GC: You will have before you the islands of North and South Bimini, and the submerged land adjacent to same. You will outline in detail the necessary procedure to finance and develop this project, in the way of building streets, sidewalks, sea walls, canals, harbors, sewerage, water and electrical system, ice plant, laundries, and everything necessary to complete a resort city. You will answer all questions which I will ask you regarding this.
-
EC: Yes, we have the islands as are seen in the natural formations as are visible at the present time.
-
Now, we find there are many things that may be said as respecting the plausibility and the advisability of making a resort city in this location. First we would give, this would not be near as large an undertaking as it appears on the face of conditions, for this may be stored away as truth for those that would go about to accomplish such conditions: There will be found many, many, MANY sources of revenue for those undertaking such a project, for these mountain tops - especially that along the north and eastern shores of the north and northern portion of the south island - will produce many various minerals, and various other conditions that will be remunerative when the projects are undertaken; and well that the ones that do such labors - as the dredging as necessary, the building as necessary, the walls, etc. - be followed close in their operations, for these will uncover many various conditions that may be turned into dollars - and dollars - and dollars!
-
In considering the manner and way that this project would be financed, we find these conditions are to be considered:
-
First, in the various congested centers in which there are almost innumerable individuals that have achieved success in the financial way and MANNER, these - by the natural tend, or natural trend of human thought and human endeavor to gain from life those pleasures that bespeak of the effort as has been put forth - are seeking such outlets for a way to not only invest, but to build new and different modes and manners and ways for such pleasures. Acting, then, against the natural tend and bent of the inlander, as it may be termed, these are seeking such times, such places, that they may enjoy the fruits of their labors.
-
Again, this is as a truth which may be stored away again. Not expressed by those who would endeavor to make a resort or a city here. There are, as has been given, many peoples being born again into the earth’s plane who were through their experiences in this land. With the building then, again, we find the innate desire will come to an innumerable number to be in SOME manner or way associated - either as dwellers for a portion of the time or the whole time, or as the investers [investors?] in the project - to make this not only a habitable place, but as a resort equaled by none.
-
Now, as to the reasonableness, and how this may be gone about:
-
There is seen that the general lay of the land, and the surrounding territory or vicinity, or the natural lay of those waters nearby - these lend themselves, in a natural way, to the establishing of many, many, many acres - many miles of acres of territory. That not reclaimed, as it were, but the naturalness of conditions is to bring forth not ten, but hundredfold - for the labor and the time spent.
-
There will be seen that on the northern portion of south island will lend itself to the water supply, which is one of the first considerations of such a place. A sweet water. One that lends itself to that of being adaptable, not only for the drinking purposes, but for all purposes of the human body. This will be found by drilling to the depth which will be, true enough, below the sea level, yet the source is from far - far - away. Better water will be found than in those lands known as the continents. This also lends the modes of manufacture - of electro-hydro power in the waves, if necessary, by the tides - such as have been and are being builded in the Bay of Fundy - for with the walls as may be built in the western coasts of the inlet - which may be closed or left open, or builded for the purpose of an inland sea for the boat, the port, and for the fishing, bathing, and the like - this may be builded in such a manner on the northern shore of the south, and the southern shore of the north island, as to facilitate the power sufficient to electrify the whole of the lands that may be acclaimed and reclaimed.
-
In the centers that would be interested, then, in bringing about such a vision, such a dream, we would find that there have been various groups that have been approached as respecting how this may be carried out. We would seek rather those of the money powers in Cleveland and in Detroit, for these have such of a vision; for, as again may be stored away by those that would go about to accomplish such an undertaking: There are those associated with the Dodge millions, the Dodge accumulations [auto multi-millionaire Dodge family?], that once RULED in power here, and these, approached in the right way and manner, would be willing, glad, and anxious, to see such an undertaking carried on here.
-
In the ones that may be interested in the Chicago vicinity, these, as we see, are of the syndicated groups, and must be watched very closely, for these are not ALWAYS satisfactory groups to deal with.
-
Again we find, in the groups who are already interested, and who may be interested in the east - in New York or the northern places, these are of that bent and trend that is not always amenable to the suggestions of those who would build with a vision.
-
Rather would a combination of Detroit, Cleveland, London and Paris, be that which would be the more satisfactory for those who would undertake to bring about that which would prove, in this place, as the resort premier above others - for this may be accomplished in this place; for, as given again, this may be stored away by those who would undertake such: There will be within these developments many things that have as yet not even been thought of or considered, that would not only of THEMSELVES attract the great horde, but would also attract great wealth - for this is of the first highest civilization that will be uncovered in some of the adjacent lands to the west and south of the isles, see? Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Is this the continent known as Alta or Poseidia? Atlantis] (A) A temple of the Poseidians was in a portion of this land.
-
(Q) What minerals will be found here? (A) Gold, spar, and icthyolite [?]. [Ichthyolite?]
-
(Q) How deep in the ground will that be found? (A) In the wall that would be builded from the western portion of the south island towards that of the PROMINENT portions of the southern portion of isle - these will be found in the twelve to fifteen (12 to 15) foot levels. The VEIN, as workable, would be found extending in the northeast southwest direction. The waters in the northern portion of the south island. Sweet water, see?
-
(Q) Give the exact longitude and latitude of the vein? (A) In this we have the island - in this we have the place. Find these, or locate. These are known.
-
(Q) What amount will be necessary to complete development? (A) From seventy-five to ninety million.
