This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his office, 115 West 35th Street, Virginia Beach, Va., this 5th day of September, 1928, in accordance with request made by self - Mr. [900].
[Edgar Cayce; Mrs. Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. Mr. L. B. Cayce.]
Time of Reading 10:30 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. Deal, N.J. (Dream Suggestion)
-
EC: We have the body, the enquiring mind, [900] - this we have had before. The dreams come through those channels as have been outlined for the body, and may be applied in the ways and manners as have been indicated. Ready for dream.
-
(Q) Night of Sept. 2nd, and also several times before. Seemed Gary was speaking to me. “Watch Mack Truck - It’s a buy!” Then he gave me the numbers 89, 220. “Buy it on the slump.” (A) This, as indicated, that the body should watch this special stock for the changes in proportions as seen will occur, and - as given - buy on the slump, or changes as occur. Not for long holds, but for the quick returns as come in same. Then as the forces applied come in activity, so will the body make the change, see?
-
(Q) Morning of recent date. Saw thousand shares of Fleischman, selling at 76 and 76 1/2. I was told, “Very, very bullish on this here.” (A) The indication of the changes in this special commodity, and with the general rises these will show the change, and this AGAIN shows that of the small amounts that may be made, unless in quick changes.
-
(Q) When may the next upward move of any consequence in Fleischman be expected? (A) In the present period of rise.
-
(Q) Afternoon of Sept. 1st. Went through each stock that I hold for myself, [195], and [257]. That is, went over each one individually, one by one. The most outstanding one seemed to be Westinghouse 115. Then went to Chrysler, General Motors, Packard - each one of the stocks I hold for myself and for these other individuals. Radio, etc. (A) Rather the correlation of those experiences for self and others in the security of those being held in the present rise; yet, as indicated in the fact of being sure of their being in place, that these should not be held for too high or too wide margin, but rather be on the lookout for sudden changes that may occur from various and varied conditions as seen in this outward appearance of high market, yet constantly within that fear of some sudden precipitation, see?
-
(Q) Are these stocks in line for further upward move? (A) In line, as has been seen - yet, as given, do not hold for too high; for there will be sudden changes in these, as with others.
-
(Q) Information has been given to me and others regarding Sears-Roebuck. It has been given to me through physical sources to the extent that liquidation is coming in from Chicago on this stock. That has been given me. If this is true - (A) As has been given as respecting this special stock, there soon is to be the division in this special stock, for that of financing other expenditures and for the spreading of the business itself in an expansive manner. Hence, as given, these well to buy and put away; for with divisions, while these will give in form of bonus those of other stocks that will again rise and rise. Hence that is the manner in which this liquidation or change is to come about. Be mindful, and these will prove helpful. We are through for the present.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 9/5/28 Ltr. from EC to Mr. [900]:
Dear [900]:-
Looks like I haven’t had a chance to write you. I kept thinking every day that I would. How I don’t know whether I know this morning what I want to say or not. Possibly we are all more of us Quakers than we know. I believe Mr. Hoover [Herbert Hoover] is a Quaker.
I’m mighty sorry that anything came up to mar the association or connection when [257] was here. Doubly so that he should feel that there was nothing said about it until after he had left, and then wanted to in any way blame you with that portion of my actions or activities towards answering his request for aid through the sources. [257], from days of old though (and apparently he can’t seem to get away from some of those), is always desirous of getting me off to himself where he can take the readings and do the writing himself, and ask whatever he wants. Naturally, when there has been a decided way in which the work has been conducted, this would cause dissatisfaction - and it should; for they (the readings) are no longer being conducted along the lines as there were ten or fifteen years ago. But that’s neither here nor there. I just hope it will straighten itself out alright. The discussion seemed to have come up from Hugh Lynn’s talk with [257], of which I know little or nothing. In fact, didn’t know anything about it until after Hugh Lynn was in New York and [257] had gone - but when I had the note from Hugh Lynn telling me that from circumstances it would possibly be impossible for him to attend school on account of his own misunderstanding, or mis-application of what he thought was right, naturally I was a little bit up in the air [See 900-406, Par. B1]. Not that I expect (nor have I been expecting) for you or [195], or both of you and [257], to contribute to the educating of my son; whose duty it should be to attend to this education myself - but I had been in hopes that I would be able to gain sufficient worldly means from the work we have been trying to do to enable me to carry out some of the duties that I owe my family. It’s not an easy thing for me, [900], to sit back and wait - wait - expecting this, that or the other to happen, when I know that I ought to be able to attend to the duties that come to everyone that brings children into the world. But it IS wonderful to know that you and [195] are willing to help the boy along at this time. I BELIEVE he is deserving. Not that I count myself deserving for the signal honor you bestow upon him by contributing to his education, or LENDING
- for I rather feel abased that such things have to be necessary, and know that from the material viewpoint I’m a failure.
Now, when we turn to another side of the picture - that is, about [165]‘s entrance, we might say, into the picture - I would love to talk to you about this. Possibly it is best not to try to express it under the present conditions and surroundings, for - as we all here feel - that is the real basis of the feelings that arose, not only with [257] but with his wife, at the attitude that [165] took toward Hugh Lynn, the family, and the work itself. So, when I have the opportunity to talk to you about it I want to do it, and I want to see the opportunity for you and [165] to get together. We here could possibly understand why it said in the reading [254-43, Par. 9-A] YOU were the one to talk with [165], while possibly [257] would be the one to work with him from another viewpoint, or at another time or place; for [165]‘s a big man unless I’m mighty, mighty, badly fooled, and will be a wonderful help to us where possibly it would be hard for EVEN [257] to interest people. [165-5?]
[195]‘s letter the other day, and drawing - I believe, from what they all say about it, that we got just what [195] will want this time. I think he’s very near to solving his problem of what is necessary to make the thing work [See [4665] Motor series]. At least I hope its so.
Mrs. [2710] has been in to see us several times. The weather has been so bad the last day or two we haven’t been in touch with her. Miss [2913] had a physical reading. Also Mrs. [2710]. And Miss [2913] was desirous of having a Life Reading. Miss Stone and Mrs. [2710] went up and went over the building - seemed to be very enthusiastic about the whole work. Miss [2913] wasn’t with them at the time we went over it. She’s very desirous though of seeing it. Had a very nice note from Mr. [2709] yesterday, in which he said that if we will be just a little patient with him he will have a nice substantial contribution for the hospital. I don’t know what this means, or what he’s talking about.
Certainly a very nice layout that Miss [302] contemplates for the reception hall. It will be full to overflowing I’m sure. I’m sure again, though, she has planned just how this should be arranged, and I’m in hopes that she will let me know some of her ideas concerning same.
We have received the other tablet or marker that goes in front. I think the 11th of November a very good day, if satisfactory to most of the trustees. I believe it would be well - or what do you think of having the two bottom markers set, so that it would not be such a long ceremony or work when we hold our exercise for the setting up of the other marker? or had we best leave it and have them all put in at once? Of course we will have to make a very definite decision as to date, so that we can have the mason on hand to do the work.
[257] was very anxious for me to come to Asheville - said there were some people there he wanted me to meet, as well as some I had already met. He tried to get a reading while he was here for a man whom he claimed had given him application for a membership, but the reading refused to give anything. Later when we wired the man to know if he desired the reading, and asked him about making the appointment, he didn’t answer. [257] did the same thing again in Asheville. This time I simply asked that the individual request the reading by letter or card. I know this only added fuel to a fire already, but there certainly is no necessity of our making more trouble, when we already have a lot on hand, though it may aggrafret [a pet word of EC’s - combining aggravate and fret] him at this time. My father is not well at all. He has taken a very deep cold. With his condition this is rather serious, though we haven’t had opportunity to get a reading. Trying to use just what has been given for the conditions, but we may have to do this at any time - unless his condition shows improvement. So, if we hadn’t had these special readings on hand, if for nothing else, I don’t see how I could be away at this time - and naturally there are so many questions that come up at the building; but with the wires, personal requests, and conditions, it would have been bad had I been away the first part of this week I know, and it would have worried a whole lot of people. I’m certainly glad, so far, that I didn’t go.
I certainly hope that [137] [See 137-112] is feeling a whole lot better. I don’t figure that these little capsules will tend to make him feel very good for a day or two, but I’m sure they will prevent something else arising that might, unless precaution is taken at this time. We got your reading this morning and mailed it special. I’m in hopes it helps out.
