more like optimism than it does pessimism, but you know we are so very anxious - and we do hope that you and Mrs. […] will hold the thought with the group, each day, that she IS well, through Jesus Christ

R4. MISS [295]‘s REPORT CONT’D (from Par. R3 above):

“Wednesday, April 20, 1932: “[543] not feeling so well; she seemed rather cheerful, though Miss Cayce said she had been very cross for the past twenty-four hours. Had slight attack in morning. Clammy spots noticed.

“Thursday, April 21, 1932: [543] rather hard to talk with this morning. Seemed to be in ill humor. Answered me rather shortly. Am trying to win her confidence and feel that I have it most of the time. Very cool spots around and below umbilicus center. These changed often during treatment, but there was more of an even temperature over the entire area at close of treatment. She did not go to sleep. She asked me about the affirmation given me by Mrs. [69] again. The Healing Group had a reading [4/21/32 P.M. See 281-5, Par. 3-A—8-A giving details as to magnetic tr. by Miss [295] for Miss [543], reasons for it, effects, position of hands, a new affirmation for Miss [543] to hold, etc.] in which some questions were asked on [543].

“Friday, April 22, 1932: [543] very emotional and even wept. We think it was caused by the departure of a friend. Again found clamminess, which disappeared after treatment. Gave her affirmation given for her in reading [281-5, Par. 6-A.]: THERE IS BEING CREATED IN MY BODY THAT DIVINE LOVE OF THE CHRIST CONSCIOUSNESS THAT WILL ERADICATE ALL UNCOMMON, OR ANY DESIRES THAT WOULD HINDER THE BODY FROM BEING PHYSICALLY FIT. We repeated it seven times. At end of treatment she almost had an attack, after talking a little and bursting into tears. I held her head, but I don’t believe she even lost consciousness. As she turned away from me she struck me with her elbow, but was aware of it for she immediately begged my pardon. I was informed she had a rather hard attack in the afternoon and that later she took a walk and seemed her normal self again when she returned. She was supplied with about two-thirds of a quart of Maypop bitters yesterday. [As recommended in her Life Rdg. 543-11.]

“Saturday, April 23, 1932: Changed treatment somewhat; treated liver area, right hand on front and left on center at spine about hand’s width below shoulder blades, from which impulses come to liver [As in 281-5, Par. 5-A?]. Then tried several passes. Used new affirmation given for [543] in Healing Group reading, as follows:

“THERE IS BEING CREATED IN MY BODY THAT DIVINE LOVE OF THE CHRIST CONSCIOUSNESS THAT WILL ERADICATE ALL UNCOMMON, OR ANY DESIRES THAT WOULD HINDER THE BODY FROM BEING PHYSICALLY FIT. [281-5, Par. 6-A.]

“Was told [543] had an attack yesterday afternoon and a much more severe one after dinner, the most severe for several weeks. Miss Annie was of the opinion it was caused by overeating. We had a little talk at the end of the treatment, which seemed to reassure her.

“Sunday, April 24, 1932: Reverted back to usual treatment for digestive organs and organs of pelvis region. She responded nicely. Gave treatment 12:45 to 1:15 P.M. Felt pronounced swaying movement. Good color in face. She knew her new affirmation the second day. Walked with her in afternoon and she seemed to enjoy it very much.

“Monday, April 25, 1932: Patient had slight attack, but did not lose consciousness. Miss Cayce says she is becoming more and more self-conscious of the attacks and seems to fight them harder.

“She responded to the treatment well, saying affirmations faithfully. Mrs. [69] sent her a little affirmation on ‘Faith’, or ‘Prayer of Faith’, which should help her a lot. Gave a few gentle manipulations for tiredness in shoulders and knees after the magnetic application.