-
(Q) Name individuals that would undertake the financing of the proposition, and procedure to obtain their support? (A) Those groups as given. Preferably those in the Detroit and Cleveland vicinity, cooperating with those of London and Paris. While the Londoner of a slower action - of a safer basis, see?
-
(Q) Give the full name of the person to undertake the financing of this. (A) Preferably that group as we have given, as it is seen that the natural trend will be in the Dodge forces, see?
-
(Q) How proceed to obtain their support? (A) Through those channels - see, we have first and foremost one of these of this group that has been - what in common parlance would have been - “badly burned” in Florida propositions; yet there are many millions more in the other side of the house - which makes it more specific, and is of the one that would be the most easily interested. Proceed through those channels for the outlook of those conditions necessary, for MANY of those who are of the house of the peoples that are able, capable of financing such, are willing, when such is presented, in that one is willing to see such a project through - for first we consider, not only that as has been given as regarding the location, the position, the conditions as surround the feasibility of such a project, but the natural conditions of the whole life of those as are in the earth’s plane at the present period.
Follow these out. This is not an idle or vain dream, for those that would bring about such conditions are preparing for the building of many glories for self, and for posterity.
-
(Q) How deep will we have to drill for the fresh water? (A) Eight hundred and ninety-two (892) feet.
-
(Q) What supply would that obtain? (A) One thousand eight hundred gallons (1,800) per hour. The electro-hydro power would be made from that condition as may be builded, as given, which would supply all of the power necessary for any project that might be - might be - even undertaken here; for this would become not only a strategic point in the affairs of this - THIS - continent, but of others - as it has been in the eons past.
-
(Q) Could an additional supply of water be obtained by going deeper? (A) This is the strata for the water. Other supplies may be obtained in various portions near here, which would only increase the amount if necessary. This supply would increase, see?
-
(Q) Would this be Artesian? (A) Artesian.
-
(Q) It would flow out of the top? (A) Flow out over the top.
-
(Q) Is there any sulphur in this water? (A) Sulphur may be obtained here. THIS is sweet water here.
-
(Q) Give the chemical analysis. (A) Fifty-six percent (56%) pure water. Silicon a trace. Lime a trace. Magnesia a trace. This would be pure sweet water here, you see, with only the traces of those of silicon, magnesia, of lime, and of other properties as only would be seen in traces of same, see? and in the changes as brought, as given, this may be only increased by the heating, or the various conditions as may be brought to same - for, as a health resort, as the building up of the general body, and as of the whole system, see?
The sulphur waters may be obtained where there is seen an old channel on north end of the south portion of north island. These, we find, will be of the black sulphur, yet for certain conditions - and for the baths as may be instituted through same - will be quite beneficial to health, end especially to those of the neuritic conditions - nervousness, and of the germ of rheumatic conditions, see? This will be found only eighty-nine to ninety (89 to 90) feet deep, see? [GD’s note: See 587-3, Par. R12 of 9/28/72 for analysis of water in well, and 587-4, Par. R12 of 1/17/70.]
-
(Q) Could this port be made a shipping port? (A) Be made a shipping port, by the opening of the channel to the west and to the north here, see?
-
(Q) What would be the proper way to open this channel? (A) See, when a channel is made here - as we see, the sands only come from the southern end, that would hinder or produce a bar. When dredges are made, only the extension of those obstructions - that only divert the channel - which is of moving waters - to the outer edge, would prevent and keep from the bar being moved back and forth across. Rocks or piles, see? along this end.
Much may be given, and much may be accomplished - and as to those that would build such, that as is given as “keep in store” is, as it were, the bonus for the undertaking. Keep that for self.
- We are through for the present.

R1. 3/11/27 Mr. [943]‘s ltr. to EC:
Mr. Edgar Cayce, Virginia Beach, Va.
Dear Mr. Cayce:
In following up reading given as of March 2nd, 1927, at Miami, Florida, with reference to the development of Bimini, the following questions would be of interest:
- Give location of temple of the Poseidons and how far below surface must excavation be made to locate it and what would be found in the ruins of the temple?
- On which island will the gold vein or deposit be found and if on South Bimini how many feet from house now located West coast of same and in what direction?
- Give full name and business address of member of other side of Dodge house mentioned in your reading dated March 2, 1927?
- Plans and directions have been given for the development of Bimini islands, now give just what information and what should be said in presenting project and by what method should this interview be obtained and by whom should this information be presented to party to be interested?
- What is meant in reading given on March 2, 1927, by the words “Keep in Store.”
If we get answers to the above questions I believe that it will help us in arriving at more concrete information in the further steps of developing Bimini islands. Particular will be the information regarding the Poseidons’ civilization.
We plan to leave here to-morrow morning to take another hunt for the treasure at Broad Creek channel. [See 1274-8 Reports.]
With kindest personal regards to you and family,
Sincerely yours, [996]
R2. 3/25/27 EC gave another rdg., the last one, on Bimini - 996-13, but no copy is in the files, since it was loaned to Mr. [943] on 2/24/32 and not ret’d.