Let us hear from you whenever you have the opportunity. Know we are always glad to hear.
With kindest personal regards from all to you and yours,
Ever the same, [Edgar Cayce]
R2. 9/6/28 [900]‘s ltr. to EC:
Mr. Edgar Cayce 35th Street Virginia Beach, Va.
Dear Edgar:
Enclosed please fine
400 being [137]'s and my monthly contribution, this together with [195]'s200 and [257]‘s100 should cover the700 necessary for salaries, although I note on your report you have800.00 charged to salaries. My figure of700 includes200 for yourself,400 to the doctor and100 to [[Gladys Davis|Gladys]]. Am I correct or in error? I discussed the matter with [195] and we felt that if we could raise this700 between the three of us, [137], [195] and myself, that it would totally cover all salaries and that the amount you take in for making the reports should cover stationery, stamps and incidental expenses of the Association, leaving a small surplus for the bank account or treasury. What do you think of our method of computation? With regard to the mailing list, Miss [302] says she received Miss Gladys’ mailing list on which there were 1160 names. After erasing from the list approximately 100 names for return mail due to people who had died or who could not be found, there were left about 1055 names. On your report the mailing list numbers 1766 names, which would mean that Miss Gladys has about 600 or 700 names that have not been submitted to Miss [302]. Will you kindly find out about this. Again, on the membership list Miss [302] claims, according to her membership list, there are 150 names and in order to correct this I would advise Miss Gladys to sent Miss [302] the list of members that she has officially on record and then Miss [302] can see what names she has on the list in error; for she has taken the names from those Miss Gladys has sent. I, myself, was under the impression that the membership list was closer to 200 than this and, of course, I mean members we have included, such as [2711], whether they have paid or not.
With regard to the bills due October 15th, is the
533.33 due S. M. Stubbs on the lots [[A.R.E. (Association for Research and Enlightenment)|the Association]] owns? What is the350 due the construction company for? As I understand it the Association has outright the four lots on which the building is being constructed and has yet to complete payment on the remaining six lots. Does this $883.33 pertain to payment of these six lots? If it does what remains yet to be paid and how much odes it amount to? If it does not, just what do each of these items represent? Please do not misunderstand my questioning but I want to take these matters up in detail with [137] and [195] and I believe I should have that information so as to make definitely clear to them exactly what we are doing and what we are spending money for and furthermore, I should like to have in my own mind the exact record with respect to our mailing list and membership. In order that plans that I turn over in my mind and take up with others may have definite and sure facts for a background, I should like to have this information. It is for this reason and this reason only that I am seeking to straighten myself out on these matters.
With regard to Hugh Lynn’s money, I will sent it tomorrow, Friday, such that he should receive it Saturday and will write him a letter at the same time.
Assuring you both [137] and I appreciate your efforts and the service you have rendered us and thanking you kindly for same, I remain with kindest personal regards to yourself and family.
Sincerely yours, [900]
R3. GD’s note: 9/6/28 Correspondence through 10/10/28 indicates a canker sore which, although glossed over, apparently grew and was the cause of the break two years later, resulting in the closing of the Cayce Hospital (dedicated on 11/11/28) and the dissolving of the Association of National Investigators, Inc.
R4. 9/8/28 [900]‘s ltr. to EC:
The Berkeley-Carteret Asbury Park, N.J.
Mr. Edgar Cayce, 35th Street, Virginia Beach, Va.
Dear Edgar:
I have been so rushed, as Hugh Lynn probably told you, that I have not had the chance to reply to your very considerate letter of September 5th. Coupled with this, I have been suffering with a nasty cold that sometimes seems to get the better of me, so please pardon the delay.
With regard to that part of your letter that concerns [257] in relation to yourself and the work, I have often tried to make this clear by saying that [257] has not as yet gotten the whole concept of what we are trying to do, and of the fact that we are trying to systematize and organize the work rather than keep it on the haphazard basis it has been in the past. The explanation of this, and of the less understandable fact that you consent to [257]‘s methods, (note I do not say [257]‘s requests, but [257]‘s methods), I believe was fairly well explained in my last communication to you. I knew something like this would occur and it will occur again, until the methods by which your reports are furnished are entirely consistent with the purpose of the whole organization rather than with any individual purpose that some one person may have or some one desire to fulfill for his own individual self. It is a very fine line of difference and it would be and will be terribly hard for the layman to understand; but I am sure, you, who must understand well by experience, get what I mean. It has been given so often in my own reports or in common parlance I have been bawled out, for not myself being consistent in that very thing. The point then being that I am trying to be an example of an expression of the universal forces, whether in business, in scientific work, in Virginia Beach, in social life or what not and I am trying to be this whether it pertains to phenomena gained for or by myself through myself or through you. If, however, I merely seek a report from you that helps me make a few dollars that I may enjoy greater wealth, then I am separating completely the material from the spiritual and not fulfilling the purpose of the work, which is to prove all of life, one life - all of space, one space - all of time, one time - all one, one, one, altho different in form. [257] does not understand this and since he does not understand, is not to be blamed. I believe he has a heart of gold and means well, but for all this until [257] does understand, he is decidedly not the one to steer the course that our organization shall pursue nor the one to lay down the method, from the physical side I am talking about now, by which the reports shall be taken.
There was a time when I would have and actually did fight with [257]. I know now however, that events will of themselves so shape themselves as to bring the work under the control of those of us who understand best it’s meaning and purpose in terms of the ideal. If I could win the confidence of the rest of the board, and I will in time, as I have won [195] and [2694] I doubt if I will have little trouble. [257] presents a hard problem but however rebellious he may become, like the moth and the candle light, he will always come back regardless of his blow-offs. I do not want to boss, frankly because I cannot if I want to; but as I have won [195] I hope I may win you to compel [257] to be consistent in his methods despite the fact that he does not understand why those methods should be employed.
The Hugh Lynn-[257] affair is merely, to my mind, another phase of the same thing only showing that [257] does not understand the oneness more the wholeness of our purpose and purport. Regardless of the personal element and of your own personal relationship to [257], the chief factor as I see it is not that Cayce asked [257] a favor which he refused, but that he was asked by anyone for aid that he might and could have rendered, and refused. However, life teaches it’s own lessons and [257] will learn his all within the element calle time.
As for Hugh Lynn’s education, personally here I can understand [257]‘s viewpoint. To put the shoe on the other foot, I recall that I went one year to college and then my father made me work my second year through college. He simply refused to pay the second years tuition though he could well afford it because he believed the work would do me more good. So in the day time I waited behind a counter in a Pittsburgh store and at night shuffled through snow, because I did not have the car fare to ride, to the University of Pittsburgh where I got credit for three subjects at night. I believe my father was right and I am happy that I could have the opportunity of taking the reins in my own hands and showing spunk enough to meet the problem for myself in my own way without leaning back upon my father. If my own son does not take the same stand, and I shall expect him to, he will get no college education from me and I shall be much disappointed. I believe that [257] wanted some such expression from Hugh Lynn. I am not in any way criticizing Hugh Lynn but both Sugrue and Hugh Lynn must learn just what I have had to learn for the past three years since I have been associated with the work namely that no matter how much one pours over books, (and I broke my health down pouring over them until the wee hours of the morning) all such study is worthless unless it is accompanied by active application, or in plain words hard work that reaps of ideas formed in the mind self-realization of their workable quality. If God had retained in his mind the idea of man and not through ages of effort applied himself to bring man into being, the latter would have ever remained an idea in the mind of the creator and never become a created realization for the creator. Hard work goes along with hard study and it will not hurt anyone. However, I feel that in Hugh Lynn’s particular case a college education will prove most worthwhile due to his particular type of mind, and if he is happy in the university he is attending at the present time, to me it would be a shabby trick to even try to persuade him to change. The problem of hard work will still confront him when he is out of school. But, the point I am driving at and that I am going to make clear to Hugh Lynn in my letters to him at college, is that it is his own application and hard work that will win him a place in the world, whether it is in the world of science (that is, our work at Virginia Beach) or in the professional world or what not, rather than any organization itself that he may rely upon, whether it is our organization or any other. Satisfaction, gratification and pleasure may come to those of more mature years by study of past development in this plain, and by more mature years, I mean that that has been given in one of my own reports for a man in the fifties or sixties, for example. Better knowledge of how to apply oneself by study of these past experiences is the value of knowledge of these past experiences to a young man such as myself and Hugh Lynn; but it is not what we were in the past but what we do right now that makes us what we are to be in the immediate or distant future, in this world or any other. Knowledge of the past may help us in our present application but it is the latter that does the trick, for the past has reaped it’s own fruits and it is the present that will enlarge upon the crop; or strip the tree bare and make it barren. It is this I would like to make Hugh Lynn understand in his study of these past experiences. He must not rely on his kingship of the past that bears fruit in his present fine character and his sterling qualities, but can only rely upon what he makes of himself now for anything he is to become in this world or in any other world. For the past may be undone or it may be added to according to our own voluntary present application.
