This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 13th day of November, 1938, in accordance with request made by the self - Mr. [1745], Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., via sister, Mrs. [1100].
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno.]
Time of Reading 11:10 to 11:30 A. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, Texas.
-
GC: You will go over this body carefully, examine it thoroughly, and tell me the conditions you find at the present time; giving the cause of the existing conditions, also suggestions for help and relief of this body. You will answer the questions he has submitted, as I ask them:
-
EC: Yes, we have the body, [1745].
-
Now as we find, while there are disturbing conditions that are very aggravating, these may be eliminated if there is the proper course and activity regarding same.
-
But without these corrections, we may find more serious disturbances arising. For these as we find are of the nature that the vitality is being reduced, and there is the production of those disturbances that with this vital force reduced so may become of a constitutional nature, - such as to be a disorder hard to deal with.
-
These are conditions as we find them with this body, [1745].
-
In giving the disturbances, there would be a little variation from the ordinary form. For we have two distinct conditions, and these as we find at times work one against the other, and at other times cause an overtaxing such that one becomes complemented, or is part of the other disturbance.
-
First, from the condition which existed in some time back, there has been an unbalancing in the pelvic axis; so that with long standing or any great activity in which there is lifting, pushing or the like as a part of the exercise, the body becomes greatly unbalanced through the pelvic, sacral and ileac plexus area.
-
This produces a great deal of disturbance to the nervous system in the form of exhaustion, as well as production of irritation that causes a great deal of acidity by the very nature of the poor eliminations at times through the system.
-
Then we have a disturbance from an old cold or throat disturbance, and there is such an engorgement in the back portion of the nasal passages that the antrums become disturbed, - but these are more in the nature of the back portion of the nasal passages, producing a growth that is a part of the adenoid condition or portion of same.
-
This with continued irritation produces a condition in the thorax, and through the stomach itself, by the poisons, as to weaken as well as become a part of the disturbance through the tiring OUT of the body, - from those subluxations in the lumbar axis.
-
These, of course, disturb the circulation, producing a form of anemia; with a tendency for an acid reaction.
-
With continued conditions of the kind, we may produce disturbance in the digestive organs that would become, through natural forces of the superacidity, lacerations, ulcerations or disturbances of the nature.
-
These are the conditions as we find them with this body.
-
As we find, in removing these disturbances two specific reactions should be a part of the activity for same.
-
First there should be a sufficient number of the osteopathic adjustments in the lumbar and sacral area to produce a normal balance in the pelvic position, and thus making for both limbs being of near the same length; as well as coordinating the rest of the system with these corrections, which naturally cause, along all of the centers, - as in the 9th dorsal, 4th and 5th dorsal, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th cervical, - strains at one time or another.
-
The particular adjustments in the upper dorsal and the cervicals should be for better eliminations and drainage for the whole of the system, THROUGH the alimentary canal.
-
This should require not more than sixteen such adjustments. Best that they be taken in periods; that is, half of them taken at one period, two every week until eight are taken; then rest a week and have eight more taken, see?
-
In the meantime begin immediately with the use of an inhalant as would be prepared in this manner:
-
To 4 ounces of Grain Alcohol (only grain alcohol), in an 8 ounce container, preferably a dark bottle, with two openings prepared through the large cork in same, in which there may be the tubes through which the fumes may be inhaled (neither of the vents extending into the solution, you see, but in the space above same), - add - IN THE ORDER NAMED:
Oil of Eucalyptus…20 minims, Fusion or a Saturated Solution of Benzosol…15 minims,* Compound Tincture of Benzoin…10 minims, Rectified Oil of Turp…5 minims, Tolu in Solution…30 minims.
When this is to be used, at least twice each day, oftener if there is the opportunity, shake the solution well before either of the corks would be removed from the inlets into the space above the solution. After shaking, open both. Inhale deep into the nostril, then deep into the lung. Then inhale again in either side of the nostril, then again into the throat. It would not be as a spray, you see, nor the properties sprayed into the throat or nasal passages direct, - but only the fumes from same would be inhaled.
-
Then with the diet, - be mindful that there are no fried foods.
-
And we would take Codiron twice each day; two pellets at the meal time, for a tonic and for building up the system.
-
Do not take great quantities of cheese and macaroni with potatoes and white bread; no two of these at the same meal, you see, and very little at any time.
-
Keep plenty of fruits and vegetables, and beware of the fried foods, as indicated.
-
Do these and we will bring nearer to normal conditions, correcting these disturbances, giving the physical body better reaction and relieving the general mental strain.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Is there an obstruction of my nasal air passage? (A) Rather as indicated, in the bulbular end there is the tendency for this to become a growth. Hence the use of those properties as indicated in the inhalant, to reduce this condition. This being taken as a cleanser, of course, necessitates that there be kept better eliminations; which may be improved by the use of fruit and raw vegetables and the like in the diet; and the corrections as would be taken at the same period.
-
We are through for the present.
- [GD’s note: See 318-5 on 9/14/26, inhalant in croup cup for baby, substituting 1 minim Pure Creosote for 10 minims Benzosol.]