“Tuesday, April 26, 1932: Treated liver area today, thirty minutes They said she fell in attack this morning, but when they reached her she was all right. The Healing Group met today. It was decided that the one applying treatments [myself - [295]] first hold this meditation with group:

“OPEN THOU MINE HEART TO THE UNSEEN FORCES THAT SURROUND THE THRONE OF GRACE, BEAUTY AND MIGHT, THROWING ABOUT ME THAT PROTECTION THAT COMES THROUGH THE THOUGHTS OF HIM. [262-3, Par. 16-A]

“Then:

“FATHER, HEAR OUR PLEADING FOR THIS CHILD OF THINE WHO HAS ERRED AND NOW SEEKS THY FACE. MERCY UPON US ALL, THROUGH HIM WHO RAS PROMISED THAT WHAT WE ASK IN HIS NAME WILL BE DONE IN THIS BODY. [281-2, Par. 6-A]

“Then say: (With patient) SEVEN TIMES -

“THERE IS BEING CREATED etc. [281-5, Par. 6-A]

“Wednesday, April 27, 1932: Started on new method of holding affirmations - vibrations very strong and varying. Treated colon and lower organs. Felt effect of my meditation as well as others. [543] seemed quite bright and looked exceeding well. They said she had mild attack in the early morning; soon recovered, however. She seems to fight them harder. Felt swaying motion, as well as hand trembling, but not both at same time.

“Judge [EC - [294]] and I had a talk about [543]‘s case before we went over.

“Thursday, April 28, 1932: [543] quiet, but co-operated well. Treated colon area and lower organs again. [543] led a program in evening for literary club, leading admirably well. Once she started to have an attack, but overcame it.

“Friday, April 29, 1932: Treated liver area; good reactions. No attacks today, as yet. Felt distinct current at tips of fingers on right hand, which was placed on liver proper, while left placed at plexus just below shoulders at spine. She seemed brighter when I left. Said feet became much warmer during treatment. Tried passes and feet became warmer still.

“Saturday, April 30, 1932: Miss Cayce said [543] had been very cross and morose - she thought because the dosage of [543]‘s medicine had been cut down; said she had noticed this happening every time she cut down on it; said [543] had very slight attack last night. [543], however, seemed quite cheerful when I arrived to give the treatment. Had good vibrations, though we started about fifteen minutes late. [543] was getting a lamp treatment and was not quite ready, though we were a little late ourselves. Treated colon and pelvic organs. Good color in face and eyes clear and bright.

“Sunday, May 1, 1932: Treated [543] after group arrived in afternoon for reading on lesson, between 3:45 and 4:15 P.M. Vibrations not quite so strong - think due to negative attitude of myself, though tried hard to get in proper attunement before giving treatment. [543] went to sleep peacefully. Treated colon and lower organs again. Treat liver area once, colon and pelvic organs twice, then back to liver again.

“In the evening, during a meeting, [543] gave a queer little noise, kind of a moaning or humming sound in her throat, and acted very much as though she would go into a spell, but she came out of it quickly. She seemed very bright and cheery. She seemed just a little hilarious just after this happened, laughing when there was apparently nothing to laugh about, but she soon became calm.

“Monday, May 2, 1932: Treated liver area. Good reactions. [543] and I had a talk and her faith seems to be on the increase. Gave a few passes.

“Tuesday, May 3, 1932: Reverted to colon and pelvic organs again. Vibrations good. Started on new order of treatment by group, as per meeting last night. Four patients centered on for laying on of hands, the meditations as follows:

“Open our hearts to those of the unseen forces that surround the throne of grace, beauty, and might, and throwing about ourselves that protection that is found in the thoughts of Him. [262-3, Par. 8-A]

“Our Father who art in Heaven, HEAR our pleading for Thy children, who in weakness have erred and seek Thy face! Mercy, O God, to us all, through Him who-promised what we ask in His name will be done in these bodies. [281-2, Par. 6-A]

“THEN NAMES ARE CALLED.