As regards yourself in this matter, I do not believe you take the right attitude and I cannot blame you for this, yet if you will but consider the past and it’s relationship to the present I believe the whole thing will be clear to you. The service you render the world is a necessary one from the spiritual viewpoint. You have fitted yourself to render this service and from your own spiritual viewpoint you chose to render this service. Yet when you entered this plain to carry out what you developed to become able to do, you find to achieve this spiritual purpose in a material world there is no material reward. So bitter indeed have been your days upon earth; and though it has caused hardship to your wife, if I understand the past correctly and to a certain extent I believe I do, that she suffers by your side that this necessary work in a temporary phase of creation be performed, is for her own best development and in a speculative way I might say a necessary condition to her further development. Or to put it differently, I do believe that if by any chance or accident great wealth had come to her she might have to return again to gain that absolutely necessary for her greater spiritual development. I know this may not seem rational or logical and might even be thrown out by her, yet is the meaning, I believe, of an eye for and eye, a tooth for a tooth. However, that which was once undone must be again accomplished and it is a privilege and a blessing that those who partook once before of the work, are able again to partake in it and prove themselves to be capable and developed for this ability to create, that such service rendered develops in each and everyone.
You render a spiritual service in a material world for which a material world will not pay in terms of material exchange or money. How far then is the work you do from that which the Master did? I am not saying that you are not entitled to that which an understanding organization should pay and will as soon as it can pay; but I do say that you have no cause to condemn yourself nor to think yourself a failure. If you are a failure, then so am I, for instead of taking advantage of my position to pile up money that I am in a position to do, I am trying to give all that is possible to a work that appears to me to be the nearest thing to a work of Christ that has ever been performed in the world since He walked the face of this globe. Therefore, when they say why does that fool give away when he has not enough to even carry on in a material way such as those in the same field of endeavor do; I merely keep my peace but do not for one minute consider myself in anyway abased or a failure. You are not a failure, but performing a service that shall not only prove a blessing to the world and that shall not only earn the gratitude of coming generations, but that shall prove an everlasting glory to your everlasting mind and consciousness and which service, if you refused or neglected to perform would render your spirit consciousness, self-condemnatory to a degree that would be Hell indeed.
As regards Hugh Lynn and the boys, time, effort and proper application will work all out for everyone. True, it is hard for you not to have the pleasure of being the provider you would want to be, but this too may come as we progress, and come for that matter, quite suddenly. If I have any knowledge of human nature at all I really believe there is that in Hugh Lynn’s nature that makes it better that he be forced to apply himself rather than take those lines he chooses as most likable in study and research. Not that he may not come to this and should not do it, but I think it will be best for him, and I sincerely advise that you fulfill your own original plan which was to make him work a year before he went to school [GD’s note: He did this between high school and first year of college [Salesman with F. A. Van Patten, Real Estate Broker, Va. Beach, Va.]. Mr. [900] couldn’t be thinking straight on this to have forgotten such an important item with which he was perfectly familiar at the time.], compelling him to work physically and mentally for his own good; I am sure it will make a bigger and better man of him and I talk now exactly as I would act if my own were grown and exactly as my father acted with regard to me. Books play an important part in mental development, but it is only experience that turns theory into fact, dreams into self realization of their materializations and knowledge into wisdom or truth. You agree with me, I’m sure that in the last analysis, experience is the best and only truth revealing teacher.
Returning to yourself, as the sun sets I am sure it’s glow will make your life beautiful, and understanding what you have done and that for which you and your family has been made to suffer, will bring to you a quality of happiness that will be wholly acceptable to you. As the curtain rings down I am sure you will feel the glory of service to God, and say as did Jefferson “Now O Lord let thy Servant depart in peace”. Your peace shall not be destroyed by a conscience that pricks for a service capable of being rendered but neglected for a duty left unperformed. Sneers and criticisms will find no ears and you will experience what He meant when He put into words saying “Blessed are the poor for they shall inherit the Earth. Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the Kingdom of Heaven.”
Regarding [165] and [953], I am not much worried and if I can sort of work the thing around, I think we’ll have them with us. This never did worry me any more than did the other problems when we were much further down the ladder in the progress of our work; or probably Hugh Lynn expressed it better when he said, “the atmosphere seemed to change and problems become smaller when I left Virginia Beach”. This is not a compliment to myself; simply that I am determined to let no problem appear so big in my mind as to eclipse the goal upon which I have my eyes fixed.
I know [195] will get the machine [[4665] motor]. It is peculiar how all things seem to correlate and it does seem almost startling how a small one as I was, should be brought so close even to the right hand of power, as power is expressed in this material world. Here again we’ll have a great achievement that will bring us great material power, and it will be interesting to watch not only other’s reactions but to prove our own metal in the method in which we shall apply the power we achieve, towards the one end and for one purpose that we all seek.
I thoroughly trust advantageous results come through Mrs. [2710]‘s visit and it is too bad that the hospital is not ready to receive the man [3969].
[137] seems much better since taking your treatment and I myself took what was given in a previous report last night, and it seems to have helped me considerably. We both thank you and trust you and your family are well. With kindest personal regards to yourself and to your family, in which [137] joins me, I remain
Yours sincerely, [900]
R5. 9/10/28 He obtained a Physical Rdg. for Miss [302].
R6. 9/11-12/28 See Mr. [900]‘s Ck. Physical rdgs. 900-407 and 900-408.
R7. 9/13/28 EC’s letter to Mr. [900]:
Dear [900]:-
I have yours of the 6th, also of the 8th. I wish it were so that I might sit down and talk with you concerning these matters, rather than undertaking to write. Often we are misunderstood, for we don’t always find the words to describe just what we feel, or that we intend to convey to the other person when we write.
I have often wondered which was the most wearing on an individual’s mental self; to find that he is wholly misunderstood or to feel his goodness is being willfully taken advantage of by one who should, by all rights, be more considerate.
Now respecting the checks: I received yours for
400, [195]'s200, [257]‘s100. This, as understood, covers the salaries for each month. It is true the report showed800 paid as salaries last month. It was I who drew the extra hundred. Possibly this should have been noted in the report. Hereafter, the amounts will be noted and to whom they are paid. Possibly I should have asked whether I would be allowed to do this or not. If I have committed an error, then I am sorry - but it would be well for the Board to flatly tell me that I must not. We try to keep down expense. We realize we have very little to spend, but to keep up our household it can’t be done on two hundred dollars a month, with other expenses. The salaries for a portion of the work is supposed to include living expense. I can’t take care of it out of my own altogether. I do my best, or think I do. If I have failed I can’t help it. I had gotten behind and it was necessary that I have the extra to take care of these bills. As you well know, there have been many times when people have asked that their contributions be personal, rather than letting them go through the Association. I have tried, and do try, to keep away from this as much as possible, and have insisted that they make their contributions to the Association and not to me personally. Had I taken such a contribution recently (and I was asked not to let it go through the channels) I would not have had to draw this amount at this time. Your method of computation is correct, [900], but the method of condemnation doesn’t sound just right. Now regarding the mailing lists: These have been kept in order. They have been reported to you and to Miss [302] in order. We are aware that we have a list that we have not submitted to Miss [302]. In fact we were asked to submit a special list, not our whole mailing list; for in the office here there are names on the list that we know, or at least have an idea, the phase of the phenomena or work in which they are interested. They have never been contributors, have never asked for data, have never communicated with this office. Yet we know from other sources of their interest, and we find - from time to time - some of these respond to that which we send them. Especially have we found this so when we sent your lecture. Not a great many, it’s true. However, this is why our mailing list outnumbers the list Miss [302] may have. Another thing - we have letters and requests from individuals who go on our mailing list. We send them data and information - then possibly it’s a year, maybe never, before we hear from them again. We don’t think Miss [302] would care to have such names on her list. Do you? Hence the difference.
