Protestant) This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at the home of Mr. David E. Kahn, 20 Woods Lane, Scarsdale, N.Y., this 3rd day of May, 1941, in accordance with request made by the self - Mrs. [1472], Active Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc., Virginia Beach, Va.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno. Mrs. [1472].]
Time of Reading 3:10 to 4:00 P. M. Eastern Daylight Savings Time. N.Y. City.
- GC: You will have before you, here present, the entity [1472], born May 5, 1880, in Bowling Green, Virginia, who seeks detailed information and instruction which will enable her to make her work and her associations more effective and of greater service.
Considering the statement made in the Mental and Spiritual Reading [1472-12] given her at the home of Milton Harrison, April 14th, 1940, that “her activity is a channel, a means, whereby God, the Father, hath insured the carrying forward of His purposes; hath intrusted to her the keeping of the way open that others may be encouraged and shown a way,” you will give her, at this time, a detailed reading as related to this purpose in her activities and associations in all their ramifications, informing and instructing her as to how this purpose can be made applicable to, and practical in her present work and experience. You will then answer all the questions she has submitted, as I ask them.
-
EC: Yes, we have the entity, [1472], …, and the information which has been indicated through this channel; especially that indicated in the reading of April 14th, 1940.
-
As given, individuals who have represented certain ideals, and who have presented to their fellow man in material associations the application of ideals in keeping with Creative Forces, are endowed with abilities not manifested or apparent in the experience of all.
-
Thus we find that such individuals, as indicated in the experience of this entity, are set or given opportunities in places, in positions, for the awakening and arousing - in the minds and in the experiences of others - the needs for manifesting the Christ-Consciousness in the affairs of each individual day by day.
-
Hence, as was foreseen, there are those periods of turmoil and strife indicated in the land at present, - there are those periods of doubts and fears arising in the consciousness of individuals everywhere. Consequently, there is the greater need for each soul - as for this soul - to be witness bearing in mien and manner, in conversation, in the activities day by day with the fellow man; as to keep alive that hope, that trust, that faith which is so needed in the experience of each entity; that others, too, may take hope, under the stress of material disturbances - or under the expressions of fear and doubt that arise in the minds and hearts of many.
-
Thus there are the needs for this entity, in her offices and associations, to take advantage of the opportunities for admonishing peoples - everywhere - as to the needs for the closer adherence to those influences that bring into individuals’ experiences the seed of the fruit of the spirit.
-
Though these may appear to many to be only as oft told tales, if they are applied as specific activities day by day, if they become living hopes, living experiences, they are an expression of that awareness which this entity has so oft through the experiences in the earth kept alive in the hearts and minds of the children of men.
-
It is not that there is to be any great act as to cause the unseen influences of a nature that might easily become static in the experience of individuals, - but stress rather that there is to be the expression of patience, and the persistent admonition that each soul put on the whole armor of the Lord, so that all may in their own field of activity of service be as shining lights that may enable those in the field of darkness, doubt or fear, to take hope again.
-
This is the meaning, the interpretation, - this is the practical manner in which the entity may carry on in its relationships with individuals day by day.
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Considering the recent developments for my work in the lecture field, please inform and instruct me as to its purpose and significance; where it is leading; if I should continue to promote it, and if so how I may expand its scope to express and serve the more? (A) This is not merely a channel, but a channel of great opportunity for the entity to be as an emissary, a teacher, an instructor to those in many walks of life, in many phases of consciousness, in many activities in which those very principles, those very tenets that have been indicated are so much needed.
As is understood by the entity, the harvest indeed is ready, but the laborers are few. By all means USE this opportunity as a manner, as a means to disseminate those impelling intimations, those impelling influences, - which the entity has the ability to do in such a manner as to be most efficacious in the experiences of individuals.
As to where it leads, - this depends much upon the manner in which the entity presents those truths that are subtly expressed; subtle, yet from which there may be positively drawn truths and lessons for the individuals to meet their own problems.
For, the answer must ever be personal, individual; and so given in the expressions by the entity that individuals may in their own lives make a practical application of those tenets, those truths, - that the day of the Lord IS at hand, and that even in the hours or periods when fear is as a ruling force, there may be brought the white light of health, help and happiness into the minds of all.
Thus, - here a little, there a little, line upon line, precept upon precept, the leaven may leaven the whole lump.
This is the purpose, - this is the manner, this is the way that the entity may use these opportunities; as an emissary of the Prince of Peace.
For, that sought by all is peace; not as the world gives peace, but this is an activity that must FIRST find expression and root in the heart and mind of each individual, before there can come peace in relationships to others.
- (Q) Considering my experience and developments; my own talents as well as the needs and opportunities in the radio field, and my service as it relates to same, please inform and instruct me as to whether I should continue my efforts to return to this work, and if so who would be a suitable and successful Manager for me, and what specific type of program should be offered? (A) This as we find is a means or a channel through which greater numbers of individuals are brought to the knowledge of that message as may be committed to those who seek in any or all channels.
Thus, as we find, it is well that the entity continue to endeavor to use this as a channel for expression, and for expressing those ideals that are near and dear to the heart of this entity.
As to means or manners, as to agent or channel, - we find that this should come rather as an outcome of that being accomplished, and of that which has been accomplished. Use the regular channels for the approach to same, but as to the message and the lessons, - these are well established in the consciousness, in the awareness of this entity.
Hence be not overhasty, but - as we find - by the beginning of the next season, if there is the continued effort, these will find definite channels and means for expression.
-
(Q) Do you mean, by the beginning of another season, the fall? (A) The fall is considered the beginning of the season for radio activity. And, if there is the continued effort, we find that it will be crowned with success - in those beginnings.
-
(Q) When, where and what was my association in former incarnations with the entity now known as Emmet Finley; has the recent renewal of my contact with him here and now any constructive purpose, and if so what is it and how can it best be fulfilled? (A) As we find, there were more than one association with the entity. Particularly through that period as Judy, there were associations in which they were a complement one to the other. On the basis of those experiences should this renewal of acquaintance, of friendship, of associations, of companionship, be kept. In that manner we may find a helpful influence for each.
There were also associations in the Palestine period during the return, AND in the early Egyptian we find associations. There are differences indicated from the Egyptian sojourn especially, but - by the choices of each, in their service or activity, they may be complimentary one to the other.
- (Q) Please give me an account of the former incarnations in which I have known the following people; the type of association I had with them; the purpose of our present relationship, and instruct me as to how we may be of the greatest service and help to each other here and now. First, […] my son-in-law. (A) Here we find there was an association during that period when, it might be said, there was not a material sojourn; yet a companionship of unity of purpose through activities of individuals so aided by the efforts as to have been a compassionate effort on the part of each entity in that experience - the German through whom much HAS been and was given at that experience.
Hence in the present we find the high mental reasoning together, rather than any material associations; but in which the materialization, by material activity of each, may be construed from - or an active principle governing the relationships of each as one to another; as to things, as to conditions.
Again, in the Egyptian sojourn there were active influences in a material way or manner from which differences arose, - so that in the present the expression in the MENTAL is preferable to the material.
Thus we find the abilities of each to reason together, without those differences arising as to be of harmful natures one to another.
These, then, are the channels, the means, the manners in which the greater continuity of activity may be brought for helpful forces in the experience of each in the present.
- (Q) […] my sister. (A) As we find, here were associations that might be said to have been rather by the knowledge of each, - though in different spheres of activity; as, during the Palestine sojourn, the entity here was a constructive influence in creating that background for the activity of individuals, the teacher and admonisher, while the entity who is now the sister was in another field of activity but during the same period.
Thus in the present we find what might be called the companionate thought, yet the expression of same far afield one from another. Thus the greater helpfulness comes by what they each stand for, as in the acquaintances and friends.
-
(Q) […] my secretary. [She has been with me many years, except for a recent leave of absence.] (A) Here we find associations both good and bad; that is, differences that arose in the activities when one was as the judge against the other. Yet a congenial characterization of same in the present may bring compatibility, trust and hope, which is the character of influence that proves to be helpful for each.
-
(Q) Myron Frantz. (A) We do not find associations in the material experience, but rather as what might be termed students of a thought or expression that brings about a congeniality in this present material experience.
-
(Q) Why is my love and concern for my grandson, […], so much greater than it is for my granddaughter, […]? [See 1472-6, Par. 26-A.] (A) In those associations with each of these through the Palestine experience, there were those periods in which there was the ability of the one to be self-sufficient, - which brings an indifference; while the seeking for counsel, for help, or for instruction in the other, naturally brings the greater feeling of response. For, it is a universal and a divine law that like begets like. So, in the present experience, while there is loving, - yet in the one it might be truly called loving indifference, while in the other it is love that is truly a creative, growing experience in the activities of each.
-
(Q) How can I be of assistance to my daughter, […], in furthering her development and fulfillment? [See 1472-6, Par. 25-A.] (A) As there are those barriers which present themselves for expressions in some direct personal manner as respecting the mental and spiritual or soul development as expressed in the entity, - there needs be that expression which might be interpreted even in the manner in which the Master gave to some of his close associates or disciples, “If ye believe me not because of me, believe for the very works’ sake.” Then, that apply or make practical in thy activities with thy daughter, - not by the physical sustenance or sustaining, though at times it requires just that, but by thy conversation, thy activity, thy dealings with others, - yea, with all, - in such measures as to be “for the very works’ sake.”
-
(Q) Will I finish my life span here and now with a third husband “who will walk the path with me in soul fulfillment” as stated by Bertine Powers in the Akashic reading she gave me? (A) As we find, this will be rather as a matter of choice by the entity. The opportunity, the possibility of such is indicated in the experience. Yet, as to whether or not this is to be the choice of the entity will depend upon much of the entity’s OWN activity.
-
(Q) Did I have a German incarnation around 1600 A.D. as stated by Bertine Powers and if so did I know Jacob Boehme at that time and how close was my relationship with him? (A) As we find, and as we have stated heretofore - and as just indicated, during that particular experience the entity was not in a material manifestation; yet was active in the thought, the purpose of those expressions found in the admonitions of Boehme. Thus the appealing influence. There was a closeness that was closer than physical associations; but we do not find material or physical manifestation at that period.
