This Psychic Reading given by Edgar Cayce at his home on Arctic Crescent, Virginia Beach, Va., this 23rd day of March, 1938, in accordance with request made by the daughter - Mrs. [480], Associate Member of the Ass”n for Research & Enlightenment, Inc.
[Edgar Cayce; Gertrude Cayce, Conductor; Gladys Davis, Steno.]
395 Hudson Bldg., Time of Reading Harper Hospital, 4:00 to 4:15 P. M. Eastern Standard Time. Detroit, Mich. (Physical Suggestion)
-
EC: Yes.
-
As we find, conditions are not so satisfactory. Yet as we find, if there is the response to the applications being made - these, as indicated, offer the greater opportunity for allaying, staying the conditions from progressing in the system.
-
As has been indicated, in times back, the applications then made were not only allaying but were ACTIVATIVE towards curative forces. But with the sudden change by exertion that made for the BREAKING of some cellular force, this allowed the spreading of the infectious forces to greater areas; and thus has caused the greater disturbance in the present.
-
Then, as we find, as to how long, as to how staying - this will depend upon the quiet of the body and the ability of the activities without too much burning to cause infectious forces or areas to prevent their bleeding too much.
-
However, there will be periods when there will be a flow - and if this is kept, and there is kept in the system conditions that will allow for the better coagulation, such periods of course ease and prolong the experience.
-
These then are the conditions. These as we find in the present are the better manners for caring for same.
-
Precautions - DO NOT BURN TISSUE TOO MUCH!
-
Ready for questions.
-
(Q) Has it extended to the bowel and urinary tract? (A) Not as YET, though the pressure upon same - or there are areas where the retention of urine through the bladder causes great pain - but this is sympathetic and not the extending as yet into the functioning area of the bladder or the urinary canal.
As we find, almost the whole area of the uterus is infected but it has been stayed.
If there is the ability, then, for the stoppage of flows that occur at times, or hemorrhage, you see - and to keep these so applied or so stayed that these do not spread over other areas - the condition may be checked.
-
(Q) Was it some exertion of the body itself that brought the turn for the worse? (A) Of the body, as indicated; a strain.
-
(Q) Will the X-Ray be successful? (A) This cannot be told. As indicated, it offers the greater opportunity of raising such high voltage as to destroy the live or active bacilli. What is to be feared most is when hemorrhages occur, or breaking where areas are NOT entirely stopped, by the EFFECT of the X-Ray - or that there is such a QUANTITY of the X-Ray as to produce scar tissue and THIS cause hemorrhage, see?
Then as to how long - it depends upon how efficient are the applications of the X-Ray; not only in treating the areas but in NOT the usage so long as to burn or destroy tissue and thus cause the active forces of the body to break by the very staying in tissue that would produce inactivity of the muscular forces - or the activity of the system through the areas of the organs that necessarily function in the pelvic area.
-
(Q) They are giving her half an hour of X-Ray about every other day. (A) These, as has been given, must be judged by those making the application WATCHING the condition and acting with the best interests of the entity in respect to same. There is this fear; though with this PARTICULAR activity, these are very good - at TIMES, with the variation in current, some of the rays become more penetrating than others. This then again depends upon the operator of the X-Ray treatments.
-
(Q) Why doesn’t Dr. McAlpine operate? (A) As indicated, this has extended to such a wide area that it is infectious in itself, and thus with the operation would be futile until it may be localized more.
-
(Q) Any other suggestions that may be given that will help? (A) These as we have indicated are the better as we find in the present.
-
We are through for the present.

Reports
Reports & Follow-up
R1. GD’s note: See 12/27/50 Dr. John R. Thompson’s report under 480-30 Reports, indicating that some 80% of the cases he treated with EC rdgs. were cured. “Cancer was the only consistent failure.”
R2. 3/28/38 EC’s letter to [480]: “My heart is so heavy when I think of you and your Mother can hardly stand it. You know our heart and mind is with you all at all times, and you may be very sure we are praying with and for you all - hate to think of your Mother suffering so. That is what hurts as well as the sadness and anxiety to you and Mr. [619]. My, know he is all broken up; may the Lord give each of you strength to carry on just as she would have you do.
“Appreciate your letting us hear from you [480], know you haven’t the time nor the inclination, but you know how very anxious we are about your Mother for we all love her just as if she was our very own.
“She has been so lovely, so good, so kind to each of us, doesn’t seem possible that this should have to come to her.
“Give her our love please.