As to memberships: The number reported, if you will follow up your reports, includes only those under the classification of the Association who have actually paid in cash their entrance fee to the Association. There are quite a number that are contributors. Their contributions not having amounted to the full amount of a membership, their names have been included as contributing members. Such as Professor [2711] and others. Hence the variation in this part of the report. Whenever one has paid a membership we immediately report their names, but we have found - such as we had from the lady in Pittsburgh - that if there was the immediate call for contributions, as she expressed it in her letter, (that you asked me to answer) “The yell for money came so quickly after my reading that I have lost faith in the reading and in the whole thing, and fear it is only a money grabbing scheme”. She, in a subsequent letter - as some others have expressed themselves also - said, she believed in Mr. Cayce’s work but did not believe in the Association if it conducted its affairs on that basis. I know, [900], we do our level best to keep things straight. Different conditions necessitate a different mode of action, to our minds. But we try to present them in an honest way. If our manner of presenting them is not correct, please inform us just how they should BE presented.
Now regarding the bills due October 15th: Your surmise is correct. The
533.33 with interest due Stubbe is on the five lots fronting on the boulevard and just back of same. The350 with interest due the Construction Co. is on the one lot directly in front of the lot on which the building is being put, and faces on 105th Street [GD’s note: Later the streets were renumbered and 105th Street became 67th Street]. The lots on which the building is being erected are all paid for; receipts, notes, and all in hand. We have tried to carry these things forward, not to burden you with detail but as far as possible to lay before you each month the operations of this office in detail. We not only want to keep this office in correct shape, but we don’t want even a question mark after any act of anyone in this office. I don’t pretend to know even the rudiments of good business. I believe I know the rudiments of presenting a thing as it exists. The enclosed statements will give the transaction on these lots, so that you can see the whole matter at a glance.Possibly I don’t understand yours of the 8th well enough to attempt to answer it. I don’t know just what you intend to convey to my mind when you say, “You consent to [257]‘s method of approach to others”. I realize we have a great undertaking here. I realize also that you assumed a very large responsibility, as the head officer of the association, in trying to present to the public a question that in many minds is already taboo. I realize too the necessity of whole-hearted cooperation if this is to be made a success, and especially of each and everyone through whom the information may be obtained, and you and your ideas and ideals in presenting this to the public with these individuals especially must be one. However, what a doctor said many years ago is possibly true, that I am wise enough when I’m asleep but I’m such a damn fool when I’m awake it’s hard to get along with me.
Neither do I understand, [900], what you meant by saying “Until the method by which your reports are furnished is entirely consistent with the purpose of the whole organization”. I wish you would define this for me. This is the first intimation I have had that it was all wrong. Suppose we make this constructive criticism. For what I get is this: You feel that I am trying to further my own individual idea, and that I consistently and continually allow myself to be used for individual purposes other than that that is consistent with the ideals of the Association. It doesn’t appear a fine line to me. It looks like an awful gap. For I know I wouldn’t willfully, knowingly, do anything that would hinder the work in any sense, or any phase of it. Possibly such long drawn out experience as I have had in arriving at the place the work now occupies has made me physically get an improper slant on things, but materially I am not constituted in such a manner as to be bawled out without knowing what for. Possibly I have been warped by circumstance. Possibly I have depended in a measure upon [257] in straits and circumstances to where I have allowed him to dictate the policies that he would use. But the mere fact that I am still attempting, and not consenting at all times to his methods, and am at least gradually getting away from this, should to my mind count for something - but maybe it doesn’t. For my whole purpose, I am sure within my own mind, even though you may feel that my actions belie the statement, is as sincere in the desire to prove, to demonstrate, the manifested facts as have been and are given in the readings, as anyone in the world. If my constant refusal to be sold into bondage isn’t proof, than I don’t know. Possibly I am failing in the ability to “draw the difference”.
As for Hugh Lynn’s and [257]‘s affair, I can very well understand [257]‘s attitude - and had I known anything concerning what was in Hugh Lynn’s mind even, I would not have allowed him to even present the thing to [257]. In fact, I have persistently attempted to keep Hugh Lynn from appealing to you and [195]. I know I am biased in my idea concerning Hugh Lynn and his mental abilities. I’m afraid, however, that I haven’t been insistent enough on his making MATERIAL application of his PHYSICAL abilities, and I am afraid he will become one-sided - but I lacked so much in my own self along these lines, I have been anxious that he at least have the opportunity, and not as myself - not even finish grammar school. So, he has kept many of his activities along the line of appealing to others from me. I didn’t know anything about this until afterward, and there was an expression given. His idea seemed to be to keep me from worrying over this very phase of conditions, and that he should be able to work it out himself. Just what will come out of it I don’t know. The real clash was not so much between [257] and Hugh Lynn as it was between [257] and [165]. For [165] sided WITH Hugh Lynn, and [257] - attempting to justify himself and his methods - ran into a stone wall when he said something to [165]; for that man’s methods must be CLEAN - or I don’t know human nature!
I don’t think that Hugh Lynn relies on his kingship of the past, but is really humbled by the knowledge that his application of self in the material world has been such that this should be his position, to require that he appeal to others, rather than being able to counsel or dictate to others, as he must have had the authority to do at that time.
I don’t know that I have fitted myself for the service that I am trying to render, from any viewpoint. I seek to be shown continually, but I at times approach the same position in which David of old found himself. It was not mete that any but the consecrated approach the Holy of Holies, much less eat of the bread of that table; yet his circumstances - even though he was the anointed of the Lord, and the chosen one, and the one whom it was said of as no other, “A man after mine own heart” - were such that he entered the Holy of Holies, partook of the shew bread - not only to sustain his own life but that of his followers - and it was not counted to him as unrighteousness.
Now, as regarding my wife’s interest, her part and her place in the work: As we know, and as is thoroughly demonstrated, there is always necessary a three-sided concept of ANY question, at least. Even as the Father, the Son, the Holy Ghost. This holds good throughout creation. Or there is the object, the cause, and the effect. Cause, effect, result. All work in this manner. The same exists in THIS phenomena. The subject, the interrogator, the scribe. Now, it was hard for her to ever conceive of giving her whole self to the work
- but when she did, she felt that she had a greater interest, naturally, in my own physical welfare through such experiences than anyone else. Yet has anyone ever stopped to question or consider her feelings when they desired to obtain information? Yet that’s her place, and her part of the work. She gives that much of herself, and if it’s kept up it’s necessary that it be a continual, persistent, consistent thing. Many things have to be foregone that others may have the advantage of that time that must be given. You may be right in your speculation. I have often thought so myself. BUT, there are other sides to consider! [900]. Its necessary, I’m sure, that she suffer along with me for those very things that we considered; not others, but ourselves. Now we must consider others, not ourselves. But OTHERS must be considerate also. There is more than one side to it. As I have often said, the greatest pay that has ever been given me for any service rendered has been “Thank You”. For I know, from experience of years, it would be self-condemnation not to TRY to help when others ask me. If (of course the provision comes in) they are in the attitude of really seeking aid and not seeking to condemn, that’s the only consideration that I see that I have to make; and it would make a hell indeed for me not to be able to do this. That is the one thing I think my wife has gained, and she is willing to forego the pleasures of material position - stand rather as one giving self, rather than claiming for self a position in material affairs among peoples; which desire constantly calls for gratification - even as any habit in the material world might. Naturally it causes clashes. But consistent cooperative measures of those that KNOW that all is one, and one is all - may be just a dream, but it works mighty often in even material things!
I assure you I often have to live in that world many of the enthusiastic theologians build, else life at times would be indeed intolerable. If it wasn’t that almost every day SOMEONE, in some walk of life, says “Thank You” to me for a service ATTEMPTED to be rendered, at least, life would indeed be intolerable. But there’s a vast difference! Indeed I often have to draw apart in the mountain, even from those I would like to serve.
As I said before, I feel almost afraid to remark on what I got from [165]‘s experience here at this last time. I’m just hoping it works out just as we would like.
Yes, I feel that [195] will get the machine [[4665] motor]. All things MUST correlate, whether they be in the material, the mental, or the spiritual world. It is that someone gets one angle, of one or the other of the portions, that prevents them from over correlating - when one goes off at a tangent. It’s just as the mere machine itself. When the elements are combined as to correlate, the machine will work. Impelling forces are needed for such machine when they DON’T combine or correlate.