-
(Q) Please give me further information regarding my Grecian incarnation at the time of Pythagoras, the developing or retarding associations and influences of that incarnation which bear on my present life, and how they may be best used in my present experience for my highest development and the service of others? [See 1472-12, Par. 39-A.] (A) As we have indicated, through that particular sojourn in the earth there were those expressions, those fulfillments of activities in which there were set rules, formulas, - as indicated by the messages of Pythagoras that the entity applied in the rhythmic use of the body as well as in the application of the sense forces of the body for expression; that is, the ability of expressing self in the forms in which they become the more activative in the lives and the experiences of individuals.
Then, in the present there may be the translating of same into the conditions and experiences that may paint the picture of the activity necessary. Or the entity has the abilities to give expression of the characteristics, or to paint them in such words as may find lodgment in the consciousnesses of others in such measures and ways as to wield a continued influence upon the mien and manner of individuals.
Thus the entity may use such abilities, such associations, in interpreting those tenets and truths of that teacher during that period, that activity of self through same, in ways and means as to be more efficient in every form of its meeting with, as well as its ministration with, activities of individuals in this present experience.
-
(Q) Can I best serve the Forces of Light in present world conditions by continuing in my present position and activities, or should I retire from public life and devote myself to writing? (A) There are greater opportunities in the present position for reaching the greater number, making the greater preparation for a service a little later. Do not change for at least another year, or year and a half to two to three years - as has been indicated.
-
We are through for the present.

Reports & Follow-up
R1. 10/41 She referred Mrs. [2603] and Miss [2618] for Life Readings.
R2. 1/7/42 [1472]‘s letter to EC:
Dear Edgar:
I will now try to supplement my Saturday’s letter to you. After writing such a long letter to my daughter […] that morning I did not have much further time, so I had to just write a brief note to you in inclosing the copy I wanted you to see. Of course I knew then, and know now, I could trust you to treat the matter confidentially.
[…] has two beautiful children, […], aged 11 and […] (my namesake) aged 7. As you saw them the day I had my last reading at the Kahn’s you know something of their physical appearance, but you had no opportunity to estimate their dispositions. Unfortunately […] is terribly jealous of his sister, and never has anything but faultfinding for her. In retaliation she fights back, so that the atmosphere of the home is one of continuous contention.
Unfortunately, […], the father, shows a decided partiality for […]; pets and praises her a lot, while he finds a great deal of fault with […], - all of which only aggravates the jealousy of […] for his sister. It is all too bad, and seems to me so unnecessary as I am convinced […] would be very different if handled differently. He is a very highstrung, sensitive little fellow with a brilliant mind, but a defeatist attitude toward life because he feels defeated in his home relationships.
Well, […] has not answered my letter. I never meddle in her affairs and it was difficult to make even a suggestion, but I feel so keenly for […] in the situation I felt I must try to help. As you say, and as I have known right along, having a Life Reading for him will do no good unless […] will follow the suggestions given, and, since she does not believe in the readings, I doubt if I have accomplished anything except her possible resentment. In any event, I could but try.
You may remember that I have asked several questions in my own readings as to how I can best help, and have always been told I can do little in the situation.
Thank you for returning the copy of my letter to […] so promptly. It came, with your note, yesterday, and greeted me when I got home from the office.
[1743] had lunch with me last week and showed me a lovely letter he had from Mrs. [2174]. He did her natal horoscope and she was greatly pleased with it, for which I was very glad as I was responsible for her having it done, and thus felt some degree of responsibility.
I wrote her after my lunch with [1743] to confirm the date I have on the 20th to do my illustrated lecture for her school, and told her how delighted I am that she found the horoscope interesting and helpful. In her letter to […] she invited him to come out for dinner and a talk with her. If, and when, he goes I am sure they will both get a great deal out of the evening in discussing her horoscope, as he can then embellish points in which she is especially interested. I like Mrs. [2174] so much I hope she will give me the opportunity to see something of her as time goes on. Everyone, - including myself, - is so busy with extra work for defense that none of us have much time for social contacts. I am beginning a Red Cross course in First Aid next Monday, and this will take two evenings a week, and a lot of studying in between, until it is finished. However, I do not look upon contacts such as that with any of us who have been associated in Palestine, or other important incarnations, as merely social, for I feel this group has been brought together by you for definite and specific work in reconstruction after the war. I think we should now be doing something about it, but do not know just how to achieve it. I wrote the [1100]‘s about my experience in buying the house at Virginia Beach, and about what I vision as the work of our particular group, and I would like you to see a couple of letters I had from [1100] about it. I am inclosing them. Read them IN THE ORDER THEY ARE ATTACHED, and when through just destroy them. If you think Hugh Lynn would like seeing them show them to him, but please destroy thereafter, and treat my sending them in confidence.
I am good bit disturbed that Mrs. Elizabeth K.] Milholland has not rented the house I purchased down there, as I shall be unable to swing the indebtedness without the rental I anticipated to enable me to do so. Hugh Lynn wrote me last week he thought he had a tenant for it, but I have heard nothing from him since, so fear this fell through. However, I was so definitely guided to buy the property I feel sure that somehow the way to hold it and finish paying for it will be opened by the same Source which directed me in the first place.
I am glad you are all well, and know both you and Gertrude enjoyed having Edgar Evans home for Christmas. My love to all members of your household, and write me again when you have time.
Devotedly,
P.S. I did not SEE Mrs. [1663] when she was here. She merely PHONED me to tell me about the readings for her grandson and Mrs. [2174]‘s grandson, and mailed me both readings after her telephone conversation. I too think her a fine person. I have never met the Dr. [her husband].
R3. 1/9/42 EC’s letter to [1472]:
Dear [1472]
Had quite a dream about you last night or this morning. Don’t quite know whether it was caused by the reading of your letter of the 7th or those enclosed in same but think it is worth repeating and here it is;-
You were living in your home here at the Beach, (remember I have never been in the house) and I came in to see you, came through a living room to a side room where you were sitting by a large desk working, you seemed to have been writing something, and were reading it over making corrections with a pen, had on glasses with a long black cord on them, there was a metal clasp on same and you as you spoke to me was slipping that clasp up and down, as came through the living room saw three men sitting there, they looked very unusual to me so I asked you who were your friends waiting in the front room - you said is there any one there, I said yes there are three men waiting there - and they look a bit queer to me. So we both came back to the room, each of them arose, one was quite an elderly man with long white beard, he was dressed in a long flowing robe, and spoke first, said Mrs. [1472], you said yes what is it - he answered I am Simeon, I was your Sec, as “Judy” and have brought you my report on the record you gave me to get on the early life of the parents of Jesus, or of Joseph, and Mary the maiden the Mother of Jesus, later the wife of Joseph. He held in his hands which we had not seen before, a large scroll, which he began to unroll. When the second man spoke he said I am Naid, whom you commissioned to get the early life of Jesus in Persia and India and have it here - his was a large flat book which we had noted he had sitting by him on the floor - he was dressed in very funny shoes that turned up at toe and were very pointed, long socks short velvet trousers and full bodice with lots of ruffles and close skull cap which he had not removed - was youngish and very piercing black eyes. He picked up the book and started to present it when the third man spoke, he was all a soldier, rather a deep voice, lots of trapping on his dress, he said I am Teka whom you told to get the happenings at the Cross when Jesus was Crucified, he had a great ball of some sort and began to unroll. You said wait - this is my friend Edgar, they all spoke and said yes, we came with him. I said but you were here when I came in, do not remember seeing any of you before. O said they all - we forgotten you haven’t seen us but we have been with you often. Then I awoke - what would you make of that, never had any thing just like that before.
Yes you have given Mrs. […] [her daughter] an opportunity - there you will have to leave it am thinking.
Am anxious to hear whether Mr. [1743] is considering coming this way - had he been here last week could have given him a case here that would have helped him carry on - a case from N.Y. that wanted to stay here. He is in Fla at present.
Hope you have a very fine evening at the school and a most pleasant visit with Mrs. [2174].
You are taking on lots of work - but so must we all, will the job that needs to be done in a hurry be done - yet can’t be finished off in a hurry.
Think heard H. L. say your house was rented think he did it - as Mrs. Milholland has been with a sister who is very ill, but am sure you have the details before this.
Write me real soon - and tell me what you make of the vision or dream. Funny wasn’t it - but I do have funny dreams or experiences while sleep, but felt had to tell you about this.
Thanks for the letters - [1100] and [470] are such dear people love them as if they were my very own, feel at times as if they were. What comes of her [1100] being my daughter in Egypt.
Thanks for every thing with much love [signed] Edgar Cayce
R4. 1/15/42 [1472]‘s letter to EC:
Dear Edgar:
I was quite fascinated by your account of your dream, and rather think I can trace its source.
The night you were in my apartment here I told you that I have wanted for some years to write a book on the boyhood of Jesus, calling it The Young Nazarene. You will remember our discussion of it and your offer to get as much information for me as may be obtained through the “Readings”. My idea has always been to use what knowledge I have, or can obtain, as a basis and embellish it with my own impressions which are sometimes very keen, and often very beautiful. It is my own belief that these impressions are fleeting memories of my association with Jesus in His childhood, boyhood and young manhood as given me both in my “Life Reading” and in my “Palestine Reading”. I am also of the opinion that they will increase and become clearer when I can lead a less hectic life than the one I now lead in New York, and it would seem to me that the house I have bought down there, and which you visited in your dream, is the ideal place for the cultivation of such memories, and such writing as the book mentioned, and others of similar character perhaps.
Considering the above, - now take the information given me in my “Palestine Reading”. I am told there that the Wise Men of the East who came to offer gold, frankincense and myrrh to the infant Jesus “sought out Judy and her teachings”, and spent much time in their consultations with me.
I therefore believe you transcended time in finding yourself in my house down there, visiting me actually when I shall be there and either finding there, or bringing along with you, helpers for the book I discussed with you here. Simeon, who told you (or me) he was my secretary when I was in Palestine would be the normal one to find the records of the early life of Jesus and His parents.
I think perhaps Naid was the Wise Man from Persia, who consulted me in Palestine (according to my “Reading”) and who would now be able to get for me the records of the study Jesus did in Persia and India. Remember that my “Palestine Reading” says I SENT JESUS TO THESE COUNTRIES TO STUDY. The long pointed shoes would be typical of Persia. Also it will interest you to recall that the Wise Man from Persia who consulted me, and studied my teachings in Palestine (again according to my “Reading” on that period) is now [1908]. I think this is why the present Irishman called [1908] is willing to listen to me and take counsel of me when he listens to no one else, and thinks he knows more than any and everybody else. I do not PLACE TEKA, but he doubtless was also associated with me in that Palestine period, and would help in giving material for the book I have in mind.