R3. 3/26/27 EC’s ltr. to Mr. [943]:
Mr. [943] Miami, Florida
My dear Mr. [943]:-
Yours of March 11th should have been attended to sooner, but I was called to New York Thursday a week ago, and was there until Tuesday. I had rather an interesting experience while I was there. I was invited to a dinner at the Pennsylvania Hotel, and I found there were twenty odd people at the dinner for whom I had given readings and whom I had never seen. This is the greatest number I have ever met at any ONE time. Some of them - the readings on them were as far back as fifteen years ago, several within the last two or three, and ONE the man I had to come home for! (from Florida, I mean) We gave his reading a few days after we got here. All of them, of course, were physicals, and each and every one of them were very enthusiastic as to the results they had obtained from following out the suggestions given. In one case there was a prescription given for a stomach trouble. There were at least ten who told me they had used this prescription with most wonderful results - people I had never given readings for. They simply had some trouble - something similar to the person’s trouble this reading was given to - they tried it out and got results! That, of course, is another phase of something we talked about while I was there.
Now, regarding the enclosed reading [996-13], this is not exactly like the first reading, yet is very consistent, I think, with same, and I feel sure that when these are followed out, and when the developments are begun, there will be a great deal more information available - much that will be very worth while.
I haven’t heard anything from any of you since the last reading on Broad Creek. [See 1274-9 on 3/15/27] I presume that this was like the other - not such that you were able to make any location, or discover the treasure. That I don’t understand, for I feel very sure the treasure is there. I can’t see how it is possible, with SO MUCH evidence of people obtaining results with information given, for physical conditions, for this other not to be correct in every sense of the word. There is something else in the way. What I don’t know!
Well, I hope you all will let us hear from you whenever you find the opportunity. Naturally anxious to know about what’s going on, how things are progressing at the well, how everything is working out in general. Give my kindest personal regards to all, and with best wishes from all to you, Mrs. [5571], and [4477], I am
Sincerely, EC:GD
R4. 6/22/28 Mr. [943]‘s ltr. to EC:
Miami, Florida
Dear Mr. Cayce:
I was in the northern part of the State this week and about two miles south of Lake City, Florida, some workmen digging for water found the remains of a prehistoric people buried about 63 to 70 feet under ground in a natural cave. I stopped there and at the present time it is possible to see the head of a man and woman as they have strong lights placed so that the light will reflect the bodies as they have been placed maybe millions of years ago. It is very interesting and I thought that you would be interested in this also and would perhaps want to give a reading on the matter. I would suggest that a few of the following questions be incorporated in the reading in someway that would give us the information:
At what period of the world was the petrified bodies placed where they are now located.
Give history of the civilization that existed at that time.
Is it possible to locate the remains of more of this people and civilization of that period in or near this location. If so give detail information as to how work should be started to locate them.
Give any and all information pertaining to this that is possible to give.
The above questions would give us some very interesting information, I believe, Mr. Cayce, and no doubt would uncover a civilization that existed millions of years ago and might give us information that would uncover something more startling than anything that has been found in the history of the world. I trust that you will find time to give it a reading as I am sure that you are as interested as I am. [GD’s note: Many other rdgs. were gotten for Mr. [943], but not this one.]

R9. 3/11/35 EC’s reply: “Well in Bimini southeastern portion of North Bimini. Tide only changes flow of well…” [GD’s note: Evidently EC had heard of this well when he visited Bimini in Feb. 1927, and he told Mrs. [587] about it in discussing Atlantis.]

R13. 12/18/40 Mrs. [2415]‘s [wife of [4825]] letter: I often think of a remark you made - possibly it was in one of those readings of the Bimini fame - you said some of the party should get their house in order. Later we learned of Mr. [943]‘s escapades.”
R14. 4/2/56 Mon., article from The Miami Herald:
TREASURE SHIP, LOST CITY BELIEVED FOUND OFF BIMINI
The boat he started out to salvage wasn’t there, but Robert Kronsberg, 22, of 1601 NW 22nd Ave., found a lost city in its place and, nearby, he found a sunken treasure ship.
That, at least, is what Kronsberg believes he found on a recent expedition to some reefs between Bimini and Nassau.
He came up with enough trophies from the sunken ship to convince him it is a Spanish galleon of the 1700 vintage and with sufficient coins to convince him the ship carried treasure.
IF HE IS CORRECT, THE EXPEDITION MAY HAVE TURNED OUT A MUCH GREATER SUCCESS THAN IF ITS ORIGINAL TARGET SHIP HAD BEEN FOUND.
Kronsberg has done considerable salvage work, out of West Palm Beach and Cocoa.
Recently he and his father, Gus, a former Coast Guardsman, decided to organize their own salvage company and bought a boat. But on their first trip out, headed for Bimini and the sunken ship they had heard about, the boat was pounded by high seas and came apart.
Young Kronsberg and Dillon, with two crew members, left Miami, March 20, headed once more for that ship.
That about wiped out their capital, but the Kronsbergs organized another expedition, chartering the yacht, “Our Son” from Scott Dillon.
THEY REACHED THE PLACE, BUT INSTEAD OF A SHIP ON THE OCEAN BOTTOM THEY FOUND MARBLE PILLARS AND COLUMNS, TOO HEAVY AND CUMBERSOME TO BE SALVAGED WITH AVAILABLE EQUIPMENT.
Kronsberg says he often has heard reports of a lost city, supposedly on the ocean floor like Atlantis, and he feels that he may well have stumbled on that city. At least he can come up with no other explanation of what those marble pillars are doing at the bottom of the sea.
Although this was a romantic theory, it left the expedition nothing to salvage. In the general area, however, they found their Spanish galleon. It wasn’t the boat they had started to find, but they soon became convinced it was even better.
THEY HAD ONLY TWO DAYS OF DIVING BEFORE THE WEATHER GOT SO BAD SMALL CRAFT WARNINGS WENT UP AND THEY HAD TO START HOME.