“May there be magnified in these bodies that the Father seest they have need of! Thy will, O Father, be done in these bodies, as Thou seest they have need of! [262-10, Par. 12-A]

“The above meditations are kept by the members of the Healing Group during the period, 11:30 to 12:00 P.M.

“[543] told me positively she knew the attacks were growing weaker and weaker and that she was more and more able to overcome them.

“Wednesday, May 4, 1932: [543] seemed very quiet at beginning of treatment and a little cross, but talked more later. Treated colon and pelvis again. Also treated her stiff neck, caused, she said, from lying on wet grass recovering from an attack while in the back yard. Said it felt better when I finished.

“Thursday, May 5, 1932: Treated liver area. Good reactions from meditation. No medicine given today. Slight attack in A.M.”

R5. 5/5/32 Father’s ltr. to EC: “We feel so grateful, to each member of the Glad Helpers, it could not be expressed in words, your personal interest in [543] has always been so tender and sweet, always, we will love you and your dear sister so much, for your special interest in [543], which is just like she was one of your own family. I have written [543] today that we plan to come for her May 14th or 15th to bring her home, we wish it was so, that we could let her, remain there longer, but conditions are such that we cannot afford it, [543] writes such lovely letters, how all cooperate in her restoration to normal health. With very high esteem for you, and love for all, I am,

R6. MISS [295]‘s REPORT CONT’D (from Par. R5 above):

“Friday, May 6, 1932: Colon and lower organs. Strong vibrations, part of time, part not so strong. I saw vision of figure draped in dark grey, raising up as from praying and lifting fold of gray from face, then one fold after another seemed to be lifted like blanket after woman vanished. [543] had very hard attack early this morning. Fell and bruised herself in several places but seemed cheerful and hopeful. Her folks intimate coming for her in about a week.

“Saturday, May 7, 1932: [543] very quiet and blue, as well as listless. She seemed to try to appear cheerful. Rather despondent, I think. Tried to bring her out of it. Strong vibrations. Treated same as yesterday. Slight spell this A.M., they said. Yesterday until the time of the attack they had not given her any of the medicine for thirty-six hours.

“Sunday, May 8, 1932: Very strong vibrations. [543] more cheerful and indicated her intention of making the best of things and said she was not going to worry about going home, in which I tried to encourage her. Treated colon area and pelvic organs. In evening she had beginning of an attack, but overcame it. Seemed in good spirits.

“Monday, May 9, 1932: Good reactions - strong vibrations. [543] in fair spirits. Eye better, but still dark.

“Tuesday, May 10, 1932: [543] about the same. Cheerful about going home, though doesn’t want to go. Am treating pelvic organs and colon principally now. Good meditation and vibrations.

“Wednesday, May 11, 1932: [543] had an attack yesterday at head of flight of stairs just as she started down. Fell headlong. Bumped her head rather hard, but otherwise no ill effects were noticed [except bruised arms - Dr. Robt. W. Woodhouse, M.D., was called]. Everyone was sure she had broken her back. No one close enough to break the fall. Eye still black from fall a few days ago.

“Am doing all I can and know to become the most perfect channel. She went to get a colonic today. Says they always help her if taken about a week before her period. Day before yesterday Miss Annie stated [543] seldom failed to have an attack when she received a letter from home. The medicine has been resumed to the usual quantity. [543] was of the opinion her last attack was caused from something she ate, she knew not what.

“Thursday, May 12, 1932: [543] in pretty good spirits. Had a headache, which I treated. Treated liver for few minutes. Bruised places - healing rapidly. No spells today.”

R7. 5/12/32 P.M. See 281-6, Par. 16-A through 20-A indicating that neither [543]‘s sister nor mother should continue the tr. at home; if it is decided to continue, Miss [295] should go with her, or go back and forth. Reiteration of “possession” in [543]‘s case, and warning as in Peter 2:22 of the dog or sow returning to its vomit or wallow.

