This psychic reading given by Edgar Cayce at his office, 115 West 35th Street, Virginia Beach, Va., this 13th day of January, 1926, in accordance with request made by his parents, Mr. [779] and Mrs. [780].

Born December 4, 1925, 10:15 P.M., in Selma, Alabama. Time of Reading … Street, 2:30 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. …, Ala.

1. GC: You will give the relation of this entity and the Universe, and the Universal Forces, giving the conditions that are as personalities, latent and exhibited, in the present life. Also the former appearances in the earth’s plane, giving time, place, and the name, and that in that life which built or retarded the development for the entity, giving the abilities of the present entity and that to which it may attain, and how.

2. EC: Yes, we have the entity here, and that as the personalities as may be exhibited in the present earth’s plane, and the appearances in the earth’s plane, from which the personality and individuality in the present plane may be gained, with those urges as are received from same, and as to how these (the urges) will manifest in the present earth’s plane, for, as we see, this entity in the present earth’s plane has yet to exhibit those personalities as are latent in this physical developing body, yet one that takes those positions in the present earth’s plane from Jupiter, with Venus and Mercury, and with the adverse influence in Mars and in Saturn, with the assistance of the influences of Uranus and Neptune in the present earth’s plane.

3. Then, the urges as will be seen:

4. One that will have the strong constitution in the developing stage.

5. One that will need care and attention through the early development in the care of the digestive system.

6. One that love will ever rule in the earth’s plane in the present life, will [if] that of the ennobling influence [will] go with same.

7. One that will have the desires to seek those of the Why’s of every condition pertaining to that as applied to numbers, and will be led into the right way through the mathematical application of good conditions in the life; that is, in the training of the young manhood, and baby and childhood, ever put those conditions before the child of the mathematical problems of the forces of love and of that which causes good in the life to be lived in the earth’s plane.

8. One that will, in early manhood, make that of the choice in mating. One that should seek in such that one born in May, see? for with the influences that come in each, these would be of the better nature.

9. One that will seek in the early life the forces as are manifest in occult and in the mystic, and applying same in that of the religious force and service.

10. Then, the abilities to which the entity shows that urge lie in that of the mathematics, and in the ability to make monies. Then guide same in its developing stage in that way in which the ennobling influence will be the greater urge in the home life.

11. One that will not be susceptible easily to any of those contagious diseases of childhood - needing the care of the digestion being watched close, that same, physically, may well MANIFEST that spiritual DEVELOPMENT, as is seen that is capable of being manifest in this entity.

12. As to the appearances:

13. In the one before this we find the entity entered the earth’s plane only for a very short period, and is well named in the present, for then, before, the name Thomas Cayce, see? [Edgar Cayce’s little brother, Thomas Cayce, was born 11/19/1892, in Christian County, Kentucky, and died 10 days later.]

14. In the one before this we find in that day when the peoples were attempting to throw off the yoke of the oppression under that in Charles the 1st. The entity then in the aide to the ruler, or that man in power, and the name of Buell. The entity developed in that period, gaining from those influences of that leader the entity then followed. From that appearance, the urge towards those things that pertain to religion will be found in the present earth’s plane.

15. In the one before this we find in the land of the Roman rule; when the persecution of the peoples that followed the Nazarene, the entity then in that of one of those persecuted, coming to this place from the Port in the Sea - a follower then of that One preaching this new doctrine Paul?]. Then in the name of Isal. The entity gained in the latter of the sojourn in the earth’s plane, and as will be seen in the present, the ability to understand persecution, or the inability to take PHYSICAL punishment for conditions that to the entity should not be punished for; yet capable of standing PHYSICAL and MENTAL pain when in a just cause.

16. In the one before this, we find in the days when the nomads overran the Persian rule. The entity then the next in the command when the nomad leader was slain, and the entity then in the name of Ojhida, and the entity then lost in that the entity became selfish in the aggrandizement of personal interests, yet in the persecutions that followed in the latter days, the entity repented much, and the urge in the present will be found the ability to forget and forgive. 17. In the one before this we find in that Egyptian country when the great division came in that land, and the entity in that of those who assisted those who were banished, and in the name of Ashal. [Period of Ra-Ta?]