But that was sufficient time for recovery of an old musket, stone ballasts, drift pins, copper spikes, a clay vase, part of a bow spread and several coins.
They got back to Miami last week.
Kronsberg is so certain a treasure ship was found that he and his father now are trying to finance another expedition.
And this time they know a vessel is there.
R15. 4/6/66 Article from The Ledger-Star:
‘OLDEST ROCKS EVER’ FOUND OFF FLORIDA
BEAUFORT, N.C. (AP) - A Columbia University scientist says he has discovered a rock formation off the Florida coast which he describes as “the oldest ever found on the ocean floor anywhere.”
Dr. B. C. Heezen, a noted marine geologist, says the rock formation is considerably older than 100 million years and may have important implications in the search for oil deposits off the southeastern coast.
He made the discovery while working out of Duke University’s marine laboratory here.
Until this time, there had been no evidence that the Atlantic or any ocean was more than 100 million years old.
Dr. Heezen said his finding “increases the potential in exploration for oil in the offshore areas of Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas.
These are sedimentary rocks (the first found in these waters) and oil is found in sedimentary rock. Almost all sedimentary rocks have oil,” he said.
R16. 8/21/66 A Geologist’s ltr. to E.C.F.:
The Edgar Cayce Foundation Virginia Beach, Virginia
Attention: Mr. R. A. Adriance, President
Dear Mr. Adriance:
Pursuant to your letter of May 11, 1966, I have taken samples of the ocean floor sediment and the rock beneath it at the four points (W,X,Y,Z) shown on the attached map. These samples were taken August 2 and 3 by National Soil Services at my direction. I was in attendance during all phases of this operation.
The depths below mean sea level for each boring were: W: -43 ft., X: -40 ft., Y: -45 ft.: and Z: -45 ft. The outtings (Most of which were not saved) and rock core samples showed that the materials are exclusively limestone or calcareous sand and from top to bottom in each boring. Absolutely nothing resembling a buried mountain top - unless a limestone one - was recovered in those borings, nor were any artifacts recovered. I am forwarding to you one half of each sample obtained, per your instructions. Analyses of these samples will also be forwarded in due course.
My expenses for this job are $1,859.81. I have enclosed an itemized and receipted account sheet and would appreciate receiving reimbursement at your early convenience.
Thank you for requesting me to accomplish this work.
Sincerely, […] [Geologist]

R18. 8/25/68 Sunday, Miami, Florida - Newspaper article:
ATLANTIS MYSTERY STIRRED BY UNDERSEA DISCOVERY By HOWARD VAN SMITH (Staff Writer)
Has an outpost of Atlantis been discovered just 80 miles east by slightly south of Ft. Lauderdale?
A Yale professor of archaeology says this could very possibly be true.
A spokesman in the same department at Florida Atlantic University, asking his name not be used as a matter of political consideration, says absolutely no - that there never has been scientific verity to the “myth” of Atlantis.
What started this - and excited a lot of prominent people Friday - was announcement of discovery of the top of a large stone building off the coast of an unannounced Bahamas Island.
It was also said there was another building a half mile away. It was further said this probably was part of an ancient city.
Dr. Manson Valentine, former archaeology and zoology professor at Yale and excurator of the Miami Science Museum, was one of three people who flew out after the outline was spotted in the water by an airline pilot. He said:
“Whether or not we have here an Atlantean or post-cataclysmic artifact or upwards of 10,000 years is too early even to conjure upon.
“But what seems certain is that the ruin is surely pre-Columbian as established by its position relative to present water level. Also, it might conceivably be as ancient as the days before the last cataclysm, some 11,500 years ago, which destroyed the remnants of the legendary land of Atlantis.”
Valentine, whose connection with the find came because he is a member of the faculty of the Rebikoff Institute of Underwater Technology in Ft. Lauderdale which coincidentally graduated its first three members Friday, is listed as a member of the Explorers’ Club and discoverer of many important Mayan relics in the Yucatan Peninsula.
He also linked the find to the Yucatan area:
“In plan, both as to orientation and size, it bears reasonable resemblance to the Temple of the Turtles, a famous ceremonial complex in the Puuc (Grecian-like) style to be seen in the archaeological complex at Uxmal, Yucatan.
Both structures are partitioned off with one or more elongated chambers at the east end; both exhibit one or more cubical-like rooms incorporated in the west corners.
QUESTIONS RAISED
The spokesman at FAU thought this was carrying the fanciful a little too far. He stated that there was more than a little question as to whether the Yucatan discovery had any Grecian influence at all. Scientifically, he stated, he knew of none.
The mystery building - and no one seems to argue whether there is a building under sea water - was first discovered by Robert Brush, 25, a Miami cargo pilot, who reported it to Demetri Rebikoff, president of the Rebikoff Underwaters Products of this city and also head of the new oceanographic institute.
Dr. Rebikoff, Dr. Valentine and Dr. Richard Evans, chief scientist of the institute, flew to the site - which in one photograph appears less than a half mile from one of the Bahamas islands. The trip was made last week. Dr. Rebikoff said the reason for the delay was due to finances and other complications.
The three scientists dove around the walls, which, they reported, were only two feet from the surface at low tide. But uncovered by sand are only another two feet. They said the overall dimension of the walls was 50 by 90 feet.
Shape and sizing of the stone indicate plainly it was man-made, they said. They also said there were designs on the stones. A second building, somewhat smaller, was reported about a half mile away. Reason for the exposure and not being seen by a pilot before, as have many of the treasure wrecks, was some shifting of the sand by hurricane or other force had disclosed it.