“With love to you and [633]…” Sincerely, Edgar Cayce
R3. 3/28/38 Daughter [480]‘s letter: “The rdg. came yesterday - it emphasized even more how completely our hands are tied. It seems so impossible - here Mother was having the rdgs. all along - the condition did seem somewhat easier to me. Yet there is a tumor there which might have been able to have been removed 3 yrs. ago. The cancerous growth did not start 2 wks. ago or 2 mos. - that has been going on for some time. It’s so hard to try to rationalize or understand that my mind goes into a whirl.
“I don’t believe I have to write you about the stand Daddy [see 619-5 Reports] has taken against the rdgs. - his whole life is wrapped up in Mother and he feels she neglected herself because of her intense interest and faith in what came through the rdgs. He absolutely forbids my having anything to do with it - but we are two individuals - Mother is part of me - and I am trying to understand, not condemn blindly. Please do not send any mail to [619]‘s - send it all to me at … I know this hurts and no one will ever know how badly I feel. I understand why Daddy takes this stand - he is heartbroken and never did understand the rdgs. and I know you have never done any harm, only good.
“I believe I am pregnant again - can I have a ck. rdg.?… Please help me to find some answer.”
R4. 3/31/38 EC’s letter to [480]:
Dear [480]:
“Thank you for yours of 28th, of course am hurt, but do not blame any one, feel the hurt I did when my own Mother was so ill, and when my Father who had lived by the rdgs. for years, can’t blame any one from questioning, for have always done so myself. Can never forget the morning when our own baby, the rdg. disagreed with the Dr., the Dr. had his way, the baby died, who was right - how do I know? Am sorry your Father feels as he does, but do not blame him one bit, have tried my best as I see it, may be all wrong in all of it, but it is not the experience of many day after day. I do not doubt God’s mercy or justice, but know it is not as we may see it, but realize we are very very short sighted, and LIFE is one and we see just a few days at a time at most.
“Of course, [480], a body is ever trying to defend them- selves, that is a body, that may be different like my self, yet, feel I try to be rational and sane about it, but the experiences can’t all be wrong. Good has been too consistent through the years. Thank you for everything and know am praying with and for each of you.
“Making the appt. for you if you wish it for the afternoon of the 7th 3.30 to 4.30 you can let me know with any questions that you may wish. [See 480-46.]
“You know all here are heart broken at the condition of your Mother. Please give her our love.
“All send love to you and yours…” Sincerely, Edgar Cayce
R5. 4/5/38 Mrs. [480]‘s ltr. submitting questions for 480-46:
“Mother is being kept under dope most of the time and does not say very much. I don’t see any improvement in her at all
- they have dulled her so - her mind wanders. There has to be someone with her all the time. Mrs. [1100] and I had a long talk which still leaves me up in the clouds. I guess I will have to find my own way, as each of us must.”
R6. 4/20/38, Wed. night, Mrs. [601] died - cancer of womb.
R7. 5/1/38 [257]‘s ltr. to EC: ”…I had a long talk with [619] today he still is your friend, but he only states that they should use a doctor while following the rdgs. On this you and I are not against it - he will feel better before I leave here - his mind was terribly upset that the rdgs. didn’t warn him. I explained that she probably knew more than they did and didn’t tell them - anyway, I’ll tell you the whole story. He is still your friend and appreciates your genuineness, your honesty and desire to help your fellow man - he knew his wife until the last moment held you in the highest esteem - it will be very interesting but will hold until I see you…”
R8. 5/2/38 Daughter [480]‘s phone call: [See notation under 480-46 Reports] “She knew. I think she knew as soon as she went to the hospital. She definitely gave up - couldn’t get her to eat - just wouldn’t try… We have moved to Daddy’s [See 619-5 Reports]. Please try to understand and not condemn him. He is absolutely LOST.” [She was phoning from a pay station so the call wouldn’t appear on telephone bill.]
R9. 5/3/38 EC’s ltr. to [257]: ”…Thank you for speaking with Mr. [619]. Wish I could see and talk with him. Don’t blame him one bit and quite agree with him there should be a doctor on hand at all times. You know I think a great deal of Mr. [619] and thought as much of his wife as if she had been of my own family. If he could but know my experience when your mother passed on [Mrs. [325]] - and most of all my own, he would possibly understand. Oh, yes, it is hard to understand, but certainly if we have the right attitude, and are doing good here and there every day ‘most, we are not to be blamed or hated. Don’t know as have ever had anything to hurt quite so much as for him to say such hard things about me - but I know he has said some of the nicest ever said, and is but right that he could or would say those that hurt me personally most. But I know I must not let them, for it must be, as it is, whether I would have it so or not, an impersonal thing. For God knows I do not know what is to be said or why [in the rdgs.], or when. You know all that - you have had too much experience.”