R1. 11/21/38 [1745]‘s letter to EC:
…, Texas
Dear Mr. Cayce:
I received the two readings and your letter. I am very proud of the readings. The Life reading is very beautiful. I hope the suggestions in the physical reading will relieve me of my fatigue so that my thoughts and gestures will all be positive.
In discussing the reading with my Mother, she states and is very emphatic that my birth hour is P.M. instead of A.M. as stated in the reading. I will be grateful if you will ask Miss Davis to look over her notes and see if there was an error in transcription. (No offense intended that it is possibly an error on her part.)
I consider myself very fortunate in coming in contact with you, and I wish to become an active member in this district or section, and will follow your suggestions carefully. Please advise me just what I can do.
Dr. J. B. Alexander [J. R. Alexander, D.O.], Esperson Bldg., started treatments Friday the 18th. He stated that you were absolutely correct in your diagnosis. He will be very glad to cooperate with you in every way possible. Mrs. [1100], while here on a visit, received treatments from him, and I think she will join me in saying that he is very proficient in his profession.
Please advise me as to a good book on reincarnation. One with definite statements and positive thoughts - I don’t like generalities. I have read several, but they talk about everything else under the sun, and stay on the subject very little. I am very critical, please excuse this fault.
With best wishes for you and yours, I am
Very truly yours

R3. 2/9/39 [1745]‘s letter to EC:
…, Texas
Dear Mr. Cayce:
Enclosed please find application form [for son [1671]‘s Life Reading] filled out as per your request.
Thanks for your letter and interest. I think I am responding to treatment. Any way I feel better; and Mrs. [1100] tells me that Dr. Alexander is the best Osteopathic doctor that has ever treated her. That MUST be a mighty good recommendation for him.
There is much that I would like to know regarding myself and three boys, but at this time, I had better confine myself within my means, and wait ‘til another time.
Hoping that much information will be given in my boy’s Life Reading, and that you and yours are well, I am
Very truly yours
R4. 5/12/41 [1745]‘s and [1100]‘s letters to EC:
…, Texas
Dear Mr. Cayce:
In Nov. 1938 I obtained a physical reading from you, which gave in detail my condition.
I took this reading to Dr. J. R. Alexander here and asked him if he would treat me according to the instructions (to Osteopath) in this reading. He agreed, after examination, that the information given in the reading, was correct, and that he would follow the instructions. After taking his treatments for the stated period of time; I did not have much relief, and agreed with him to continue treatments over a period of nearly a year. I then gave up treatments.
My condition is very distressful at present. Please take a check reading as soon as possible, but as Sunday is the only possible time that I can be at home in the day time I wonder if it would inconvenience you too greatly to take it on this day, May 18th. If so I will be in a receptive mood all day Sunday on this date.
Please have the following questions asked:
Did Dr. Alexander follow instructions given in first reading?
Does intense pain in left side near ninth rib indicate gastric ulcer?
I am being treated by Dr. Lamar [T. J. Lamar, D.C.], a chiropractor, for spastic colon. If ulcer exists, is it advisable to continue treatment by Dr. Lamar?
Dr. Julius McBride osteopath attended my wife [1045]
during her illness and death. I like him very much. Would you advise treatments by him?
- Dr. Lester Farquharson [Lester M. Farquharson, D.O.] another Osteopathic physician I know quite well. I would like you to advise me if his service would be beneficial? Which of the two would you suggest?
If neither of these will do will you please suggest some one who will follow instructions given.
- Any further instructions for this body at the present time?
With best wishes for you and yours, I’m
Very truly yours [1745]

Miss Gladys Davis % Assn for Research & Enlightenment. Virginia Beach, Va.
Dear Miss Davis:
I am having considerable trouble with my physical condition at this time, and Xrays - Fluoroscopes show no cause for such pains. I had a PHYSICAL reading by Mr. Cayce in the fall of 1938, possibly Oct. or Nov. Talking this over with my sister, Mrs. [1100], who is in … at this time, she suggested that I write you, and that you would possibly give me a transcript of the part of this reading which describes my condition at that time. Using this as a basis the M.D.’s can possibly arrive at a proper diagnosis.
With best of wishes, I am
Very truly yours