Negotiations with the Bahamian government are now under way to excavate the entire building and perhaps more of the area, Rebikoff. Vacuum pumping of the sand is being considered.
Dr. Valentine said preliminary observations of pieces of the stones places it possibly between 500 and 1000 years of age. There is also evidence of some kind of plaster being used and this will be subject to the conventional carbon tests to ascertain age.
Still, it could be much older and part of the Atlantis legend, Dr. Valentine said.
“A five hundred year upper limit is not unconservative but a possible extension into remote antiquity might well multiply such a figure several times.”
On this is based the possibility that it might be an outpost of Atlantis, the continent and civilization that, according to as venerable a source as Plato, slipped below the sea.
Valentine says the structure could have been built when the land was 500 feet higher - it might have been a temple on a hill.

R20. 8/15/69 Friday, newspaper article in the Long Island Press:
ANOTHER GIANT LEAP FOR MANKIND…FAR BENEATH THE SEA
By STUART AUERBACK Special to the Press
WASHINGTON - Drifting silently down the powerful Gulf Stream in a 50-foot submarine, six scientists found a fascinating under sea world never before seen undisturbed by man. They saw:
Undersea hills that produced massive internal waves. These waves pushed the 140-ton submarine Ben Franklin 28 miles east - out of the swiftly-moving Gulf Stream.
Coral formations as high as 150 feet covered by 650 feet of water - far deeper than coral formations should be. This indicates that at one time in the ice age the coastline off Charleston, S.C., was about 70 miles further east than it is now.
A faster moving and narrower Gulf Stream than expected. The stream carried the Ben Franklin north splashed up at a spot in the Atlantic about 400 miles south-southeast of Nova Scotia.
Greater traveling comfort than sailing on top of the Atlantic Ocean. While the Ben Franklin’s support ships battled winds and waves on the surface, the submarine drifted serenely forward 600 feet below.
The 30-day voyage of Ben Franklin also furnished oceanographers with a mass of new data and undersea photographs of the Gulf Stream, the warm “river” in the Atlantic that influences weather from Florida to North Europe.
The Ben Franklin carried its crew of six scientists - headed by Swiss oceanographer Jacques Piccard - 1,650 miles in 30 days.
The voyage started on July 14 after the sub was towed 19 miles offshore Palm Beach, Fla., to catch the stream. It ended yesterday when the Ben Franklin splashed up at a spot in the Atlantic about 400 miles south-southeast of Nova Scotia.
The crew of six was taken aboard the Coast Guard cutter Cook Inlet for the 440 mile trip to Portland, Me. They will make a detailed report on their findings in Washington next Wednesday.
David S. Hosom, assistant manager for the $5 million project run by Grumman Aerospace Corp. of Bethpage, L.I., said the most interesting discovery of the voyage was the underwater waves caused by high hills on the ocean bottom.
These hills have never been charted before, Hosom said, and caused the submarine skipper, Donal Kazimir, to bring the Ben Franklin up from the ocean’s floor.
After being pushed out of the Gulf Stream by the force of the undersea waves, the Ben Franklin surfaced and was towed back into the position by its support ship, the Privateer.
The 100-foot-high coral beds off Charleston, S.C. gave clear indication, Hosom said, that the coastline was once further out in the Atlantic than it now is. Coral, he said, only grows near the surface of the water.
He suggested that the meltage of ice, which is still going on at the polar caps, submerged the coral formations and moved the coastline to the west.
Besides studying the topography of the ocean bottom, the Ben Franklin crew made a unique collection of plankton - microscopic marine organisms that combine into colonies to ride the ocean’s currents.
The Franklin was able to do this, Hosom said, because it was drifting along in the current the same way the plankton was.

PROJECT ATLANTIS’ DELVES DEPTHS!
While the world’s eyes have been focused high - on the moon landing and Mars photo recon mission - a comparatively small group of Miamians has been plotting a course down to the bottom of the ocean.
Picking the legendary lost continent of Atlantis as the program’s code name, a manned underwater station is scheduled to go into operation on the continental shelf off the the South Florida coast within the next several years.
“Project Atlantis” is slated for a 1,000-foot level on the edge of the continental shelf somewhere between West Palm Beach and Key Largo. It is planned to go down into the water and begin operations during 1972.
Atlantis is planned as an experimental station similar to the early man-in-space missions. It will provide a jumping-off point to further exploration of the depths of the ocean. It would be a test facility for both men and equipment.
Built to accommodate a 12-man crew, Atlantis plans to maintain a 10-man crew most of the time.
“During special tests, such as those involving the nuclear power reactor, we would need additional specialists on board,” said Dr. Lloyd V. Stover, project manager of Atlantis.
Some of the experiments which Atlantis hopes to carry out in the undersea lab include those involving the reactions of men living in a confined environment, similar to those conducted as part of the Apollo program and its preliminary programs. Other parts of the program will test the stress and effect equipment undergoes while in a submerged, highly- pressurized situation, and determining the type of equipment necessary for the long-term life-sustaining functions.
It will also seek to explore the depths and determine the contents of the oceans.
“We have only a smattering of knowledge of the contents of the oceans,” Stover said.
Conjecture as to the uses and resources available from the oceans of the world is almost as widely speculative as those that visualize trips to other planets.
“As man multiplies on Earth,” Stover said, pointing out that there are only 3.2 billion people on the Earth today, but 6.4 billion expected by the year 2,000 and 13 billion by the year 2,050, “we will turn more and more to an industrialized urban society with much higher needs for food, more material things such as television, autos, power and fresh water.