R10. 5/4/38 See 480-47, Par. 17-A seeking understanding of apparent tragedy of death of her mother, [601].
R11. 5/5/38 Mr. [619]‘s letter: “Our mutual friend, Mr. [257], has this morning turned over to me a letter which you wrote him on May 3rd and I carefully noted the contents therein.
“The passing of my wife means a great loss to everyone that ever knew her or of her, and amongst our very dear friends, you and your family, are outstanding in our hearts. You will at no time ever hear, or ever did hear, any ill spoken against anybody, particularly the Cayces’. My slogan in every day walk of life and every problem has always been ‘Do not be a slave for any kind of work or belief. Get the best you can out of everything and leave the balance alone.’
“I believe your work has been very beneficial to myself and many friends that know you. It has created a great deal of better thought, softer feeling and a greater contentment in life with my family and myself.
“I would appreciate greatly a word from you with regard to any statement made by my family or myself that has given you one minute of sorrow or grief. If any such information came to you same is not correct. You have our best wishes from the bottom of our hearts, and we all know that the dear one that has passed away has been outstanding with all humanity that knew her.”
R12. 5/6/38 [257]‘s ltr. to EC: ”…I am very glad you wrote me as you did about [619]! He did not say unkind things - he was not bitter - he did not refuse mail or return letters unopened - it must have been Mrs. [607] [[601]‘s sister] who had charge of the house when [619] was at the hospital. You received his letter no doubt and it was written from here Chicago?]. It was worth the trip here for me to talk to him. …Write [619] one of your old time friendly letters and it will do him good - he is your sincere loyal devoted friend - his only statement was, they should have consulted a doctor more along with the rdgs. - you and I agree on that…”
R13. 5/7/38 See daughter [480]‘s letter under 480-47 Reports indicating, “There is such an emptiness in [619]‘s life and in mine… She knew the day she went to the hospital (March 17th) that she didn’t have long. She told me so. She suffered intensely that previous week. On the 11th a rdg. was taken (601-28) which said there was no malignancy, yet Dr. I. L. O’Connor after his examination on the 10th knew there was. The biopsy proved it, in the hospital. I have read all her rdgs. and fail to find any warnings except during the time she was taking care of Mrs. [1375] [See 601-20]…”
R14. 5/9/38 EC wrote Mr. [619] a ltr. of appreciation for above ltr.
R15. 5/10/38 EC’s ltr. to Mrs. [480] see under 480-47 Reports.
R16. 5/16/38 Mrs. […]‘s ltr. reporting on son’s rdg. 1527-3, then: “Now - I must tell you something else, for your COMFORT - too. I think HE - wants me to.
“[480] called me last week, Tuesday. I DID NOT KNOW that Mrs. [601] had passed on, until then. At first - when she went into the hospital I called each day. But the maid, then an Aunt of [480]‘s answered the phone and seemed not to want to talk. So, I thought I would wait a few weeks before calling again. Well - I was SORRY, indeed - to hear. I told [480] to be sure and try to keep faith, for I knew her mother would want that, and she said she would. [480] said she was anxious about [1527] and wondered. And also said she wanted to see us, after she has been away, for about the next ten days - I believe. I told her about the error I fell into regarding doctors, etc. And - she said - how fine - Dr. T. John R. Thompson, D.O.] had been, and was. That was last Tuesday. Well, we always go out Tuesdays - as Mr. B. has a day off each week - and we decided to go fishing - and as we were on our way out - we met - Mr. [619] himself.
“Mr. B. has known him for years, but I never knew that - until I mentioned Mrs. [601] through your sending me, her name. (Isn’t this all - co-incidence.) Well - [Mr. B.] introduced me, and we talked a half hr. - I guess - about everything.
“He feels just awful. Cried and cried - about all - and so on. I guess - I did too. For although I only met Mrs. [601] the once - I talked over the phone - every few days - it seemed - after I met her.
“Well - it seems - that her sister [Mrs. [607]] intercepted your letters and sent them back - WITHOUT him, or [480] finding out until too late. And - he told my husband and myself - that he absolutely thinks as much of you as ever - and that is a whole world, of good. He said they were afraid
- I too, had been snubbed over the phone when asking for Mrs. [601] in the same way. Well - he says, that he still knows - all good was done for her.