Just had a letter from [195] yesterday. We are sending him today a reading for [4666]‘s sister [See 5441-1]. Certainly do hope we can be of help. Seems that she has T.B. We will also have one for his baby real soon - a Life Reading.
Certainly am sorry that you had a return of your trouble [See 900-408] such as to necessitate your having to undergo some unpleasant experiences in getting the corrections. I’m in hopes though that you will be able to do this with a minimum amount of suffering and worry. As I said, I had something of this trouble myself - had to have this done a couple of times. Hope you get along alright.
Am looking forward with great anticipation to yours and [137]‘s and [140]‘s coming down. Hope the building will be far enough along to give a clear idea of what it’s going to be like. Am sure it will be by that time. If we hadn’t had such bad weather yesterday, possibly the roof would have been on. They are doing some work on the inside now - closing in some of the things - pouring the basement, etc. Work is going along nicely. Lathers should be in by first of the week, if they can get the plumbing done and the electric wiring in shape enough.
Glad to say we are all pretty well here. My father is feeling a whole lot better, though has a mighty bad cough. Complains of feeling weak and bad.
Let us hear from you when you have the opportunity.
With kindest regards to all,
Ever the same, [Edgar Cayce]
R8. 9/14/28 EC’s letter to HLC:
I enclose you a letter from Mr. [195], which will be of interest no doubt. [900] told me over the phone, as you know, to endorse the check and I enclose you the deposit slip. As you will notice, [195] told him to forward $250 for him. I suppose [900] feels that he knows you don’t need it and will keep it until he sees fit to send it. I received [900]‘s letter, and when I have the answer ready I will send you a copy of what I say - though I hate to worry you with these things. It will be necessary, though, that you have a copy of his letter to me, as well as my reply - for I don’t think you would be able, possibly, to see the connection unless you did have both before you. Don’t let it worry you, however, for we’ll be able to fight it out some way or another.
R9. 9/17/28 EC’s letter to HLC:
I enclose the letters. As I said, don’t worry about them. You’ve got enough to worry about, but I send them that you may know just what the circumstances are. Should any questions arise later on. Possibly I said too much, or may have said the wrong thing. Again, this may be what was meant by the dream I had when I had to punch the “nigger” [negro]. What do you think about it?
Let us hear from you. With love from all.
R10. 9/18/28 Letter from EC to [779]:
…Hugh Lynn and Thomas and Fred Batterson, with another one of Hugh Lynn’s school mates - Tom Sugrue - spent a few days in New York just before they started to school. They are in Washington & Lee again. Hugh Lynn should finish next year if he’s able to manage it. Certainly hope he gets along alright…”
R11. 9/18/28 Mr. [900]‘s letter to EC:
THE HOTEL MARGUERY 270 PARK AVENUE AT 47TH STREET NEW YORK
Dear Edgar:
After reading your letter once, I was truly dizzy or better amazed; after reading it the second time, I was sorry - terribly regretful, for indeed I never meant to hurt you or yours. Yes, I put it in my pipe & smoked it, & it was bitter indeed. The third time I read it, I realized my own tactless choice of words, & your natural inability to know just what I was driving at, just what my ATTITUDE of mind was, since of course you could not put yourself inside my body to feel my thought & know my ideas for yourself, but rather must base your conclusions of my purport & purpose by the representation I make of same in terms of words. How else could anyone judge? Also I agree with you, that anyone else would most naturally have reacted in like manner to the way in which I expressed myself in my letters to you. The words, sentences ETC., undoubtedly sounded very offensive & inconsiderate. I never meant any such lack of consideration or offence to be conveyed to you through my words. However that which I wrote is the past, & sorry as I am if I hurt or in any way offended, I want to assure you no such intent ever existed in my mind to prompt me to convey such to you. The fault is mine & I am very sorry, but I assure it was no fault of intent, but rather one of method.
I never meant by word or deed to bawl you out, & it is much as you told me when, after a reading, I told you I was bawled out in it, you replied “[900], bawled out is the way you put it, but it really is to tell you how you CAN do just what you want to do.” True enough my method, recently has been crude, for which I am truly regretful, & for which there is no excuse, yet I believe you will come to see that, that very method, altho temporarily seeming to make you the goat, will really in the end be the means by which you not only become able to do what YOU want to do, but also get what you desire, even in a material way.
To come right to the point, I wanted you to answer that the extra
100 was an overdrawal of salary by you, (if it was), simply because your present one was simply inadequate to meet the PRESENT necessities of your PRESENT kind of living. That if you were to give your best efforts & best work in behalf of the purpose we seek to accomplish with, by & through our organization, your mind must be free of that anxiety & that pressure that a continuous financially straightened condition naturally entails. I had planned to put this as a part of the business to be considered by the board, & some means devised whereby additional funds might be raised. To meet just such a need I have created the active financial committee [[137] Chm., [195], EC, [257], & [900]] - not to be a watch dog over you, as your letter seems to infer. Let the ORGANIZATION function in a business like, systematic manner as it now is ready to do - not have a condition exist that is a responsibility the board should meet, yet which it does not meet simply because it isn't forced to. Don't you see what I mean, or can't I just get my mind down on paper? I certainly want to, awfully awfully bad, for I want you to understand me. Let me try again & see if my clumsy method of saying a thing may be improved so as to better convey my actual meaning. It no longer is you Cayce & I, [900], trying to do something, but we individually through an organization are seeking a common purpose. If the latter is being hindered, by the fact that economic pressure is so great upon you, who are the very keystone of the work, that you cannot give your best efforts towards the accomplishment of our common purpose, then the organization should know it & DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. No use sticking our head in the sand, for if conditions are such that they hinder the progress of our work, then the board, or the respective committee of the board must act to overcome that barrier. True there is nothing new in the fact that you can't live on200 a month, but the remedy is certainly not in some haphazard method of drawing here, or there & when, because the money is there. That is why I have created this committee - that you might come to the committee & put before it frankly the fact that you simply can’t give your best to the organization or its work, if you are to be constantly under high financial pressure; that if the board cannot find means to increase your salary, then some budget must be provided to take care of emergencies, even if that budget has to be voted out of the hospital account. To prove to you that I am right, I tried an experiment. After receiving the committee letters from you, (& I surely appreciate your cooperation in this), I called [195] long distance, informing him that the Sept. meeting would be Saturday afternoon, Sept. 29th, (we have since changed it to Sunday morning Sept. 30), at my house, … St. I told him that one of the considerations would be a resolution to increase your salary from 200 to 300 per Month. Then I waited to hear the reply. I got just what I wanted. He said: “I’m willing to do my share & will be there.”
Now isn’t that better than the old way, which would be simply my sending personally the added $100 or [137] & I doing it? See how easy words are to misunderstand, for you could say: “Of course its better since you don’t have to give so much that way.” Have I ever, in the time you’ve known me acted this way? Have I ever been mercenary or failed when the Doctor said either I get mine or I just can’t see it through. Why then should I change now? I haven’t at all - I’d give my life for the ideal we’ve formed, & as God is my witness that is true - & God is no idle word to me. But I believe I am doing more by forcing a collective board to face our problems, than by my handling them quietly by myself. I am happy that we have reached the point where this may be done. Furthermore it takes your own affairs out of a personal relationship to any individual & puts them on a business like basis in relationship to an impersonal board, irrespective of the fact that each member of the board is a personal friend of yours. I am sure this will suit you - I know it would me & we are all pretty much alike in these matters. As ever my own personal feeling is the same as ever & I stand ever ready to fill any emergency that may arrive, but as much as possible, it will be best if the whole board assumes its rightful responsibility & activity with respect thereto. It is toward this end, I have been working & if my method has involved an abrupt letter, written in staccato fashion to you, it was only so written due to the terrific business pressure I have been under, & the speediness with which I have sought to dispatch work towards an end I have in mind, for the accomplishment of a goal I have my eyes fixed upon. Naturally that kind of a written letter would find no explanation in that which my mind holds in reserve as an end in view. You cannot know of certain reserves I have for emergencies, & that I have been able to create, thanks to cosmic or divine aid, that includes your most valued services. How could you then understand an abrupt letter, unusual to the kind you look for & expect from me.