“The oceans at some locations have fresh spring water bubbling out from subterranean springs which can supply many location needs,” he said.
Stover pointed out that a fresh water spring just off the coast of Jacksonville alone bubbles up enough fresh water to supply all of Duval County’s needs daily. He cites others, especially in the Bahamas and Caribbean area.
Other benefits to come from the seas include oil, minerals, ores, precious gems, food and medical needs.
The Atlantis continental shelf test station will be the first to further research to divest the ocean of its valuables.
“We must provide a test facility as the space program did at Canaveral. We chose this area for several reasons,” said Stover.
“The water is cleaner and warmer here, and there is an abundance of marine life. Of course, the proximity of the Gulf Stream and Blake Plateau were determinants, also.”
The Mid-Atlantic Ridge figures prominently in Stover’s plans for Atlantis. He hopes to have a manned sea lab operative on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge within 10 years.
From the Mid-Atlantic Ridge he hopes to be able to explore down into the core of the Earth. What will be found there is another question.
“We believe that there is a constant volcanic action in the center of the Earth which spews molten material out at the crest of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. This material then travels along the ocean floor, and, we believe, drains into one of the deep ocean trenches, such as the Puerto Rican Trench, and re-circulates to the center of the Earth.
“This is a tremendous energy source, if we can learn to harness it. It could supply all of man’s energy needs.”
Among the “Project Atlantis” long-range objectives are development of means to mine valuable minerals and oils from the ocean, establishment of means to obtain foods and other valuables from the seas and, farther down the road in the 1980’s perhaps, a bottom-mounted space-launch facility (coupled with the development of a flying submarine by the late 1980s or early 1990s), and a prototype manned undersea colony within two decades.
Talk to any oceanography man and he will tell you that this is the field of the future. It has the excitement of space exploration, and the more tangible and immediately achievable goals, with commercial and industrial needs awaiting development.

BIMINI RESORT PLANS INCLUDE HISTORY THEMES (In the Business World)
The Bahamas government announced Wednesday night an agreement with North American Rockwell Corp. for engineering studies which may lead to a multi-million dollar development for North and South Bimini as a resort and recreational area with an historical and wilderness theme.
Development Minister Jeffrey M. Thompson said that the project would be a joint venture of the government and the American company and terms of the partnership will be based on 1,800 acres of government land, with Rockwell’s engineering studies, development capital and additional land from the 700 acres it presently owns.
Keystone of the project is dredging of a 12-foot harbor at East Wells inlet to accommodate large cruise ships, with daily service between Miami and Bimini.
The engineering studies now under way will also determine the feasibility of building a marina for fishing and pleasure craft, recreating an old Bahamian town in the harbor area and building a “city of the future.” Centerpiece of the latter would be a tower featuring an underwater restaurant and bar.
The proposed recreational park, with its historical and wilderness theme, would be along the eastern shore of North Bimini. Scale models of the Bahama islands would be constructed in canals, and the dramatic elements of Bahamian history would be recreated - the landfall by Columbus, the quest of Ponce de Leon for the fountain of youth, the era of the Pirates, and others.
Included in the agreement is the granting of exclusive exploration rights to a series of underwater “ruins” located several hundred feet off the Bimini coast. The “ruins” have been described as being a part of the legendary “lost continent of Atlantis” and their authenticity would be determined by the exploration.

Detroit Free Press BIMINI’S STRANGE STONEWORKS By Bill Barry Special to the Free Press
There is a curious thing that certain birds do.
Sometimes the birds fly out from the coastal mainlands in chattering flocks, heading purposively for open sea. The last island flecks finally pass below, but they continue on.
And far out in mid-Atlantic, the flocks veer off, circling, crying, looking down, expectant, as if there is supposed to be something there.
Only a vast and unbroken expanse of deep ocean is there. The flocks chatter in confusion, streaking downward helter-skelter, then soaring up to circle, and circle, and circle - baffled and bewildered - until they die, exhausted, and fall into the open sea, dead.
Men possessed of the dream say that in the birds it is memory, inherited memory, which recurs through the collective instinct of millenia, secured to the time long ago, when the ancestors of the birds gathered flocks on the continent of Atlantis…
Bonefish Sam never dreamed of Atlantis. He never heard of it. All his life he lived on the island of Bimini, in the Bahamas. He knew where the fish were, and Americans hired him to take them to fish. One thing Sam knew about Americans
- they were all a little batty. Nothing they did surprised him anymore.
So, one day a tall old skinny American asked Sam if he could find the mountain in the water. The Pinnacle, was what the American called it. It was 60 feet down in the Gulf Stream, and its sides dropped straight down out of sight, maybe 3,000 feet or more. The top of it was a long, elliptical shelf.
“Oh, yah,” Sam said. “I know de place. The fishin’s no good. The charks is much too bad dere.”
“We’re not going fishing,” the old man said. “We’re going diving.”
“Ho, boy,” Sam laughed. “Okay. We go.”
So they went, on Robert Angove’s 30-foot cabin cruiser out of Fort Lauderdale. It was Labor Day, Sept. 2, 1968.
THE OLD MAN was Dr. J. Manson Valentine, naturalist and earth scientist. A very slight but exuberant Frenchman was aboard, Jacques Mayol, who held the world’s underwater free dive record - 250 feet down, on his own air.