18. Then, as to that which the entity may accomplish, and how: First that necessity of that training “in the way youth should go, for when it is old it will not depart from same.” The urge being, then, to accept and to take that in the way that same is presented. The position should be in that of the minister or teacher, and the entity would give much to many. Keeping, then, ever in that way, making self first wholly acceptable unto Him, the Giver of all good and perfect gifts, for in Him there is life, and life shineth out even unto those who sit in darkness.

R1. 1/23/26 Father [779]‘s letter to EC: ”…Again we want to first thank you for the greatest, the best and the sweetest reading [318] to me I ever read. I shall do all in my power to help bring about the points as given. You can not imagine how good we feel over it. Yes, somehow I had already been telling people that [318] was going to be a great preacher. I don’t [know] why I got that but I did, and I truly hope he will as I know of no greater service a man can give than preaching and teaching the gospel of Jesus Christ the son of the living God and the Savior of the world. Too, I am pleased to note that he will seek the forces as are manifest in occult and in the mystic, and applying same in a religious service. Taking the reading as a whole it seems to me that if I can so live and keep him in the proper environments as he grows up, there are so many ways to make his life beautiful and good. O! How good this will make us feel. This may too be in the other children readings that I hope we may be able to get before very long…

“Yes, very strange about [318]‘s reading - as to appearance before this, but I believe every word of it Cayce, and too believe it to be true as many of the others given that I know are true. I am VERY, VERY anxious to know more about this, and about the idea you have in mind and would like to prove. I am sure this will be worth while. Mrs. […], [780] and I are anxious that you will in short time be in position tell us all about it, and if there is anything we can help you on why we will be only too glad to do so. Any information you have or may receive please let us know same - will you? We will appreciate same. I shall be glad if you will tell me when your brother Thomas Cayce was born and with what did he die? I know this could not have been many years from that time till the birth of [318]…

“[318] is sweet as he can be and my how he is growing. About 1/2 lbs. a week now, he still takes both the bottle and mother. The only trouble he has as given in the physical and life reading is the digestive system. We are looking after that as close as possible. He is already so cute and does things different from most kids his age, such as laughing, cooing, and lifting his head with OUT aid. This he has BEEN doing since he was two weeks old, and strong as a little man…”

R3. 8/7/27 Father [779]‘s ltr.: “You know, of all the Life Readings I have read, this one of [318] is the one that means the most to me. I don’t know why.” [GD’s note: He had written on 12/6/25: “I am so proud of him and hope he will grow up to be a real man and be as much help to mankind, or to honor and glorify the work of God and Christ, as you his namesake.”]

R5. 5/15/28 Father [779]‘s ltr.: “The boy [318] is fine as can be. He begs all the time to ride in airplane and street cars.”

R6. 7/17/35 Miss [259]‘s ltr.: “Going to and from work I passed little [318] several days ago. He walked down the street with me. ‘Are you kin to me?’ he wanted to know. When I told him no, he said, ‘I like you just the same.’”

R7. 1/2/38 He wrote his first ltr. to EC, wishing EC would come to see him, also that he could visit EC in Va. Beach.

R8. 1/26/38 “Fishing is my favorite sport. I did not get to do much fishing [last summer while visiting relatives] in Okla., because it was too dry. There are four things I like to do best and they are eating, sleeping, fishing, and going to the picture show.”

R9. 2/3/38 EC’s ltr.: “Was good to have yours of the 26th and to know that you plan on coming this summer and helping me catch some of the fish. As I said, you can plan to go fishing any time, for I have a very good pier right in the back yard and sometimes catch some pretty good fish, anything from as large as your three fingers to three and four pounds, and many kinds. Then, when we go to the Bay or out on the ocean, well, you may catch anything up to a shark. So, I’ll be looking for you - will get the lines all rigged up and the reels all greased and ready for you.

“Well, your likes are pretty good. This is the best place to sleep you ever saw. You may find something to eat if the garden is pretty good (and will try to get that going), and we can catch some fish. For me there is nothing I like better to eat than good fresh fish. And we have a very good picture show here [Roland Court] and many not so far away [in Norfolk]. So, all the things you like to do will be right at hand and we’ll try to make you have a good time. Then, too, we can get better acquainted - and hope you will like that.”

R10. 3/22/38 Young [318]‘s ltr.: “How are you? I am ashamed of myself for not writing you sooner, but I kept putting it off. I am glad that I am writing you now.”