I feel the dream came to you because of your interest in all I told you about wanting to write this book, and as an assurance that we will be assisted when the times comes to do it.
R5. Subsequently she obtained three Physical Readings - See 1472-14, -15, and -16.
R6. 8/3/42 She referred young Mr. [2795] for a Life Reading. See 2795-1 indicating that he was [1472]‘s son in the Palestine incarnation.
R7. 8/14/42 [1472]‘s letter to GD:
Gladys dear:
Learning about the shower given you for your new home brought me my first knowledge that you have made the move. Or have you? I am merely ASSUMING it, but hope it HAS BEEN accomplished and that you will be very happy in it. Not knowing just what you most need in thus starting housekeeping I am inclosing a check to be used for some little gift from me, - either for the house, or for you, personally. It was very thoughtful of you, dear Child, to make a copy of [2795]‘s “Life Reading” [see 2795-1] for me. You must have received my thought in the matter, for I kept wishing I had asked it, that I might have a better opportunity to STUDY it, and help him get the most out of it.
And you may believe me that it handed me quite a shock! I anticipated that the boy would have a most unusual “Reading”, but I certainly did NOT anticipate that he would be told HE WAS MY SON in Palestine, or that RA TA’S MANTLE FELL ON HIM IN EGYPT.
As I am leaving to-night for my vacation with my little family who are at Seneca lake, I am very crowded for time to-day. I am not taking my typewriter with me in the hope that being without one will remove any temptation to write long letters when I should be relaxing and resting. In these circumstances I am sure you will not mind my including in this letter to you some things I want to also say to Hugh Lynn and Edgar, and have them also answer. As you will be equally interested I feel I may do this. Especially as it all pertains to the [2795] “Reading”.
First of all I would like the opinion of each of you re. my having HAD a son in my Palestine experience, since neither MY “Life Reading” nor MY full “Reading” on the Palestine incarnation mentioned my having been married or having had a child. This from MY standpoint. In helping [2795] interpret his “Reading” last night (he phoned me and came down from Bridgeport for the purpose) there were questions he asked which I could not answer. After having heard this “Reading” of his you don’t need ME to tell you how IMPORTANT it is that he be straight in his own mind about everything in it. I am therefore asking ALL of you to give certain features of it careful study and help me in the interpretation of points of which I, myself, am no more certain than [2795] is.
Since I mentioned the Palestine incarnation first, I’ll mention first the things that puzzle both [2795] and me in the information about it (brief as it is).
1st: Just what would you all think is MEANT by [2795] having been a “nonentity” at that time? Webster gives two definitions of the word, - one being a thing that is non-existent, or existent only in the imagination, and second, a thing of no account. Since he COULDN’T have been “non-existent”, it MUST mean that he was no account, which does not seem consistent with the statement in the same paragraph that he “gained much” in that experience. IF I was the character represented in my “Readings” for the Palestine period, wouldn’t it seem rather strange that my son would be “paralyzed from physical fear”? Would you think HE was the subject of persecutions, or that he merely witnessed the massacre of the children? There are historians, as well as occultists, who insist there was no massacre of children by Herod, but I do not accept this because THE BIBLE says otherwise. So much for the Palestine data, - at least from [2795]‘s standpoint. FROM MY OWN: it is difficult to understand why no mention whatever should have been made of a marriage, or of my having had a son during my Palestine incarnation, either in my “Life Reading”, or that on Palestine alone. I’d like to know what you all think about this?
2nd: As Edgar is such a fine bible student, maybe he can figure out the identity of the King in [2795]‘s Persian and Chaldean experience. [Handwritten marginalia: Cyrus it was.] […] believes it was SOLOMON. Now wouldn’t that be “sumpin’”? He has a partial memory of this incarnation, as well as the Atlantean one in which he built planes etc. (2795-1, Par. 25). He has also had some tremendously interesting dreams about research work on the King Solomon period. As the “Reading” says “the activity of the entity is recorded not only in Holy Writ but in the history of that particular period” it is tantalizing that [2795] was not given THE NAME of the King he then was. Otherwise he cannot investigate the references at all. HE THINKS he was SOLOMON, and it seems to me (from what the “Reading” does say) it may be true, but we would greatly like to be certain if possible. I believe Edgar can check the “Reading” with biblical history on the Solomon period, and perhaps get some light on the identity of [2795], as the King in this Persian and Chaldean incarnation.
3rd: As Ra Ta’s mantle fell on [2795] in his Egyptian incarnation may this young man be, perhaps, the one who is to carry on Edgar Cayce’s work here, both before and after Edgar passes on to the next room of Experience? There is no question of [2795]‘s psychic faculty, and none, I believe, of a great fund of knowledge which he BROUGHT WITH HIM into the present life. When going over his “Life Reading” last night and I came to his Egyptian incarnation and was told that he took over Ra Ta’s work as a spiritual leader when Ra Ta died at that time, it came to me like an electric flash that here perhaps is the boy I understand Edgar has been told lives in New York, and who is to again take over his work when he (Edgar) finishes this present life. I am sure this will excite ALL of you as much as the idea does me. I may be quite wrong, of course. [2795] will have a long way to go before he has Edgar’s spiritual stature, but then he is only twenty-eight, and has a wide-open mind, and a constructive purpose in all things. I will be most appreciative if both Hugh Lynn and Edgar will write me what they think of all this, as each of them has given it thought I am sure. I’d also like knowing what YOU think of it.
4th: Of course the first mentioned Atlantean incarnation checks perfectly with [2795]‘s present work. This is the incarnation he partially remembers. Before he got the “Reading” he knew he destroyed the Atlantean city of Poseidia. Or rather the forces he controlled got out of hand and did so. He has done a tremendous amount of research work on Atlantis, and the city of Poseidia is a historical fact, if we can believe in all the literature regarding Atlantis. In the incarnation under discussion is it your consensus of opinion that the reference to the “sons of Belial” means the forces of darkness, or would you take “Belial” to be an actual person? MY interpretation is that it is used as a symbol of what we call the Devil, - or forces of darkness.
5th: Both [2795] and I would like Hugh Lynn to study the answer to the question about Edith Ellis and give us his interpretation of it. From the answer neither of us is sure whether or not it is wise for him to continue to work with her Society for Ethical Research in their effort to develop an instrument for inter-planetary communication. Neither do we understand how this association and work could “tempt thine own self to thine own undoing,” (meaning [2795], of course) when he is TOLD to continue the study through this channel. Or so we interpret the instruction.
From his “Reading” all of you will already know you are dealing with a channel for the release of great power into the world. As I seem to have been the one called to guide him on his way, and keep his feet in the straight path, I WILL BE GRATEFUL FOR ALL THE HELP ALL OF YOU CAN GIVE ME.
From a PERSONAL standpoint I am not drawn very strongly to [2795], I mean EMOTIONALLY. This is another curious thing to me if he was my son in Palestine. He is extremely difficult to handle because his very superior knowledge, and understanding, makes him self-opinionated and quite obstinate. At the same time he is extremely universal in his concepts and his attitude toward life. But, - doggone the boy! - he does make the most arbitrary statements at times, and when asked an explanation shuts up like a clam. Which is indicative of his youth, of course. He will learn greater wisdom as he matures, but, - believe you me, - he has no knowledge of the meaning of the word HUMILITY. NONE of this comment is CRITICAL, dear Gladys. I am just trying to give all of you A LITTLE UNDERSTANDING of my problem in helping him, because I need the help of all of you in it. I can’t get away from the inner feeling that I have been GIVEN THE JOB and that I must not shirk it, - as much as I’d like to at times when [2795] becomes so difficult.
This is a long letter, and I must now stop it.
Address me UNTIL THE 26TH: C% Mrs. […], …, Seneca County, New York. R.D. #1.
Do not send any mail there after the 26th as I will be leaving to return to New York on the 29th.
My love to you, and to all the Cayces.
Devotedly your friend [1472]
R8. 8/24/42 HLC’s letter to [1472]:
Virginia Beach, Va.
Dear [1472]-
First a little bit about your house.
Since the first of August it has rained daily and grass, trees and flowers are rejuvenated in Virginia Beach. Mrs. M. and I went out this morning to look over the place, checking on the painting, the roof, etc. The roof is a heavy composition shingle and doesn’t not seem to have been painted, in fact I don’t know whether you paint such roof shingles or not. Mrs. M. is to find out and check with you. I am sure the painter did not include the roof.
The yard and grounds looked much better than when you saw it. The hedge was neatly clipped, the lawn mowed and apparently work has been done on the flower beds. I still think you had a nice idea in buying it, and in so many ways it is what you wanted. Evidently other people think so too. A real estate agent, Mr. Lyle, phoned me Saturday about the house. He had someone to whom he wished to show it. I called Mrs. O’Neill and arranged for this. Lyle said he couldn’t go over
9,200, and of course as yet is not a bonafide offer. I told him that if the people liked the house to have them make an offer on it. If an offer is made they would go to9,500 at least. I’ll keep you advised of developments. There will probably be nibbles before any real bites.Gladys showed me your letter containing questions about [2795]‘s reading. I have just finished going over this. Evidently, putting it mildly, he is a most unusual person. Good old Atlantis.
The answer to the [Edith] Ellis question is consistent with all the advice given in Life Readings. My angle on it would be this. It helps sometimes to remember that everything in a reading works backwards. Begin at the end of the answer and work back. Through the work with Ellis, [2795] may secure knowledge - yes - but first he needs understanding (spiritual), then knowledge gained through the Ellis group as well as from intuitive forces (within himself of course) may be given more abundantly. In seeking through any channel (whether self or others) an individual attracts that which he is ready for - thus [2795], unless he seeks understanding, first may draw through the Ellis group information which may prove of no practical value. As you well know fantastic is hardly the word for some information poured out in many such spiritualist groups. Yes, continue with Ellis, but seek first a grounding of the spiritual laws that govern the relations existing between God and man and man and fellowmen. They are so simple that people try to make them complex - you know them through His teachings.
As your son in Palestine, my guess would be an unborn son affected by the persecutions, and I can think of a half dozen good reasons why it wasn’t given in your reading. All of them involve some discussion of ideas that would take up several fat letters. I’ll hold them but not forget.
Dad and Gladys will be able to give you details on your other questions. My guess, without exhaustive study, would be Cyrus, The Great Persian King who released the Jews for the specific purpose of returning to rebuild the Temple. The original plans of Solomon’s temple were probably discussed with Cyrus at this time (538 B.C. about).