There was a chill in the air, and the water was choppy. They set sea anchors, then the Frenchman went over the side, wearing just mask snorkel and flippers.
The Frenchman didn’t come up, and after a while, he still didn’t come up. And minutes later, no Frenchman. No man got that much air, never.
Ho, boy, Sam was thinking, those charks…those charks.
The Frenchman’s head popped awash out of water, not even gasping.
“Some - sing,” he said, thumbing downward, and he shrugged, unsure.
So then the old man went over, a little rusty in his joints. A long way below the water’s surface, there was indeed something. But Valentine could not be sure that it was the key he sought - the mountain which once stood on the land. He could not hang on it for a real close look, as Jacques could do. The current was bad, and there were shadowy shapes gliding about, staying just out of ken, a little frightening.
Come on, back to the boat, Valentine signaled. They climbed aboard.
“I think we ought to head in,” Valentine said. “There isn’t much light left. Maybe Sam can find us a nice shallow reef we can all dive on. Just for the fun.”
On a hot August day, in 1927, Edgar Cayce in trance was being asked about the future commercial prospects of the Bahamas Islands - would they be developed for mineral exploration, industry.
Cayce told what he foresaw: Many large and modern hotels gathered in particular areas; a hydroelectric plant at the mouth of a harbor channel; a search for rich oil deposits that would fail; and the remains of a once mighty continent.
“Is this the continent known as Alta, or Poseida (Atlantis)?”
“A temple of the Poseidians was in a portion of this land,” he answered.
“How deep in the ground will that be?”
“In the wall that would be builded from the western portion of the south island…in the 12 to 15-foot levels…extending in the northeast-southwest direction…”
Sam guided the boat to a place about a half mile off the western shoreline not far from Paradise Point. The water was 12 to 15 feet deep.
Valentine jumped in, and the others followed, cavorting. Below the surface chop, the water was clear as air. On the bottom, there was no coral reef. Instead, there were two rows of enormous rocks, which on first sight had all the appearance of having been laid there as part of a giant Cyclopsean roadway.
They all saw it at once, and shot up, hollering, snorkels askew.
“What is it?”
“We’ve struck it rich,” Valentine yelled. “We have really got something here. This is really…something!”
And he dove down again.
The rows were exactly parallel, extending in a northeast- southwest direction. On closer look, they appeared to form walls, huge loaves of stone placed down one after the other, some as large as rooms, interdicted by sandy avenues. Smaller squares and hexagonals formed mosaics, and there appeared to be deeper layers of stone beneath the topmost.
They dove again and again, roving over the structure. Valentine’s excitement over-whelmed him. He lost his weight belt, but kept diving, fighting to stay down. The rocks were composed of eolithic sandy limestone, typical Bahamian beach rock, simple to quarry. But if man had done the work, not nature, the wall would have been built when the land was water, and that would have to have been…At least 10,000 years before!
Then, perhaps, Valentine even said the word.
Atlantis. The antediluvian world, before the earth’s magnetic poles went blooey, hurling the world topsy-turvy on its axis, the great Ice Age of the Pleistocene, the cataclysms and the floods.
He shot up for air.
“Do you know what it is, Sam?”
“Yes, sir,” Sam said. “It’s sort of like a road.”
“How far does it go?”
“Oh, it goes off ‘bout a mile, then goes under.”
“Do you know where it came from?”
“Nope. But if you like these so much, I’ll take you to a really big one, out in 50 feet or so.”
Sam took them out to the really big one. Right away, they saw that he had been straight and true.
In 50 feet of water, a vast system of rocks formed a maze of megalithic stone work. It had the appearance of city blocks shaved off buildings at their foundations. The head of the maze curved into a circular courtyard that reached backward toward the first two walls, then abruptly disappeared beneath the silty bottom.
Pilot Robert Brush heard about Valentine. A mutual friend introduced them. Brush was flying a regular cargo flight between Miami and the Bahamas, for Southern Airways. After talking to Valentine, Brush began scanning the ocean floor from his cockpit.
In 1968, at the same time Valentine had happened upon the walls of stone leaves, Brush spotted a series of configurations off the north coast of Andros Island in the western Bahamas. The patterns were both hexagonal and rectangular.
Brush showed Valentine the area. The water was only three to four feet deep. They made a close and careful inspection of the site. The structures appeared to be an organized sequence of enclosures - not the smaller, staked pens native fishermen constructed to retain turtles, conchs and sponges - but low walls of eoithic stones, within which patterns of squares and polygons had been set.
ONE RECTANGLE measured 100-by-60 feet. Its four corners were squared. Partitions rose out of its east and southeast ends. The floor plan duplicated almost exactly the floor plan of a Mayan ceremonial building thousands of miles away - Uxmal’s Temple of the Turtles in Yucatan.
Using probes, the men determined that the walls were at least nine feet deep, as far as the probes would reach. Layers of stone, laid block upon block, had been sealed together with mortar.
Valentine and Brush were certain; Craftsmen had made the structures, though they could not say who or when.
On a nearby key, other discoverers found what appeared to be an entire ancient ceremonial court - cut stone discs placed in exact patterns, ranks of half moons, stone fences which led into the jungle brush and turned off at right angles, setting off boundaries for what some probers envisioned as symbolic guidelines for the practice of once sacred but now unknown rites of worship. Parts of the patterns, however, were also similiar to remains left by Greek sponge gatherers in other parts of the world.