Regarding [165], I thoroughly agree with you, & think possibly [257] led me off on this. I don’t understand just what took place, or how or why, except the little [257] told me, but I think these things are insignificant in the light of our work. I only want to bring him closer to us, & bring a greater measure of cooperation from him. I believe the Readings simply strive to get these men, ([953] & [165]), to know me better, rather than just superficially. You see we see one, hear one, read what one says on this plane, but on the cosmic plane we see & know what an individual really is, & what he or she is capable of. This is shown in Life Readings. This would seem a bouquet at myself, but what I mean is [165] might see a young man [900] of too little experience, whereas the Readings tell us many a young man is but seemingly young, for in UNDERSTANDING & in developed potential abilities he may be immeasurably older than the physically aged. If I have only 1/2 the mental abilities the Readings have said I have, (altho my application is for some peculiar reason very poor), & a man like [165] could find this in me, his cooperation would, no doubt, become the greater.
You are right of course regarding [302] & the lists, mailing & membership. She has gone to great trouble & effort to compile a book in most complete & classified order on this, that should be very useful & she couldn’t understand the discrepancy between her detailed classified lists & yours. Thus my questions, again probably too abruptly put in my letter.
Nearly $900 is due on lots in Oct. That ought give us something to think about & plan for at our meeting Sept 30, for which [137] will send notices tomorrow. Now we have [137] with [195] working actively with us, with [257] slowly being sucked into the organization of the work. We really are progressing.
Truly as I write now I forget just what was in my mind when I talked about consenting to [257]‘s approach to others. Possibly if I had my letter in front of me & could refresh my memory by what went before & after, I might better explain. Altho that letter is not before me, it must be clear that I could not mean by “consent”, giving my permission. It is not for me to permit or forbid & such a thing would obviously be as foreign to my meaning as the farthermost planet from the earth. What I undoubtedly meant is what is now in my mind - ie I can “RECONCILE” [257]‘s method of approach to my own. My, if I ever had brought home to me the care one must use in choice of words to express one’s true attitude of mind, it is now. In other words, altho I don’t like his methods & don’t & won’t use them, nevertheless they do serve a good purpose in the spreading of the good our work may do & therefore reconcile his way to & with my own. He works from the desires of the flesh back to the ideal we form in mind & that we use the desires to express. Not a bad method, if the ideal is not altogether neglected in the final aspect, when dealing with flesh in a material world. I am such an idealistic sort of a cuss myself, that I probably assume to too great an extent that others likewise enjoy imagining a like ideal & striving to reach its materialization.
No, of course I didn’t mean that YOU were trying to further your own individual idea. I meant that you let yourself be used, or be coaxed into being used by some one individual who seeks his own ends alone in a reading. Not that he may seek that end to exclusion of everything else, yet in some one individual case he may seek his own end - not FROM the reading itself, but from the use to which he contends to put the information gained. For example, [257] has faith & fulfills the requirements for any kind of a reading, physical, life, business or financial ETC. Therefore to him it may be given. But now & then [257] will try to get a physical, for example, for some man or woman, who has not fulfilled the requirements in expressing a desire for same, & for whom the reading should NOT be taken. It is perfectly alright that [257] wants to strengthen his own business or other relationship with that individual whom he seeks to so serve, & also that he thinks by this method to interest a wealthy or influential individual, but our ORGANIZATION has embodied in its RULES, (by virtue of instructions received from the givers or producers of the readings), the regulation that no reading shall be given unless it is desired, & expression of such desire made by the individual obtaining the reading or by one responsible for the individual obtain- ing the reading. It is a rule of our ORGANIZATION & if you allow any one to use you who has not met this requirement, then your method of doing the good the ORGANIZATION seeks to do in its psychic research work is inconsistent. You know as well as I do that [257] is often guilty here & sooner or later he must learn that while we each may do a thing as we see best to do it, yet certain laws governing certain processes must be adhered to - or the process simply won’t function as we want it to. That is what I meant & mean. It isn’t just taking readings in private. A man may choose to commune with his God alone - either thru you or in his own heart. It is that our method must correspond to the process by which such communion may be made, either through ourselves or another channel. I know now I seek just such an interview & while I’ve had many such, when you come to N.Y. I do hope you will let me take such a quiet reading & thrash out many things that are heavy on my heart & weighing me down mentally at this time. I remember taking a physical for myself in the hotel room once while you were here. It was so different in a way. It was personal, conversational - talked to me as “[900]” & seemed to smile encouragingly at me all the way through. No, it’s just that H2O makes water & when we try to make H3O from water we don’t get water at all - & sometimes we get an explosion & utter confusion - as for example the method by which I explained things that were in my mind in my last letters. The method brot an explosion in your mind, not what I MEANT to convey at all.
Talking about visions, my father spoke to me on my letter to you regarding college & Hugh Lynn. It’s really wonderful how they see, know, understand every detail from the cosmic plane, even on material affairs, altho heaven knows every physical, & every Gary - DePew advice bears witness to this. My Father said:
“I took you from college to check your willful extravagances. This does not apply to Hugh Lynn.”
That was it alright. I was an extravagant youngster - not meaning to be - but I was & my father saw that college was but encouraging me in a career of wastefulness. So he took me out, for my own good. It has proven wise - for as has been given what I need is knowledge of correct & efficient application, not book learning so much, for there I may rely on the word within & my own potential ability to understand a proposition of any kind. I believe Hugh Lynn has the mental abilities & I certainly feel it a pleasure to help him as I do for anyone. There is no misinterpretation here; I simply was wrong even in my comprehension of my own father’s attitude towards my college education. Personally I believe in college, particularly for a student type, as Hugh Lynn. Maybe you recall my encouraging him in this direction even while he was in high school. Truth to tell the whole thing was a foolish irritation & if Hugh Lynn had simply quietly gone back, [195] & I would have done as before - & in my secret heart I’d have gotten quite a kick out of being the one to send him through. Now you see how the admonition to me: “Listen to the voice within, not to those without,” applies in other things then the stock market. You might say I’ve gotten enough good out of the work to owe it my services. I’ve gotten more good than my services may ever repay, yet it isn’t that that I seek. If it was, [257]‘s methods would appeal to me - ie if keeping you as a sort of private institution, so obligated as to be willing to give a few of us & a few others I am chosing readings. It isn’t at all. Fewer & fewer because my own requests; greater & greater do I want to create facilities for all - for the way to secure these. Surely the method & organization work do not belie me here as being insincere.
I can understand your reference to David & the shew bread. It may be that I deserve the rebuke. If so I have no false pride about admitting it. Yet good will come of it for all that, in that we will get greater activity, cooperation from our members, & a more awakened realization by them of problems that should NOT be ignored, & of conditions that must be remedied. So I say all is well that ends well & for our own good & for that of our work let’s forget it.
Two years ago one individual [Mrs. [4255], his sister-in-law [140]‘s mother?] made life so terrible for me as to threaten to cause my financial destruction, & to smash the happiness of those dear to me if I didn’t give up this work. This individual had the power to do this. My mother cried, begged pleaded. I went to my room & kneeling said of this person: “Father forgive this individual, this person knows not that being done.”
Then came that unforgettable tap on the shoulder & from that time, altho I wanted to be angry at the person, I could only find it in my heart to forgive. What I mean to convey here is that by getting in at-onement with the Spirit Father Force, I was able to like Him, forgive in spite of a physical prejudice, for the latter of which there certainly was ample cause, & what I further want to convey is that to this day, no matter what anyone does, or says it is but minutes until I forgive - or in other words the experience left its mark so indelibly upon me, that I am free of hate & bear grudge against none. That is an enviable condition isn’t it? Naturally I feel ever so strongly that we should not bear a grudge towards each other even when there is cause. There must be no gap created between us, or we do all over again what we did before - split for whatever reason. Let’s forget it.