R11. 4/1/38 EC’s ltr.: “Good to have yours of the 22nd. Am always glad to hear from you. Yes, am sure with your school work and the things you have to do about home, it is inclined to make you put off things you intend to do. Guess you will have to just make a rule for yourself. I think you would find that a nice way to get out of the habit of putting off things to do - that you intend to do but put off. Set a given day each week, or each month, or whatever time you want to elapse between your letter writing, and on that day make it a rule to write your letters whether there is little or much to say. Then you will get in the habit of doing that on time. Habit is usually making one habit take the place of another. Try that and see how it works out.”

R12. 11/30/39 Father [779]‘s ltr.: “[318] is in Jr. High School. He likes it fine and makes very good grades - nothing less than 90 in last month’s work.”

R13. 8/7/41 Young [318], without his father’s knowledge, requested a Ck. Physical [318-7] and a Ck. Life [318-8], submitting these questions for his Ck. Life Rdg.: “My Life Rdg. said ‘the abilities lie in mathematics and in the ability to make monies.’ Explain this more fully. What other position could I be successful at besides a minister or teacher?”

R14. 8/20/41 See Ck. Life Rdg. 318-8 saying that if he tried any other vocation “it would mean only a shifting from one thing to another - in the whole life experience.”

R15. 8/28/41 “I appreciate your offer to help me in college, but it will be some time before I will be there.”

R16. 9/28/41 “I hope winter comes early this year because I like it so.”

R17. 11/2/41 “We sure did enjoy Hugh Lynn’s and his wife’s visit and wish they could have stayed longer. I did appreciate Hugh Lynn explaining parts of my Life Rdg.

“When HL was here he said he kept a record of his dreams for a good many years. I told him I thought I would try it. Tell him I started Friday.”

R18. 3/29/42 “I am not so good in algebra. A friend is coaching me in it. She has helped me very much…”

R19. 4/9/42 EC’s ltr.: “How are you? Wish you might have been with me a day or so ago; was out fishing for a few minutes while resting, and were they in the humor to bite! Caught some real nice ones - perch, white striped; and Sunday I caught mullet, catfish, eel and the like. Was lots of fun. Thought of you. Hope you will make it up here when school is out.

“Think your grades are fine. Look good to me. Thanks for sending them on. Keep up the good work. One has to get the hang of algebra, else it is a hard subject. Haven’t forgotten how I struggled with it.

“Most places seem to do pretty good with the practice blackout; they have them here now and then without warning, to see what might happen if they really do have to have a warning. Some seem to expect this coast to have a raid. Going pretty heavy in the war. Seems bad there couldn’t have been sent help to Bataan. Those boys certainly have put up a fight.

“Think you will find keeping a record of your dreams will be very interesting, and really helpful; you will be able to interpret many of them after a few months, for all have a meaning. There are three kinds, and one has to learn to know how to classify them. But more of that later if you are interested.

“It has turned cold here today. Wish it would rain, as I just planted my strawberries and they need a good shower to insure a stand and to get them off in the right direction. Planted a few fruit trees also - they need a nice warm rain.

“Write again soon. Give my love to your mother and father, and with all good wishes, Edgar Cayce.”

R20. 7/8/42 Young [318]‘s ltr.: “Here is that letter I should have written several months ago. I hope you have been getting along alright.

“I passed all my subjects and this fall I enter Senior High School. My final averages were: Business 85, Civics 85, English 83, Health 90, Math 74, and Spelling 85.

“I have a job now. I am an usher at the … Theater. I started the first Sat. in May and worked just on Sats. and Suns. I have a regular 36 hr. a week job now, for the past two weeks. I like my work very much.

“Wish I could have come up there this summer but it is so hard to get there and back now.”

R21. 12/5/42 “I am 17 now, and in another yr. Uncle Sam may draft me. We have voluntary military training at Senior High. Nearly all the boys joined it. We drill on Tues. and Thurs. from 3 to 4.”

R23. 4/3/43 Father [779]‘s ltr: “[318] came home a few evenings ago with a copy of the N.Y. Times review of THERE IS A RIVER. His music teacher gave it to him, knowing he was named for you.”

R24. 4/5/43 Young [318]‘s ltr.: “I am still taking my piano lessons and my music teacher says I can read notes real good.”

R25. 5/30/43 “I failed algebra for this semester and will have to make it up in Summer School.”