Shortly thereafter, 20 miles away, a dozen similar sites were found. Also, fragments of columns which looked like broken pillars. And southeast of Andres, in three to four fathoms, a vast underwater plateau was discovered - cut through with fresh water rivers, and pocketed by flooded caves in which stalactites had formed.
But stalactites need air in which to form. Valentine believed that the area was once part of a large land mass, above water, perhaps 300 to 700 feet higher - before the Pleistocene, before the earth dropped into the sea.
All of them vowed to keep the underwater finds a secret, until much more could be factually learned about their origins. But word trickled out anyway.
In February of 1969, a matronly devotee of the Edgar Cayce Foundation, Margaret Adams, brought two young epatriate adventurers to Valentine. They wanted to know about Atlantis. Their names were Robert Farro and Michael Grumley. Mrs. Adams entreated Valentine to take the men to the Bahamas sites. He did.
The next month, Count Pino Turollo came to Valentine and also asked to be guided to the place. Valentine took him.
He and Jacques Mayol had discovered a curious trenchline seaward of the Bimini rocks. The trench ran almost perfectly straight for hundreds of yards. It was 18 inches deep and 18 inches wide. It appeared to lie in some kind of juxtaposition with rock formations engulfed in turtle grass. In order to investigate the formations, they needed money. They didn’t have it.
Farro and Grumley wrote a book - “Atlantis, The Autobiography of a Search.”
Count Pino Turollo took underwater photographs which circulated around the world.
Then came the flood.
Robert Brush intercepted a boat bearing down on the Temple off Andros. The boat was loaded with dynamite. The people on the boat were going to blow up the Temple and search for the gold Cayce had said would be found below.
An American produced a thick book composed of parchment palm leaves which he said he had found in an Andros cave. On the 300 pages of parchment was written with sharp stylus a language unknown to the modern world, though it was similar to writings attributed to ancient Ceylon.
The man told Valentine that he had found the book in a mental tube. Valentine asked to see the tube. The man said he had discarded it.
Sure that the book had been a “plant” Valentine was later astounded to discover a massive inverted script E made of rock off Orange Key. The same symbol appears with frequency on the parchment pages found in the Andros cave.
Dimitri Rebikoff, inventor of underwater equipment, then photographed the entire rock wall off Bimini, fitted the individual pictures together as is done in aerial photography and used the underwater montage in a pamphlet advertising his school of marine technology. Point blank, he labeled the picture: “The Sunken Megalithic Atlantic Civilization at Bimini.”
WHAT ENSUED was verbal mayhem. Scientists in quest of publishable treaties made claims of discovery already claimed five times previously.
The internecine fighting finally took it toll. The Bahamian government refused to give anyone permits to excavate the sites. Brush and Valentine took flight from any publicity associated with the controversy.
And a silence finally consumed public interest in Atlantis.
In the spring of 1971, “Atlantis Undiscovered,” was written by Dr. Wyman Harrison, of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science.
The Bahama stone works, he wrote, are natural rock formations which fell into the sea and cracked, either from their own weight or from storm swells. The overall result is a field of blocks that at first sight appear to have been fitted together.
The rocks are no more enigmatic than any other outcropping of jointed limestone found throughout the area. The pillars, or columns are cement, probably from wood casks carried in a ship that sank there.
But at the same time, a young graduate student at the University of Miami Marine Laboratories also wrote a report about the finds. John Gifford had participated in several expeditions to the sites.
There was, to him, no question about the extraordinary regular pattern repeated in the underwater structures, and thee patterns were not found in the natural rock formations elsewhere through the islands.
There was, to him, no question about the extraordinary regular pattern repeated in the underwater structures, and the patterns were not found in the natural rock formations elsewhere through the islands.
Methodically, he undertook a series of tests. Foremost in his mind was a simple but iron-clad point of geological physics: If the top layer of rocks had been cracked by nature, the second layer would have been affected by the same force.
The title indicates the discipline that Gifford put into his work. “Geological Investigation and Survey of Submerged Feature off Paradise Point, Bimini, Bahamas.”
“The blocks are a geological enigma…None of the evidence conclusively rules out possible human intervention in their formation…Most importantly, if the blocks were produced by stresses acting in a vertical direction from below, the rock underlying the blocks would show some signs of jointing, perhaps not as well developed as the overlying blocks, but at least some small fractures. The area of bedrock exposed by us which lay directly beneath the interblock space, showed absolutely no sign of jointing, or cracking…”
Nonetheless, Gifford says: ‘Right now it looks slightly in favor of their being a natural phenomenon. We simply do not have conclusive evidence to the contrary. So it has to be 60 to 40 in favor of nature, at least until we learn more about what is down there.”
On that point, sanity prevails. Other scientists involved agree with Gifford. They also agree with Robert Brush, who says:
“One, a reputable archaeologist is needed to approach the Bahamian government, secure permission to thoroughly investigate the finds, spend a year or so of dedicated and concentrated work and determine finally what is actually down there.
“Some of it can be traced to colonial origin. Some is the work of Lucayan and Arawk Indians. But there are other patterns which cannot yet be traced to any known civilization.”
The skinny old man raised his balding head and looked out to sea. In his smoked and watery eyes, a dreamy gaze lingered - a dream of a land on which a civilization had thrived, and which had communicated with the rest of the world, for the gold plates he had found in a cave high in the Andes had come from the earliest Egyptian dynasties.
Perhaps a legacy from the time when the continents were all a single land mass. Or when cataclysm came and mountains rose out of the sea.
But the mountains had disappeared. The ancestors were gone. Atlantis had become the Atlantic…