The young man we look for in connection with Dad’s work has been given a name and an incarnation which would identify him [See 137-123, Par. 17-A—20-A]. [2795] seems to be tied in pretty closely, but it would seem more with the practical release of the masses (development of power) rather than with the spiritual message. This too is without careful study.
The Egyptian incarnation is most interesting and I look forward to meeting the gentleman.
The Atlantean incarnations are always exciting. We have many readings on Atlantis and its marvels that he should study - when he is ready for them. You need to prepare him to understand and use them. Some of these readings I speak of, I have never spoken of before to you, details of the massive crystals used to generate power. It is so easy to confuse the Atlantean urges and history for the time element is so long with many incarnational urges.
Dad has been away for a week. Reason you have not heard from him. We expect him tomorrow.
Sally is fine. We both grow anxious (delightfully so) [expecting their first baby] day by day.
Love from all, - h. l.
R9. 9/5/42 EC’s letter to [1472]:
Dearest [1472]
Had intended writing you a thank you note for sending the [Raymond McDermott horoscope] reading of [470]. Didn’t know I was supposed to write you about [2795] reading, thought H. L. had cleared all that up for you. but very glad to have a line from you. Am sorry to hear you didn’t get a rest on your vacation, guess you and I should have just sneaked off some where where we could have confabbed together and gotten some rest, but seems the hurried trip I took really did me good, have really felt much better since came back tho certainly was on the go every moment of the time was away - but sat on the train most of the time and that possibly gave me a rest, just meeting a crowd and talking with whom I choose and letting that pass when didn’t care to talk - well had really some very unusual experiences maybe that helped also then the little visit with my folks in Tenn and Ky that helped also so for me my trip helped - was in Texas on a little matter of business - just to make peace with some folks, seemed to help so that is that.
[470]‘s [horoscope] reading is quite interesting in many ways to me - just wonder if he had heard the reading of [470] that we gave - if not then it is all the more amazing they should be so much alike - yes he seems averse to psychics - and possibly to me in particular - but have heard some where “he that don’t make enemies, isn’t worth his salt” or something similar - however have no hard feelings toward him, wish I knew as much as he seems to know, but if did possibly wouldn’t have as many friends as think I have.
My thoughts, [1472], on Mr. [2795] reading [see 2795-1] possibly doesn’t fit - but it is like this - as regards the Palestine experience - as a comparison of your self he was a nonentity - his fear was not of Jesus - but the attitude Judaism took to his teaching - not being sure in himself. Possibly that doesn’t fit the wording of the reading - but is the sense I get out of reading same. And from that experience - today, he is fearful of missing something - so is holding on to many ideas, with possibly not fully decided in any. Do you get what I mean?
And Yes, think he was either Cyrus of one of the Kings after Old Neb. who made it possible for the ones of every land to return to the worship of their own God in their own land.
3rd - Why not carry on the work here - should he from his association find something here as answers to that higher self, then why should he not be the one - as just what his reaction will be or has been to what he has seen or experienced thus far - he himself can possibly better answer that than any one else. Feel sure who ever carries on if any one, it must be from an honest conviction from within. From whence they will come have no idea but if it is God’s work it will be carried on, if it isn’t - then it has no place in the affairs of man.
3rd Think it is interesting that the Atlantean checks with his own feeling in the matter - so possible will find some link to cause him to check further within his own self - for the Divine Law - must ever take its course - It Must Answer to something within - for the Law is - My Spirit Beareth witness With Thy Spirit -
5 - Am not asked to answer here - but fool like here I go and is only an opinion - to me is my own activity - Study if so desired yes - ever with the thought - not to be possessed by an entity - that may speak through some such channels. Or is that just a crazy idea of mine - all of us are crazy on some subject to be sure, or are to others at least.
Well - some where some how he must learn HUMILITY - also tho he may have knowledge, not to use same for self indulgence
- or as Jesus used His Power. Do not know that it has ever given who was H.L. wife in Egypt - was of the opinion however
- Mrs. Strickland [see 2795-1, Par. 46-A] was at another period altogether. H.L. can give you the data so far on that. Haven’t it here just now.
Glad to hear Dr. [2067] seems better coordinating - she is fine but gets very much disturbed at personalities at times, and the moment is the only thing as can be seen, or seems so to me. Possibly I misjudge if that be judgement.
Gave you my opinion of the reading from Mr. McDermott - wish had his knowledge, but might use it just as selfishly - possibly is best that am just a know nothing. This I do know
- Of my self can do nothing - only as HIS spirit may work in and through me - some to be sure then say all I do is of the DEVIL - maybe so - it is just as true - “BY THEIR FRUITS YE SHALL KNOW THEM” Hope I may never hinder any of you from gaining the best there is and if Mr. Mc- has it more power to him - I only hope to know Jesus the Christ and Him Crucified
- and to make HIM known is my hope and purpose if I know any thing at all.
Keeping fearfully busy - haven’t as many orders for the special edition as hoped to have - have you any suggestions. Am sure notice was sent at bad time for many - but closes now in ten days and will have to hurry.
Gertrude is in Ky for a week or so - H.L. and Sally are here all pretty fair.
Thanks for every thing
With love [signed] Edgar Cayce
R10. 11/19/42 [1472]‘s letter to HLC:
Dear Hugh Lynn:
Thanks for your nice letter. It surely would be a happier world if everybody was sufficiently thoughtful to express approval of others. It certainly warmed the cockles of my heart to have you write me that I am a “nice person”. Of course I should not get TOO COCKY over it, knowing you are probably seeing everything out of rose-colored specks at the moment! But I’ll just forget that and believe what you wrote, - because I WANT TO BELIEVE IT.
I am delighted that Sally liked the little bed-jacket. It should add a bit of comfort to these cool mornings and evenings. Or so I thought in sending it.
I am inclosing a correspondence I have recently had with Flower Newhouse regarding Edgar’s work. About a year ago she wrote me a letter saying the “Readings” we bad for people because they make those getting them think too much of themselves, giving them a false sense of values. I paid very little attention to it at the time, but after thinking it over some months, and realizing that Flower had seen both my “Life” and Palestine “Readings” I came to the conclusion her comment was aimed especially at me. Wanting to be sure just what WAS IN HER MIND I wrote and asked if she felt my “Readings” had inflated my ego, and made me think myself of greater importance than I am. I do not have a copy of this first letter containing this question, but am sending her reply to it (date Sep. 9th) and my reply to that, and a subsequent letter received last week. If you will read the correspondence in chronological order it will explain itself. Please return it when through with it.
If you think it will BE OF ANY VALUE to show it to Edgar, do so. But if it will only disturb him, do not. I leave this to your judgement of a possible value to him in knowing about it. But IF you DO show it to him let him see this letter also that he may know how it all began.
R11. 10/22/42 HLC’s letter to [1472]:
Dear [1472]-
Thank you for your letter of October 19.
I appreciate your sending me the correspondence with Flower Newhouse. I think your explanation of the Life Readings and the points you make are excellent. Her criticism of Life Readings is a natural one and arises from lack of thorough knowledge of the Life Readings. To someone like yourself who has read and talked for years about knowing too much of reincarnation, such comments as she makes are understandable. The basic concepts presented by the Life Readings are in direct opposition to this point of view and you have pointed this out most admirably.
This correspondence makes me more conscious of the fact that we do need clearer and more thorough explanations of the Life Readings and more carefully worked out suggestions for their best use by individuals who receive them.
Tom Sugrue is walking on crutches and is coming North from Florida to be in Washington for a few weeks shortly after November 1. I am going up there to discuss the trade edition of the book with him and will probably come on to New York from Washington. My trip will depend somewhat on his arrival in Washington and I will write you more details just as soon as I am able to make definite plans.
I am very sorry to learn of the trouble with your throat [See 1472-16 Reports]. I hope this has cleared up by now. Sally and the baby are both getting along just fine. Sally is slowly regaining her strength and the baby is eating and sleeping beautifully.
I am returning the correspondence without showing it to Dad. I hate not having him see just what you think about the readings but I think he knows this already and the other would perhaps only disturb him.
With love, Hugh Lynn Cayce [/rt]
R12. 11/14/42 She referred Mr. [2850] for a Life Reading.
R13. 12/15/42 She referred Mrs. [2880] for a Life Reading.
R14. 12/30/42 Mrs. [1472]’ letter:
Dear Edgar:
I spent last evening helping [2880] [see 2880-1] work out the questions for her “Life Reading” on the 12th. As she does not have a bank account separate from that of her husband she gave me the $20: for her “Reading” asking that I send you my check for same. You will find both her questions and the check inclosed herein. Also a little note of her own which she asked that I also inclose.
Mrs. [2880]‘s questions will indicate to you her interests and state of development. Her family is a remarkable one.
Her husband is a composer and musician who plays in […]‘s Orchestra. Her eighteen year old son, [2850], is also a highly artistic lad with such psychic abilities as need to be carefully guarded. Mrs. [2880] herself went through an entire year of such control by discarnate entities as to have been seriously affected in the matter of her health. She feels she NOW KNOWS ENOUGH to protect herself from negative forces. Hence her questions regarding the cultivation of her psychic powers. I think she would STILL do well to keep them shut off. However, we will see what the “Information” has to say about it. You will note her questions about me. She has a CONTINUOUS vision of me standing on a stone rampart in some Eastern land. She feels that I was a person of great importance and that she was perhaps my slave, or servitor of some sort, as my head is covered in the vision and hers is not. She says, however, she has the sense of a loving understanding between us. She always sees me standing gazing out over what seems to be desert land, while she is always walking toward me to join me in my vigil. She has asked an interpretation of the vision, as it interests us both very much, - especially as IT KEEPS RECURRING. Mrs. [2880] is a highly evolved soul, I am sure, and has the most profound knowledge and most spiritual interpretation of astrology of anyone I know. Her husband’s hours of playing in his orchestra are so erratic that her home life cannot seem to be sufficiently organized to enable her to give the proper time to her astrological work, and this disturbs her very much, as she is completely absorbed in the subject and feels she should be teaching it to others, and helping others utilize the knowledge.
Well, this is enough about the [2880]‘s. I loaned [2880] my copy of “There Is A River” last night as she is so eager to read it before you come up for the meeting on the 20th, and could not afford $5. for a copy of the special edition. I had just about finished it, so let her borrow it, as I know she will take good care of it and return it, - which is something people seldom do with books.