R26. 6/1/43 He obtained a Ck. Physical, 318-9. Par. 5-A [in 318-9] “Not in this experience,” when he asked if he had ever broken a rib on the right side of chest.

R27. 8/1/43 “I am still taking my piano lessons. I have also been taking voice and singing lessons for a week. She said I had a fine voice. I am going to be in the church choir (Baritone).”

R28. 8/22/43 “I passed my algebra subject that I had to make up. Regular school starts on Sept. 13th and I will be in the 11th grade. I will take English; American History, Alabama; Latin American History, Music, History, and Art. I will also be in the Glee Club.”

R29. 9/2/43 EC’s ltr.: “The Sept. Coronet article has made the requests for information about triple in the last ten days, so have literally hundreds of letters I haven’t been able to answer yet, though I have two new secretaries.”

R30. 10/9/43 “We heard from HL for the first time today. He has landed somewhere, but we don’t know any more than that. It seems the place is very nice, as he remarked in his letter…

“I got a chance to fish about 15 minutes this a.m. They were biting fine and when I got in the house I found my new stenographer waiting for me, so I put the fish back…

“I have two stenographers, but they are not much good in keeping up with the four or five hundred letters a day.”

R31. 3/13/44 Young [318]‘s ltr.: “Two boys in my home room got their calls to report for their physical examinations on March 16th. I hope to get into the Navy, because I think I would like it better than the Army. I am sure the Navy or Army will do me lots of good but the only thing I hate about going is that I won’t be able to finish school. But when I stop and think I guess we all must sacrifice something we would like to have or do in times like this. If I am taken I I am not going to come back and finish school when the war ends. I want to travel a lot when the war ends and when everything is peaceful I would like to live in England and Paris, France for a few years. Then I would like to come back to the U.S. and go to Hollywood and try to get into pictures. Before I do any of those things I would like to visit you and study your work with you and see if that is what I want to do. I realize now that it’s about time for me to decide on what I will do in life and how I will train myself for it. I want to be an actor, but if I can not be a real good actor (character or dramatic) I do not care to be one. What I make my work I want to do it for the joy I find in it and for the best good I can give from it.”

R32. 8/26/44 “I read my Life Rdg. over but I saw nothing in it that pointed toward pictures or the stage. My brother [781]‘s Life Rdg. points toward pictures or the stage. Did you get us mixed up?…

“I have decided to drop music, because I don’t practice like I should. I found it hard trying to do three things at once: going to school, working [at the theatre], and taking music.”

R33. 4/3/44 EC’s ltr.: “When you get here we will go over your Life Rdg. together. I think there is a great deal in it that you will find very interesting, but if it doesn’t appeal, forget it.”

R34. 6/4/44 “I had my physical examination for the Army on May 10th but I didn’t pass. I am glad that I failed in a way - I will at least be able to finish school. The draft board told Daddy that they would not call me again.

“I am looking forward to being at the A.R.E.] convention and in being with you. I am anxious to discuss with you your work and any plans you might have for me if I stay for the summer.”

R35. 7/9/44 Father [779]‘s ltr.: “I know he [318] must be happy with you and his stay there will be so helpful and an education in itself, and will be of help to him in deciding to do as suggestions in his life readings. We are praying he will. I know of no other work greater than teaching or preaching and the great help to mankind as is needed so much today and in the future years ahead.”

R36. 7/25/44 Father [779]‘s ltr.: “We are so happy that [318] is with you and taking an interest in the work and from what I can get from his letters, he has well made up his mind that that is what he wants, and he seems to be so happy there with you. He says you are wonderful.”

R37. 8/23/44 GD’s ltr. to H. J. Reilly, Ph.T.:

Dr. H. J. Reilly, RCA Bldg., 1250 Sixth Ave. New York City

“Dear Doc:- “A young man, Mr. Cayce’s namesake, [318] (perhaps you’ve heard Mr. Cayce speak of him in his talks on reincarnation), is planning his first visit to New York. He has been spending the summer with us in Virginia Beach, having come from Alabama, and wants to see the “big city,” before he goes back to school on the 11th.

“He plans to get to New York the first of next week and be there about a week. I’m wondering if it would be possible, and not too much trouble, for you to get passes for him to attend some of the radio programs listed on the enclosed sheet. He is especially anxious to get a pass to the NBC symphony Orchestra so he can hear Toscanini.