R8. MISS [295]‘s REPORT CONT’D (from Par. R7 above):

“Friday, May 13, 1932: [543] said her headache disappeared before dinner yesterday, that it was almost gone when I left. Treated as usual. Good vibrations. She later went walking with Mr. L. B. Cayce, during which time she had a slight attack in a store, but never lost consciousness.”

R9. 5/13/32 EC’s ltr. to Mr. [1212]: “I have yours of the 5th with enclosure for the Glad Helpers, for which please allow me to express my appreciation. We were indeed sorry to know that it is necessary for Miss [543] to return home just at this time. She had been responding so beautifully to the treatments, that it does seem too bad she couldn’t have at least another few weeks for these to become more effective in her whole condition. For the last few days, since she has known, it has seemed to upset her considerably. There has been a return of the attacks, that seems to be so uncalled for in the light of conditions that have existed for some time - but let’s just hope and pray there will be some way shown whereby we can carry on with the wonderful results I know she has achieved during the past few weeks.

R10. MISS [295]‘s REPORT CONT’D (from Par. R9 above):

“Saturday, May 14, 1932: Cold, clammy spot noticed around umbilicus center. This warmed up gradually during treatment. Treated liver area few minutes. Feet cold. Used a few passes and they warmed up considerably. [543] does not want to go home. She had last two severe attacks since she has known she was going home. Vibrations apparently not so strong. Commanded evil force to come out very positively, which I have done quite often. [GD’s note: 8/31/33 See Miss [295]‘s Ck. Life Rdg. 295-8 indicating that [295] was the - had been the - ‘Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils’ (Luke 8:2). It is explained here what the seven devils were - ‘Avarice, hate, self-indulgence, and those of the kindred selfishnesses; hopelessness and blasphemy.’ Isn’t it interesting that [295], not knowing about this incarnation at the time, had the opportunity to help [543] in a similar problem? “Sunday, May 15, 1932: [Exactly 2 months from time the magnetic tr. started] Gave treatment between 12:15 and 12:45, as she was going home this afternoon. She was still cheerful, yet reluctant about going. Her father came for her just as I finished making the application. Feel that the coldness noticed yesterday was caused by the nearness of the period, which started today. Her father said he could tell a great deal of difference in [543], that her spirituality was much more in evidence, and that she was much brighter and more cheerful and less obstinate.

“Feel quite strongly that if we could have some more time with [543] that she would be completely cured. Feel also that the force had left her for a time, but returned when she learned about having to go home. [543] said she was going to keep up her meditations every day, and wants us to continue to hold her in our prayers.”

R11. 5/25/32 Miss [543] wrote requesting a copy of her diet list, saying she had colitis: “No sir, I surely don’t want to have to go back to those capsules as I was once on them. I take two a day now and they seem to hold down the very hard attacks. I’m continuing to have one or two slight spells a day with distortion but no convulsion - otherwise I feel fine.”

R12. 6/8/32 EC wrote her an encouraging letter.

R14. 6/21/32 Miss [543]‘s letter to EC: “Dear Brother, [She called him ‘Brother’ just like his sisters did.] Your letter reached me on the 16th of May [June]. I was glad to hear from you. I am sorry to tell you I am at Duke Hospital for treatment. I certainly don’t want to have to go back to those capsules. They think they can cure me here, but I don’t think they can cure me. I am sorry to tell you that I haven’t been a bit well since returning from the Beach. Mother is whole-heartedly in sympathy with the work, and I am sorry to tell you my sister isn’t in sympathy with the work.”

R15. 6/28/32 EC’s letter: “Just a line in reply to yours of the 21st. I do not know whether you have returned from Durham or not. No doubt this will be forwarded to you if you have not. I certainly hope they will be able to do something for you there that will be most helpful and lasting. Had you been able to keep on with the treatments you were getting during the latter portion of the work here, I sincerely believe you would have had quite a different condition.”