In regard to Gertrude, again you’re right. I can see that she sees others get so much from the readings - she so little from a source that she herself is so close to. What I meant to convey is that she can rejoice in being such an instrument of & for good. I do wish Gertrude could have seen how some of the things worked - or maybe it’s better she didn’t, for unless we understand well their conclusion is liable to be: “Well those readings are wonderful in physicals, Life ETC - but too often misleading in financial,” or it might be that if the reading could be at all inaccurate on finances it also could be regarding physicals, both of which conclusions are ALL WRONG. In all financial readings, the ever changing phenomena of conditions must be [?] & with in a greater degree than in the changing phenomena of one’s physical body. Men are liable to lose their heads when sick & kill themselves or die of nervousness or heart trouble. But this doesn’t often happen & if remedies given are applied soon enough after reading is taken as not to allow too great a change to take place in the body before the remedies are administered, good results may be expected. In finance it is different. Changes come violently & suddenly as men change their minds, as is seen in sudden punchy throwing over of stocks regardless of values. Sometimes these are foreseen in readings - sometimes that, that should cause this is foreseen & and a slump predicted - yet in the changes that are in process it may not come about at all. This violent degree of change, & the speed with which it may come (psychological, see), makes financial readings dangerous to follow UNLESS the element of change is well considered from every angle. Human beings may get a fit of fear & haul in everything, or that which should cause them ordinarily to be so emotionally affected, may just go by & human beings get a fit of emotional bravado. All of which proves the “WILL is Free,” because we can’t say positively that emotional reactions will be one way or the other. Financial Readings are very very worth while for the cosmic entity sees the process of emotional change going on & is better able to predict HOW such change is going to proceed than are we from the outside. Therefore the advice that I listen myself for advice from within in order that these constant changes may be given as they are in process of being made. Gary of course, knowing who are able to financially keep stocks UP, is best fitted to advise on which stocks & when to buy or sell, yet he must be heard often. So the information, while wonderfully, valuable, boomerangs & becomes detrimental if the one obtaining it doesn’t know how to use or apply it after getting it. To return to Gertrude, do not think for one minute that I have belittled her position. To the contrary I respect it & am willing to do everything to help make those who use her, realize that were it not that she takes the readings in an orderly, consistent manner, they could not be taken with any degree of scientific certainty, so necessary if research is to be of any value. It is only that I want her to know that I am with her heart & soul, but beg that she be patient until this organization is so rounded & its finances so in order as to be able to make things on a more equal basis for all. Possibly it hurts her that her own motives are often so grossly misunderstood. I know what it is to be misunderstood. She wants to be appreciated for her true motive that is whole hearted cooperation to do this work, yet she wants it remembered that she is a mother & wife while at the same time a co-worker. Heaven knows [136] is not sensitive - & altho you can roast her as much as you like & she’ll laugh with you, but say something about that baby boy [142] that isn’t just so, & the whole darned army won’t be protection enough. Doubtless Gertrude feels the same of her loved ones & wants for them, what we all want for our own. I don’t blame her at all - in fact would feel her strangely unnatural if it were otherwise. I only ask that she look back to the Dayton days & see how step by step we are making progress & just as life stores potential energy in the seed or soul, to explode seemingly all at once into flower or man in this world, so we have stored & sowed, & the explosion soon will come. The Hospital that bears her name will soon be finished. The work for which she gave & gives so much will soon blossom forth. Soon now all past troubles will be small, the shaded hills are in sight. Soon she will need to worry in that direction no longer & can devote herself wholly to the good of the work in the Glory of which she shall live, & in the name of which her children shall rejoice. For behold that life is One. Never before have we been so prosperous. Our business now flourishes, & now at least things begin to look as tho my aim for economic independence may soon come & I will have means to back my ideals, where money is necessary - unless reverses come. At the center of this financial growth is [137], & then [195] sent me
10000 on which I made him about8000 - & now I create the finance board - [137] chairman - no longer little [900] but a strong, substantial financial board to back, support & promote aggressively our enterprise! Don’t you see the hand of Gary expressing itself through me? All of you in quiet Virginia Beach - know that the wheels are turning, turning, turning & the Hand of God is at the Helm. If we children of the flesh do not make darn fools of ourselves & get to squabbling amongst ourselves, our ship, laden with good fruits, shall reach her destination. So I end this volume with a fond good night to all of you & remember when I go off erratically once in a while it is a combination of terrific financial pressure, & other considerations, & a physical body that seems constantly on the verge of breaking down together with a measure of temperament that seems usually to attend a peculiar mind such as I seem to have. Yet also remember my sincere regard, my sincere feeling, my ideal & determination as regards the work & those of us exploiting it, never for a minute wavers.
Sincerest regards, [900]
P.S. Will you please reserve 2 double rooms with baths for Friday Oct 12th to Sunday Oct 14th at Cavalier & have them write me same is reserved. This for the 4 of us [[900], [136], [137], [140]] over this week end.
R12. 9/19/28 HLC’s letter to EC:
Wed. Nite
Dear Dad,
I received yours and Muddie’s letter this afternoon. It would be useless to try and express in words the emotions I felt while reading [900]‘s and your letters. I do not know where to begin in telling you what I think of them. There are many phases dwelled upon at length by you both that need to be straighten out in my own mind. There is much to study in them, much to think about, much to remember, much to forget.
I don’t think you said too much and I think, truly, that you said what you did say beautifully. In beautiful I mean the fitting of the condition exactly. It must be said of us all that we grasp only a bit of understanding of it all. I did not realize until reading [900]‘s letter how much he doesn’t understand. Truly, it might be said what profit gaineth a man to know and understand the theories of the universe if he fails to understand his fellow men. From the theories may come knowledge of what drives the physical man but never from them alone can one learn of that which wakes the inner man, feel, love, hate and reach out for something better. Dad you have always had a great problem to work out in getting those interested in the work to work together. You have heard me say this a thousand times but it remains as it will always remain your problem and not one elses. Let this one and that come in and try to run off with the end of the work he is interested in but always it is to you to whom they return when they find themselves lost within themselves or down with the world on top of them. Let who will or may claim that it is only through you that the readings come but the fact remains that it is your soul and spirit that is giving the world this work, your real self that has worked and suffered for ages to build an inner man capable of holding the work in the hollow of his hand as well as in the center of his heart. Let those who sense the truth and refused to express it try and tell the world that you are but a channel, useless but for the force back of you; then the world will cry out that they understand but one thing. There is a man who is working WITH a force of which we know nothing but through him will come understanding. God cannot work through men who do not cooperate with him. Can you not see then, Dad, this man [900] drifting in his line of the work judging from his angle, but from an angle which as yet with all his progress fails to understand the very basic factors with which he deals - you and those about you. Perhaps it is best to claim for him also, as for us all, he who does not understand is not to blame. Dad, you and you alone can grasp the real meaning of the work, for your real self has met many times the forces with which you work - you know within yourself - be patient with us who stumble blindly and in stumbling hurt you, there are many looking to you - to you who works with the forces we would understand.
[900] will think a long time over your letter and I believe it will help him to see things in a clearer light.
One thing amuses me especially in his letters. For one who denies the influence of the past and who depends so on the present he is peculiar in his statements. Out of his past comes that jealousy of [257], comes that fear of [953] and [165] which he attempts to cast easily aside with, “I fear them not.” comes “I have won [195], etc” Peculiar statements all and many more that can be traced. Perhaps I am wrong, perhaps this is but my own influences breaking forth. But I speak not in a light of criticism but in one of explanation. It is natural to expect these. Consider them as urges. I begin to see what was really meant when He said “Forgive them they know not what they do.”
With regard to both his and your references to my self, I was extremely interested. Truly I consider my blunder in preparation for college this year one of the greatest mistakes I’ve made in dealing with people. It was, the attempt or manner in which I tried to obtain funds, the culmination of several years of mistakes. The practical side of life has meant very little to me and the trouble is that I do not care for it to ever hold a place worthy of mention in my life. The mistake in continually making this mistake of judging the practical entirely worthless led to a point when I was forced to realize its value in presenting my self to other people. I thought I understood its value. I do not and I shall tend to try to find that value in the coming few years. Once I understand it then I shall pass on the more important matters in the process of living. I shall have trouble in getting a correct sense of values, I’ll need help and I’ll never, never make the mistake of not consulting you and Muddie on so important matters which influence my life. In part I feel responsible for much of the turmoil which has been going on lately, I am sorry. I did not understand myself nor others as I should have before moving as I did. My past influences I know but their strength I do not know. I think I have done much to temper them with understanding and reason; at times and in certain points I have not yet succeeded in mastering. At least I know their danger when loosed and I know that which will shape them into worth while urges. I shall continue to try.
I shall write [900] tomorrow, I would like to see his answer to your letter.
The breaks here and there have been troublesome but if the great breach comes between N.Y. and Chicago [[900] - [953] - [165]] we will learn to be the actors in a real trying situation, again.
After the peace comes though will come happiness and a period of real accomplishment - for the world we must go on, for ourselves we must try again and again. With understanding will come the content of a soul at ease.
Outside the raid has stopped, all is quiet - all is well here, life is varied and interested, the fellows are real and fine - all is well.