“Anything you can do along this line for him will be greatly appreciated by us all. he will come to your office when he gets to New York to see what you have been able to get for him.

“With great appreciation for your many past favors, and with kindest personal regards to you and yours from all here, I am”

R39. 8/31/44 Mrs. [3175] [helping young [318] see N.Y.] wrote EC:

“I try to get [318] to talk about you but he is interested in other things. He did say you had an interesting dream about your Egyptian life and saw your associates as they were then and as they are today.” [294-189, Par. R2, R3, and R7 [?]]

R40. 9/16/44 Young [318]‘s ltr. to GD: “Well, here I am home. Wish I was there going to school. I miss you all so much. I had a wonderful time up there and what I learned I cherish. I am looking forward to next June when I can return again to the Beach…

“School started Monday. I am taking Art, Speech, American Problems, Glee Club, English, and Bible.

“Wed. night I started having a reading every night of the Bible with Mother and Daddy. We are on the 10th chapter of Genesis now.”

R41. 2/4/45 His ltr. to Gertrude Cayce: “One month ago [1/3/45] mankind lost a great teacher, healer, and personality. I have lost a friend, a true friend, the like I will never have again in this life. I will always be thankful for having had the opportunity of knowing Mr. Cayce and I shall always remember my summer at Va. Beach. The Ass’n will go on, for that is what he wants. There is so much, so much good in that vault that mankind needs. That good shall be taught to them. They shall receive it, they shall benefit and profit from that good. Will there be a person to take his place, to carry on the readings? Who knows? There might be, there might not be. I keep remembering St. Matthew Chapter 7:7,8. Mr. Cayce said those two verses so many times while I was there.”

R42. 5/20/45 Father [779]‘s ltr. to GD: “I want to thank you for attending to hotel reservations for [318]. We are giving him this trip to the Congress for his graduation gift. He wanted to go.”

R43. 10/27/46 Young [318]‘s ltr. to GD: “The long lost boy is back again. I am attending St. Olaf College here in Northfield, Minn. I certainly do thank June and Harmon Bro for advising me to come here. It is wonderful.” [GD’s note: Miss [1968] had financed his year at college, knowing that it was Edgar Cayce’s wish to help him with his education.]

R44. 12/4/46 He signed an A.R.E. membership application for the first time on his own, requesting the mailings, current publications, and extracted material from the readings on cancer, tuberculosis, arthritis. [GD’s note: A few months later we heard that [318] had been expelled from college due to homosexual tendencies.]

R45. 10/31/47 He ordered A.R.E. publications.

R46. 1/13/48 Lydia J. Schrader Gray wrote from her southern lecture tour for A.R.E: “[318] is a radio announcer there in …, [Ala.]. He looks thinner than ever. Such a dinner! Three kinds of meat, chicken, duck, ham. Three kinds of biscuit. Rice, sweet potatoes and marshmallows, stuffing, peas and celery, olives, pickles. Three kinds of cake; coconut, plain, and fruitcake. Coffee. Whew! I thought of the starving millions in Europe and Asia.”

R47. 8/20/48 Mrs. [264]‘s ltr. to HLC: “Know you were surprised to see [318] today. His plans had been to go to N.Y. Seems, however, that the law just doesn’t work that way. He and I talked about eleven hours on his visits out to see us. What he wants to know (before making any decision regarding his life work) is, if he has a part in the [Edgar Cayce] work, and just WHAT that part is. Am sure you can be of a great help to him.”

R48. 8/30/48 HLC’s to Mrs. [264]: “Thank you very much for your letter of Aug. 20th and for your sending [318] down this way.

I spent a good deal of time with [318] while he was here and went over his Physical and Life Readings with him very carefully. He has never done anything about either one. Years ago, the readings specifically [318-6] recommended an operation - not a very serious one but something that needed to be attended to. He has let this go by with the result that there seems now to be a constant drain on all energy and vitality. I am sure he must be rather anemic and perhaps subject to T.B. I have advised him to go back to his reading and follow it very closely. If he does this, I think there will be good results, both from the physical and the mental standpoints. He is a sensitive, capable person and can go far if he can just get enough energy to get underway.”

R49. 9/16/48 He wrote HLC that he was going to start taking the Atomidine as the readings had told others to take it for purifying the glands.