R16. 6/28/32 Miss [543]‘s letter (not having rec’d EC’s of same date):

“I am just home from Duke Hospital and I feel very weak this morning, but I just wanted to write and let you know that I love you and thank you for your interest and your prayers.

“I went through all kinds of tests and examinations, even to a spinal air injection and x-rays. My ovaries were x-rayed too, which they think is the cause of my attacks [See 543-1] and which has held my spells down until last night in the night I awakened with a rather hard attack. I took the x-ray Friday [6/24/32] and came home Sunday [6/26/32]. They took me off all medicines, everything which held my attacks down, to see the kind of spells I have and they say I have not epilepsy. They now want me to follow up their treatment with a psychiatrist.

“I shall let you know my future plans. Please pray even harder for me. I want to get well. My love for you and yours. Always your girl, [543].”

R17. 7/5/32 EC’s letter: “Their findings seem to be very much in line with the first reading; though I am still persuaded that had you been able to follow out the line of treatments being given the last few weeks you were here, there would have been

• possibly slow, but lasting and permanent relief.

“Be sure and let us hear from you. Give our love to all the family. Know that we will always remember you when we pray. Remember us when you pray.

“With love from all, I am Ever the same,”

R18. 7/22/32 “I tried to write you this past Wed. but we went to Durham for the day. There was a psychiatrist there, from Southern Pines, N.C., who comes to Durham each week now and teaches at the Duke Hospital, whom Mother wished me to see. I did see him and liked him very much indeed. He is greatly known through this part of the country to the medical profession especially. He is a Dr. Poate. He put me on a diet, quite similar to the one you gave, told me to take Petrolagar and told me to rest some each day. The latter I have been doing quite regularly for many months. I am to see him again the 30th of this month… I’m enjoying my home and family, also my friends, though I must confess I miss you and the others very, very much… I’m not gadding about much as it isn’t any too good for me. I’ve learned or am learning that making yourself contented and trying to help others makes a person get more out of life. By knowing you and of your work this has been shown me and, Brother dear, it will go through life with me, I do hope and pray. I can never thank you enough for what you have given me. God bless you and yours always.”

R19. 8/3/32 See 281-9, Par. 4-A in reply to question as to why Prayer Group efforts on behalf of [543] have not borne more fruit.

R20. 9/22/32 “I’m still under the psychiatrist’s tr. and hope he is benefitting me. He thinks my trouble is curable and I earnestly hope he thinks right. I am praying that HE will show us the way.”

R21. 10/16/32 “Honestly, Brother, you could not begin to realize how much I’ve gained by living at the Beach the few months Mother and Daddy could afford to keep me there. It was all a great pleasure for me and I’d adore to be able to live again with the Cayce family [Cayce-Hesson Nursing Home, run by Miss Annie Cayce and Mrs. Sarah Cayce Hesson.] now, if my parents were financially able to let me do so…

“I did not go to Durham yesterday as usual. Dr. Poate seemed to think a rest would do me good. He wants me to get away for a while; so, one day soon we girls will take the car and travel to Richmond for about a week’s stay…

“Tuesday morning [10/18/32]…Brother, I am in a predicament. Mother has high blood pressure and is a very nervous, high strung person. Daddy isn’t making any money and I don’t think either of them are very much pleased with my condition. Nor do I think they believe Dr. Poate has helped me a great deal. Personally I like him and am willing to give the man a fair trial which I think he hasn’t had up till this time. You see, some things he would want me to try and Mother would think it too hard on me, so she’d write Dr. Poate and I’d have to go back on medicine. We would have to pacify Mother. Brother, don’t you understand?

“Daddy seems to think that Dr. James’ medicine would, will do the work. He hasn’t talked this matter over with anyone but me. I am perfectly willing to take whatever my parents wish me to. I know that the proper or the right step for me would be to get back to the readings.

“I wish you would advise me what you believe the thing to do and write it to me as early a date as possible.”