ASSOCIATION FOR RESEARCH AND ENLIGHTENMENT Incorporated Virginia Beach, Virginia
Dear Mr. [1745]
Enclosed is the information you recently requested.
It may interest you to know that we now have a physician preparing an abstract dealing with a number of cases of apparent Neurasthenia [See Par. R12 below]. There seems to be a definite pattern to the treatments based on identical areas of involvement. Already a number of individuals who did not have readings have benefitted through these same treatments.
Sincerely yours, Hugh Lynn Cayce

Mr. Hugh Lynn Cayce Assn. For Research & Enlightenment Virginia Beach, Virginia
Dear Sir:
I tried all the drug houses in Houston trying to obtain Benzosol, finally wrote the Metz laboratories, and am enclosing their reply. If they do not “supply” Benzosol, I just cannot get any.
I was unable to obtain Benzosol when Mr. Cayce recommended this inhalant; so I had to go back to the medical doctors, who now, after ten years of treatment, tell me that they have thrown the medical books at me and can do me no good. They claim that I have an irritable colon with diverticulae, caused by nervous fear and worry, and that no medication will do any good.
Please advise me if Benzosol can be obtained through you.
Very truly yours, [1745]

Mr. [1745] …, Texas
Dear Mr. [1745]
Thank you for your letter of October 18th.
We have ordered the inhalant to be sent to you from Meredith’s Drug Company at Virginia Beach. They will bill you for it direct.
Benzosol is no longer being made, as you pointed out. Meredith’s Drug Company has a bottle of the crystals and can make up the inhalant for you when you wish to have it. From this point on, you may write them direct or we will be glad to handle it for you.
Do let us know if there are any other ways in which we may be of assistance.
Sincerely yours, Hugh Lynn Cayce [HLC/dm]