Yes: I can now give you a more intelligent opinion of the book. I think Sugrue has done a superb job in his character delineation; in his record of the “Physical Readings,” and in the section on the philosophy which has come through the “Information”. I wish he had given a little more of the value of the “life Readings” to the individual, but, since they were a later development in your life and work, it is quite logical that he stressed the “Physical Readings”. In any event this is of small importance, as the book, - in its entirety, - is such a fine job of writing as to hold the attention of the reader from cover to cover. I believe it will have a substantial sale to start with, and that it is the sort of thing that will grow in circulation with time. Tom has certainly permeated his “Story of Edgar Cayce” with understanding and sympathy, and everyone will feel this I am sure.
Your letter came to me this morning, and I am glad to know you had a satisfactory Christmas, altho I regret to hear that Gertrude has a cold. Yes, I know that I am not alone in having difficulty in getting domestic help. The difference between me and most other women is that I HAVE TO CARRY A BIG JOB AS WELL AS DO MY HOUSEWORK. Were I free of the necessity to earn a living in a responsible position I would think nothing of having to scrub and wash and cook and clean silver at home. But it does necessitate my counting every minute of time in order TO DO BOTH. And means that I have none at all for rest and relaxation, which my doctor says is very detrimental to my health. Well, I guess I’ll live through it!
I am looking forward with great happiness to seeing you in about three weeks. Please be sure to save a dinner or luncheon WITH ME ALONE, as I shall want an opportunity to have at least one nice long talk with you.
My love to you and yours, and may the New Year increase the inner peace of your own mind and soul and body, as well as that of your household.
Yours in ever abiding friendship
R15. 1/29/43 [1472]‘s letter to EC:
New York
Dear Edgar:
I am sorry you found your household so upset when you got home. I thought it might cheer Gladys a bit to hear from me directly, so I wrote her this morning, and I sincerely hope she has fully recovered.
Naturally Gertrude feels a tug at her heart-strings when informed of the forthcoming arrival of another grandchild in such circumstances as exist with Edgar Evans, but the way things are now going with the war I have the conviction that the European end of it (Germany and Italy) will be over before Edgar Evans has to be sent abroad. Of course the Japs are lice of another color, and I think it is going to take us longer to lick them, but with Hitler squelched, concentration on the little yellow devils should finish them off before too long. Anyway we can live but one day at a time, and it will help if we can just not cross our bridges before we come to them.
I share your pleasure in having had the opportunity of a bit of companionship with you, which your visit here afforded. I never felt so completely in harmony with you as this time I was with you, and I believe the meetings will be fruitful. I was happy to contribute whatever I could to them, as I am always glad to do for you or anything that concerns you.
I have had quite a time with Rabbi [991]. He has paid several visits to my office. The last one was to discuss his “Life Reading”. I took him up to … where we could find a quiet corner, and went into it very thoroughly. I told him it plainly indicates a struggle in this incarnation to hew to the spiritual line (despite the fact that he is a Rabbi!). He broke down and told me he is terribly confused and admitted he is unfaithful to his wife and that his mistress is now seven months pregnant. No wonder his “Reading” warned him against “returning to the flesh-pots of Egypt”! I told him I can do nothing for him in such a situation, and that I do not think he will be free of confusion as long as he lives thus dishonestly. He took my frankness very well, but he wants to “eat his cake and have it too”, and that just can’t be done. Of course all this is between us. He begged me to let him come often to talk with me, but I told him only if I can really help him, as there would be no use in talking with me when HE KNOWS THE RIGHT as well as I do.
And to-morrow I am to go over the “Life Reading” of [1897] with her. Remember her? Both of these people have come to me as a result of my talks at the meetings, and I have promised to also see several others. I am glad if I can be of service to any of them but no one can do more for another than incline them to their own inner realization. I said this, you may remember, at the … meeting. The rest is up to them.
I have had some amazing letters from young [2850], who is stationed at Atlantic City. He is only eighteen, and has had such a sheltered life; has been and IS so adored by both his parents, and is himself such a highly sensitized person that his induction into the army gave him quite a problem the first two weeks. He is so opposed to war that it makes him doubly sensitive to military training. I want to quote you something lovely from his last letter, - something that I know will greatly please you too. Here it is:
“My biggest spiritual problem is to be ‘in it but not part of it’. Therefore when I march or drill, or put on my hideous gas mask, I visualize the most beautiful things possible, such as Mr. Cayce’s face, or the pages of the bible, and I say the Lord’s prayer while marching on the boardwalk in the dark mornings.”
He knows your face only from the photograph in “There Is A River”, my copy of which I loaned his mother. He is a beautiful child and deeply religious in the truest sense of that word. I know of no one, - young or old, - who has such implicit faith in prayer. [2850] says God always hears him and always answers him, and he has had some remarkable experiences through prayer which certainly would seem to prove him right.
I am wondering if anything has come to you re. the conflict that goes on inside of me regarding my house down there. When I rationalize it my mind says it is too much for me to undertake and that I should sell it. When I do not LET THE INTELLECT argue with me about it, there is a glad sense of rightness in having bought it. Yet, I cannot help but wonder WHY I AM NOT AT PEACE ABOUT IT IF I WAS TRULY GUIDED IN THE PURCHASE. If you get any intuitive answer, or other slant on it, do let me know, for it bothers me a good deal.
[1743] came in for lunch with me today. It is the first time I have seen him since he was inducted into the Army. He has now been made a corporal, and leaves to-morrow for at least three months at the Tennessee University Medical School [This is in Memphis, Tenn. (University of Tennessee)], where he is to have a further course in X-Ray work. He was in the Medical Detachment of the Army at Fort Monmouth in New Jersey, and there he was also studying X-Ray. He would like to practice Chiropractic, but thus far has had no chance at it. He is grateful for the X-Ray work however, and feels it must have a purpose in his life or he would not have been thrust into this branch. He looks fine, and is eager for each new experience, all of which are broadening to him, and he will never have to go into the actual fighting unless it is in the medical division, as he is totally deaf (from birth) in one ear.
Well, I have written you a long letter. Have heard nothing from Hugh Lynn since his return, but assume all is well with him, since you did not mention him. I am happy that Sally and the baby are in such fine fettle, and I hope Hugh Lynn was satisfied with the meetings and all that attended them here.
My love to Gertrude and tell her to KEEP THE CHIN UP.
Yours in devoted friendship [1472]
R16. 2/2/43 EC’s letter to [1472]:
Dear [1472]-
Thanks for yours of the 29th, Miss Gladys is still pretty sick as are several of the children in her household, so everything is being held up as can’t get hold of a steno who can write the information as might be given, seems to upset quite a number as can easily see how it would who wish emergency readings, but all including myself will have to be just a little patient. Glad you wrote her think it will help a lot.
Yes - quite a surprise to us all about Edgar Evans, but as wrote them - was sure they had thought it all out - and thought both of them very brave considering everything, but is the natural instinct of those very deeply in love, and the world needs more expression of LOVE.
Certainly was nice to see and be with you again, enjoyed the lunch with you and the opportunity to talk with you a bit. Rabbi [991] is a mystery to me, just hope he doesn’t become too much of a pest for you, it is one thing to help a body help themselves and another when one takes advantage of such.
Yes - think you will find Miss [1897] a very interesting person, while have never known her very well except by letter
- tho have met her - she seems to be a very high minded person and does a lot of good.
Hope you haven’t let your self in for too much bother by giving yourself to helping others with the information, will come to know the lives of several that way - but some become leaches in such, others may be props, but hope it will all prove not only a labor of love but a helpful thing for all concerned.
Liked Mrs. [2880], wish might have had the opportunity of meeting [2850], from his reading he must be a very unusual boy, but just hope he doesn’t have too many Jars meeting the army life and the personalities of so many selfish and unselfish persons. A very nice compliment to me hope may never shatter the idea he has of me, tho realize it is something to live up to such an ideal, just as have found it in keeping the idea our own boys have of me, to still be, the hero for your own sons after they have grown to manhood, not an easy task, and would be a task indeed were it taken as a task, has to be a living thing and never a pose or task at all.
No - have had the situation very much on my mind about your property here since saw you, but not one thing that could say was against it has come, again have had something of the same experience of seeing you working there, am sure it is something that you will have to conclude your self, for your first experience as well as all I have ever had would indicate it will be a marvelous place for you to do some of your best work, am sure it has many drawbacks yet has much to endear its self to you.
Glad to hear Mr. [1743] is having an opportunity to better prepare himself for his work, know just a bit about X-ray and suppose what little I know of the Anatomy of the body is my experience with such for several years, and so it will be with him, does he apply himself to such will be of untold help to him in his work later, whether he gets to practice Chiro, just now or not - what he has gotten in the practice and study will only be verified by his work with the X-ray.
Thanks for your letter, H.L. has been busy but am sure you have heard before this, the baby was over Sunday, wish you could see him he is just darling.
Thanks again [1472] for every thing
with love [signed] Edgar Cayce
R17. 3/22/43 See 2880-2, Par. 20-A regarding past associations with [1472] in Palestine, and present urges.
R18. 4/12/43 EC’s letter to [1472]:
Dear [1472]-
Have yours of the 10th [asking if she could come board with EC-GC for a rest-vacation] - yes had heard H.L. say you had been very sick, but have been so busy have only had chance to offer a silent prayer for you. Am glad you are at least able to be home again.
H. L. is in the Army, poor child he was so rushed here at the last moment but think heard him dictating a letter to you, but I can’t afford a typist even if could don’t know as want them to scrawl the poor letter I can make. sure hated to have H. L. leave, and puts me in a bit of a quandary as to what to do, but will do what can - and what can’t just can’t do.
[1472], do wish it were so we could have you here, especially need your council at this time I suspect any way, but Gertrude hasn’t a room in the house that is available, she has been letting rooms to the service men’s wives and they are all full, and you can’t get them out unless you close house - then too she hasn’t a bit of help, and has about worried herself to a shadow, am really uneasy about her, am sorry to have to say that it just isn’t practical at this time wish it were but that is the situation, whether you could find a home here where you might have meals am afraid that too is out of the question, but would like to have you at the Beach.
Sorry you have been feeling so badly, do hope tho now you are on the road to good health and will find just the place for a good rest with the surroundings conducive to a pleasant stay.
H. L. as I said was so busy here after he was inducted resigning from this and that job, and meetings that until the last moment he was off with some one he had a business conference with.
Gertrudes folks are all sick at home also that worries her, never knows what moment she may have to go home, one of the incurable conditions that happens here and there.