R22. 10/21/32 EC’s letter: “I was very glad to have yours of the 16th, as I am always glad to hear from you. Quite often I think of you, and you may be sure that I hold you in meditation - as do all the rest; we keep you in mind when we are trying to bring the consciousness of His healing power into the hearts and souls of those who have sought, or are seeking, aid or understanding through any of these channels.

“Yes, Pa has been getting along very well since his return. He has a little cold, but is holding his own against it; and I think is doing very good. You no doubt have heard from him about our new place. I think we pointed it out to you, right across the lake from the place we were living when you were here. We like it very much. Of course, there is a great deal to be desired, to make it a more liveable place outside, but it is very comfortable inside, and I think is fairly well arranged. My office is on the first floor; I can look out one window and see the lake, while looking out another I can see the ocean.

“Miss Gladys, Mildred and Hugh Lynn have an office upstairs, and sometimes when all three typewriters are going at once it sounds very much like a business office; otherwise, it is all very good. Our living room is very much like the one on 35th Street, save the entrance to the house is on the side into a hall, and the living room is in front, which makes it quite a bit larger in size. We have a nice fireplace, and one of our good friends in the country has been kind enough to send us some wood, so that these cool evenings we get a great deal of pleasure out of sitting around the fire, especially on Thursday evenings. Miss Gladys led the last meeting, and the different subjects were handled very well by most, and were both instructive and entertaining to all.

“Gertrude is very well. Edgar Evans is now going to Oceana High school, the first time for many years that he has been in a large public school. This makes quite a difference, but I think he likes it. He and Hugh Lynn are very much worked up about their Boy Scout activities, and they are to have this week-end one of the largest camps of Boy Scouts that has ever been gotten together at one time or place. I hope everything goes off in nice shape. Hugh Lynn has been made Assistant Scout Master, Mr. Eastman (the Episcopal minister) being the Scout Master. They have quite a flock of boys - I guess that’s a good name to call them, flock or herd I don’t know which.

“I know just what a time your father has had in meeting conditions during these depressing times. I hope I am not being self-centered, or trying to glory in the undertakings here, but I have always felt, [543], that you were really doing a great deal better just about the time you left here than you had at any time since I had known you. I have wondered and wondered just how it was, or why it was, that it wasn’t possible for you to keep on for another five or six months, at least. I do not mean to imply that I feel this information at all times surpasses any other mode or means, but I do feel that in the lives of some individuals it comes to mean a great deal more than anything else would ever possibly be, and I think it is something like that in your case. I’m sure, as you recognize within yourself, there was a large portion of the time that you did not get within your inner self just what this was all about, but when the awakening did come why it awoke something within you that made the determination to do more for yourself than had ever been accomplished before. I have been hoping, though, that the trips to Durham will give the doctor there a chance to find just what would be the thing to remove this condition entirely. From what you say in your Tuesday morning letter, I am feeling that possibly this is not the way. I hate to think of you becoming wholly dependent on Dr. James’ medicine, but of all the individual things where medicine is concerned, that no doubt is one of the very best, provided you are able to take just as little as possible and depend more and more on your prayer and meditation; for [543], YOU know, I am sure, that He IS able to heal, if you will be willing to put your wants, weaknesses, desires of every kind, wholly within his keeping and not yourself. If conditions do not permit anything else, I would take Dr. James’ treatments, but you control the amount - don’t let it control you.

“Know that we are always praying for you, and hoping that when you do get the opportunity you will come by and see us for a little while. If you get up to Richmond, it won’t be a great deal out of your way to come by here - or will it?

“I’m certainly sorry that your mother is having trouble. [543], there is one almost sure cure for such conditions as your mother is threatened with at present; that is, some chiropractic adjustments and high colonic irrigations. This will bring that down to normal in less than a month, if she will do it. That’s the basis of it with her, as it is with ninety percent of people where it first begins, by infection from the colon and lack of proper adjustment in the sacral and upper dorsal area. See if you can’t get her to do that.