R50. 9/23/48 HLC asked him to report any results. “Don’t forget outside activities - bridge, dancing, dramatics, social groups in church - anything that will bring you in touch with more people. Make yourself get going on this. What about the operation? Let me know what the the doctor says.”

R51. 9/25/49 See ltr. under 318-9, Par. R14 indicating he was having the hernia operation on Oct. 4th.

R52. 2/1/50 See ltr. under 318-9, Par. R15 reporting success of hernia operation but that he is now in a T.B. sanitarium. [See subsequent Reports, healthwise, under 318-9.]

R53. 8/6-25/51 He was one of the young men participating in HLC’s Project X-1 (as explained in the A.R.E. publication, The Searchlight, [back dated] 7/1/51 under the heading AN EXPERIMENT IN PARAPSYCHOLOGY; also in the booklet OUR JUDGE & JURY by Wm. N. Petersen; also in The Searchlight 9/1/52 entitled ALL THINGS TO YOUR REMEMBRANCE by HLC.

R54. 8/14/51 During the Project while attending Tuesday night A.R.E. Study Group meeting, at the point of meditating on the statement “While in darkness, we may become conscious of the light through the light within [Book II A SEARCH FOR GOD, lesson II, Day and Night],” [318] was inspired to write the following:

Night comes to the sea. Ships ride the waves in uncertainty. In the distance stands a lighthouse offering protection and guidance. The light and power is there - a power unseen. Man only has to turn it on and direct it properly. In so doing light comes to the sea and ships ride the waves with more certainty. They are heading for their port - their goal. Daybreak and the lighthouse is still there - serving as a landmark and guide for mariners. True, a time may come when the light will go out. For the moment the ships are lost in darkness. However, the force, the power is still present. The trouble is somewhere else down the line. The force is ready and waiting. Man must correct the trouble and not let things get in a run down condition.

One may live in darkness - the symbol of evil - but light - the symbol of good - is always within the entity. True, it may be only a small spark yet it can become a shining beacon. This power - the God Force - is within man. He must come to know and understand it and to use it constructively in his every day living. We must become shining examples of this force. Our will must become God’s will, otherwise the light will not be very bright. The less God will, the less light. We will not be giving our best service. Self-will finally results in complete darkness for the individual, but still the light force is present within. Waiting, willing, and ready. A patient and loving force. “In Him there is life, and life shineth out even unto those who sit in darkness.” Turn within. Find the trouble. Get it in the light where it can be seen for what it is. Deal with it. Eliminate it by putting God’s will into action. Flee not from your work, from the correction for:

“Whither shall I go from thy spirit? Or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there: If I make my bed in hell, behold, thou art there. If I take the wings of the morning, And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea; Even there shall thy hand lead me, And thy right hand shall hold me. If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me; Even the night shall be light about me. Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee; But the night shineth as the day: The darkness and the light are both alike to thee.” (Psalm 139:7-12)

R55. 1/5/52 Young man living with [318] while they both worked and took courses in college wrote: “We are both rescheduling ourselves for two hours more sleep per night to see if he will gain weight more rapidly. We are rescheduling our meditations for immediately after work during the week, as that will be a very convenient time. With these measures we hope his body will readjust more quickly so that he will be able to discontinue his pneumo-injections long before the 5 yr. period is complete.”

R56. 6/7/53 Friend’s ltr.: “[318]‘s mother [780] is being buried today.”

R57. 6/13/53 HLC’s ltr.: “I am sure that you are prepared for a change like this, and I am sure too that you realize that at such periods there is frequently a stepping up of energy which enables those of us who are still on a three-dimensional plane to move ahead toward goals which we have set for ourselves. I hope that this change will mean a great quickening of energy for you. I think it may.

“We have thought and prayed about all of you during this difficult time. Best regards.”

R58. 6/54 Routine mailing was ret’d with change of address noted to Williamsburg, Va. We hoped he was planning to settle there and go to William & Mary, one of the colleges recommended in his Life Rdg.

R59. 9/9/56 He wrote from Los Angeles, Calif.: “At Mrs […] there is a Zenith Radio-Phonograph Console and a large number of record albums and records. I collected these records over a period of several years and most of them are classical and semi-classical, although a small number of them are popular ones…I would like to give the collection of records and the console to the A.R.E., if there is any use for it at your present headquarters.”