“I felt - I could, and would write this to you - confidentially between you and I, of course - because - of how kindly he spoke.
“Then, he told [Mr. B.] and I, of several wonderful cases that he knows and has met through your work. How - in fact, one man said never to call you ‘MR’ to him, for you would always stand, for their family, for ‘GOD’ Cayce. He said - you surely - were - doing - God’s work. Oh, he spoke splendidly.
“So - no matter what the relatives said - or did - I know, that [480] and her father know that the best for Mrs. [601] took place. Far better that way than prolonged suffering - as I told [480], myself.
“Then, today, Dr. Thompson was talking about how quickly it happened for a cancer case - actually, and he thought it was fine it should be that way - rather than awful pain - etc. So - in thinking it all through - I can see how - the FATHER
- did the best. So - all is now, well.
“The doctor - was telling me - how Mrs. [601] KNEW - he fancied, and trusted - what came through you - before ANY - doctor. So, he said, he felt - it was all - really as well as could be - better so, in fact.
“Don’t think - I would discuss something that is not my concern, will you? Please! Just, feel that - I would - bring a little of the FATHER’s Love, and - HIS understanding Heart - to you - about it all. HE - knows. Maybe that was why - HE led me - to this - so that later on - I would be able - to give you HIS - Hand. Who knows?
“In another day or so - I will send - a little enclosure - Meantime I DO - bless you.
“In Him - over and over.”
R17. 6/18/38 Daughter [480]‘s ltr.: “I have been wanting to write to you for a long time. Somehow I just can’t seem to collect myself but am living in a suspended world of thoughts and trying to keep myself busy. The Bulletin came and very timely it was [6/38 A.R.E. Bulletin about the Congress, enclosing Psychic News (Clip) Letter by Dr. Henry S. W. Hardwicke in re DEATH, dedicated to his daughter who suddenly died on 5/1/38]. I have thought all those things about death and have come to the same conclusions. This period of remaining here on earth is only transitory before going back and returning to all the meaningful things of the eternal life.
“[633] and Daddy [619] are well. Daddy is having a difficult time with his adjustment, he is very restless and keeps on trying to run away from himself. I am patient with him and try not to notice it.
“Mother [601] and I had planned on being with you at the Congress. We both will be, I’m sure, in spirit. Please don’t feel because you don’t hear from us as often that we don’t think of you all. If I were not pregnant I would be in Va. Beach with you.” [She submitted questions for her own Ck. Physical 480-48.]
R18. 6/21/38 GD’s letter to Mrs. [601]‘s daughter, Mrs. [480]:
[480], darling:
“My heart has gone out to you so! The only reason I haven’t written is that I can’t possibly find words to say what and how I feel. I’ve felt such a longing to be with you and to comfort you, yet such an inadequacy. I realize now that no one can do that; it must come from within, where the spirit bears witness. The whole situation was such a shock to us; it doesn’t even yet seem possible. We were so thrown out of balance - it was almost as if Mr. Cayce himself had been taken to other fields of endeavor, right in the midst of all the things we’d planned. I mean if that had happened, it would be just as easy to understand. There is no possible way from the material reasoning for us to figure out WHY such a thing happened, why such a thing was ALLOWED to happen - from the spiritual angle. There is so little we know, after all, concerning the laws of this universe of ours. And as the Readings so often say, I suppose the only way we can find out is through EXPERIENCING all the trials and tribulations of the earth having the patience as Job to hold on to our faith In God, knowing that the reason is surely for our own purging that we may be more able to appreciate His ways and cooperate with them.
“Truly I know, as you do, that your mother is still with us - in the REAL way that counts. I FEEL her presence in every good thing I do or say. What she has meant, and does mean to us, can never be measured. I know that she will be with you always, for - as you said - she is a PART of you; and she is close to you as God is close, in a way that cannot be explained. The separation to her has not been a separation, because in spirit we are all one - especially when we are one in purpose and desire; and I know of no two people who were more so than you and your mother. It is the lack of the PHYSICAL contact that makes it hard for us, whereas SHE can experience a closeness with us that she couldn’t while in the body. I’m sure she is happier and can accomplish much more, if only she can have the realization from her loved ones that she IS with them constantly, in every single thought and deed. I love to think of her in close companionship with the soul which is waiting to come to you this time; and I know that is going to take away some of that LONELY feeling, when you can feel in your arms your own flesh and blood - and hers.