“Drop us a line whenever you can. With love from all to you and yours, I am…”

R23. 5/5/33 Letter from Colony, Va. [Nursing or rest home near Lynchburg]: “My story is a very long one and so I shall not relate it. I’ll merely say I’ve been here since the 5th of March and only expect to stay a few weeks longer.

“I am not taking but a small dosage of Luminal, salts twice a week and trying to be most careful about not eating much. I really feel quite fine and dandy nearly all of each day. It is very nice here and those in charge are most pleasant…

“Mother and Daddy realize now that those medicines are not good for me and so I’ve ended the taking of them for good, I trust. I hope to have another reading some day when I return home…”

R24. 6/24/33 She wrote, back home again, that her parents had consented for her to start on the Mayblossom Bitters again (as in 543-11), “at least to allow me to give it a trial for a time.”

R25. 7/6/33 “If you have [1001]‘s or his daddy’s address, won’t you please write it to me when you answer this letter?” [He was the young man at the Cayce Hospital while she was there, also an epileptic. EC did NOT answer that part of her letter in replying.]

R26. 7/8/33 Mother’s letter: “May I ask please that I take you in my confidence and not let [543] know that I have written to ask that you do not send the Mayblossom Bitters any time soon. You can have a good excuse in saying that the summer has been so dry that it was difficult in securing the blooms. We are trying her on nothing but the Luminal, and she has in the past week shown marked improvement, so that we are anxious for her to take nothing else for a while.

“She goes into meditation every day at 11:30, and I pray with her, not in the same room for she goes to herself.

“Her beautiful attitude to life and to people, I feel, is due solely to you. Your beautiful Christian life has set her a wonderful example, and she believes fully in you.”

R27. 8/1/33 “Lately I have had some very hard seizures, and I hope and pray it will not be long before you can have some Bitters made up for me and send them, so I can start taking it again.”

R28. 1/15/34 “Sometimes I cannot have meditation as I would like, because that is about the only convenient time my family can walk with me in the country. They do not let me go anywhere alone, even in the neighborhood and Mother likes for me to have a walk each day. Of course, Brother, I know their not wanting me to go anywhere alone is because of their love and anxiousness for me, but I do not seem to be able to overcome it’s making me nervous, to some degree. That feeling of having somebody watch you all of the time is not such a pleasant one anyhow. I have had many a fall this past year and the Monday before Xmas I fell against the radiator and badly cut my head. It has just healed this week, enough to let me shampoo my hair. I do wish I could follow the suggestions [in the readings] exactly…

“Could you give me a ck. physical rdg. sometime in the next few weeks?”

R29. 2/3/34 She wrote asking EC if she could come and board, using a little money of her own, without her family having to sacrifice. “Things are not going well with me, neither am I in very good health. But I want to get well and I just can’t do it at home the way things are here.”

R30. 2/10/34 EC replied that it was impossible, since Miss Annie Cayce and Mrs. Hesson had moved back to Nashville, Tenn.

R31. 2/24/34 “When can you give me a physical rdg.? I have some questions I would like to send you if you can soon give me one. “Mother has heard about a tr. called ‘Renesol’ which she and the other members are most anxious for me to begin, as my attacks seem to be harder lately than usual. I had much rather try just the Bitters [as advised in 543-11], as the readings suggest, but you realize my predicament, and it isn’t the most pleasant one I’ve had either, Brother. Consequently I’ll just have to do the next best. At present I’m taking a small amount of Luminal and a laxative every night, excepting the night before I take a dose of Epsom Salts.”

R32. 3/29/34 She wrote enclosing the above letter, saying “I believe you understand how sometimes things slip my mind.”

R33. 4/24/34 Mother’s letter: “[543] wishes to take the Mayblossom Bitters again, so if you can send her what she should take I will appreciate it. She takes Luminal in the morning and again in the afternoon, and if she goes out in the evening she takes one-half tablet.”