R60. 9/19/56 HLC’s ltr.: “I read your ltr. to the Executive Committee at its meeting last Wed. They appreciated having the gift of the radio-phonograph. We will have it repaired and I am sure many of the members will enjoy your records.

“It is good to know that you and […] have both gotten located in good jobs and are planning further work in night school this year.”

R61. 7/20/57 Friend’s foster mother’s ltr. ”[…] and [318] have moved to an apt. across the road from Denver University campus Denver, Colo.]. [318] has been doing well, so well that he is on the dean’s list and undoubtedly will get his B.A. at the end of the summer term.”

R62. 5/25/58 [318] wrote from Colo. requesting health information from the readings for his father [779], his sister [4176] and his brother-in-law, asking for prayers for them. “I guess you know Mrs. […] [[…]‘s foster mother] passed away peacefully on May 5th in …, Canada.”

R63. 5/24/60 “After I told [friend […]] about my conversation with you [HLC] last Tuesday night it shook him into realizing that something had to be done about his condition and soon. Early Wed. a.m., May 18th, he saw physician, then he went to a psychiatrist at the Veteran’s Hospital (he was not eligible for admission), and from there he went to the Colorado Psychopathic Hospital, where he entered as a volunteer patient. Yesterday I had a short talk with his doctor, a young Jewish psychiatrist named Harold Shure. Briefly I was told the following: He has needed treatment for a long time. The doctor classifies him as paranoid schizophrenic. He will probably be able to leave the hospital in about three weeks. He is well physically. He is making good progress. […] would like for his name to be placed on the A.R.E. prayer list and he also would like for you to pray for his protection and healing. You may also place my name on the list, if you will, for guidance and continued courage.”

R64. 1/1/61 He wrote from Ala. saying that he had major surgery on 11/16/60 and 11/22/60, most of his stomach being removed because the condition was becoming malignant. He was convalescing now at his sister [4176]‘s home. He hoped to be able to return to Denver to his job as library assistant. He was mainly concerned now with the mental state of his friend […].

“When I left Denver on Nov. 5th […] was in good shape physically and mentally. He was to come to see me in Ala. a few weeks after my operation [This was our original plan]. I was surprised when he came to …, [Ala.] on the afternoon of Nov. 13th when I entered the hospital… Your telephone call [HLC] the day before my first operation gave me some reassurance as to […]‘s condition. By the time of my second operation I was unable to insist that he return to Denver. After I was released from the hospital on Dec. 7th […] stayed with me at [4176]‘s [she told me he was welcome to stay through the holidays]… […] had said many times that he was going to see his father in …, [N.C.] after Christmas and then to see you. Last Fri. he said he didn’t think he would go but would stay on here. I had to tell him what the situation was and that I couldn’t continue to impose on my sister [4176] and her husband. [She and husband and my brother [427] and wife paid my hospital bill in full as a Xmas gift to me - the surgery bills were very high - I had no hospital insurance].

“I am afraid […] misunderstood the situation and was hurt. About 3:30 yesterday morning he thought he was having a heart attack. Later he told me he thought he was dying. This was his first outbreak of anxiety and fear of death since he was released from the hospital last summer… He took the 3:20 bus yesterday to Norfolk. I thought he was going directly to see you. Shortly before noon today he called from …, [N.C.] saying that he was going to visit his folks there for a day or so.

“I didn’t want to see him go but I had no other choice. I miss him so much and I am so worried about him. I would do anything for […]. I want him to be happy in whatever he does and free from fear and anxiety… I want you to do all you can for […]. If you think it advisable and urgent for him to return to Denver to see Dr. Harold Shure, then please see that he goes back without any fear. […] has very little money left [from the inheritance from his foster mother] and I don’t know how he can possibly get back to Denver without some financial help…

“Last year was a bad one for […] and me. Just when things were going so well for us I had to get sick. I am afraid that my illness was largely responsible for […]‘s new trouble. I guess I should have stayed in Denver for my surgery. Perhaps then nothing would have happened to […]. At least he could have seen Dr. Schure [Shure?]. I had no one to turn to or to talk with during […]‘s illness last spring and summer, nor do I now (I did have a few talks with Dr. Schure about […] and me). It has all been very hard for me. I love him so, yet I feel that I have done so little for him. All I want is to see him healed in every way. I had so hoped to see him as a college teacher. I think he would make an excellent teacher of literature… I hope I have been more of a helpmate to […] than a detriment. I want to remain with […] (as I told Dr. Schure) if it is best for him, but if I am more harmful than helpful to him then I would rather break away. […] has always wanted growth from our association. I feel that there has been some growth for both of us - not enough I am sure. I wish I could have a long talk with you. Life is so short and so hard to understand… I wish I had the faith of the person who touched His robe long ago - I wish I had faith enough for […] and me.”