Thanks a lot. Do let us hear from you. Just sorry it is as is.
Much love [signed] Edgar Cayce

Thank you very much for yours of the fifteenth. I thought about you many times since you have been in New Hampshire, and I am glad that you have gotten along as nicely as you have. I am sure you have been of a great deal of help to Dr. [2067]. If the sacrifice has not been too great on you part, it is possibly very much worthwhile. It is quite nice of you to suggest such a dedication of the book, but I am sure that I much preferred it had not been done. Too many nice things are being said about me. Too many people are becoming too dependent on me. I do not know as I am able to take it. I feel and have felt for a long time that your analysis of her disposition is just about right. While we never want to pass judgement on others, yet, we are forced at times to feel things even though we may never give verbal expression to them. We all have our faults, I know, and there is none of us so blind as those who will not see even when it is pointed out to us. But why some people can’t take a hint at times when things are continuously going wrong, and know that they must make a change within themselves, again I guess the whole Book is right, “Let him who hath ears, hear.”
I am sorry the weather has been such as to be inclined to aggravate rather than help the general conditions. Possibly, however, being outside or in the different atmospheric pressure, your body will have gained something in its attempt to meet the general conditions and will be better for having had the experience as well as your mental self will have grown some also in working against such odds.
It sounds like a pretty good proposition from the magazine editor. What do you think? Well, I might have thought work was piled up a few weeks ago, but it is gradually on the increase. I think what has helped me most is to have a good stenographer for I can pile all the hard things on to her - she has a pretty good disposition. I am getting along very well. I had taken a couple of days off and got by myself, and I think I crawled up close to the mountain top. If someone does not kick me off, I will be all right.
Hugh Lynn will in all probability, be sent out in the next two weeks - where, no telling. We are expecting Sally and the baby home tomorrow. They have been in North Carolina for three weeks. Gertrude talked to her yesterday and say they are getting along fine. The other grandson is growing right along and it makes us begin to feel a little bit ancient, having two grandchildren.
Thanks for referring the book to others and I hope that it will prove to be of a helpful influence to many as it seems to be doing from the reports that we are hearing now and then.
We have had to get help for Miss Gladys also.
Thanks a lot, With loads of love, Edgar
R20. 10/3/43 [1472]‘s letter to EC:
Sunday,
Dear Edgar:
I was telling [2880] last week of a very curious dream I recently had, and she suggested that I write YOU about it in the hope that your psychic abilities might enable you to interpret it, as it interests us as much as it puzzles us.
I say “dream” but it was not really a dream for I am sure I WAS NOT ASLEEP. I have the feeling I went out of the body while still awake. Anyway I am sure I was not asleep during the experience. I was, however, in bed, and on the path to sleep, altho still in my own state of daily wakeful consciousness. I seemed to get up from the bed, and I stood in a flowing robe that was a dull PUTTY GREY. It even covered my head so that I was grey from tip to toe. I went out over undulating country that had not a vestige of life. Everything was the same dull putty shade of grey. There was no color anywhere; no life anywhere; just miles upon miles of UNDULATING GREY MOUNDS, one merging into the other. I was entirely alone. I saw no living thing, - human, animal, or vegetable, and I felt the most utter sense of desolation. I thought: well, I guess I am what they call being “dead”, and wondered what I should do to contact friends. Then I thought of the instructions in Edith Ellis’ book (“Open the Door”) to call out to those who had gone before and let them know of one’s arrival. So I started calling Laura Elliot, one of my dearest friends who died three years ago. But no one came, and I just walked on in that leaden grey undulating landscape; in my leaden grey robes; in the most awful sense of desolation, - as though I were the only living thing there was in existence, and I but hardly living. Then suddenly the vision passed, and I was back in my own body; my own conscious self.
I have been unable to get it out of my consciousness ever since, so I told […] about it, and she is as puzzled over it as I am. I have thought perhaps it might be due to my physical condition which continues so “low”. Or perhaps to the state of the world at present. Or what have you? Think it over between now and the time you come up here, and maybe we can get at some solution of it, for I do not feel it was without some meaning. As it does not represent my normal state of consciousness, I would certainly like to get at the right interpretation of it.
Am looking forward to your visit and can hardly wait until the 9th of Nov.
Heaps of love from [1472]
R21. 10/7/43 EC’s letter to [1472]:
Mrs. [1472], New York City, N.Y.
Dear [1472]
Thanks for yours of the third. It is quite interesting, but still a morbid sort of a dream. I wouldn’t know just what this could mean unless it was something of a warning to you to be closer in touch with something or someone, if and when such an experience came about. I am sure that the description will be a very beautiful one for you in some story and evidently you have had something in mind that such a desolation either from the luck of friends or caused by so much hate, so much jealousy that must be in the world today and that would be a wonderful description and having experienced it, you could put it into words as nobody else can. I think I know just what you mean for I have had a few times that same loneliness, except under quite different colors. In that outer darkness, it is a purple dark, but I am glad I have never seen that gray. The only gray I have seen in that associated with a few meetings I have in my dreams attended, but that was connected with something that was to be very enlightening and even interpreting it from color.
I am sure it has a meaning, but just what, I do not know. Thank you for thinking of me and writing me about it. I will think it over and talk about it to you when I see you. As I wrote you, I have accepted the invitation to the luncheon and that day will be given to you and I hope you will be able to go with me to the meeting that night.
I think the correct name of the place is Psychology Forum. I understood from the secretary, Miss Koenig [Miss Ann Koernig], that when they had a large audience, they held the meeting somewhere else. Maybe no one will be there.
Thanking you again and with love from all,
Sincerely, Edgar Cayce
R22. 9/30/44 Letter from Miss [1387] to GD: ”…I thought you were a friend of mine! How come you want me to ‘contact’ [1472]? Don’t you know that all we have to do is get in the same room to have the temperature drop below zero? I have never yet been near her that she has not all but slapped me in the face. Even way back in 1939 at the first congress I attended. I really don’t see what we would have in common except a decided dislike for each other. I don’t think I could help her any - I don’t think she would ever acknowledge that she needed any help…”
R23. 10/27/44 [1472]‘s letter to GD:
Dearest Gladys:
A friend who had dinner with me last night is a close personal friend of Lucille Kahn. This friend (Roxanna Wells) told me that Mrs. Kahn has told her that all appointments for readings have been cancelled indefinitely, and that Edgar is in a serious condition. She said a heart specialist [Henry George III, D.O.] from here had been flown to the Beach, and she gave out the general impression that Edgar is critically ill, - and that the Association is on the rocks. I think such talk very injurious, - both to Mr. Cayce, personally, and to the Association, - and I would have liked the necessary knowledge to contradict it. I did say I thought it greatly exaggerated; that when I left the Beach the Cayces were expected home, and that Edgar was better.
You promised to write me the situation, and I wish you would do so at once, even if only a memo, so that I may know the best and wisest way to dispel these destructive reports.
Say nothing of this to the Cayces, as there is no use worrying them, but JUST WRITE ME WHAT THE SITUATION REALLY IS, and I will handle it from this end as may seem best.
The woman [1387] from … has never got in touch with me. Nor the people you said you wanted me to see. As I have had stupendous demands on my time since my return I have been glad they have not done so, but still want you to know I am always willing to see any one who really needs help, - and YOU feel I may be able to give it.
I have thought of you many, many times since my return. It was so nice to be able to have some long talks with you alone while there. I hope all is well with you, and that Edgar is improving, rather than in the state reported to Miss Wells by Mrs. Kahn.
With much of love from [1472]
R24. 10/30/44 GD’s letter to [1472]:
Monday night,
Dearest [1472]-
Ten days ago I went to Roanoke to see Mr. Cayce, as we had called a meeting of the board of trustees of the Association and he wanted to discuss some things with me. I found him looking much better than I had expected, although he did go through a terrible siege for two weeks - had such trembling spells, jerking and twitching almost like convulsions - the doctors said they had never seen anything like it. When Dr. Semones [Harry Semones, D.O.] was able to find a certain nerve in his back and press on it the jerking would stop immediately. This went on day and night for two weeks - sometimes several times a day, lasting anywhere from five to twenty minutes or longer. Dr. Semones slept in his office at the hotel during that period, so he could get to him in a few minutes if he had a spell in the night. The last reading [294-212] had indicated that when the colon became clear, the cause would be well on the way to being removed. Finally a string of mucous about a foot long was eliminated from the colon - hard like rubber - apparently had been there for years. Anyway, from that day he began to improve. He says he actually feels better than he did when he left Virginia Beach, because he is not in pain, but his left hand and left foot are quite swollen and at times painful, and he is very weak. They are working now to get the circulation equalized
- he has trouble sleeping - just takes five, ten, fifteen minute naps at the time, not ever able to sleep over two hours at a time day or night. BUT he is definitely getting better. It is just going to take time, patience and persistence.
As for the Association, I feel more hopeful for it than I have for a long time. At the board meeting on the 21st an Executive Committee was appointed to take care of any business coming up between now and the next board meeting. This Committee consists of four local members of the Board: Mr. H. E. Poole, President of the Ass’n is chairman; Mr. R. E. Simmons; Mr. Noah Miller; and Miss Florence Edmonds. Also one of our local members of the Ass’n who makes his living as an auditor [Theron Helms] was appointed Chairman of the Finance committee, and I was appointed Treasurer. Mr. Cayce was prepared for this by my trip up there, and he dictated a letter to me to the Board, and signed it, asking them to make me Treasurer. It is true, as Mrs. Kahn says, that we haven’t any money - but it is not the first time, and we have greater possibilities for getting each department to pay for itself than we have ever had. To those people who consider the matter of getting readings personally the only value of the Association, I suppose it does appear that we have “folded up.” But it is now time to prove our big-sounding words and actually DO some research on our files instead of just talking about it.
We just received the material Saturday from Tom [Sugrue] for the November Bulletin and the next issue of This Week’s Readings. These should go out within the next week or ten days. (By the way, I hope you received your Congress Booklet.) Tom is really going to work with a bang on the publications and I believe we’ll have a real source of income there, at the same time doing a lot of good. I’m enclosing some forms which we are now using to answer first inquiries, and we are still getting plenty of them.