Yours, Hugh Lynn

R14. 9/24/28 EC’s ltr. to [900]:
Dear [900]-
I have yours of the 18th, also of the 22nd [About N.Y. Board Meeting - wanting to get personal rdg. and conduct it himself, etc.]. I appreciate your taking the time to write me as you did. I don’t feel I am able at this time to go into the detail and attempt to answer you. I don’t under stand it all. I’m sure its just a different viewpoint, that we may have, and doesn’t necessarily mean that either of us is wrong. I’m hoping I may have the opportunity to sit down and talk this over with you - just you and I. I appreciate, too, your check for the trip up. I had been wondering just how I would manage it. I didn’t want to draw on the funds of the Association, and yet I knew I was not in any position to pay my own expenses out of what we have.
I received the notice of the meeting, too, from [137]. I believe, as you say, this is a step in the right direction, and if we can get all of the Committee together, we should get this portion of our work on a basis that should be satisfactory in every way. While this is just a part of the work, of course just at this time it is a very important part, and one that needs sincere thought and study. If we can devise some means whereby the individuals may be made more conscious of the privilege they have through the cooperation of the Association, I’m sure this part of the work will not suffer. Of course there is a great tendency of most people to judge any work by that accomplished in a financial way and manner. While that is very necessary, yet in a work of this character, if I have any understanding, the finance should be a result, rather than a first principle. But I had the idea that if it would be agreeable, and you would be in N.Y., I would come up Thursday night - see you Friday afternoon and evening, if possible - and Saturday afternoon - so that we might have the opportunity to talk over many things, and especially get a more perfect understanding of each other’s motives. Not that I’m questioning ANYONE’S motive, but you know usually everyone questions everyone’s motive concerning work of this nature. I’ll want to talk to you, too, concerning [165]. I don’t know whether I have the right ideas concerning this or not. But I can only see (judging by what must have happened when the work was first begun, and what is happening when it is beginning to be finished) that no one else can ever rightfully be the leader than yourself. But these I will talk over with you, so if you will - as you suggest - make the reservation at the Hotel across the street (I forget the name), I will be up then Friday morning.
There will be some other questions, too. Some other associations and connections that I want to discuss with you at length, as it so happens that we will possibly make these contacts at this time, and when we haven’t had them heretofore to deal with or consider in a serious way and manner. I hope [195] will be there at that time too, but, as I said, I hope we will have the opportunity - just you and I - to talk over many of these things.
We had [195]‘s drawing and thesis and will get this today. I’m hoping we will get this straightened out and set in such a way that he will be able to work it out just the way he wants from this. He is practically now ready for work on the model, if I understand it. This will be sent him today [See [4665] Motor series.]
Hoping, then, to see you Friday - and be sure and let me know about the reservation and if you will be in town - I am, with kindest personal regards,
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce [EC:GD]

R18. 10/10/28 EC’s letter to HLC:
Wednesday afternoon,
Dear Hugh Lynn:-
Sugar, I haven’t written you for some time. I didn’t know how to answer your letter - I felt so torn up about it, and I don’t know as I know yet just what to think of it all. Of course there have been some things maybe that have been used, or may be used, as a bait - but possibly such things are necessary for some peoples’ better understanding. I don’t like the attitude [900] assumed, especially about you. Neither did [195] like his not having sent you what he told him to. I believe I would write [195], rather than [900], about that. When I went to New York I had a good long heart-to-heart talk with [900] - just he and I. I also had about an hour’s talk with [195] and about the same with [137]. I don’t know as I understood, or understand, [900] any better than I did before I had a talk with him. I think I did get something from [137] - and HIS main thought and idea is this: “One may use the information to obtain financial help and assistance, but God pity the man who doesn’t use it correctly!” [195], seemingly, has got this over to [137] quite clearly. [900], of course, claims he feels the same way. Possibly by saying “he claims” would indicate I didn’t think he acted that way. He was kind enough while I was there - he and [137] - they had a tip on a certain stock - not from the readings - but they invested a little for me and gave it to me personally before I left, which enables me to (for the first time since I can remember of having been in business) pay all that I owe in October. [900] also informed me that he and [137] felt it was nothing more than right that whenever there was information that was worth while (such as regarding certain stocks to be bought and put away) some of us - first one and then the other of the family - should be taken care of in the same way and manner; that is, various stocks had been bought and you, one for Edgar Evans, one for your mother, and one for myself. What their idea is in just putting it away and not saying anything, I don’t know. Possibly, if it became necessary, they could go ahead and use them as collateral, while if they changed them over to our own names, maybe we would have too much, or would want to sell them right away. By the way, I just understand, that’s why Bransford [Johnson S. Bransford] was somewhat perturbed at me - that the stock he gave me some years ago was sold to someone else without notifying him of the sale.
But, all in all, we had a very good meeting. [257] was not present, yet they voted him an increase in his monthly contribution and of course they wanted me to break the news to him, so I had to remain a day or two longer to do this. But he agreed. I think [257] thinks a lot of your letter. He asked me to read it. Said he hadn’t answered you, as he had been so busy, and he really hadn’t felt equal to answering in the way and manner he desired to answer, but said he was going to right away. Possibly you have heard before now. Poor [257]! He’s got his hands full - not only in his business, but in his family - his own home, and with his brothers. He likes to handle everybody’s business, and he sure has it to do!
I had quite an interesting experience in New York - though I wasn’t feeling good - such a cold - am not feeling good yet. First I got [900] and [195] to meet Mr. [943]. That was rather an experience. Then I went with [903] one evening to see a show - MACHINAL - machinal means pertaining to machinery, or machines. The play is supposed to be founded on the Snyder-Gray affair, though it doesn’t follow the story at all. It was quite a wonderful play to me, inasmuch as one in my position could see that the work we are undertaking is the answer to the questions that are continually being asked throughout the play. It would be hard to describe the story. It’s sordid in a manner, as it deals with a girl marrying for money to satisfy her mother, who doesn’t see that just everyday drudge isn’t the proper thing. Also the life of a man that continues to make money his god. Then the other side, where those that make the satisfying of bodily desires their god, whether it means drink or sex. Then the outcome of ostracism socially - the application of penal law, as respecting moral and spiritual law, and the electric chair. Not a beautiful outlook, yet the constant question “Won’t SOMEBODY - Won’t SOMEBODY tell me WHY?” is asked. As [903] said, it made her understand the actual work we are trying to do in a way that she has never seen before.
And then I met Count [4341] and Countess de […] - and, to cap it all, not only talked with them a few hours, but instead of returning to my hotel went to their apartment and spent the night. Going some, isn’t it? While we were discussing the meeting on the 11th, I told [900] and [137] and [257] that if we could it would be wonderful to get Professor Brown [William Moseley Brown, Ph.D.] to deliver the address of the day. Of course they didn’t think it was possible, but I finally got [900] to write him. I don’t know whether he has spoken to you about it or not. He has accepted, though, and is to make the address of the day. Don’t tell him (Professor Brown) that I told you though, until he says something to you. Don’t forget that now. I’m in hopes this makes you as enthusiastic as it does me, for if it isn’t following just the information that has been given, I don’t know what it is. Be sure and let me know what you make out of it anyway, and don’t say anything to him until he says something to you, if he hasn’t already done so.
But tell Tom Tom Sugrue] I want him to be sure and be here, if it is possible for him to get away. I’ll pay the railroad fare if he can’t handle it. Thomas [Thomas House, Jr.] I suppose will come, if he wants to.
I know this is sort of a harem-scarem scattering sort of letter, but maybe when I’m feeling better I can write better. Write me when you have time. I’m sure you are finding your hands full with your job and your work. Take real good care of yourself. Hold on rather tight. Be sure and let me know what you will need from time to time. I finally persuaded Mother to have her dress made. Hope it looks pretty and suits her.
Grandpa left Monday - I guess will be back for the 11th. He isn’t well at all.
I don’t feel good. Such a cold! Let me hear from you. With best love,
P.S. [900] just forwarded a check for $17 that had been sent to Miss [302] for the sale of coins, by Mr. [953].

First real work Hugh Lynn had ever done, but he put in about three weeks of as hard work as you would want to see a fellow do. I thought he would play out, but he didn’t - but some of it was awfully hard and it was mighty hot. He got mighty sore and mighty tired, but they held on. They quit the end of last week and have gone to New York now for a few days - went up on the boat. If he can arrange it he will go back to school again this fall…”