“I certainly wish you could be with us at the Congress. The other night I dreamed that you and Mr. [619] and your SON [Son [1788] was born 12/8/38] (who seemed to be a big boy) came to see us. Also I have dreamed of your mother, and talked with her - it was so REAL! And Mr. Cayce had a very lovely dream about her. As you gradually overcome the terrible HURT, I’m sure you will have constant assurance of her presence and help.
“It seems to me that the people who are the closest to this Work, and who have the desire to understand and do more, are the ones who suffer the most. I suppose that, too, has a meaning. Poor Tom Sugrue is practically helpless; can’t move out of bed without assistance. You see, he had an infection which they had to burn with electricity; and, according to the last Reading, the nerves have been burned so that they have to be rebuilded - and can only be done through the Wet Cell Appliance carrying Gold and Silver. He has started on that treatment, and hopes to get [be?] able to come to the Beach by August and spend the rest of the time here until he is able to resume his activities. During that time he intends to finish the book of Mr. Cayce’s life, and help Hugh Lynn with other writings. As Hugh Lynn says, such things as that we cannot explain except with the idea of reincarnation and so-called ‘karma.’ There must be in each case a way out, though; as in the life of Job - or a way of correction, rather - through gaining the lessons intended from each experience.
“Also one of the leaders in our Prayer Group in Norfolk [Edith Edmonds] has gone through a siege with a breast condition - has had to have X-Ray treatments. We are hoping she will ‘come out of it,’ but of course we never know just how a thing like that will turn out. She has suffered agonies - her whole side has been just RAW!…
“We heard from Mr. [470] and Mrs. [1100] that they are coming to the Congress, and will stay at Hotel Warner. They will probably get here Friday. Wish you were with them.
“Please forgive me, dear [480], for not writing all this time. I want you to know that I love you so, and would do anything in the world I could to help you at any time. You mean SO MUCH to all of us; just as if we were of the same family - for you seem even closer than some in the family. So if we have SEEMED to desert you through your great trouble, please know that it is only because we have been so hurt too.
“Do you have a picture of your mother, [480], that we might have? Although I know we are close in spirit, it would be such a comfort to have a picture of her dear face as we remember her. What a wonderful thing it must be to live such a life that it continues to have a CONSTRUCTIVE influence in the lives of so many, even after your passing to another plane. I’m sure your life is going to be great in its influence for good, and to a great extent because you’ve had HER for a mother.
“Bye-bye now, darling [480]. I’ll try to write more often, now that I’ve made the start. Please give my love to your father and [633]. And with a heart overflowing with love for you and ‘our’ little Jim [1788], I am always,” Your friend, Gladys
R19. 7/11/38 EC’s ltr. to Mrs. [480], [601]‘s daughter:
“Wish you might have been with us for the Congress - good meeting, and believe everyone was helped in one way or another. [480], don’t think I’m trying to work on your emotions and if there had not been others who experienced it also, don’t think I would have mentioned it - but at the dinner meeting your mother was there for a few moments, and the Sunday morning after the meeting - the 3rd - she was very definitely in my Sunday School class. No, I did not speak to her nor she to me - felt you would possibly like to know.”
R20. 7/12/38 Daughter [480]‘s ltr. to GD: “Your sweet letter was so appreciated. I would give almost anything to be with you all for about a week and kind of get myself straightened out. I can’t turn to [633] or my father [619] because they try to avoid the subject, thinking that they by speaking of Mother hurt me more. I haven’t dreamed of Mother once - I guess because I am still living over and over that last month when she looked so badly and suffered so. Write me about your dream and Mr. Cayce’s. It hurt me so to hear about Tom Sugrue - he wasn’t well when we were in N.Y. in Nov…
“Let me know what goes on at the Beach. It was one of the interests Mother and I had together. She was a beautiful character and so patient and thoughtful - I certainly have an ideal to strive for.
“Is all the good you people do compensation for all the terrible hurts you receive and, I might add, things that are thought and never relayed to you? Oh, I know, even I have been, in a small way, crucified by some I thought most dear to me.”

R22. 4/24/68 Ledger-Star Article: X RAYS LINKED TO CANCER
WASHINGTON (AP) - Two government scientists reported today that X-radiation may be a contributing factor in causing some cancers.
In a research paper, Drs. Norman C. Telles and Billy C. Ward of the Public Health Service’s National Center for Radiological Health said their findings were based on a two-year study with rats.
They reported finding that rats exposed to Xrays - and which were given ethionine, a substance known to cause liver cancer
- developed increased numbers of mammary tumors and some died.