It will interest you to know that out of the fifteen trustees of the Association, Dave Kahn was the only one not represented at the meeting on the 21st. He did not return his proxy. Of course, he has never thought much of the Association except as something necessary to allow “Judge” to collect fees for readings. Still, he is a good personal friend and will, without a doubt, stand by to help the family in any way he can, financially or otherwise, if and when they need it. Remember that reading given at the Harrison’s some years ago regarding world affairs, in which it was stated that the time was fast approaching when individuals could no longer stay on the fence but would have to declare themselves one way or the other? Well, some of us are declaring ourselves “for” the Association, because we believe in it as an organization and feel it has a place in the years to come, regardless of Edgar Cayce - he has only paved the way. You are right in saying that such talk about the Association being on the rocks is injurious. I just hope that the Bulletin and This Week’s Readings (though I guess we’ll have to change the name of it) will be able to counteract some of the thoughts along that line.
I surely intended to write you before this, but I have been in the middle of a whirlwind sure enough ever since you left.
Just Mae and I are in the office now, so maybe we can get things done. I’m not working any harder than I did before, but I’m getting a great deal more satisfaction out of what I do, because I believe now it is in the right direction.
Mr. Ricks [Bernard J. Ricks] wrote a very enthusiastic letter about Mrs. [3514] - she gave him a list of past incarnations and advised him a course to follow for his life work, but he is waiting to get his Life Reading to see if the information is the same, before he tells us what she said. I think the real way to test her (though I don’t like to call it that) would be for someone who has already had a Life Reading to get her to give information. How about you writing her sometime, [1472]? She seems to be a very nice person, judging from her letters. Mrs. […], …, Mo.
As soon as I get a chance to answer his letter I am going to refer to you a young man by the name of Paul M. Hancock. (His wife is Evelyn Wyckoff, leading lady in the show OKLAHOMA.) He is planning discussion groups of those interested in the Association, etc. Also he is suggesting that a certain healer, Ralph Houston, might pinch-hit for Mr. Cayce in the New York area. Have you heard of this Ralph Houston? I’ll send you a copy of the letter I write him.
[1472], thanks a million for your letter which just MADE me sit down and write you. I forwarded your other letter on to Mr. Cayce. His address is: % Meadow View Inn, Cloverdale, Va. It is about ten miles from Roanoke. You’d love it - a very historic place - Geo. Washington hid in the loft from the Indians once, when he was surveying Natural Bridge.)
I certainly was shocked to hear of Mr. Harrison’s Milton W. Harrison] accident. It must have happened right after he sent back his proxy for the board meeting. We had a nice note then from him. It does seem like he is being made to rest also, doesn’t it? I hope you are resting sufficiently that a similar shock won’t be necessary for you.
God bless you, [1472]. I think of you often and it gives me courage when I need it. Heaps of love,
Gladys
R25. 12/2/44 GD’s letter to [1472]:
Dearest [1472]-
A copy of Marion Wolfe’s letter is enclosed - my letter to her - so sorry I did not include it with my last note to you.
Thanks so much for your letter. you wouldn’t believe the improvement that has taken place in Mr. Cayce since he arrived home, but you’d still be terribly shocked if you could see him. Beth Graves came in to see him today - she saw him the day he left Va. Beach for Roanoke - and she was shocked beyond words, not having realized how helpless he was. But I know that his greatest chance for recovery is the rebuilding of his nerve energy in the way we have been told through the readings to do it. His treatment is very similar to that given for Tom Sugrue, and I am sure it will be quite long-drawn-out. Perhaps it is best this way, since he will be forced by necessity to turn within rather than putting his mind so much on the material things which caused his illness in the first place. Today he dictated a letter to Hugh Lynn, even though he had to whisper it. You see, he’s lost his voice - probably from sheer weakness, though Miss Annie Cayce thinks it is the same way he lost it years ago when he first learned he could give readings. Perhaps he will learn something even more wonderful from it this time. He’s very impatient for visitors and mail now, so I’m telling everyone to write him and visit him for a few minutes at the time. In the mornings he has time to dictate two or three Thank You notes (and there are plenty of them to do!). In the afternoons for about two hours he can receive visitors - a few minutes for each one, with a little nap between. You see, he hasn’t yet gotten so that he can sleep a whole night through, so he has to take naps often in order to get enough rest. I believe that eventually he will become so relaxed that he will probably do nothing but sleep for two or three days until he “catches up” but that time hasn’t come yet. His circulation is still unequalized. The swelling in his hand has gone down but his left foot is still quite swollen.
I’m so glad you wrote Mr. Ricks as you did. He sent me a three-page closely typed letter and I answered him by postal card. I’ll be anxious to know what you hear from Mrs. [3514].
From a letter from Mrs. Wilfred Sechrest today, 530 Broad St., Englewood, N.J., I understand that a group of people in N.Y. have been meeting every Tuesday night for several months studying the Bible Minutes that were written up from our meetings here. They have finished the Minutes on Genesis and now want others, which I don’t think are worthy of being studied until they are re-written using parallel philosophical information through the readings as interpretation. You might like to “sit in” on one of these meetings and see just what they are doing. It seems to me that I sent Lane Mellinger to see you just before you left N.Y., but maybe not. Do you remember? Anyway, she has been going to this group, and I’m writing her a card asking her to get in touch with you and see that you get to a meeting and tell you all about the past proceedings. I don’t even know where they meet. In conversation with Dave Kahn over the phone recently he also mentioned a group which he and Dr.
Morton Singer (dentist) attended. Then I had a letter from a Miss Margaret Hall saying that she would get help from this N.Y. group to copy the medical card index system for me if I wished it, for use in indexing and extracting from the readings material on specific subjects. So, I am a little confused about what sort of group it is - sounds like there might be two or three different ones going. Anyway, they all seem to be anxious to DO things. With the Sechrest-Hall group are Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Kurtz of Montclair, N.J., who have been very active in the Bailey - Alice Bailey movement, I understand - it seems he had (or has) something to do with their publications, or the raising of money to publish their material. He came down to see Mr. Cayce shortly before Mr. C. went to Roanoke, and he expressed a desire to see that some of our information was widely distributed. Please look into all this, [1472], when you get a chance. Mrs. Harold Baird is also a member of this group, whose husband is a Wall street broker - she is a close friend of Mrs. Sechrest.
Sally does the marketing for this household each morning and she brings little Tommy over here to visit with his Muddie Cayce (Muney, as he calls her, or Money - pronounced like money). This morning Mrs. C. kissed him on his neck and he said, “No, that’s [1472]‘s kissing place.” He gets cuter every day. We ask him what his Daddy’s name is and he says “Hew-wen-Cayce.” Since cutting off his curls he looks very boyish and grown-up.
[1472], I’m so glad about the article for The Reader’s Digest. I’ll be on the lookout for it. Yes, I’m glad, too, that it will be on Dr. […] instead of on Edgar Cayce! That would certainly break the camel’s back!
Bye for now. Heaps of love. Do hope you’re feeling stronger all the time.
As ever, [signed] Gladys
R26. 12/10/44 [1472]‘s letter to EC:
Sunday
Dear Edgar:
Altho I have not written you since you got home I have been in correspondence with Gladys Davis, who has kept me informed of your improvement.
I was happy when I learned you were returning to Virginia Beach, for I had a deep inner conviction that you would recover sooner there than anywhere else, as it means a great deal to our balance to be in familiar and loved surroundings and have those who care a great deal about us around us.
As I cannot believe anything ever happens without ultimate good coming out of it, I feel something will be learned and gained from this present physical disharmony of yours, and that it will operate to your ultimate spiritual development and satisfaction. I sincerely hope I am right in this. In any event, I know it has been a terribly hard experience from a purely human standpoint, and my heart has been filled with love and sympathy for you in it.
I am inclosing “the widow’s mite” by way of a wee bit of financial help in the present situation. It has been a real cross to me that I have not been able to do anything recently for the Association financially. But there was a whole year during which I did not earn a cent before going to Arkansas on the radio contract. While I earned a fine salary during the six months of this work, it had to go in catching up on financial things; taxes, and increased cost of living expenses. And now I am just where I was before going to Arkansas. While I shall try to do some writing by way of earning a living, it is a slow and uncertain profession at best, and I am hoping something more remunerative and permanent in the radio field may again turn up. In the meantime I have at least INSTIGATED some of the financial help you HAVE been getting, and I continue to render the Association all the service I can at this end of the line.
I have been in Correspondence with [3514] of … She sent me the amazing “Reading” you got for her in which she was told a real “Reading” would not be given her until she answered “Yea” or “Nay” as to whether she was ready to follow what it revealed. Mrs. [3514] writes me that SHE MET THIS CHALLENGE, - writing you that she WAS QUITE WILLING TO MAKE ANY SACRIFICE DEMANDED OF HER. She tells me that a period was then set for the full “Life Reading”, but that you were unable to give it when the time came because of illness. She intimated in her letter that it WAS TRIED still later, and that you were unable to contact your Source of Information, or read her Akashic Records. Is this correct, or is my understanding at fault? If it is true, how do you account for it? I can understand the first challenge to her, but when she faced it and AGREED to the conditions made for the “Reading”, I don’t understand why you could not THEN get it. From her letters I judge her to be a very fine person. She has seen a full incarnation of mine, - or so she claims. She says I was Roger Bacon, who lived from 1214 to 1292 in Somerset, England. He was a Franciscan monk; a philosopher; metaphysician and scientist. He was imprisoned for denouncing the hypocrisies of the church. He also attacked other religious and philosophical orders for their low moral and intellectual standards. Roger Bacon is supposed to have been an incarnation of Comte de Saint Germain. Mrs. [3514] seems also to be a very fine astrologer, and USES A PERSON’S ASTROLOGICAL CHART TO CHECK THE ACCURACY OF HER READING OF AN AKASHIC RECORD. It is all most interesting.
As I have had but one incarnation given me by Mrs. [3514], and since that checks with none of your readings, I am not certain yet of the value of her work. I say this because I can see no particular value in knowing who you were and where you lived in some former life UNLESS you are given something of your activities and influences at that time, AND THE URGES AND RELATIONSHIP OF THEM TO THE PRESENT. YOU ALONE, of all the psychics I know who have the ability to read the records, DO THIS. That is why your “Life Readings” are as unique as they are valuable. However, Mrs. [3514] MAY BE ABLE TO DO THIS. In my next letter to her I shall ASK her. Just because she DIDN’T do it in the reading of the one incarnation which came through for me DOES NOT NECESSARILY MEAN THAT SHE CANNOT. So I shall wait until I know more before forming an opinion of the value of her abilities as they relate themselves to other people.
