R1 This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 11th day of February, 1940, in accordance with request made by Mr. [2091] and Dr. [2246], Associate Members of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.

Time of Reading 10:30 to 10:50 A. M. Eastern Standard Time.

1. HLC: You will have before you [2246] and [2091], present in this room, together with their interest in Carmerson Corporation which owns and holds leases on some three thousand acres of property located in Smith County, Texas, midway between Big Sandy in Upshur County and Winona in Smith County with the Sabine River forming the Northern boundary of this property. On the south central portion of this property a well has been drilled known as the Carolyn Hastings No. 1, to a depth of 4931 feet. You will answer the questions which they have prepared regarding this property, as I ask them:

2. EC: Yes, we have the enquiring minds of [2246] and [2091]; together with the interest in the property indicated; also the information which has been given through this channel regarding the securing, or regarding oil and gas being produced on this property in commercial quantities.

3. As we find, there have been associations and connections made such that, with the individuals being considered as operators upon this property, we may expect the successful operations. These will be MORE than sufficient quantities in production to insure the income sufficient for the development of other properties in the environs, as well as the successful activities.

4. Ready for questions.

5. (Q) Carmerson Corporation has now sufficient funds to carry out the second of the alternative suggestions given in previous Readings of July 30th [1561-2, 3] and August 2nd, 1938 [1561-4, 5], for […] and [2246], namely, the suggestion to drill a new well to the Woodbine Sand, 600 feet to the North, bearing East of the Carolyn Hastings No. 1 well. Do the directions given in the previous Readings still hold good, or is there something to be added to or changed in them? (A) These as we find have not changed. As was indicated then, the disturbances in the lower formations will not prove to be of as indeterminate nature as in the No. 1. We would hold to the directions which have been indicated, in the new operations.

6. (Q) In choosing a drilling contractor, would it be better to select an outside contractor, such as J. S. Young, or Hollandsworth Brothers, or Thresher, or would it be advisable to accept the offer to drill of H. L. Hunt, who is a powerful neighbor, or to seek the cooperation of the Sun Oil Company, for a deep test on our place, as they also own adjoining oil leases? Which drilling outfit will be more advisable for us? (A) As we find, as has been indicated, that individual in which there has been the promise, or the tentative promise for the activities in the drilling of the operations would be the more advisable.

7. (Q) To which one do you refer? (A) The one where the half way promise has already been made.

8. (Q) Hunt and Young have both said they would drill. Which one is preferable? (A) Hunt would be that one that has been promised the most; would be the most desirable.

9. (Q) In sinking a well 600 feet to the North, bearing East of the Carolyn Hastings No. 1 well, at what depth should we begin to core so as not to miss the most productive oil sand? What would be the thickness of the oil sand we should encounter? (A) As we find, the thickness here will be at least a hundred feet; or ninety-nine and one-half feet, to be more exact, - and this should be begun at the four thousand and seventy-nine (4,079) feet.

10. (Q) Since mortgage payments and lease rentals are now paid up to date, have we anything to fear from interests around us in trickery as seemed to be indicated in the last Readings? (A) These as we find, with the individual as indicated that has been thoroughly considered, would not indicate that there would be as much of the trickery, or of the attempt to hinder in any way or manner.

11. (Q) When oil is found, would it be more advisable to sell out or engage in production or to sell leases to operating companies in which Carmerson Corporation would retain an interest? (A) As we find, AFTER the second well, then the greater or better proposition may be obtained. We would not consider as to becoming an OPERATIVE organization with the interests that are held in the various vicinities. For, as has been indicated, this will in a manner extend and open a new field.

12. (Q) Are there any other specific directions which might be given, which will be helpful to the success of those engaged in this enterprise? Is there a time within which drilling should start? (A) Just as soon as the conditions necessary may be met, we would begin. The sooner, the better.

13. (Q) A friend of Mrs. Hastings has an instrument for detecting the pressure of oil and if the test is favorable, money will be forthcoming for a deep well. Should we go ahead with our present finances for the shallow test (5000 feet or above) without spending time now to try to enlist the cooperation of others for more ambitious development at present? (A) As we find, there will be found the production in the five thousand feet operations. If there is the desire that there be the more cooperative force in the greater amounts to be used for a test, it would be very well to use the instrument, - for it will indicate a presence of oil in large quantities at a very deep test - as has been indicated.

14. (Q) Any other suggestions at this time? (A) These will follow as progress is made, if so desired. There is only needed the activity, as we find in the present.

R1. 3/27/40 [2091]‘s letter to EC:

Dear Mr. Cayce:

Our latest news about the oil situation is that Mr. Hunt, the proposed driller, has backed out on us. It appears that the promise to drill at $2.00 per foot came from his son, Hassie Hunt, but Mr. H. L. Hunt, Sr., does not seem to want to have a new field brought in in our locality. Dr. [2246]‘s explanation is that Mr. Hunt would like us to get tired of our property so that it may fall to him later. All this does not appear to agree with the reading, but I am to see Hassie Hunt, the son, next Saturday, and other possibilities may open up.

Failing Hunt, there is a possibility of getting Mr. J. S. Young, or some other driller, to drill for us to the shallow level, or to get a certain Dr. Louis C. Billotte and the driller associated with him, to clean out the Carolyne Hastings No. 1. I met Dr. Billotte in New York through a mutual friend and he seems to think that he and his associates could open up the Carolyne Hastings well by the use of cable tools instead of the rotary drill. Perhaps we should have a check reading on this, and we should be very glad to do so if you had any free time between now and the time you come to New York.

I am leaving for Texas tomorrow night, my address there being care of Dr. [2246], P.O. Box …, Big Sandy, Texas. We shall be having important meetings to explore and decide upon the various possibilities, probably in or near Tyler. If you would telegraph or write to me or to Dr. [2246] by air mail, the communication would reach us in time. Our important meetings will probably take place between Saturday and Tuesday next. If we do not hear from you, I shall look forward to seeing you in New York and perhaps not make irrevocable decisions before then.

The friends at the farm are anxious to have you set aside at least a day while you are here to come out to …