R65. 1/5/61 HLC’s ltr.: “As you surmised, […] is here… You can be sure that we will do everything possible to be of help to him. I imagine that you can get together again in Denver. It is good to know that you are continuing to improve. Our best wishes for your good health and for your activities in the New Year.”

R66. 2/1/61 HLC’s ltr.: “Just a note to express the hope that you are continuing to improve in your recovery from the operation. Take it easy and don’t push yourself too hard.

”[…] is getting along fine here at Headquarters. He is certainly much calmer and quieter than when he first arrived. Each day he is spending some time helping with painting and repair work here on the building (and there is plenty of this, by the way). I see and talk with him most every day.

“We frequently talk about you, and he is wondering just when you will be able to go back to your normal work activities. What would be the chances, [318], of you and […] both getting work in Alabama?”

R67. 2/28/61 “Thank you for your letter of the first of the month.

It is good to know that […] is better. I am grateful to you for your help. My doctor released me last week. I expect to return to Denver and the full-time work as a library assistant around the first of April. It was very kind of the library to grant me such a long leave of absence…

“I haven’t thought about staying and working in Ala. I have a job in Denver and I like living out there.

“Today I have been very depressed for some reason or other; worry over my physical being, the future (if I have much of one), […], etc. I need to have some talks with you… Thanks again for your help and for your prayers.”

R68. 3/6/61 HLC’s ltr.: ”[…] raised the question about working in Ala., wondering if it would not be a good idea so you could be closer to members of your family.”

R69. 5/3/61 Friend […]‘s ltr. from Denver, to Ruth LeNoir:

“This is to request that my name be removed from the A.R.E. prayer list. I am well enough, but I have not been able to find work. Perhaps I have relied too much on prayer and meditation, out of fear and desperation. I’ve placed a number of applications and perhaps something will be forthcoming soon.”

R70. 5/18/61 “I was hired again by the … Public Library after your letter arrived. This was the job I wanted.”

R71. 5/29/61 “Everything seems to be working out splendidly here, and [318] and I have been talked to by the former attorney general of Colo. about opening a bookstore… It seems that [318]‘s health is consistently improving, although he is quite thin, still.”

R72. 9/5/61 HLC phoned GD: “[318] died tonight. I just had a wire from his father.” [His father asked HLC to notify [318]‘s friend […] who was still in Denver.]

R73. 9/14/61 HLC’s ltr. to Mr. [779]: “Thank you for wiring me regarding [318]‘s death. I had known for sometime that he was critically ill, but for the last several weeks had not been in touch with him, or with […]; so I didn’t know that he had returned to Ala.

“What can anyone say to a father who has lost his son? In fact, what indeed can one say to anyone who has lost someone very close to him? Even though we may ourselves feel that we are prepared for this change called death, there is a certain sense of loss and wonderment and concern when the transition takes place for anyone close to us.

“This note is just to say that you can be sure that we are holding both you and [318] and the family in our thought and prayers.”

R74. Following [318]‘s death on 9/5/61, his friend […] went all to pieces. He returned to A.R.E. and Hugh Lynn worked with him for several months, finally arranging for him to get the proper psychiatric care. He spent time in a sanitarium, or mental institution. In 1965 he began to make a “comeback”.

R75. 5/24/67 He reinstated himself as a Sponsoring Member of A.R.E indicating that he was active again as a librarian in [N.C.].

R76. 6/26/68 He renewed his membership, saying: “All is well with me. I do find that trying to buy both home and car, at once, is trying at times. But most of my troubles are temporary, as most troubles are.

”…A.R.E. Group has added two members and we have had all of five people present during the last two sessions.”

R77. 11/17/68 GD’s note: Friend […] phoned to tell me that he has gotten a library job in Va. so he can be nearer A.R.E. He is happy in the work, now owns a home and a car, and recently has been keeping company with a young lady. I am very sure that [318], wherever he is, is very happy that his friend […] has turned out so well. Perhaps [318] has been a guiding influence from the other side?