As I first wrote Mrs. [3514] at the suggestion of Gladys Davis, I will be glad if you will show Gladys this letter. It will answer her questions regarding the correspondence until I can make time to write her a separate letter…
Young Ricks told Mrs. [3514] some pretty fantastic yarns about the Association. I was glad she wrote me about it, AS IT ENABLED ME TO DISPEL ANY MISCONCEPTIONS SHE GOT FROM HIS REPORT. One of the things he said is that the readings (yours) have said there are only two people in the world who can do your work and that they are St. Peter and St. Paul. He told Mrs. [3514] that Hugh Lynn has found Peter in England and is bringing him back with him after the war. Ricks said that he (Ricks) is supposed to be St. Paul!!! Supposed BY WHOM? He has not yet had his “Life Reading” so you couldn’t have given him that. Was it given in any other “Reading”, - perhaps some one else’s? I would be interested to know this, so tell Gladys to let me know when she writes again.
Please give my love to Gertrude, Gladys, Sally and dear little Tommy. And keep just heaps for yourself, dear Edgar.
Yours in devoted and abiding friendship
R27. 1/4/45 [1472]‘s letter to GC:
… Street, New York 16, New York.
Dear Gertrude:
When Gladys Davis phoned last night that our beloved Edgar had made his transition to the next room of experience I had a momentary struggle with the personal self, for his going leaves a great gap in my personal life. Within a few minutes I mastered all selfish grief in the realization that the transition is a progressive one for Edgar, affording him that greater opportunity for service for which he always yearned.
I know all too well, dear Gertrude, the void Edgar’s release from his physical body will mean for you. I have had father, mother, six brothers, my only son, two husbands, a sister and most of my closes friends pass to the next dimension of life. When my brilliant young son made the transition we call “death”, I was completely desolated, for I could find neither comfort nor explanation in the orthodox church to which I then belonged. For two years I indulged in a grief which was devastating to me, and which I feel sure retarded by boy’s progress. Fifteen years later, when my favorite brother went through the same experience, I had learned something about this thing called life, and this thing called death, and was so convinced that the transition was just another step forward and upward on his path of spiritual evolution, that I was happy in his release from a body which had been through a long illness and years of suffering. In THIS UNDERSTANDING I felt more like singing than I did like crying at his funeral, and I am positive such a mental attitude helped my brother on his way, while my selfish grief over my personal loss in my son’s “death” helped keep him on a lower vibration than he might have immediately gained had I not held him back with my tears.
I cite this experience to you in the hope that it may help you shed light on Edgar Cayce’s path through joy for him in his release, rather than cast obstructive shadows with personal grief. I know how hard a thing this is to do, and my heart goes out to you in sympathy and compassion in the difficult adjustment you face. But the great courage and strength which have bourne you up during Edgar’s long illness will sustain you now. Whatever the seeming, “underneath are The Everlasting Arms”, and I am perfectly sure Edgar would not have been asked to relinquish this experience had he not finished his work on this plane and been needed for a greater service on the next. It is my personal belief that his knowledge of the progressive planes beyond our third- dimensional world will be of inestimable help to thousands of boys who may find themselves bewildered when suddenly plunged in battle into a new experience for which their own training may have ill prepared them. I believe Edgar Cayce will stand on the bridge between this dimension and the next one to help these dear boys across, and assist them in making their adjustment. Having finished this incarnation he has been called to a bit higher wave-length.
As I understand it, all life is radio-activity. When the gap between the constant life-giving element and variable man- using elements of man’s nature widens to a point where the vibratory rates between them are no longer commensurate, the two principles part company, - the body dropping away into what is call “death”, - the still animate consciousness remaining in its condition of permanence, but functioning on a new wave-length of greater sensitivity. “Death”, then, results when the total mass condition of the physical man is such that the heart can no longer beat at the rate at which life is delivered, but falls beneath the reach of the Cosmic wave-length.
Man is thus, in the last analysis, the causal agent of his own “death”, having slowly made, - or permitted to be made, - through his food; his habits and his thoughts, - a complex of inharmonious conditions no longer tenable by the life-giving principle. Had he pyramided throughout the years a better set of conditions he could be longer animated by the life-force.
Of course we ALL do this through IGNORANCE, - or largely so. By the application of a totally new intelligence to the conduct and control of his life habits, man could greatly extend his life on this plane, - living daily in abundant health and joy, and finally - through a sustained understanding - and practice of true harmony in living - he could attain to the vibratory rate of the life-force (God) itself, and be permanently free from “death”. For THERE IS NOTHING IN THE LIFE PRINCIPLE WHICH MAKES NECESSARY THE DEATH OF THE FORM. In the new cycle ahead of us this - and much else - will become general knowledge, I am sure.
We are living in an age which will swiftly unfold increasing wonders. Think how few years ago it was when we thought talking movies impossible; when we scoffed at the possibility of short-wave broadcasting, and television was not even a dream. The entire universe is a form of electricity, and Thomas Edison said (shortly before he made his transition to another plane of experience) that our greatest discoveries of the future will be in the spiritual realm. As we gain more knowledge of spiritual law it will become easier and easier to function on more than one plane at a time; to make trips to other dimensions, just as Edgar did when he gave “Readings”.
Yes, my dear friend, the time is near when EVERYBODY will realize that what we call “death” is merely a transformation of our radiation, and rejoice, rather than mourn, when those we love graduate to that higher frequency in which there is complete freedom from the limitations of this physical world.
Until you join Edgar it will be a great comfort to you to remember how much his work here widened the gates which open to the type of understanding which knows no loss. My own heart is filled with gratitude for the “Life Reading” he gave me, for it thus widened the tents of my consciousness, and strengthened my conviction that EVERY experience is a step forward in evolution.
Yours in loving and abiding friendship [1472]
R28. 3/22/45 GD’s letter telling about GC’s illness, etc.:
I sure did get my visit to N.Y. in at the right time, didn’t I. Elenor [Elenor S. Cooley] was right when she said everything was “set” for it and that I couldn’t help myself. I got a berth going and coming, the last one on the coach each time, and without making a reservation ahead of time. Not seeing you again before I left I didn’t get to tell you about a dream I had while at Mr. Kurtz [Matthew J. and Margaret G. Kurtz] home. I thought I was in the basement stringing up clothes lines from one corner to the other. When I finished I had made a perfect spider web. That’s exactly what I did while in N.Y.; every contact led to another and it was almost like I was on a string and couldn’t help myself. I finally decided I’d better come home before I started another spider web - it would have been so easy. This is especially interesting, considering the information in a reading years ago. Mr. Cayce had a dream regarding the Study Group members [262-16, Par. 21-A], the interpretation of which (in the reading) gave each one the section of the country in which they could have the greater influence or the group which spoke their language. When my name was called, the answer came, “The vine lands of New York.” I never knew what it meant by the vine lands until I had that dream about the spider web, after I had been chasing all over N.Y. City, Westchester, Long Island and New Jersey visiting people of such different walks of life yet all connected by the thread of the Ass’n work. (With me as the spider!)

R29. 4/9/45 [1472]‘s letter to GD:
Dearest Gladys:
When your friend Jacqueline [Faucheur] phoned me of Gertrude’s passing the morning of Easter sunday my first thought was the joy Edgar must feel in having her join him, and what a lovely thing it was for them both to be together on the Resurrection Morn. With this in mind I wrote the following telegram to you:
“What a glorious Easter for both Edgar and Gertrude. Stop. Please buy flowers for me”.
When I presented this to the telegraph office the woman who received it said:
“We are not allowed to telegraph greetings or felicitations”.
I said: “Both the people mentioned in the telegram are dead, so the message could hardly be called a felicitation.”
She looked shocked, but nevertheless refused the wire, so I had to change it to just the request that you buy flowers for Gertrude for me. I hope you did this, and please let me know what I owe for them and I will send you a check to cover the cost.
I shall write Hugh Lynn in a few days. I do hope he can now return, for your need of him must be great. However, you are so capable yourself, I am sure you will be able to carry on and hold the Association together until he does return. If I can be of any service to you let me know.
I feel grateful that Gertrude could be released from a body that could have given her no pleasure had she been able to hold it as a vestment, and I have no doubt that she was called to resume her work with Edgar. Her self-abnegation was always so great that few realized how important a factor she was in the work. Those of us who knew her so well did know and realize it, however, and blessed her in our hearts for her faithfulness and loyalty and love.
I am wondering if Sally and Tommy will now move into the home place? Do let me know how things are going, and give Sally my very real love.
I shall hold you and your work in the sanctuary of both friendship and prayer, asking God’s guidance for your every step.
Yours devotedly
R30. 4/11/45 GD’s letter to [1472]:
Dear [1472]-
Thanks for your letter just received. The wire came from you and Mr. and Mrs. Harrison regarding flowers, and I was able to attend to it because I talked to Doris House on the phone (to Hopkinsville) and she was glad to handle the flowers for us from there instead of having to go through the florist here. Just yesterday I talked to her mother who has come back from Hopkinsville, having gone with Miss Carrie (Mrs. House, Sr.) to the funeral. I told Doris to use
5 for you and10 for the Harrisons, and I have already sent her a check to cover it along with several others here who had me do the same thing. Mrs. Anderson says that your flowers were beautiful - a big spray of white carnations. (It seems that flowers are much more reasonable there than here.) The Harrisons’ were a beautiful crescent made of mostly pink roses, and enough soft lacy something to make it so pretty, and the very loveliest shade of pink ribbon bow. The service was very impressive, almost like a double ceremony, and such a lot of flowers. One of the palls was put over his grave and one over hers. The same ceremony was used for her that had been previously used for him, and everyone seemed to feel that it was just a continuation - that the ceremony for him actually hadn’t been complete until she was laid beside him.Yes, Hugh Lynn got the cablegram from the doctor warning him, so he was somewhat prepared. We haven’t heard from him yet since he received the cablegram telling of her passing. Sally is getting on fine but needs a great deal of rest. She can’t go up and down steps yet. Ecken wrote to H. L. regarding the house. He asked me to “feel out” the Ass’n Board regarding buying it, as he feels that he and H. L. both will want to build their own home and not live here. They could get a good price for the place now, but of course it means more to the Ass’n than anyone else. Ecken thinks they’d like to have the Ass’n buy it and keep it as a sort of memorial. But nothing is definite. It is up to H. L. and Ecken to decide. I’m sure the Ass’n could raise the money, because the spirit of this place means more than any other they could buy. But time will tell. Many more changes will probably take place during the next few months.