R12. 9/15/49 Neurasthenia Abstract:
NEURASTHENIA
According to
EDGAR CAYCE’S PHYSICAL READINGS Survey for Advisory Board of Physicians ASSOCIATION FOR RESEARCH AND ENLIGHTENMENT, INCORPORATED Virginia Beach, Virginia
Abstract #5 [First four Abstracts were: Deafness (1), Multiple Sclerosis (2), Epilepsy (3), Arthritis (4), Neurasthenia (5); 3/1/47, 3/23/46, 6/1/46, 12/10/47 & 9/15/49.]
The following is an abstract by Samuel E. Benesch [volunteer staff member, student at Johns Hopkins U.] of 19 cases for whose neurasthenic ailments Edgar Cayce gave 26 psychic readings.
There were 4 male, median age 37 yrs., 15 female, median age 45 yrs.
Edgar Cayce’s findings were as follows:
SENSORY and HEAD INVOLVEMENTS; i.e., distorted vision, bitter taste, ringing in ears, burning in eyes, headaches, tear ducts dry, tic, sinus trouble, catarrh, pressure at base of skull, dripping from nose - ONE or MORE of these were explicitly mentioned in ALL cases EXCEPT 2 ([2085], [2515]).
DIGESTIVE DISTURBANCES - ALL EXCEPT 5 ([57], [667], [1381], [2535], [5389]).
Improper red to white ratio in blood - occurred in 5 ([3], [565], [1745], [2591], [2596]) Acid blood ([5], [1745]) 2 Sensitivity to outside influences 4 ([3], [5], [565], 2596]) Insomnia ([515], [807], [1711], [2591]) 4 Trembling, tiredness in lower extremities 4 ([667], [807], [2535], [2596]) Anxiety 8 ([325], [436], [515], [565], [1381], [2515], [2596], [5389]) Irregular Pulse ([565], [2515], [5389]) 3 Respiratory involvement 6 ([3], [57], [667], [1381], [2591], [2596]) Organs involved (other than sensory): Liver 10 ([3], [325], [515], [565], [667], [807], [2085], [2515], [2591], [5389]) Kidneys ([3], [5], [565], [2596]) 3 Pancreas 6 ([3], [565], [807], [838], [2085], [2591]) Spleen ([565], [807], [2085], [2591]) 4 Adrenals ([515], [2515]) 2 Thyroid ([5], [667], [1381], [1711], [2515]) 5 Pineal ([515]) 1 Brain ([2596]) 1
The Cayce treatments were (other than osteopathy):
Tonic and purifier for digestive system 7 ([3], [515], [565], [838], [2085], [2515], [2591]) Mayblossom Bitters ([436]) 1 Atomidine ([807], [1711], [2515]) 3 Purifier for blood ([1711]) 1 Gold and Sodium Bromide ([2596]) 1 Epsom Salts Pack to right side ([325]) 1 Castor Oil Pack over liver ([325]) 1 Inhalant ([1745]) 1 Cabinet Sweats ([515], [838]) 2 Colonics ([838], [2591], [5389]) 3 Low sinusoidal ray: 4 ([5], 2nd-3rd dorsal, 4th lumbar; ([57]; 1-5 cervical, 9 dorsal; ([436], lumbar area; ([1381], 2-3-10-12 dorsal) Radio-Active Appliance ([436], [515], [1381], [1711]) 4 Infra red to digestive tract ([57], [838]) 2
DIET WAS EMPHATICALLY STRESSED
In general it was to be alkaline, eliminating, low in starch and sweets, NO fried food at all, plenty of citrus juices, green leafy vegetables, little meat and that to be fish, fowl and lamb. “Eat to Live” gives some menus into which the above easily fits (The Edgar Cayce Publishing Company, 35 cents ea. or 3 for $1.00).
SPINAL INVOLVEMENTS: The following grouping indicates that at least one vertebra in the designated area was DIRECTLY involved:
1st to 4th cervical 12 1st to 5th dorsal 12 7th to 10th dorsal 12 2nd to 4th lumbar 12 Sacral 5 Coccyx 2
In 19 cases the 3rd cervical was directly involved 10 times, by reflex 8 times; 9th dorsal 10 times, by reflex 5 times; 4th lumbar 10 times, by reflex 2 times.
IN READING 3676-1 [3676-1] for a 7-year-old boy born deaf, deficient in TASTE and VISION (all sensory faculties), use of the Wet Cell Appliance with gold was indicated. The directions said, in part:
”…One day attaching the small plate to the 3RD CERVICAL, the next day to the (9TH DORSAL, and the next day to the 4TH LUMBAR. Be sure to rotate the attachments in this order. THESE ARE THE 3 centers through which there is the activity of the kundaline FORCES THAT ACT AS SUGGESTIONS TO THE SPIRITUAL FORCES FOR DISTRIBUTION THROUGH THE 7 CENTERS OF THE BODY.”
A TYPICAL DEFINITION by EC of neurasthenia is “…an incoordination between the cerebrospinal and sympathetic nerve systems… This unfits the physical forces for coordination, then, with the mental urges (436-1).”
CASES [3676] AND [436] indicate the METAPHYSICAL MECHANISM involved in many cases of neurasthenia. OSTEOPATHIC MANIPULATIONS were recommended to areas indicated.
(The above abstract on neurasthenia was prepared by Mr. Samuel E. Benesch, student at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Md.)
RESULTS on the 19 cases tabulated to date by Gladys Davis, covering a period ranging from 6 to 26 years ago:
CURED - 10 ([436], [565], [667], [838], [1381], [1745], [2085], [2515], [2596], [5389]) HELPED - ([57], [515], [1711]) 3 OTHER COMPLICATIONS - 5 ([57], cataracts; [325], cancer; [436], epilepsy; [807], colitis; [2591], sinusitis, hay fever, anemia) TREATMENT NOT FOLLOWED - ([57]) 1
DIED - ([57], 9 yrs. later; [325], 16 yrs. later) 2 ADDRESS UNKNOWN ([3], [5], [2535]) 3 NO REPORT - ([3], [5], [807], [2535], [2591]) 5
THE FOLLOWING CASE NUMBERS of Edgar Cayce readings were used in preparing the above abstract:
3-1 565-1 2085-1 5-1 667-14 2515-1 57-1 807-1 2535-1 325-3 & 28 838-3 2591-1 436-1 & 4 1381-1 2596-1 515-1 1711-1 5389-1 1745-2
R13. 9/16/49 GD sent above Abstract to Dr. Henry George III for “go signal”.
R14. 10/18/49 Notice of the five Abstracts available - Deafness (1), 3/23/46; Multiple Sclerosis (2), 6/1/46; Epilepsy (3), 3/1/47; Arthritis (4), 12/10/47; Neurasthenia (5), 9/15/49, were sent to 312 physicians. See under 4083-1 Reports.
R15. 11/7/57 Sister, Mrs. [1100]‘s report: “My brother, [1745], died about two weeks ago with coronary thrombosis.”
R16. 9/26/61 GD’s note: Wm. Meredith, Meredith Drug Co., Va. Beach, tells me that the trade name for Benzosol is GUIACOL BENZOATE. He is still trying to get some for his own use. I gave him the name of Eimer & Amend, 18 E. 3rd St., NYC., crude drug house, to see if they have it.
R17. 2/25/75 GD’s note: Mr. Ingram of Ingram Pharmacy, Va. Beach, Va., tells me he still has some of the Guiacol Benzoate on hand from which he fills the prescriptions for inhalants, as per Edgar Cayce.
